The Steamboat Inn in Dumfries & Galloway

The Steamboat Inn is a lovely pub with a friendly atmosphere. Great views over the sea aswell and little beach to explore before eating. Kids loved it. The pub has a lovely little children's area if you are out for a family meal with little ones and the food was great, clean plates all round. The staff were efficient, friendly and helpful. We'll definitely be back again soon.

Warm and cosy, with very friendly and welcoming staff. Log fire. Real ales OK, but nothing special. On our first visit (for dinner) the main courses were fine but they completely forgot our starters. It being the only pub in the area we (four of us) came back a couple of days later for lunch. My wife and our friends had good meals but my, otherwise excellent, seafood chowder starter was far too salty, as was the, otherwise good, steak pie. We returned the following day - again I must be unlucky, because three out of our four meals were fine (though the fish portions in the fish and chips were small) but my fish/batter had two long grey/blond hairs in it. The staff apologised and kindly offered me another meal but I declined.

We had my daughters afternoon tea hen party there, wonderful food, value for money and service. Genuinely couldn’t fault them. They went above and beyond to make it wonderful.

We have been to the steamboat in before during the summer and really enjoyed it so when back in Scotland in December we decided to call again and we weren’t disappointed we had the rib-eye steak and fish and chips and enjoyed every mouthful. Staff friendly and service was great would definitely recommend

Went for Sunday lunch with friends. We had the BLT, chicken breast, Christmas lunch and steak pie. The pie ( not a pie just a pastry top) was delicious. Food was plentiful, edible but uninspiring and clearly the chef is not very interested in vegetables. Chips were lovely but apart from them everything else was overcooked except for the peas which were just warm and very firm. Used to be packed on a Sunday so we booked but only two tables in use when we arrived but despite this service was slow. The conservatory room was freezing, shabby and uninviting. The window behind us was open at the top as there was an electric lead going out through the opening. When we put on our coats they did bring in a heater which was very kind although sadly it was very noisy and a bit smelly as well. Disappointing and won’t be back.

The Steamboat Inn is in a small hamlet however what a find. Place was spotless and all the staff were really friendly. Food was excellent the best fish and chips we have ever eaten compliments to the chef. We would also recommend the Lemon Posset. We had the dog and the Inn is very welcoming to dogs. Price is very reasonable in today's prices. We would thoroughly recommend the Steamboat Inn and hope to be back again!!

Our second visit to this lovely, old pub. It's in a beautiful location with fabulous views across the Solway, ideal for a post-lunch wander. Lunch itself was delicious, especially the seafood and Emma our server was very knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu and portion sizes so able to advise us. Cullen skink, mussels and beer battered fish were thoroughly enjoyed. Can't wait for our next visit.

Main course came out before the starters. CRAZY. Then the 3 courses we had was missing items as they didn’t have a delivery. Sauce asked to be separate and slapped over everything. Staff swearing behind counter. My son ate my desert from my 3 course as I couldn’t manage it all. Then they tried to charge for it. Disgusting staff and service Would not advise anyone to visit……

Lovely, charming coastal pub in the Sandyhills area. Thoroughly enjoying our first trip to Dumfries and Galloway, will definitely return. Onto the pub; what feels like a million ornaments, tankards, and memorabilia from the local area give this place a feeling of going for a meal in someone's front room. There was a roaring fire and friendly locals - excellent first impression. Then the food (went for the set menu, good value), tasty and came pretty quickly. The bar is well stocked and the menu choices are too much if anything. Glad to have a pared down set menu to choose from. After our meal, it was out to the sea front for a splash through the water. Would recommend this place for sure.

We are touring Scotland in a motorhome with our two dogs. We like exploring the Dumfries and Galloway coastline and came across the steamboat inn. This place is a hidden gem. Tucked away but right on the beach . They allowed us to park the Moho at the side of the pub as parking is limited. Great selection of food and drinks. The staff very friendly. We booked for dinner and had their seafood platter for 2 . Amazing . We’ll be back !!

Excellent food and even better service. The Steamboat is a go to when in Carsethorn and we’re always treated like family. The menu changes highlight what they do well and I’m always happy to support this establishment.

Have been here several times and it's usually good (not sure if new owners) but the starter of tempura chicken was most definitely not tempura batter just normal batter and greasy. The seafood chowder was tasty but very watery and the so called rib eye steak was dreadful ( looked like a cheap piece from Aldi) no offence Aldi but you know what you're getting when you're paying £5 for one not £29!! The chef then comes out to have a look to see who's complained which is very off putting. We we're given a reduction on the bill which was good and they could not apologise more. I strongly recommend they look at a local butcher to supply them so you get what you're paying for. Come on Steamboat you we're so much better than this.

I live locally and been here several times, I bring family here when they come to visit. The menu used to be more varied, since it's been taken over there's not as much choice. Today I would have loved a salad but there wasn't a salad on the menu. They used to have oysters, but again, not on the menu and there are no longer sharer starters. The price for food has also gone up £20 for a Sunday lunch, which was not a sizeable portion, and not value for money. I'm sorry to say that I won't be returning, which is a shame because I love supporting local enterprises.

Returned with friends from the highlands, after we heard it had changed hands. Staff were very professional and the atmosphere was lovely. The food however was really disappointing. The chowder was watery and salty. 3 of us ordered a Korma curry. The sauce tasted like water and curry powder. Not a creamy sauce made with almonds and coconut. The rice was the smallest portion ever presented. We went away hungry after returning our mains. Won’t be returning sadly.

We found this place by accident but what a great find! We had lovely fish and chips with a stunning view across the Solway Firth. If it had been just a tad warmer we could have sat outside as there are plenty tables outside all with the great view. Friendly staff and good value for money.

We usually go regular over the summer this was the first of the season , as a family we arrived on a Saturday evening we booked in over the phone with a young waitress , when we got they where rudely told we where early we would have to wait …we had arrived at the time of the booking never mind I thought it’s not serious . So asked if we could have a drink while waiting told abruptly no we would have to wait! Showed to the table by a gentleman who was the rudest waiter I have come across ever ,a smile and good manners costs nothing . Menu is limited -food is expensive for what you get didn’t have a dessert as couldn’t wait to leave . Shame we as a family love this pub but won’t be back til new management. Don’t often do reviews but I most certainly made sure I made this one .

The outside of this pub doesn’t give any clue as to the warm welcome as you open the door! Great service, friendly and efficient staff. A real treat and deli out menu. Thank you.

What an experience! Firstly yesterday the place is a bit run down looking, don’t expect the Ritz here. However the food was extremely good. The seafood chowder was absolute perfection 11/10. Mains extremely well prepared and cooked (I think a little splash of cream in the peppercorn sauce before serving would have mellowed it a bit as it was strong) but all lovely plates of food. Husband was full but I decided to fit a dessert in and it too was excellent. Each serving was an acceptable size, not too small or too big, spot on. I knocked a point off as I do think they need to ensure the tables get a good wiping down before next customers and it could do with some renovating but this is still some of the best food we have had in ages and memorable which is what any business needs.

A great meal! Probably the best seafood chowder ever. All the other food was excellent too. Very impressed and will return. The vista is spectacular, and they have an amazing sit out area

Had a wonderful meal here yesterday, popped in on the off chance there was a table after our walk along the beach. The staff done their upmost to accommodate us and found a table within a few minutes. The food was excellent, and service was quick. A great experience. Thank you.

Fantastic pub and restaurant. We have been coming to this area for years and this is the first time we have eaten at the steamboat. It was so good that we went twice! Staff great, so helpful, attentive and welcoming. Food was 5 star. Produce used in dishes was of such a high quality and cooked to perfection. Accompaniments all spot on and veg delicious. Way way above the standard of any restaurant in the area and excellent in every way. We will definitely be back!

Booked for Sunday lunch recently. Service was fast and food arrived quickly, it was hot and tasty and ample for our needs. Thought the price was a bit excessive for what it was at £19.95, for that we expected all homemade and not frozen Yorkshire puddings. Probably give it a miss now for a while to see if they can price their menu in accordance with the quality of their food.

Fantastic lunch for all of us. Couldn't of asked for any better. Two of us had two courses and the other two had three course. Food was cooked to perfection and would rate it 11stars. Will definitely be back and will also recommend to anyone.

Saw this on TA, so made the trip down and glad we did. Friday at 1pm and already a few tables taken and then a steady flow while we ate. Food was excellent both in quality and portion size. I had the chowder, and unlike previous versions I have tried it was fresh, creamy and just a hint of salt. Fish and chip and then a homemade cheesecake saw us off. Staff really friendly and took time to chat and have a bit of banter. We will be back, but guess next time we will book in advance to save being disappointed, just in case.

I have been to the Steamboat many times but this visit was very good the service was attentive and the food excellent we had the mussels,garlic prawns,calamari and mushroom starters then for main had Red snapper,Chicken with pepper sauce,Scampi and Sole mornay all good and well presented.

Went last night with my partner and our dog. I went for the chicken tempura to start then the pan fried red snapper and then lemon cheese cake for desert. All 3 courses were 10/10. We'll definitely be back!

What a find we are holidaying in southerness and came across this delightful pub right on the waters edge. A family of 5 two adults 3 children quickly seated and a fab choice of food the meal portions were huge and lovely freshly cooked food all homemade. Dont order a Steak! Visited here with my family for a birthday meal and was somewhat unimpressed, I had ordered the Sirloin Steak as a Medium/Well, came out absolutely over well done, dry, thin, could have cooked better at home myself and at £25 I certainly expected more. I said to the waitress about it who just replied "okay" , later she had said to the chef - who done nothing about it, didn't discount the bill or bring me a proper Steak.
