A really great local pub and restaurant. We stopped here three times during our walking in The Lakes, once for food and twice for drinks after walking the fells. We always received a warm welcome and enjoyed the wide selection of brews. Food was great, high quality pub food that catered well for vegetarian and vegan options with everything accurately labelled. Lovely open fire place and great atmosphere with lots of people enjoying the food and ambience. Recommended.

Stayed for two nights and had two evening meals. Great atmosphere, locals included, book a table for a time and if you just turn up expect that table to have a name and time on it. Great pub food, good veggie options, my wife enjoyed a good one and she’s not veggie. The pork ribs were great and I took great delight watching a southern eat them with a knife and fork 🤣 I didn’t ! The breakfast was brilliant nothing fancy but good quality sausage and the waitress and kitchen staff were engaging and happy and that’s what makes a place. Will recommend to others. Especially the location for Wasdale area

Family meal, after a recommendation. Unfortunately we weren't impressed by the meals. My burger sounded awesome on the menu however it was nothing more than a sausage and egg sandwich in ciabatta bread. Aiting times were long too, even yhough we had booked. Wouldn't go back for food. It was a lovely pub though and staff were lovely.

We waited ages to be seated, staff just ignored us. I saw my name on a reservation on a table do we seated ourselves. My friend went to the bar for drinks, after a very long time was served and asked for a pint and was told that beer was off and he proceeded to disappear for a while. In return he went to serve someone else! My friend pulled him up and he then carried on serving her-no apology! We then got menus, with 1 vegan option on it. Apparently this is in the top 10 vegan restaurants, not sure where as the claim doesn’t go any further than that! To be honest, I had been there before and the good was good and I was looking forward to returning. By the time we had the drinks and where told it would be over an hour for food we settled the bill and left to go elsewhere.

This is a very old, traditional pub with accommodation upstairs. We visited on a beautiful Sunday evening. The pub has plenty of parking and is very old and traditional. On entering it took quite a while for staff to acknowledge that we were waiting but eventually we were shown to a table. It was quite busy inside with people sat at tables for food and others near the bar for a drink. It was clear there was a mix of tourists and regulars inside. Service was a bit slow so we ended up ordering at the bar. We ordered a Beef roast and a vegetarian roast. All I can say is the food was amazing. Everything was cooked to perfection and the Beef just fell apart and was so soft and flavoursome. The rest of the plate was full of potatos, veg and a Yorkshire pudding. For dessert we shared a sticky toffee pudding which was also very good. Overall the food was delicious but the service and atmosphere let the pub down. If you can put up with the querks it is well worth a visit for the food

2nd visit in 6 months. A good mix of locals and tourists. Good choice of beers. Plenty of pub grub to choose from but don’t expect gastro or fine dining quality. Really weird thing is food orders are taken at the table but you have to go to the bar to buy drinks that then get out on your table tab. An ok place to eat after a long walk in the beautiful surrounding countryside

An amazing whisky tasting experience for my husbands birthday. Mark and Lesley gave an exceptional service of amazing whiskys cheeses, Tapas, dark chocolate and the best home cooked chips we've had in years and the staff in the kitchen and front of house were fantastic. Great home made food. Fish and steak pies contained loads of meat - far more than normal and great friendly service as well. Beware the portions are very generous! Selection of on site brewed beers was great with six on offer and all good.

I stayed here for two nights, to do some fell walking. The pub is relaxed and friendly, family run and orientated. The food, breakfast and dinner, is excellent. It is totally unpretentious, and the cask beers are all from the attached micro brewery. My room was comfortable, but basic, with an excellent bathroom. The landlady, Linda, can’t do enough for you. Look forward to returning.

An amazing place to eat - fabulous food and great service! We were a walking group of 15 who had pre-ordered, and after a day on the hills the food was just what we needed. Despite being such a large group, the food all arrived together, larger than average portions (gammon the size of the plate, fish pit brimming over the dish!), and was incredibly tasty. Some of us had deserts and these were fantastic too. Many of us ate there the following day as the food was so good - and we did the quiz! I would thoroughly recommended the Strands Inn as a great place to eat - friendly staff, old fashioned pub, amazing food, in the heart of Wasdale

We ate here twice. Lovely food. Dog friendly as can take dogs inside. Arty the lurcher became a super model with the locals taking photos of him. Felt very welcome amongst the locals, Arthur and his lovely wife. We will be back on our next visit. Lemon posset was so good, as was the cod, and the blackpudding and chorizo stack. We appreciate your hard work at a time that all the hospitality industry is struggling for staff, even more so in a remote area. Thank you. The Davidsons and Arty dog

Don’t even attempt to go, phone is unmanned with a message saying they don’t answer it and don’t leave a message as they don’t listen to them. Contact via e mail on web site. That done, still no response we drove over to see if we had a booking. Sign on bar saying no more food available, when I queried our e mail, apparently they don’t respond to those either if they can’t fit you in! Appalled, at such lack of professional courtesy and didn’t even stay for a drink. Clearly can’t communicate appropriately with customers.

Booked 2 nights at The Strands, also had dinner both nights and thoroughly enjoyed staying. The dinner was generous as was breakfast both mornings, the room (across in The Screes) was large and very comfortable. The only issue we had was when showering, the water tended to go from very warm to rather too hot. That said, we would definitely stay again and recommend this olde worlde pub/hotel to others.

This is a very welcoming honest, local community pub, not a sanitised tourist venue nor a gourmet restaurant. The owners and staff are very welcoming, down to earth and incredibly hard working. The ambience is most definitely that of a friendly local pub. The location is perfect for walking. Of the six beers on tap, all brewed here, I tried four.. all fabulous. The home distilled gin is also marvellous. We had a good sized room, good meal, superb breakfast.. if you like a traditional full English. ( Also caters for vegans ). I most heartily recommend this pub for anyone who doesn’t appreciate pretence!

We stayed there during their Beer festival in May. First of all. Lake District is for sure one of the most beautiful places in the UK. This Pub fits in the scenery perfectly. Very remote in between a fantastic landscape. We arrived and had lunch. Burger and Lasagne. Both great. Especially the burger was very good. During our stay we had Dinner there as well. Everything we ate was really good. Breakfast was Full English and of course you could chose the items you wanted. The beer selection is phenomenal. They brew their own beer. Proper Ales and other stuff. If you don't like Ales don't worry. They have Lager, Guinness etc. on tap as well. Very friendly staff. Rooms had everything you need. If you want some kind of an escape I can recommend this Pub. You can start your tours here, pop in for Lunch, Dinner or Drinks or stay overnight. Last but not least. For those who can't switch off their phones. They have good and stable Wi-Fi.

The food itself was very tasty. Portion sizes were extremely generous and I could only eat half my main dish. Really refreshing to see such a wide variety of vegan dishes on the menu, I wish I could have tried them all. Only niggle was the slow service, it was great to see them busy however this meant the service suffered. We arrived at 7pm for a 7.10pm booking and it took a good 25 mins for menus to be brought over to us. They finally came to take our order 40 minutes after sitting down, and we were then asked if our starters and mains could be brought together as the kitchen was closing.

I cannot be blunter than that. We had the misfortune to be taken in by what looked like excellent food. But our experience was awful. Avoid this pub if you like good pub food. First the service was abysmal. There were three of us but only one person was served food. So we waited for the other two dishes to be served... And waited... and waited. We took to picking at the one dish like hungry birds. It looked so tasty. By the time the other dishes arrived one of the side dishes that has arrived first was cold and greasy. Then we had to remind the server that we actually needed knives and forks. But it was the food that was the big disappointment. It looked fantastic but looks in this case are deceiving. I had the pork ribs and they were utterly unpalatable, as they were so exceedingly fatty. Every mouthful was thick with tasteless fat. I could not eat it. My wife gave me her steak and ale pie. That was quite good; except it was smothered in a quite awful gravy that was sour and overwhelming. We left with both dishes unfinished. And the third dish? Scampi and chips... Like you get at the chippy for less than a tenner. But this one cost far more than that. Edible but poor value. There's another pub down the road in Santon Bridge. We ate there. The same prices and not exactly brilliant food; but satisfactory and served professionally. We had a great evening there. Go there As for the Stands...no amount of old world charm can compensate for the vile food we had to face.

Very busy and short staffed. Food a little boring and more in line with cafe than pub grub. Landlady stressed and commented that she could smell our wet dogs and that she had to clean the place. Sorry if your stressed but don't take it out on your paying customers. Or if you don't like wet dogs then why say dog friendly. No me malinterpretes. . . El desayuno era encantador y todos los productos son tan frescos y bien cocinados. Ambos pubs son retiros acogedores súper encantadores para caminantes / turistas. . . y aunque ni yo ni mi pareja tomamos cerveza de verdad. .

Had a lovely few hours here on Saturday. We’d booked for 8 people @ 5pm. When we got there we were shown to our tables, with a sign on it saying reserved at 5pm (us) and 8pm. Three hours seemed a reasonable amount of time for us to have the table, as we had 4 young kids to put to bed. There is a kid’s menu, but to be honest it wasn’t very good and none of the kids were interested in it so the 6 year olds each ordered an adult lasagne which they pretty much polished off (rated 100/100 by the kids), and the 8 year olds ordered pizza also from the adult menu - their leftovers were put in a takeaway box for us to take back to our campsite (it was good cold and was apparently amazing hot). My ribs were not amazing, but were good. The chilli was reportedly very good, but the meat to rice ratio was on the low side. The wine was decent and the beer from the microbrewery proved popular. The waitress was fantastic - very friendly, great with the kids. Great atmosphere, would definitely return (just watch out for the darts board if you use the bathroom!)

We went to The Strands following a strenuous walk nearby. Unfortunately, the quality of the food seemed dependent on which menu was used. My wife and I weren't particularly hungry so opted for a 'gourmet' fish finger sandwich (about £6) and a cheese and bacon toastie (also around £6). What constituted gourmet for the fish finger sandwich was anyone's guess - though the white bread was cut at a jaunty angle so maybe that's it. Both sandwiches very poor. However, my mother, sister and brother-in-law chose from the main menu and their food looked really nice! I think that all the food should be good quality, and if they use words such as 'gourmet' you ought to get so something other than a few cheap-looking fish fingers in white bread!

Lovely Christmas meal here although maybe a few roast items missing from what we'd expect (parsnips not roasted, no pigs in blankets!). Roasties could've been better. But always very warm and friendly, games available for kids, and great beer. One of our favourite pubs.

Lovely evening with friends enjoying good food and real ale. The pub has its own micro brewery which has been around for some years now. Local musicians provided great entertainment and we all joined in. Great, friendly atmosphere. Food good for vegetarians.

We called in after walking around the wastwater area. Nice friendly welcome, lovely cosy feel to the place, and good selection of ales, some made in the village. A few in eating meals, and they seemed to be enjoying them.

STAND OUT- WELCOMING AND TRUSTING LIKE OLD FRIENDS. The lady who ran The Strand was so welcoming and friendly and I believe her mum ran the pub right across the road. They were all very accommodating and put me+partner and my friend up in the last 2 remaining rooms. We had decided last minute to ditch the camping plan after a heavy day and night of rain. We ate their food and drank in the bar until bedtime- exactly what we wanted after a hard days hike!!! The room I stayed in was plush and comfortable. Would highly recommend!

I have just phoned up today to book a Sunday Monday deal and was bringing all my family up in October for the quiz which was run by mark the manager not the owner. Only to be told by some male member of staff, that the managers mark and Chris have been sacked for stealing and attitude. We can’t believe this as they was both doing such amazing job and was a breath of fresh air. Mark run a amazing pub quiz which was funny and he always had banter with the locals. Well all I can say is I’m sorry they have gone and wish them both all the best and if mark or Chris ever read this let us know when you get a new place as we would be made up to come and say hi and stay in your new b&b.; I just can’t believe what the member of staff said about mark and his partner. As they both had nothing but really nice things to say about the owners and staff. Such a shame.

I've bee reading some of the latest reviews on this pub and can't believe waht i am seeing with the lower ratings. I booked a table at the pub a week before I went to climb Scafell Pike, climbed Scafell Pike and turned up at the pub 20 minutes later than booked, with the expectation we would be turned away. The pub is small and was incredibly busy, however we were welcomed in and made comfortable at our table by staff. The staff were helpful despite being rushed and more than happy to explain the menu. The food wasnt expensive and was of good quality, couldnt fault it or the staff,

On arrival our group of 8, after a tiring days walking were ready for Dinner, only to be told that they had no booking despite diligant booking by one of our party a week previously. After some fuss, we were seated in a side breakfast room. We ordered drinks, poor service at bar, then as we were 3 families we ordered separately, so far so good. A young girl was in her first night, and an older lady very apologetic grafted hard to cover the issues. But Dinner arrived in stages, so slow that 2 orders were missing, by the time these arrived half the group had finished. Food was ok, average pub grub with fresh veg. There then ensued a long delay with only half the plates cleared, no sign of finishing and no desert menu, after a complaint to the bar, the lady battled to get sorted and took desert orders, these arrived again in stages, the last 2 being sticky toffee pudding that were burnt ( overdone in microwave ?) Complained again these were swapped. When we then went to pay the bills were a mess and a good job we were honest. It seems a shame to mark them down as short-staffing on a busy Friday in August holidays and a distinct lack of organisation and leadership was the cause, and the 2 ladies we felt sorry for. But when leaving 2 other chaps had appeared & were behind the bar, an older chap who I'd thought was a customer and a younger chap who I'd thought was a handyman, who didn't much in earlier when the chips we're down, and also a frequent wanderer from the kitchen of a chap in whites, who had no sense of urgency. But please decide what you are, are you a drinking den for locals or an eatery of some sort. This has so much potential, get your act together rapidly or the winter will kill this sort of business's ineptitude, with no leadership and whole team effort, and give the 2 ladies some support before you scare these 2 grafters away. 2 stars only given due to these 2 ladies.

We had a meal for 4 adults and 3 kids. The menu choice is quite limited with little choice for vegetarians. The food was nice but nothing special. The kids portion of sausage was enormous!!! And the chicken korma was delish except they ran out of mango chutney.

This is a grand place. They have their own brewery, always serving 5 or 6 of their own interesting, well kept beers. Good food menu, well cooked and presented at a reasonable price. Very busy at weekends considering is a bit out of the way so worth booking in advance. Set in the lovely village of Nether Wasdale, with a very good campsite (Church Stile Farm) just a hundred yards away, and some of the most beautiful countryside anyone could hope for.

Really busy place with friendly staff. We had steak and ale pie and it was great. The pub brews its own ales and the one I tried, double rota was lovely, hoppy and bitter. The kids fishfingers were described as gourmet but the were some dodgy ‘own brand’ frozen fish sticks, but the price was not over the top.

Service was fine, but food average. Hubby choose the pea and ham soup. Pretty disappointing. My trio of lamb cutlets was ok, but nothing to get excited about. Nice atmosphere, and to be fair they turned off the radio which was blaring out.

After reading the reviews on here and eating in the Screes the previous night we were expecting a good standard of food and service. There were only a few tables seated when we arrived but it felt rushed even then. Our food came too quickly to have been freshly cooked. We had to sent the steak pies back because the pastry was raw. I had to wave the server over to point this out. She apologised and brought fresh dishes which were just cooked on the top but the base was raw and slimy. No one came back to check if our food was ok. The steak was cooked just as asked but rather fatty even for sirloin. The real chips were excellent though. We waited ages for our plates to be cleared and then there was no one around when we went to pay. I appreciate it’s a busy time of year for country pubs but expect a bit better service and standard of food than we got here. We definitely wouldn’t eat here again.

arrived at 8:15 after a day of walking since 3am and famished, we called ahead at 1pm to check that we could get food and were advised walk in till 9pm so very dissapointed to be turned away even though 2 tables were clearly not in use and were previously reserved for 7pm and 7:15 respecitvely, sadly we were not allowed to use these free tables, we were happy with just some bread and cheese or a bowl of chips but were advised tuff fully booked, poor cusotmer service, we even offerred to pay double (this place is the middle of nowhere with no phone signal) fine example of a pub reliant on passing trade so they dont care about how they treat you, luckily the local B&B; that was closed! - offerred us food!

This is our second visit to the strands micro brewery/screes inn. It’s important to note when booking that these are 2...yes 2 separate locations!! They are directly opposite one another, owned by the same people apparently but they are 2 very VERY different experience’s in my experience...let me explain....we visited THE STRANDS last year, we stayed there, ate there...it was BRILLIANT..probably my favourite retreat I’d been too, great people, awesome food etc, so imagine my excitement on my 40th birthday when my brand spanking new wife told me she had booked us a minimoon break at THE STRANDS! I was chuffed!

Ate here in Wednesday after trying to book a table for Monday but they were busy. Wish I hadn't bothered. Lasagne was very dry and looked like it had been heated up in a microwave and steak didn't have much taste plus a side salad that big it took over half the plate and looked like it had been prepared days ago. Very disappointed with the whole meal.
