Lovely Scottish Meal. Small, but welcoming you will need to book a table if you want to eat. The food is all home cooked with traditional pub meals offering simple Scottish meals with a twist such as chicken served on a bed of crispy oatmeal and the classic Italian lasagna only with Gorgonzola and spinach which I had that was lovely, Service was professional and the price is fair and the place is clean. I would definitely return.

This was our first visit here and we were made to feel very welcome. We sat in the beer garden for a drink as we arrived very early for our booking, but it wasn't a problem. They had an extensive menu and also a specials board. Spoilt for choice. The food and service was excellent, couldn't fault it and we will definitely be recommending and returning ourselves soon. Just wish this was our local. Also very dog friendly.

Was recommended to come here by the Perthshire dog page on Facebook and so glad we visited! First time we had 3 courses and needed rolled out the door. The portion sizes are very generous- even the smaller size and the food is of great quality. The staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. Mum and I visited with our two dogs and couldn’t have been made to feel more welcome. We returned the next day for lunch and again the same great service and food. If you’re in the area it’s definitely worth a visit but call to book as it’s very popular.

Just out of lockdown and in the company of a party of some my wife's Yorkshire relations, we were nine in total and felt that the Tavern in the lovely village of Ardler would suit everyone's taste in country fare and hospitality ... and our plans bore fruit. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by the hosts and their staff who bent over backwards to satisfy the nine different combinations our palates required. There is an extensive menu and, clearly, both cheffing and service staff there with full capability for handling this and the other diners they had attracted to their enterprise. Everybody's a winner in such splendid company ... and thanks were due to the silly incumbent Chancellor, who, once more, footed half the bill ... we toasted him anyway.

The risotto I had to start needed seasoning as it came to the table quite bland and the asparagus was almost too tough to cut but the blue cheese croquettes had a lovely flavour and overall the dish was tasty. I ordered the lemon sole for my main and without explanation a plate with cod on it arrived on it! A little overcooked but fairly flavoursome, however I don’t appreciate when a restaurant changes its dishes and either can’t be bothered telling you or just hope you won’t notice!!! (And all that had the fish did notice!) Poor show! I also watched the other fish dishes come out topped in plenty of lovely king prawns but I got my plate last and by then there were obviously two small scrawny “king” prawns left so I was rather miffed. I’m also not sure seasonal trimmings go with fish, other veg would have complimented it better and the veg we did get was not great either (mushy sprouts and pale, greasy, undercooked roast potatoes). Not a meal that makes me want to go back.

We visited the Tavern 12/10/2019 for the first time. The staff were friendly and we were made feel very welcome. The menu had a good selection to choose from and there were several specials on too. You have the choice of high tea or Main menu. For those who struggle to choose a dessert there is an option to have a trio of small desserts for the price of one dessert which is an excellent idea. There was also an option to have a small dessert and hot drink combo. I would highly recommend The Tavern.

I had read the reviews of here and on our last night in the area was really looking forward to dinner, and it didn't disappoint. The place is in the middle of nowhere really and inside was really cosy. We hadn't booked but were lucky enough to get a table, even on a Thursday night the place was packed.I had the arbroath smokie pot and it was absolutely delicious and the lasagne as my main. Portion sizes were huge so I would suggest you probably don't need a starter and a main unless you have a huge appetite. Wine choices were good and to be honest I can't wait t ogo back.Only thing I would say is we were seated quite near the kitchen and heard the waiter moaning about the fact my partner only mentioned his allergy after his order. We found it pretty funny but maybe next investment could be a door for the kitchen!

Spending a few days locally, relaxing in a holiday cottage we decided last minute to go out for dinner and managed to get the last table in this great wee pub. Loads to choose from on menu, really struggled to decide but eventually plumped for Homemade Steak Pie which was delicious, loads of melt in the mouth steak, served with seasonal veg, and choice of mash, boiled potato or chips, and can I just mention the spiced red cabbage, OMG I could just have eaten a plate of that on its own so moorish!! Husband had Beef Olives which he said were very tasty, daughter had Burger, again very tasty and homemade. Husband was the only one to have space left for pudding and had the Clootie Dumpling & Custard, which he demolished in no time. There was so much choice and I’m sure we’ll definitely be back next time we’re in area. We might save ourselves for the ‘High Tea’ as we saw the cake stands coming out for the people next to us and were drooling over all the homemade goodies. Service was friendly and efficient, nice atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in area

We had not been in Ardler for years. After hearing good things about the food we thought we would try it for ourselves . We booked ahead ( my Mum had been recently for lunch ) as she thought it was a bit small. We were given a friendly welcome and nothing was too much trouble . The food arrived after an acceptable amount of time and was very tasty. There was a vast and varied selection of cakes accompanied by scones. The only down side would be the aesthetics of the carpet ( old, stained and dirty) and the toilets need revamped. That being said it didn’t put us off. We will return.

Came in as a family early evening to a lovely roaring fire, not too busy so we were surprised by the amount of things that went wrong.... Only 2 of the 3 drinks ordered arrived and one dish ordered with garlic bread appeared with chips and then took the kitchen a long time to rectify, these were just little niggles however and paled in comparison to one of our parties order who was on a strict diet on medical grounds. The young waitress took down all ingredients to be included in a simple salad and was explicitly advised these could not be added too (it was a simple salad and we did not expect this to be an issue) however when the plate arrived there was several things completely incompatible with said diet on it, upon returning a few minutes later with a salad that looked lovely and complied with the afore agreed ingredients, the waitress told us "this is all they can do for you" thanks, that's what I asked for............ so 2 out of 4 dishes wrong, 1 out of 3 drinks forgotten about and a helping of bad service to boot.

My wife and I have been a few times now, on our own, with my son and with my in-laws. The food is home cooked, very tasty and fresh. The portions are very generous and fantastic value for money. Myself or my guests always leave with full bellys and the sense we've had a great night out. I must stress, it is not fancy 4 star cooking, no smears, dollops and micro herbs here. It is good pub food as we used to think of before everyone wanted to go "gastro". There is steak night Tuesday and fish Friday. You can order high tea, but it must be phone ordered in advance. The menu is extensive and there are always extra starters, mains and desserts on the specials board. There is a lovely village atmosphere here and the young bloke who works behind the bar and also serves the food, is always polite, friendly and attentive. I would say it's best to book in the evenings and you'll turn up and it'll be quiet and you'll wonder why you bothered booking, but it is amazing how quickly the Tavern fills up and then you'll be glad you did. For a pleasant night out where you want to relax, eat and drink in good company and friendly surroundings, I would recommend this gem wholeheartedly.

I drove my wife and three other ladies to the possible-to-miss village of Ardler just off the A94 between Meigle and Coupar Angus ... and there, of course, we found "The Only Pub in the Village" ... Mein Host Jimmy Duncan's renowned and highly thought-of "Ardler Tavern." Well, the ladies, numbering around twenty highly-strung or, at the very least, excited, members of their own species, were adequately served, first, in a marquee tent imported for the occasion, and secondly, in the chutzpah of this famous and very busy bar itself. A great time was reported by all and the evening's festivities, which included burger 'n chips, plenty prosecco, gallous games and a barrel of laughs, went off spiffingly. For a great party, or just your simple evening out with nice food in a wonderful country setting, this is the place in Perthshire.

It's sometimes hard to get a table, best to plan well in advance. Owner/Host is 'Old School Landlord', attentive, friendly and helpful. Comfortable surroundings, pleasant staff, ideal for family celebrations, birthday party for 30 in progress when we visited. Simple and tasty menu, always something for everyone, Daily Specials, Roast Beef Dinner and Steak Pie recommended. Not the last word in sophistication, no ridiculous mini portions, no exotic names for simple food, that costs extra elsewhere and won't taste any better. Sunday "High Tea" big treat and great value!

Staying locally we were looking for somewhere nearby to get a good evening meal and a drink or two. The Tavern in Ardler has excellent reviews on here so seemed the obvious choice. We were not disappointed. We took the precaution of booking ahead as it was Sunday night and had no trouble getting a table. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, service quick and efficient but not rushed. The menu offers a good range, plus specials, with a focus on fresh, local ingedients. We were well satisfied. We had starters, crab cakes and spring rolls, lightly battered and yummy. The chicken breast with skirlie was delicious, with a choice of potatoes or chips. No room for desserts, though they were tempting.Though a tavern in name, this place is about food, so tends to close once meals service is over. We walked down, a couple of miles, and hoped to order a taxi for the return journey, however were informed this would not be possible without having organised it in advance. To our surprise one of the staff, a lovely lady, in consultation with the landlord, offered to drive us back as her shift was finishing. Now that is what I call hospitality!. A couple of days later we went back again, this time taking the car, for Tuesday steak night. A good decision! The steaks (choice of sirloin or rib-eye) were melt-in-the-mouth delicious, so tasty and perfectly cooked. Served with proper home-made chips, onion rings, fried tomato and mushrooms. We were more than satisfied, too full, again, for pudding. If you are in the area I would definitely recommend the Tavern. Bring a hearty appetite.

My wife and I decided to go here for an evening meal, it was a Friday night and they had a good few tables booked, but managed to find us a table without too much problem. The menu is quite extensive with another 4/5 specials on offer as well. We chose to share a starter and had the Spring Rolls which were piping hot and of a very good size, one roll each was more than enough for us. My wife had the Chicken breast with asparagus and white wine sauce and I had the Chicken breast with skirlie. We both took quite some time to choose as the menu was so good. Both dishes were served with chips (although mashed or boiled potatoes were also on offer) carrots and peas. The chicken was cooked perfectly and just fell apart. After another debate about sweets we decided on the Lemon Meringue sundae and the Tavern Temptation - meringue with cream, hot toffee sauce and ice cream. Again We were not disappointed.Throughout the meal the staff were attentive and the service was prompt, all in all a very enjoyable experience, we'll certainly be back.

Went for lunch here today with 3 friends, and as usual we were not disappointed. The service was excellent with a very warm welcome on arrival and the food was delicious. Two had starters, followed by half portions of a main course, the other two had half main course and then pudding/tea or coffee deal. Everything was served as it should be - hot and on hot plates, the half portions were ample (not skimpy in the least!). As we also like to have a good catch-up with each other when we meet, this is a great restaurant for that, as you are not constantly being interrupted by the staff, but they are always on hand when needed. Food: selection of food from a menu of traditional pub food backed-up by a decent looking selection from a specials board. I had a home-made scotch egg and salad, which was nice.Service: Whilst the food was served quickly, the great service mentioned in the other reviews must only be reserved for locals. We popped into The Tavern after a walk in the Sidlaws and, whilst busy, it wasn't overly so. The landlord was joking away with some tables but cold with others. We were told that they were fully booked but, after some thought, were offered a sofa - I think more in the expectation that we would say "no, it's ok thanks" and leave. There were two empty tables of two we assumed must have been booked. Within five minutes of sitting down some more people came in and asked for a table (didn't have a reservation) and were told it was busy but were given one of the tables next to us. Whilst we were eating, and another large table was just finishing up, a group of four (def. not locals) came in and were told that the place was full (and given a recommendation elsewhere) - they surely could have been told if they waited two minutes they'd get a table? Two minutes after the larger table left, some more people ,who appeared to be locals, came in and were easily given the now empty table.Upon paying, the landlord was so busy joking with one of the others tables, he just placed my card and receipt back down on the bar without handing it back to me, without a glance or asking how the meal was.The other empty table of two was still empty by the time we left... All in all, a strange visit.

Lunch again in this splendid wee pub. Good fresh home produce doesn't disappoint - this time starting with a cracking trout pate - on our first visit there were lovely game dishes on the menu. The pub is comfortable, smart but characterful, and very friendly. Go on, make that detour and try it.- if you hate uppity gastropubs this is the place for you....

When travelling to work I spot the sign about The Tavern every day and decided to see. I liked how it is written. It says "DOON THERE"I've had Nut Roast and it was A M A Z I N G!! I haven't eaten something so tasty recently. The food was quite quick made and my husband had a very tasty fish and chips. Strongly recommend.

Slightly off the beaten track but not by much, we easily found the Ardler Tavern on our way back from Perth and parked at the roadside next to the tavern. The Tavern just looked like a quiet local pub and we weren’t sure if we had the right place but that’s exactly what it is. We hadn’t booked so were hoping there would be space to fit a table for two, and were lucky enough to get a free table at the window and nearby a lovely big log burning stove. The decor of this country tavern is exactly what you’d expect from a village pub, comfy sofas by the fireside and locals standing ‘holding up the bar’ as they used to say. Shelves were filled with books, games and a few antiques from the local area.Nearly every table was either occupied by people eating or waiting to eat, or reserved. Given how busy it was I think I’d recommend that you book a table if you want to go. The specials board and menus were given to us by a very friendly gentleman and we ordered our food and drinks from the table. I chose a starter of tempura vegetable selection, I’d love to say it was perfect, and that would be no lie as regards the batter, which the chef has definitely got right, but unfortunately a few of the vegetables weren’t quite to taste, the red pepper in particular was a bit bitter but maybe it was just my palate. My partner chose the garlic mushrooms which came, interestingly enough, inside a croissant! The mushrooms were beautiful, very tasty and in a gorgeous garlic sauce. Ideally they could have been served in an earthenware pot with crusty bread on the side, the croissant made it a huge starter and just a wee bit big.Main course and my partner chose the chilli burger off the specials board. He was extremely happy with this choice and his only preference would have been to have a sesame bun instead of a floury bap.I had the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. No complaints, everything was perfect, particularly the beef, delicious and locally produced. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, lovely atmosphere and we would definitely return again for another meal. Well done to all involved in keeping this tavern open when so many local pubs and restaurants are closing due to lack of trade, especially when it’s not on a main road! Thank you.

Called in for a midweek dinner and the food was superb so went back for Mothers Day. Once more we were delighted with the fare on offer, they even went the extra mile for a veggie and sorted a lovely mac n cheese. Staff and owner were extremely friendly and attentive to everyone, locals and strangers. Would definitely recommend for value.

I was hosting a large group of lads and The Tav did an excellent job of looking after us. Very friendly staff and Jim (the owner) has good banter and put up with us brilliantly. The food is spot on and it’s a cosy little place and somewhere, I feel, is well worth the detour. Keep up the good work Jim and team!

Would have been back sooner, but it is out of our normal circulation area. However, well worth another visit. The young and politely friendly barman / waiter looked after us very well in spite of having a busy-ish bar. My sausage and bacon casserole was just right for a cold evening. A huge mound of tasty mash topped with three sizeable sausages, the whole covered in a rich gravy containing generous pieces of grilled bacon. The others enjoyed their main courses - battered haddock, and home made steak pie.The pudding of the day was apple crumble with custard, which two of us had. Sadly, although very tasty, the crumble was not crumbly, probably because it had been microwaved. Perhaps they could keep the crumble hot in the same way as they keep the steak pie topping hot and crispy.Very good coffee.

Made a booking x2 weeks ago for a meal as a wee 'going away' present to my daughter and Grandson. Enjoyed a high tea booked for 17:00. Steak pie was lovely. Full of sweet chunks of beef, enjoyed by x3 patrons. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her Cajun Burger. Dessert was oodles of freshly made cakes. Anything you can't eat is presented to you in a presentation box for consumption later! Lovely staff and surroundings and plenty of parking at the rear or even outside the door if there's room. Kids meals.A big Stove in the lounge near the dining room, ready for the winter.I was informed that it can get busy on Sundays. If it was a popular tin of paint that 'does what it says on the tin' then The Ardler Tavern comes highly recommended.Verdict: A excellent country pub ready for the discerning punter.

My companion & I visited for lunch. She has been here several times before & was given a warm welcome by the staff. It wasn't at all busy while we were there and, as a result, we had great personal service. I loved the decor - it was light & airy & had a beautiful fire-place with a sleeper wood mantelpiece & brick surrounds & our tartan chairs were a nice touch. Quite a varied menu & we chose the roast beef with Yorkshire puddings. Interestingly, it wasn't served with the traditional roast potatoes, but a choice of chips or boiled potatoes. There were also carrots & peas. We chose our desserts from the specials board - toffee apple waffles with ice cream. We thoroughly enjoyed them. They serve great coffee, too. Lovely, friendly staff. I engaged our waiter in conversation more than was necessary, just to hear the wonderful Scottish accent! There are a few tables outside at the back. They take bookings & will give a table near the door if you request it, otherwise there is a step up to the main dining area. This is helpful for less able-bodied customers.

Although within a few minutes drive, the last time I was in the Ardler Tavern was probably over 30 years ago. My loss. The friendly young waiter / barman obviously knew his job well, taking our drinks and food order promptly and efficiently. Although we did not have starters, our main courses arrived promptly. My steak pie was excellent, a generous portion, tender beef, rich tasty gravy and that full of flavour layer of soggy pastry between the filling and the crust that proves they were baked together. The chips were near perfect. The only reason I have not given full marks is because the pie and my clootie dumpling (google it!) were not nearly hot enough. We will be back and expect to be able to give 5 stars this time.

This is a lovely place to eat, you are always guaranteed an excellent meal here, and, there are always good choices on the menu and also the 'specials board' we have never been disappointed. The scampi is the best I have ever tasted! The Highlander which is sometimes on the 'specials' is highly recommended! There is a cosy fire to add to the welcoming atmosphere. Jim is the perfect host, he always makes time to have a chat, and Ethan is always very pleasant, friendly and attentive. All in all a great place to dine.

Cant think of another word to say accept "FANTASTIC" what more do you want great cake - I don't know how they make them but they are delicious. The Earl Grey tea was perfect and piping hot. We took family who were on holiday in Perth with us and they enjoyed it so much that they went back again. I would recommend this Café to everyone the guys who run it are so cheery and welcoming.

Years ago, I received a free lunch at this place. The man serving me could tell from my expression and mood that I had been having a very difficult day. I never got the chance to say thank you, but I still remember it well. Good deeds do not go unnoticed.
