The Strange Catch in North Somerset

TOILETS ARE AWFUL. This is 2025 and they have not seen any refurb since 70's apart from 12 layers if paint. Now onto the food: Fish was great had very tasty batter, Childrens menu popcorn chicken had weird flavour and was way too spicy for children meal. Mushy peas very watery. Tartare sauce never arrived, but to be fair we did not bother asking for it. Very generous portion of chips, probably bit too much, as most of it went to waste. Very nice and polite server. We have been lured in by very high reviews but you cannot be 5* with such low level of facilities

Lovely fish and chips right near the beach. Food was freshly cooked for us, and the other guests who were in attendance at the same time; which meant we had to wait a little longer than you normally do for fish and chips, but it was steaming hot and wonderfully cooked. We'll worth the wait. It was preferable to the norm. Also dog friendly! Fish was lovely, chips lovely and mushy peas and curry sauce also great. Reasonable and competitive prices.

We had a delivery last night, haddock, chips and curry sauce. The best fish, curry sauce and chips in weston. Well done we will.order again very soon.

Where do I start. Chips where horrendous frozen and half cooked. The tiny frozen fish that came out of a box which I saw with my own eyes was dry and tasteless. 2 fish and chips 3 sauces and 2 cans £29 don't waste your money.

Great takeaway and a few chairs to eat in. Really close to the sea front. Fab chips on a not very nice day and great customer service too. Thanks!

Great place offering gluten free fish and chips (pictured) and a whole host of other gluten and non gluten containing items! Good value, I think they could be more generous with their condiments, lovely tartare sauce.

Very expensive for what you get. Gluten free cod and chips the box was half empty, the chips were over done clearly the fryer oil needed changing. Below average. Kids popcorn chicken is spicy so wouldn’t recommend for kids. Non gluten food was bang average. Overpriced and poor/average quality. Had better fish and chips and better GF chippy elsewhere.

Whilst visit Western Super Mare had lunch here with my husband . The fish and chips were delicious. The portion was generous considering we ordered a small cod n chips. Would definitely go back when I’m visiting again.

Well located fish and chip takeaway which also has a variety of options such as burgers, burritos etc. There is a reasonable amount of seating and no extra charge for eating in. Food is reasonably priced and portions are okay. Unfortunately the quality is not great. The haddock was not particularly flavourful and had soggy batter despite eating in. Chips are bought in frozen, which is not good enough. Chippies should be making their own chips. Mushy peas come out of a can and the curry sauce was a little watery. Service was fine, the server didn't speak much English but was polite enough. Overall okay but there are better options in Weston for fish and chips.

Good clean restaurant with friendly service. Food was well cooked and non-greasy. I would say that portion size was average. The potatoes for the chips had black bruise marks but tasted OK.

Freshly made gluten-free fish and chips and curry sauce (a rareity for GF folk) was absolutely delicious and the service was great too. Highly recommend for a fish and chip stop by the beach.

Fish and chips are amazing!! My son had a ricebox which was also delicious, think I will be having a rice box next time!! Staff were lovely, polite and friendly staff and the service was quick. Highly recommended, love this place!

Don't be fooled! This place is now under new ownership and is not what it used to be. The fish has gone way down in quality, and a 'large' fillet is now small. The chips are also poor. A change of hands has reduced this once excellent fish & chip outlet to just another poor to medium (at best) quality chip shop. Look elsewhere. I paid £32.25 for three small (supposed to be large) pieces of very poor fish and a standard portion of chips, made from poor potatoes poorly cooked. This has instantly slipped from a once 5 star fish & chip outlet (one of the best in town) to a sub standard rip off. BEWARE!

Absolutely amazing. I had the S/F chicken, lettuce and tomato wrap with bacon and it was heavenly; my brother had the burger and chips he also loved it; my mum who is gluten free had the fish n chips and said it was the best she’d ever eaten. Highly recommend the wraps they are amazing

GF fish & chips & 1 normal. Absolutely delicious. Cooked fresh, everything in meal gf from vinegar to curry sauce to fish batter & chips... Wow just wow!!! This young man cooking should be an inspiration to other chip shops. He was bang on with knowledge and appreciation of a very difficult medical condition, to eat, within fast food restaurants. 100% recommended

The worst chips iv ever had from a chip shop, they were really dry and hard and couldn’t eat them. Price was a rip off aswell £14 for 2 portions of cheesy chips that we didn’t eat

Visited here tonight, decent fish and chips, with some solid alternative options if family or someone don’t want fish and chips. Reasonably priced also and cooked to order. We had regular cod, fish bites, regular chips, curry sauce and mushy peas. Fish was decent, flakey and flavourful but would say it was a touch greasy for me, a lot oil left on the box, oil seemed fresh tho. The chips were ok also but would loved a second cook on them and just get that outer crisp a bit more present. Cod bites kinda like smaller off cuts off fish battered and crispy if you like the ends of you’re battered fish these are the one as it’s like those crispy nice ends I enjoyed these. Both curry sauce and mushy peas were fresh and decent sized tubs, curry was nice decent all round flavour. Would go again probably one better ones in Weston tbh, it’s not thrown together and unthought about. Would rate this a solid 7/10.

I must apologise for not trying this place sooner. Living in Weston this is now our chippy of choice Much better than the supposedly best round the corner, don’t do Papas try here. Well Done Guys

We was in the area on Scout camp and needed 43 portions of fish and chips to eat on the beach at WSM, so we phoned around different shops until we found one that was happy to provide for us, and Pete and his team did just that, we had 43 happy campers enjoying a very tasty dinner on the beach. Thank you for an excellent dinner.

Spoke to pete at the shop and pre ordered 45 meals for our scouts They did amazing hot food, all ready on time, gave us a good discount for large group. Supplied salt, vinegar and ketchup. Highly recommend- especially for groups

Lovely gluten free fish. Batter was nice and crispy. The only chip shop I found in the area that is actually gluten free. Husband had the hot dog and said it was amazing.

Came here for the gluten free fish and chips because my partner is coeliac. We were super impressed that gf is offered, and even more impressed that the batter on the fish was as crunchy as normal fish and chips! We're here for a week, will definitely be returning a couple of times as it was phenomenal. Super recommended!

This is the nicest fish and chips I’ve had in years in this town, price was fab! I was worried it wouldn’t be real chippy curry sauce as everyone uses mayflower ☹️, but it was old school curry sauce with the bits in exactly how a chippy curry should be! Fish was LOVELY and fresh! Portion size perfect, and I’m a big eater! Chips taste lovely, very happy with my order tonight & love that it comes with tartar sauce! 😋👌 thanks guys xx

Visited yesterday! Clean, friendly and super efficient people! Portions of the food just the “ right size”. ( many chip shops serves huge portions I don’t like that ) this one was just the right one! Additionally their fishes come from better sources. Amazingly they don’t use plastic packaging, and I loved their mushy peas! I am so impressed with their service, people who work there, work very hard to make sure everything runs smoothly and you can spot that from the first impression when you come in. Much appreciated, I will recommend you to anyone I know, and definitely come back next time! Cheers! 👋

The fish and chips were excellent. Having looked at the ratings prior to visiting it was decided to try here. I'm very glad that I did as the quality was excellent and the service very friendly and welcoming.

Was looking forward to fish and chips here as they do gluten free for my wife. And have good reviews. Sadly disappointed . Staff were great but the food was a great disappointment. Both the normal and gluten free meals smelled and tasted of stale oil ? Could they have been cooked in the same fryer? ( then could not be called gluten free). Sorry will not go again.

After researching GF friendly options for our visit to WSM, we had no doubt in our mind that we would visit 'The Strange Catch.' My daughter really struggles to get decent fish and chips locally. However, the Facebook page, 'Coeliacs eat out too' made us feel that this would be a safe place - and boy, it did not disappoint. A whole GF menu with extremely aware staff. Able to explain the frying system in the back kitchen, offering GF vinegar etc - and she had no reaction - bonus! We sat in and ate - this is not a restaurant, but has a table for four and two large benches that seat 6 comfortably. The portion sizes were huge and the food was delicious. We 100% recommend this place

We visited here as it came recommended as a place catering to a gluten free diet. The gluten free fish was amazing, my husband actually thought it was nicer than his regular fish. The chips and curry sauce were lovely. They could consider serving the gluten free batter to everyone as it was so crispy!

We regularly go to Weston-super-Mare. (Have done for years). We use the same fish and chip shops on the seafront. Fancied a change. Had a quick look and found this gem of a chippy. Best fish and chip shop in Weston-super-Mare by far. The fella who served us was amazing and the food was even better. Every time we visit Weston-super-Mare we will be going there. Amazing

Possibly the worst chips I’ve had, had a weird taste to them. Could tell they are not freshly cut from POTATOES. Not sure what oil was used but tasted off. Confused why it’s so highly reviewed, come to Norfolk, I think every single chip shop Is better than this. Expensive as well, £3.50 for some chips. Scandalous. The crows and seagulls enjoyed them though, so atleast that’s a positive. 🦤

Having not been from the area, we walked around alot of places trying to find one that was gluten-free to be told about this place. The staff were very friendly, and nothing was to much trouble.

Terrible, don't understand how this fish & chip shop has got such a high google review. Staff who seemed to have no clue what they were doing and possibly the worst chips we have ever had! If we hadn't already driven away from the area I would've taken them back. The fish was okay but not particularly crispy. Very disappointed.

Finding gluten free fish and chips is such a rare thing. But finding it with exceptional service is just another level. They couldn’t do enough for us and talked us through everything. Catered for the kids and the food was simply delicious. Our party ranged from 7 to 82 and all were happy. Made our day. Also all the packaging was sustainable and recyclable 🙌

This place is a little gem! Walk just off the main front, past the mural of the turtle and the whale and its right there! Food was cooked fresh to order, staff were kind, friendly and accommodating and they were happy to let us eat in to get out of the storm! Prices are fantastic for the portion sizes, variety on the menu and the freshness! Step away from the convenience of the chippys on the front and walk another 30 seconds down the road to support this small business ... its well worth it!

Finding somewhere for gluten free food is always a struggle but we are so glad we found this place it’s a hidden gem! Gluten free Cod and Chips was crispy and not greasy, and my partner loved the gluten free curry sauce! Likewise my scampi & chicken strips were juicy and crispy. The staff were so welcoming and it was just a lovely vibe there, had moments where it was very busy but with service like this it was to be expected, will definitely return again!

A nice small chippy that hasn't let the location kill the quality. Worth the very short walk from the sea wall too grab and go. Freindly staff, lovely food and quick service.

We didn’t realise you ain’t normally open on a Sunday but still went out your way to make our gluten free food. We appreciated it so much, not only that food was incredible 👏🏼 thank you so so much

Absolutely delicious cod and chips. I had small cod and small chips and it was more than enough for the average person. The fish was fresh and cooked beautifully, as were the chips. Friendly, cheerful staff and good value for money.
