The Tap House in Nottingham

Hidden up an alley connecting two streets is this lovely little pub! It has a very unique system (although I suspect it will become more commonplace soon). Upon entering the staff take your name and you are provided with a plastic card. This is connected to your 'tab' and you place it in a slot on one of the many beer pumps and pour away. The amount you have spent to date is displayed in the corner of the screen and you can have as few or as many pints, halves etc. as you like! The choice of beers is vast and there were also ciders and lagers available as well as wine. Pizzas were also available to order although I didn't try these. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and happy to help you choose your beer and show you how everything works. I ended up having around two and a half pints in total over three different IPA's which cost me around £12 so given the average price of a pint it's pretty much on par. Would definitely recommend checking this place out if you like your ales - no more queuing at the bar!

Great place and good idea as people love the novelty of pouring they’re own pints. Not a huge drinker but for people who are this place is perfect . Guys are friendly and show you what to do . My one and only criticism is they don’t take cash but that’s my personal preference

Was recommended to the Tap House by a friend and was not disappointed. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, great concept (pour your own beer and only pay for how much you have like a petrol pump) and a great selection of beers that were well priced. Not much more to say other than try it out!

Love the idea. You get a 'tab' card in your name and can sample as little or as much of as many of the available beers as you like. As with petrol, you can do it by cost rather than measure, if you wish. Prices are relatively a bit on the high side, so I probably wouldn't spend a whole evening there, but there were some good (and some strong premium) beers on offer and it's definitely a fun way of having a beer or two, or just having your own mini beer festival and sampling a lot of beers. And you can see on screen when you place you tab card in one of the slots how much you're spending.

First time I ever heard or seen this anywhere! Great place try as many beers as you like. You want to taste them all go for it! You only pay for what you pour great concept! I’ve been to so many bars where I’ve paid for a pint or a half and it didn’t hit the spot!

Saw this place on a map and knew I had to go and see it for myself. Was greeting by the lovely Finn when I arrived and he was excellent at explaining the system and talking to me about beers! Also the sauce on their pizzas might actually be the best pizza sauce I’ve ever had. I don’t know what you do but my god I left the venue happy Definitely dragging my friends here the next time I’m in Nottingham.

Self-service beer - great idea for the bar!

I have to give myself five stars for service because I know how to pour a beer but my Deya was flat, it’s my favourite beer and it was lacking in carbon dioxide. The concept is fun, the music is good but it’s too hipster.

This is an extraordinary place. Self-service beer! It's such a good idea and you can try just a small amount of a number of beers to find your favourite. They serve great pizza too. A friendly place with very pleasant staff.

Great place to sample a range of beers. With lots of taps, you can pour as much or as little as you want. The tap tells you how much you're pouring and your cumulative spend. System works well as you're give a plastic card to record you're purchases. Staff really helpful. Love the place.

Very Polite staff for customers, I sat outside with my family and I asked for them for a seat and I got an very authentic seat that is amazing. The beers and the drinks are very valuable for money and atmosphere is very welcoming and know our needs I been here for my 28th birthday and been here today, worth very penny.

Came here for a night out with friends. I'd been to a place like this in Riga and have been on the look out for somewhere similar ever since. The staff are very friendly and helpful and despite a couple of the taps being faulty it was a great stop and i would love to go back one day

16 or more beers and a handful of ciders in a serve your self type venue, fantastic for real ale enthusiasts who want to try a load of different styles of beer. The self serve thing was easy to use and a bit of fun.

Very friendly staff and a great way to sample/drink different beers. Prices are very good. Didnt try the pizza but it smelt awesome.

Warm welcome by staff, process and beers explained, given your charge card and off you go to enjoy your drink. You put the charge card on a card tab above the beer pump, it then records how much beer your pour and gives you the running total so you know how much you are spending, it’s great so you try every beer by small samples before commuting to a bigger beer. The only downside was the beer prices, around £6.25 to £10.10 a pint. Most of the beers were quality and strong, so overall we would go back to sample different beers.

Love this place, very good vibe in house, and the self pouring taps are a laugh. But it’s not just a good gimmick, it’s genuinely a great way to drink and try lots of different beer without having to drink full pints. Student discount is also a great deal monday-Thursday.

The best place in Nottingham for beer if you are into craft. The pizzas are insane my eyes were bigger than my belly so I struggled to finish mine x

A great selection of craft keg beers in a nice environment and a fun way to buy your beer. You get given a card on entry and you choose your beer from the 10+ on offer. You then present your card which unlocks the tap and you dispense your own - as much or as little as you like. It's a great way to try new beers. When you are ready to leave, you settle your tab at the till. 👍

Great selection of beers and because you pour your own you can have as much or as little as you like of all the ones you want to try 🙂 Top tip though, if you try too many you can end up with a pretty serious hangover 😜

Good selection of beers and ciders on tap. The tap and pour concept is great and allows the opportunity to try options why you buy without being subjected to measures - keeping costs down and in control. The fridge is also packed with a vast range of drinks.

Giving 4 stars because the concept is great, only thing that let's it down is the lack of non alcoholic drinks. I was driving the evening of our visit and I was limited to either a can of Sprite or Fanta, I would have preferred something non carbonated but no options.

Great experience pouring your own beer, bar style food is good too. Make sure you check what you're pouring before you start, friends were caught out by the prices and strength of some of the beers.

Great idea to tast several kind of beer without pay too much! And play: at the enter you will receive a card by wich you will be allow to open every tap of the beer you want, for the quantity you want, and ypu will pay just for that. So you can taste even a sip of every beer, and they have tens! More, there you can find board plays and a smokers garden.

Love the idea / concept of the Tap House. Always great options available (drink) and staff are great! Brought friends here when they’ve visited Nottinghams and they loved it too. We’ll be back again!

Popular for Sunday Roasts. Only popped in for a drink, but by the looks of the plates of food that were coming out, you definitely get value for money. Staff are friendly and the toilets were clean.

A different selection of beers and spirits for you to try. Not the cheapest of prices. But worth a visit. A nice atmosphere within. You are given a card to activate the separate pumps, keep an eye on what you spend as you pay as you leave.

Love the idea of it & have seen the same thing in Riga (Latvia)...but on this occasion, despite there being loads of taps, there wasn't really anything we wanted. Oktoberfest was on so the taps were skewed accordingly. The staff were very helpful and the system was very slick...if they had 3 or 4 beers that we liked we would have stayed much longer, as it was we all had about a 1/3rd each & left.

Fun experience and a great place to spend anywhere from one drink to a whole evening. They rotate taps as well so not always the same drinks on offer when you come back. Particularly good for sours and pale ales. Also have some wine and cocktails on tap.

Great concept, executed well. You get to serve yourself, using a card given to you as you arrive to rack up drinks. Whilst some of it can be a little expensive, the offering is vast and the setting is great. The alleyway seating area is good for windy and rainier days, whilst the seating on Byard Lane gives the place a very European feel. If I’m ever in Nottingham to see friends, this place is always on my radar

Brilliant concept, you only pay for what you pour yourself which then gets charged to your tab. You can taste them all and then decide on one you want to drink more of. There was a great selection of beers as well as some cocktails.

Excellent bar, what an amazing way to sample cask ales and beers..you can choose your tipple try and buy.. Before you down a pint. !!..staff are so helpful..staff member Terry..was such a knowledgable guy and happy to explain in detail.. The ingredients brewing.. tastes..ect..infact.. what he doesn't know anout his business isn't worth knowing..!!.... Great vibe well worth a visit and a sample... We will return soon... Awaiting one of these amazing bars to open closer to where I live in Liverpool.. Fingers crossed

Great place. You get a credit style card on arrival. You pay for what you pour,so you sample any of the drinks and just pay for what you pour. Great idea!

What a great find! Tucked away down a side alley this excellent tap room has a beer wall where you can choose and serve your own drinks! Register at the desk and then place your card on the holder of your chosen beverage. Select your glass and open the tap. Watch the display and see the cost of each drink. You can have as little or as much as you like! The Tap House has something for everyone as alongside the beers were 4 ciders and 2 cocktails. But that's not all, they also serve fantastic Detroit style pizza squares - tasty toppings on fluffy pizza bread. Delicious!!

Nice atmosphere but very packed in, and it's far too easy to spend so much money as drinks are expensive

The choices are often expensive, but being able to sample something before committing to a pint of it makes it worth the cost. The outside seating is in the smoking area but overall a thoroughly pleasant experience.

Great place I have been trying to visit for so long but not close for me to get to. Eventually managed it and was a good experience a day the owner was really friendly and helpful. It's nice you can sample as much or as little as you wish from each of the pumps as you serve yourself. Great system showing how much you have spent to keep it under control. Looking forward to coming back.

Somewhere to visit that is just a bit different and you can sample as much as you like and pay at the end. I really enjoyed a fab 10.2 caribbean chocolate cake, super yummy and very drinkable. Friendly service and would visit again.

Very good selection of beers, with good turn over so you can go back many times and try something new each time. Amazing pizza, very different to other pizza and worth the trip just for that.

Then you settle up on exit. It's an amazing concept, and so much fun!!! Make sure you visit this bar when in Nottingham!!! Highly recommended.

Where to start. This is a must visit! Staff were really patient and helpful. The idea of it is fantastic. And a really good chance to try lots of different drinks without getting a big glass. Just wish we had found it sooner! Its such a good idea! Can’t wait to return!

Been to very similar pubs and bars like this in Germany and the Czech Republic, self service pay as you leave bars,this one is as good as I've found in the United Kingdom. The formula is easy, you're given a swipe card on entry, you choose your beer from along the beer wall and off you go ,stay for one ,stay for ten ,its up to you,as you're leaving you present your swipe card which reveals the price of the beers you've consumed ,its cool. The bar itself is nice, a big single roomed bar,wooden floors, cool decor and furnishings, an eye catching beer wall and plenty of seating options spread throughout this bar both inside and outside looking out onto the busy and bustling streets that form the Lace Market. My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Wednesday late evening, we sampled some great ipa's in here ,bar was busy, a really good atmosphere, ipa's were spot on ,so tasty, so refreshing on a really hot evening. We really enjoyed our beers and visit here ,will most definitely go again when we're back in Nottingham. The Tap House is easy to locate along Byard Lane. Opening hours are; Monday to Thursday, 3pm till 11pm. Friday, 3pm till Midnight. Saturday, Midday till Midnight. Sunday, Midday till 10pm. A wonderful bar ,great beers ,a bar I highly recommend you visit if you're in the area.

Brilliant idea for selling beer and a good selection

The Tap House in Byard lane is the UK's first self service craft beer bar and is housed in a former fashion designers shop where Sir Paul Smith the iconic fashion designer started his career. The Tap House has a superb craft beer look and feel with exposed brick walls and excellent tiling and wooden floors and on the right hand side a line of beer pumps offering an excellent range of beers which you serve yourself. When you entre this craft beer bar you are given a swipe card.The card you are given is when you go to the beer wall you pick your beer and use it to monitor how much beer you have drunk when using the self service beer pumps. When you are leaving they take the card off you and it tells the staff how much beer you have had and how much you owe them. I have been to pub's in the Czech Republic which are similar to this bar but not as good as the beer range in this Tap House is superb.When we where here we had a few IPA beers which were fantastic and surprisingly well priced. The Tap House is an excellent craft beer bar and is well worth visiting and is easy to find from Lace Market tram stop walk along Fletcher Gate then turn right into Byard lane.(This is my first review of the Tap House).
