Loved it here. We were staying just down the road and popped in on Saturday evening. The welcoming staff were very friendly, they managed to give us a table where we could sit with our very large dog. Food was “proper” no frills pub food. The prices were very reasonable. It was very busy with people eating and had a lovely atmosphere.

Popped in here the other day with mum for a light lunch. Was greeted and served swiftly, The menus looked impressive so we ordered. Food came out quickly, but it wasn't amazing! The presentation looked fantastic but due to both being hungry, we ate it and didn't see much reason to make a fuss. Food was a let down to an otherwise lovely place

Visited bank holiday monday. The pub was very busy and was told hour and a half wait for food which wasn't a problem. We had a drink whilst waiting food was good and to be honest quick waiting about half an hour. The lady at the bar tall lady with brown hair served me quick and was polite and the little boy who brought our food out was delightful and so polite. I all in all good experience we will visit again. Very well done to the staff (review from the nice lady lol the lady who served me said I was so thanks)

We wanted to try this pub as we get our free range meat from the nearby Ty Poeth farm, which also supplies the pub. It was very busy, with a good atmosphere, despite being out of town and off the main road. The 'cwtch' dining area was quiter, and we had a nice chat with the couple on the next table. We had gammon steaks, good sized portions with egg and pineapple and delicious. The desserts were also very nice, and reasonably priced, and service was friendly. Hope to go back soon.

Mooring a short walk from the pub is easy. Just turn your boat after Bridge 63 (if you're coming from Goytre) and then tie up. The pub's food is straightforward and hearty, and the beers good, including Butty Bach when we were there. The best bit is the atmosphere - very friendly - and they also welcome dogs. We were there on a Sunday and the roast with mixed veg was enjoyed. Should one ever mention pub toilets? Well take a look and make your own mind up (apperently the Ladies is very like the Gents in that respect!)

We love it here, it’s very rustic, old fashioned, with a log burner. Staff are polite, friendly and work very hard. It’s not a chain. It does not serve food all day long- and it shows because the food you get is fresh and homemade and very reasonably priced. They have a website which lets you know the serving times. It can get busy as it’s popular. Food is very good, love the chickpea curry, the roasts are plentiful and delicious, all come with Yorkshire pudding and plenty of veggies. The basket meals come with homemade chips. The only disappointment we’ve had is when we’ve popped in after a long walk on the canal and they’ve been fully booked. We’ve never had a bad meal here and we’ve been coming for years. We’ve found the locals very friendly and they’ve even offered to move for us and give up their tables. The toilets and interior are clean and tidy. Can’t fault it!

We visited The Star for an impromptu lunch and received the most warm welcome from two lovely attentive waitresses. The choice of drinks was excellent. We ordered food from a menu which had plenty of choice. Our meals were outstanding, excellent quality, hot and plentiful. My dessert of homemade sticky toffee pudding and custard was one of the best I’ve had and to finish, the coffee made with hot milk was made to perfection. The service and food will knock spots off many restaurants I have visited. We will definitely be back very soon! Thank you and well done on running such a quaint and authentic pub.

Unlike some establishments that push the marketing so much that they make themselves out to be something they are not, The Star Inn proudly upholds the qualities of a good honest country pub without all the bravado. Lovely ciders and lagers and home comfort foods that leave you feeling satisfied. The manager and staff are friendly and take great pride in their food and service. The chef has an excellent relationship to flavor and the dishes I have had there have always been delicious and just right. I also value a pub that supports local businesses as this one certainly does, sourcing its meat from a nearby producer. You can really taste the difference. Need I say more.

There are a reasonable variety of dishes with vegetarian options available. Due to the very small kitchen, a slight wait is sometimes necessary but always worth-while and the time can be well spent sampling the good cask beers available.Booking is advisable as it is very popular with locals and visitors alike. We took an unplanned detour on a glorious day to visit this pub. Admittedly, the sign says food until 2, but given we were just a few minutes after and only wanted a couple of baguettes, I was unimpressed to be told blankly "we stop food at 2". When I pointed out that it was Easter Saturday, it was only just after 2 and we only wanted a couple of baguettes, I was met with a dismissive shrug. No apology, no empathy, let alone a " let me see what we can do".

Late arrivals, the friendly staff allowed us to order. I only wanted a snack so I had a ploughman's. It was awful! Why o why when we have such amazing bread in Wales do pubs insist on serving frozen undercooked plastic baguette. Ham and cheese were good. Tomato rock hard, horrible pickled onions and a full apple, which is a cute idea, but as we had knives that would have had a job cutting anything. Was it just a bad day in the kitchen or has the Star gone downhill?

As the title states this was a first (and most definitely last) visit to this pub and it wasn't a pleasant experience. After enjoying a few days of exploring the canal we always finish with a lovely cold lager in a charming welsh pub. We have found some absolute gems ( The Goose and Cuckoo, The Horseshoe Inn) and decided to try the Star Inn as its signposted all around stating good friendly pub. That is false advertising. Upon entry to the bar we were not acknowledged at all by any staff, disgruntled locals looking annoyed as we had momentarily hindered their view of the telly (football on) and then a wait of eternity at the bar. The two bar staff could have said 'sorry we're a little busy, we'll be with you in a minute' but chose to completely ignore paying customers. They then served a local who came in after us so we left without getting a drink. Complete shoddy service! We went to The Horseshoe Inn which was a wonderful experience, great bar staff, lovely location and views and super service.

On entering the pub there was a queue of approximately six people waiting to be served for drinks and food by a totally overworked barmaid who appeared under great stress. Piping hot and freshly cooked waiting about 25 mins on a very busy afternoon just before Christmas. Few pints of their excellent Czech beer staropramen and went home satisfied! The above with a few coffee's was reasonably priced. The place is dog friendly so you can take well behaved dogs in, popular with cyclists too with stands to secure bikes on. We waited near on an hour for our food to arrive which was far too long no apology but finally arrived. Food wasn't great veg selection was fine but meat was very fatty and not wonderful quality. Also when you advertise lamb and mint sauce serve it don't wait to be asked and return with a sachet. Lunch is what it is and was reasonable and tasted like a school dinner which I didn't mind as liked school dinners. This is obviously a pub that thrives on passing trade from canal I would concentrate on Sundays on reducing menu to Sunday roast only and get it bang on .

Came back to the pub, and went inside with the dog (yes, they are dog friendly, which is awesome!) and had a pint and ordered a meal, which I sat outside for. Whilst waiting for the meal to be served the barmaid brought some biscuits out for my dog, and was told I could go in anytime and help myself to them as there was a large jar on the bar. The meal itself was excellent (vegetarian) as was the pint of real ale I ordered too. Nice to see a pub selling real ale and not just the fizzy kack that passes for beer these days! All in all an excellent experience and I would thoroughly recommend as a stopping off point, to anyone walking the canal between Pontypool & Abergavenny.

We rang prior to arrival to visit the Star Inn for tea and were told that there was a table but we would have to hurry. Arrived, and were told to hurry up and order food. It seemed like the staff were friendly with the locals but not interested in newcomers, they hardly even spoke to us. Ordered food, was overcharged on one of the bills. Food was lovely, couldn't fault it. Got told to keep the dogs under the table as they were "busy", despite it being a "dog friendly" pub. Shortly after we had finished our food, one of the staff came over to our table and started taking our plates away (didn't even ask if everything was good, didn't say a word to us). Then tried to take away a wine glass that still had drink in. Asked if we were finished, as soon as we said yes the reserved sign was slammed back down on the table. Good food but wouldn't go there again as the service was terrible, the service to guests shouldn't suffer just because they are busy.

This place is in a beautiful location but that is where it ends, inside it is very clicky, local regular guys think they own it and can barely make room to get served, outside tables are all in extremely close qtrs on a patch of grass, muddy, dirty, further up there is a larger patch of grass with a couple of tables and an enclosure with chickens, but people tend to let kids either kick footballs or chase and tease the hens, it is not peaceful enough to sit and relax due to this behaviour

Had a Sunday roast - best pub roast we'd ever eaten.Went again on the night before we left for home, had superb food and again, very friendly welcoming staff. This pub is highly recommended. Would advise booking in advance as it is extremely popular.

Visited for Sunday lunch on Mothers Day. Place was full to the rafters. A warm sunny day the beer garden was also very busy. The staff are friendly but it was so busy it was chaotic and the service was really slow. Tables around us were forgotten and we waited over 15 mins for our order to be taken and almost 50 mins for our food to arrive. They were apologetic and the food itself was good. I think the problem was it was unusually busy as well as Sunday lunch they were also serving meals from the main menu which was slowing the kitchen down and complicating things. Its got great parking facilities, a childrens play area outside and a good location if you are on the canal. The surroundings are also very pretty. I will go back to give it a second chance as the food was good but will give Sunday a miss and try out a lunchtime instead. I must say though the staff were aware of the problems and kept apologising and a nice touch was all the ladies were given chocolates and a plant for mothers day.

Called here for lunch on Thursday 27th April whilst on a canal holiday with my wife, son and his girlfriend. The pub is a very short walk from the canal.Three of us went for the rump steak - it was really tender. My son's girlfriend went for the chilli. We all succumbed to scrumptious deserts! We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals.Well worth a visit!

3 generations needing Sunday lunch. Booked the Star, Mamihlad. Pontypool, fabulous choice. On offer on the Sunday menu Beef, Lamb and Chicken with fresh vegetables and Yorkshire puds. The beef was tender with some hot horseradish sauce, the lamb and chicken was enjoyed by family members. Pudding well it's Sunday lunch you just have to indulge don't you and here your not let down. Pear and caramel cheesecake melted, apple pie with creamy custard delicious not forgetting the gooseberry and toffee tart and chocolate ice cream cake gorgeous. This is a real ale pub mentioned in CAMRA 's best pub guide and deserve ably so. The staff not forgotten in this review friendly efficient and welcoming, special thanks go to Felix, Shannon and Adam marvellous service. This rates a 10 out of 10 experience. Don't all book at once as we will be returning soon.

We have eaten twice at the Star Inn over the last month - an evening meal and a Sunday Lunch. On both occasions the pub was busy and had a great atmosphere with people of all ages. The Star Inn is a traditional country pub a million miles away from the bland soul less chains that dominate towns and cities. The staff are friendly and the beer is excellent. The pint of Butty Bach from the Wye Valley Brewery was obviously well kept and worth the trip in itself. The food is very good although I would rate the evening meal we had to be better than the Sunday lunch. The Sunday lunch (we had lamb and beef) was very nice with plentiful freshly cooked veg. The meat was good but not exceptional but for the reasonable price we couldn't expect much better. Minor niggles would be the bland gravy (needed a bit of seasoning) and a pot of mint sauce that was mainly vinegar with little mint. The evening meal food was much better in our opinion- we chose the the steak and ale pie which was really tasty as was the tagine. A nice choice of desserts too so don't bother with calorie counting here. Other tables food looked equally good and it was difficult to choose from such an enticing menu. We'll just have to go back to try some more. One last point to note is that the pub is genuinely dog friendly. Wish this was my local.

After an energetic walk we were ready for a hot meal and a drink. My husband had the mediterranean roasted veg pie with feta cheese, I had the lamb and redcurrant pie. Both were delicious, well prepared and presented. The portions were generous. The staff were friendly and attentive. This is a true country pub with an open fire, warm welcome and even your dog after a long tiring walk plus you might see the odd horse tethered outside.

Superb little find during our visit to Pontypool. Wonderful attentive service, everyone so, so friendly and a real quality Sunday roast. Beautiful soup! And brilliant value for the three courses plus beer and wine. Loved it.
