First time visiting after going to the hospital near by, both had the fish and chips, huge portions of fish nicely cooked and very good value. Staff friendly and interior of pub very nicely done. Definitely worth a visit

Visited in June as we have just moved to the area. Friendly staff and wonderfull food. I had a haloomi and sweet chili sauce cibatta, hubby had ham egg and chips. Both were nicely presented with portion size just right. everything we needed was brought to the table before the meal which arrived very quickly. Can't recommend them highly enough and will be making this our new local.

The Thorn Tree is in the tiny village of Waingroves, just across the field from Codnor and easily the best pub for quite a few miles around. It's small but maximises its space incredibly well, with one larger room and a smaller room close by. There is also a decent sized beer garden (considering the overall size of the pub) that is lovely to sit out in in summer. There is a good selection of beers and ales on at all times here, as well as all your usual gins and all that nonsense. The Thorn Tree is one of those pubs that really is at the heart of its village. That isn't because it is the only pub in the village, but because you genuinely get the impression that, were the pub to go, then a huge part of Waingrove's essence would go with it. The landlady is a lovely woman, and there is a really nice community feel in here. Everyone is really friendly. I have never eaten here (save for some crisps!) so I cannot comment on the food, but I can assure you that, should you be passing through Waingroves, you would be a fool not to pop in here. One thing to bear in mind, though - this pub, quite rightly, only takes cash. The nearest cash machines are in Codnor or Ripley...

Arrived as 2 families 10 total and 3 dogs. Sat in beer garden and wanted to order food. Was told by manageress that as they were short staffed they were only serving food to the decking area. This was not big enough to seat all of us together and it wasn't good for dogs either. The refusal to serve us at a table on the grass was farcical and so we walked out- how can businesses turn good business away!!

Overall a very nice experience. Service was good and well paced. Had a lovely piece of fish with a very nice salad, although it was a little wet. I wanted a different dish but the sauce contained mushrooms (which I didn’t want) but was told they couldn’t change the sauce. This slightly concerned me as it should have been possible. The real question is would I return? Yes for the salad or fish and chips which looked good.

Visited at lunch time - told immediately by staff that they had, had a total refurbishment, place did look nice - but told a lot of information rattled off in a matter of seconds about our surroundings.Drinks were slow arriving = food arrived at a reasonable point.Fish lovely and crispy, chips o.k., mushy peas arrived in a strange glass jam pot and could not get to eat them all, tiny portion of tartare sauce which did taste nice, but not enough. No bread and butter offered which was disappointing.Normally frequent Ripley's and could have got the same meal much cheaper.

I've just noticed that this restaurant added £13.75 for VAT to our bill which bore no relation to the figure for the food total on the main part of the bill. Is this just a sneaky way to get extra money as I don't remember the menu here,or anywhere else for that matter adding vat to a restaurant bill. The food was average at best and as others have noted you can stand like a numpty waiting on somebody asking if they can help. Never again.

We have been to The Thorn tree many times and this one didn't disappoint however it was slightly scathed by our initial reception when we arrived. It was extremely busy and the waitress who's name I believe was Belinda didn't even acknowledge us while she was looking at a table plan. Another waitress call Beth asked if she could help me after a few minutes and I explained we had booked a table and gave her my details. Beth then tried to look at the table plan and Belinda very rudely snatched it off her saying I'm trying to sort it out. After another few minutes Belinda asked us to follow her to our table. I found her to be very abrupt and rude not to at even acknowledge someone who is obviously stood waiting for your attention. Maybe she needs to take a look at Beth's customer service skills. All she had to say was please excuse me I will be with you in a minute. Beth then served us for the rest of the meal. She was very attentive and a credit to the restaurant.

I love going to George's and The Thorn Tree is our favourite, their Haddock and Cod and chips are wonderful and always so fresh........I'm sorry to say I only gave them a four after I discovered that they use Palm Oil instead of Rapeseed or any other oil......I've traveled to countries like Malaysia and seen the destruction of their natural rain forests where palm oil plants have been laid instead.....they are not only ruining the trees, the natural habitat to many animals, birds and reptiles but are also altering the ecosystem for the world we live in......I feel that if small company's like George's used the oil that can be grown without destruction then maybe others would follow.....

It was empty when we arrived and not much better when we left. This used to be a vibrant eating place with a feel-good factor. Where has it gone?Sat quickly and asked what drinks we would like..no draught ales available today. Tea was fine.Cod, chips and peas were ordered. Bread and butter is now a separately priced side order, 50p a slice. We read a notice on the table explaining that to pay staff and suppliers a fair price, items had increased. Guess that explained the bread costs. When the fish arrived there wasn't precisely anything to complain about, it just wasn't what a portion used to be.I've had thicker plaice. The cook must have known how thin it was when it was battered, so no use pointing it out.We talked things over with the staff when we had honestly answered the usual question 'Everything alright? 'They were understanding and not surprised. We left a little sadly.

My wife was away, so I took my (adult) daughter to this restaurant as I had driven past it many times & had their excellent fish & chips from the take-away in Ilkeston. I gather George’s is a Derby/Nottingham chain: having 10 premises locally including 2 full restaurants, the other being in Nottingham City Centre. The Thorn Tree doesn't look that much from the road, but as soon as you turn into the car park you are greeted with lovely valley views. The same views can be seen from one side of the restaurant. Sadly the place was full on Sunday lunchtime (most having booked) & our table was on the other side.We were greeted warmly by the manager, who was extremely friendly & helpful, taking our orders, supplying drinks (£1.95) & bread. Our cod, chips & peas (£7.95) were served after 5-10 minutes – again by the manager. We were very impressed by the standard of the food. The battered fish was clearly fresh & the batter very light in texture. The chips were also fine with none of the greasiness which often comes in ‘Chip Shops’. My daughter loved the décor. I wasn’t quite to my taste – but it was fine. Why only 4 stars then? 1. There were four side plates awaiting the bread when we arrived. None of them was very clean, I’m afraid. 2. There were several other (female) members of staff around who didn’t seem to be doing very much: the manager appeared to be doing everything. He was clearly very busy, but still charming to everyone. All in all though – a very pleasant meal in good surroundings.

As soon as we were seated the waitress asked if we would like to order drinks and shared the menu. After about 5 minutes our order was taken. We all had Fish and Chips. The fish was beautifully cooked in a light crisp batter. Served with a choice of garden or mushy peas. We had a dessert. The Lemon tart was one of te best I have tasted, creamy with a fresh sharp lemony flavour. Two of our party ordered Apple Pie which was also good but they would have preferred it served warm. We will certainly go back to this restaurant.
