Had the privilege of staying in this beautiful village overnight with the idea of climbing whernside. The pub itself is quaint with rustic Yorkshire Charm, very friendly staff and reasonably priced. The hotel room was beautifully laid out with a stunning view of the scenery and complimentary toiletries. Book room number 5 for the very spacious ensuite. The fittings although dated fitted perfectly with the location and the breakfast was beautiful with a very attentive member of staff! My recommendations would be forget civilisation, enjoy spending time with loved ones and savour every second in such a beautiful little village! Can't wait for my next stay and hopefully manage to climb whernside!

We spen 2 days in this beautiful village. We were lucky to arrive whilst there was a group of people over a couple of days jamming in the bar . Guitars, flutes, double bass and many more instruments. What an atmosphere. My kind of pub , warm welcome, traditional, log fire and cask ales . Only negative was no food being served. Definitely will return.

I stayed here one night while running the Dales High Way and it was honestly one of the best stays I've ever had. The room was cozy and spotless clean, with good wifi, TV, and tea/coffee. The shared bathroom was nice and clean too with a really nice hot powerful shower that I really didn't want to get out of. The breakfast in the morning was 10/10 and huge! But the best part was that the staff were amazing and went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. Due to lack of planning, I arrived at the pub without any food and assumed I could eat at the other pub in the village which turned out to be closed. The manager had been trying to call me all day to let me know but I was out of signal up in the hills. Even though they don't do evening meals, the lady behind the bar (I can't remember her name, sorry!) very kindly made me an amazing bacon sandwich. If I'm ever in the area again I will definitely stay another night and I'd recommend it to anyone.

We have eaten here before and this time was no better - I'm gf / vegan but I will eat fish if I have to. £7 + for a jacket potato - and tuna mayonnaise. The jacket potato was very small rather like a McCain's microwave one - basic tuna mayo and salad - well a bit of lettuce that was turning to an off colour. Hubby had sausage with thick chewy condom coatings and microwave veg - very disappointing and we want be eating here again - not cheap either. On the plus drinks are very reasonable Come on guys get in gear please up your game

The lovely village of Dent is graced by two pubs, The Sun and the George and Dragon. In the summer the village is also graced with very hungry walkers, campers, holidaymakers of all kinds. So you’d think that the pub would have the creativity to offer home cooked, tasty meals. But no. They described it as ‘traditional pub food’ - what they mean is lazy catering. Everything in the fryer or the microwave. No imagination in the menu. Forget it if you’re vegan. And it’s not cheap. Pennies short of £30 for fish and chips and steak pie and chips with a couple of pints. We felt depressed after eating there. And we think the beer is better in the George and Dragon - local Dent brew.

Despite the numbers of visitors Dent attracts, The Sun gives the feel of a good old-fashioned community pub. We dropped by on a chilly Monday evening; the young barman was friendly and the coal fire was burning merrily. We had a roast ‘special’ which was presumably what was unsold from Sunday, but still great grub. The beef was thick and juicy. Great value at less than £10. Good selection of ales as well. There was no background music to spoil the atmosphere and the background noise was the ticking of the clock, the crackle of the fire and the chatter of the locals. Pub heaven!

Visited the Sun Inn in the lovely village of Dent. Been here many times and can't fault the beer and atmosphere, however weve just had an awful meal, l opted for the Cumberland sausage with chips and mushy peas, the chips were dry and tasted of cardboard, the peas were tinned, but the shocker was the very tasty looking cumberland sausage. 3 large sausage which looked very appetizing, ok if you like herbs mixed with what tasted like sawdust. My wife's meal didn't fair much better, her meal consisted of undercooked new potatoes, steak and ale pie which looked like it had been thrown on the plate, over cooked and lookwarm, we left leaving virtually full plates and made haste to the next pub just a stone throw away. Wont be eating or recommending this pub again.

After 22 miles of walking the Dales way, I paid £10.25 to be served a burger, made up of 2 ‘beef patties’ which were basically frozen burgers (we’re talking a 4 pack for 99p from Farm Foods) 3 anaemic frozen onion rings, with half a block of cheddar melted on top, held together in a defrosted burger bun. The best bit was the salad which was fresh at least. I wasn’t asked if the meal was ok when the remains were taken away - probably because they know it’s awful and wouldn’t serve it to their own dog! Shame as Dent is such a lovely village. As a local, you’d no doubt have to drive out for a better experience. AVOID!!

This is perhaps a basic and down-to-earth pub, but it is an excellent example of the type. We were immediately made to feel welcome and there was a roaring fire. There was a bit of banter between the locals and it was in no way a soulless place. The choice of food was limited but adequate and tasty - and there was some more unusual food on offer: I had a delicious beef stir-fry on one visit. I would go back there with some enthusiasm if I am in Dent again.

We called in for an evening meal around 7.30pm on a Saturday. We didn't have to wait long for the food, presumably as none of it was freshly cooked. The fries, potato wedges, and jacket potato were obviously reheated (several times), the quiche was both hot and cold as well as rubbery and tasteless, and the cumberland sausage was overcooked and poor quality. We ate very little of the food and it was eventually cleared away by a member of staff who seemed very irritated when we confirmed that we had finished eating, but didn't enquire as to why we had eaten so little.

The pub itself is a lovely setting nice open fire and a rustic feel to it. However we overheard another couple ask if food was being served to which the bar staff said there was no food until Wednesday being that today was Monday and the previous week there was no food being served as shown on their Facebook page. The range of cider (this is our choice of beverage) was average the only draft was Strongbow with a few choices of bottled. We are staying at a cottage in Dent and thought we would try the Sun Inn for our evening meal after a fantastic day out walking in the Lake District. First impressions are not good when you walk in as everywhere feels worn and grubby. Given the age of the buildings in Dent this probably feels authentic for a lot of visitors but it's not for me.We ordered two Chicken Madras from the "specials" board, Scampi, Fish & Chips and Steak and Ale Pie. Portion sizes are very generous but the quality of the food ( with exception of the pie ) was poor. The "Madras" was chicken pieces in a tasteless luke warm gravy. I didn't eat it.The scampi had a very heavy deep fried coating which stuck to the teeth, very unpleasant. The fish was greasy with a very heavy batter. The pie got a thumbs up but accompanying chips and mushy pees were below par.I struggle to understand the 80 plus very good and excellent reviews. Either people have very low standards or a different chef was on when they visited.I don't like to leave negative reviews but I feel that visitors to the area need to know what to expect and hopefully the Sun Inn will act on the feedback.

Having read some of the reviews prior to staying in Dent we were somewhat cautious about what to expect. We shouldn't have been worried. Excellent beer - just perfect after a long day, and very good food. The food was simple fare but was cooked well and was always good quality. Don't go looking for cordon bleu, it is traditional stuff such as steak and ale pie or gammon steak. Lots of seating available. All the bar staff were friendly and welcoming. We were staying just round the corner, about 20 paces. There is parking for cars round the back. If you are coming from Sedbergh the turning is to the right just before the cobbles start. If you are coming from the opposite direction you will have to go over the bridge, along the cobbled street and as the cobbles finally stop turn left. We ate at the pub 4 times and were not disappointed. We recommend the real ale as it is properly kept. Normally from the local brewery.

We stopped here for a night whilst walking the Dales Way and received a warm welcome. All the staff with whom we came in contact were extremely friendly and helpful as were the locals in the bar (and their assorted dogs!!)The menu was made up of typical'pub grub' - fish and chips, steak pie etc.. but all well cooked and plentiful quantities. Breakfast was memorable - a huge, expertly cooked 'full English' served by a real character of a waitress! Thanks to all the staff for a great stay! We'll definitely be back!

Went for a lovely drive around Dentdale. Ended up in Dent, parked up, had a walk around beautiful village and Churchyard. We were ready for a drink and opted for Sun Inn. What a disappointment. I stood by the bar waiting for the barman to take my order. He took order from 2 customers, then proceeded to chat to gentleman sitting by the bar. At no point I was greeted, acknowledged or smiled at by the barman. I must've been invisible to him In my bright purple fleece. There was no one else in.We looked at each other confused (with my husband) and left.Ended up in lovely Pheasant Inn in Carterton. Couldnt be more different. Welcoming, charming staff, great choice of drinks and delicious food.We ended our day out in Dentdales on a high, no thanks to the Sunn Inn.

Been here several times needs massive revamp. Food normal pub food but more chips on plate that anything else. Over weekend there were more dogs than humans, I understand the area attracts campers/walkers but dogs and food not to keen on.

I'm a local and I'm getting sick and tired of hearing the complaints; I went there last month and ordered some food. The ingredients were cheap and... well, it's not what it used to be. The place could do with some entertainment - it doesn't even have a radio! It's the place to go for a quiet drink and low expectations, but this pub could do SO much more! Despite the odd successful attempts of excellent customer service with most of the usual staff being friendly and helpful enough, one particular bar-woman is constantly the topic of village gossip for being rude and indifferent to tourists and locals alike (and rightly so - I've been on the receiving end of the bad attitude also). The place needs an overhaul and I won't apologise for this bad review, despite every likelihood of being recognised - I'm being honest. I used to eat and drink here every day when I first moved into the village, but I got discouraged by some of the bad attitudes I've met there. I still used to go in every week for the brilliant food from their kitchen staff. Now, not so much - it's getting worse and worse with every visit. Every business relies on 'word of mouth' advertising and marketing, no matter how much revenue is spent on other methods, and this particular venue isn't achieving anything good right now. It needs significant improvement and I feel the owners might be losing heart and ambition. They need a kick up the proverbial and do something to change its current image, maybe even modernise and keep up with the rest of the pub trade - otherwise it's in danger of closing like the thousands of other pubs who failed to do so over the past decade. While its trade relies on passing tourism, this pub is just a pub. If some locals prefer it to be 'just a pub,' then you're going to lose it eventually. TL;DR - It's nowhere near as good as it used to be and could be friendlier, modernised, and more welcoming to fulfil the best of Customer Expectations.

The Sun Inn dates from about 1642, and the narrow cobbled street outside can be tricky for anyone with walking difficulties. This is a very old building which has not had the guts ripped out of it, and which provides good portions of traditional English pub food.We enjoyed our food very much, and stayed the night. Because this is a very old building, the bedroom was basic and the bathroom was shared. There was also very loud live music the night we stayed, which kept us awake.I would happily eat there again. Full of character!. But I wouldn't stay overnight.

There's not a huge range of dishes on offer but what they do is done in large portions and is pretty good and great value, especially if you've just had a long walk. Friendly staff, good beers and overall a really pleasant, friendly place to visit. Visited at different times so had lunchtime snacks and dinner.

Stopped here for a quick lunch while walking along beautiful Dentdale on a cold winter's day.Decent burgers and really fabulous chips set us up nicely for the afternoon. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.

We should have known this was going to be a poor experience when we walked through the pub door on a cold and rainy day when we were told "No, don't sit there. I haven't cleaned it yet and there's carrots on the floor" in a brusque and unwelcoming tone. Perhaps the single most unwelcoming comment I have ever received. Nor have I ever met anyone less equipped to work in the hospitality sector than the woman behind the bar. We should have turned on our heels and gone out there and then and saved ourselves about £70 which we wasted on a Sunday dinner that was utterly average for its money. A tiny portion of mashed potato that was cold. Uninspiring carrots and peas and what tasted like a frozen yorkshire pudding with roast beef in it. On the plus side the beef was definitely from a cow. But a tough old cow! We didn't stay around for pudding. We'd had enough by this time. Our advice. Don't waste your time or money.

Popped in here on Halloween. Asked about some darts and the nice ladies behind the bar spent a good 10 mins trying to find some but sadly could not. The service was fast and friendly and the selection of real ales good. We returned the second evening for a meal after a disappointing welcome at the other pub in the village. I mentioned to my fella that the service had been good and we should try the food. I had the steak and ale pie and he the Cumberland sausage. Portions were plentiful and really tasty. The only Improvement that I would suggest would be home made proper chips! If you're going to go to the effort of making your own pie and sausage on the premises, go the whole hog and do proper chips!! You'll be packed out!!

Used to visit here a lot but... the unfriendly, miserable old woman behind the who rarely say please or thank you makes the whole experience a distasteful one. Apart from that the place is ok

First the good bit - it has a car park. Now for the rest - Don't visit this establishment if you have children who dare to make noise. We were made to feel very uncomfortable by bar staff. We arrived early evening and the pub was extremely quiet, possibly 5 people stood at the bar talking to the member of bar staff. We were a party of 4 adults, 2 children and a todler, who planned to have a drink and a meal as an anniversary celebration. The children had tablets with headphones plugged in and the todler had a baby 'laptop' with the volume on the lowest setting. Whilst ordering drinks we were asked if we could turn the sound off on the tablets and baby toy as it can be very irritating for other customers. The only other customers were having a loud conversation whilst we sat in a different section of the pub! I appreciate the pub and vilage are very old however the pub itself is desperate for an update. We didn't even get as far as looking at the menu as we finished our drinks and left.......To go to the brilliant George & Dragon down the street who benefitted from our custom due to their welcoming and helpful attitude.

Popped in for a number of beers earlier this month, and 4 of us all had the gammon meal. Excellent! The barmaid was very friendly and accommodating, even giving us a price list for rooms in case we returned in the future. I'm sure we will be back!

Great service compliments the menu which always has a Sunday roast dinner on Sundays. You need to book in advance to ensure of a table at your chosen time as there is nothing worse than being turned away and having to wait for a table.

We arrived in lovely sunshine but were disappointed to find that contrary to the impression given in the advertisement by Lakeland Retreats of sitting on your decking enjoying the sun there is no sun as the Lawns is surrounded by high trees making the interior constantly dark. You have to put the lights on for your breakfast and if you eat in later in the day then also. My partner decided to have a bath the first night but unfortunately contrary to the management company's assertion that there's a constant supply of hot water the hot water ran out and the water turned cold. This happened twice as it did to our neighbours in the adjoining Lakeland Retreats property. We normally have a cooked breakfast on a Sunday but we were appalled to find that the two frying pans supplied were pitted with rust and unusable. Finally as the season turned from summer to autumn the evenings got a little nippy. We tried to turn up the storage radiators but found that the controls are blocked by wooden brackets screwed over the radiators so you can't use them. A beautiful area but we won't be using Lakeland Retreats again if this is the standard they aspire to!

Went for afternoon tea. Lovely venue and pleasant staff but the Afternnon tea was dissapointing, the single very lonely pig in a blanket was nice..but no sandwiches, little bits of fancy coloured cakes. No nutritious value. Not my cup of tea i'm afraid and had to go looking for somewhere to eat after we left. And £60 for the experience☹🤣..that is 3 exellent afternoon teas for 2 at our local cafe still in the lakes!.. but it is the lakes after all...££££££££££££££££££.
