The Stags Head Inn in North Devon

Another lovely relaxing lunch at the Stag's Head, Filleigh, for our birthdays. Great choices on the menu and the food came out well presented and piping hot. Staff were all friendly and professional and made us feel welcome. The pub was warm and beautifully decorated for Christmas, even the windows were sparkly clean. Always enjoy our visits.

We booked a table of four, with visitors from London and Australia and we all delighted in our meals! Me and my partner had pork dishes mine with belly pork was utterly amazing and one had the half (more like a whole duck!). And other the pie (venison?) which he said was delicious and rich. We all had a wonderful meal and service was good too! Haven’t visited for a while but will definitely be going back soon

Went for a family birthday, was pre booked, 7 of us in total. On arrival the place smelled very damp and mouldy. There was a group in front of us who were welcomed and shown to their table while we were completely ignored and had to go up to the bar to get any attention. We were pointed to our table, not shown and we noticed immediately that the table was very sticky and had obviously not been cleaned properly from the previous service. The staff seemed quite impatient to take our order, however, they had only given us 2 menus between 7 of us and the menus themselves were very grubby and on nasty clipboards. The whole place just didn't feel or smell very clean or welcoming. The food was very underwhelming, it came across as all having been frozen and portion sizes seemed to vary quite a bit. To be safe one of us had a steak and even this was bad with lots of grissle and a watery peppercorn sauce, no evidence of any seasoning on the steak at all. A "Mediterranean" fish dish had no flavour at all, it was like ketchup and very rubbery over cooked fish with, again, absolutely no seasoning at all. Lasagnas were bland and obviously frozen. The worst part is the next day 5 out of 7 of us were feeling unwell. 3 of us had food intolerances which we made them aware of, these may not have been paid attention to or it was just a case of mild food poisoning for everyone. Either way I will never eat there again. It was also not good value for money, the prices where more like London prices and I would expect a lot better than what was delivered for that price.

Main meal was OK but not piping hot 2 people on table had the same but one of them had very small portion of chips compared to the other, very small portion of cream on dessert was not worth putting it on crumble was undercooked very poor for the price was asked if we wanted coffee, this was brought to the table before the dessert the waitress seemed like they wanted us to hurry up so that they could leave would not go there again

We visited for Sunday lunch today. Firstly, the staff were very friendly and considerate. We were delayed in arriving by some time due to flooding, but this was not a problem when we did get there. The food was excellent! I chose the large version of the roast beef, and it was true to the word - huge, in fact. There was no compromise on the quality though, and very good value compared to a lot of other eateries (mentioning no names!) My partner was also very pleased with her fish, so the pub have two new fans, for sure. Highly recommend this place and we will certainly come back again and again if this first occasion is anything to go by.

We visited for Sunday lunch today from Exeter with our friend from South Molton, the Roast Dinner was absolutely lovely and a very good price. When we visit our friend we always come to the Stags for lunch and have never been disappointed. See you again soon.

Very friendly staff, prompt efficient service, food was slightly disappointing, but I’m not going to let that deter me from going back and trying something else.

We were a group of 6 friends visiting this wonderful pub in North Devon. Everything was perfect from the hosts and the cheerful and friendly staff to the superb food. My personal favourite was the pork tenderloin in a Stilton sauce served with scalloped potatoes and fresh vegetables - just to die for. There was a delicious selection of puddings too. I think I can safely say that we can’t wait for the next visit.

Large group of us went for lunch, so hiccups were expected but there were none. Service was slick and organised without the national cry of 'sorry we're short staffed' I had crumbed brie wedges to start, followed by pork loin in a Stilton sauce, finishing with bread and butter pudding and custard. All cooked to perfection and super yummy. As I looked around the room i noticed many clean plates going back to the kitchen at the end if the meal.😁 Ample parking, wheelchair accessible, clean toilets. Woukd definitely recommend and will visit again

One of the most varied menus locally that isn't the "run of the mill" choices that their local competitors offer. I would thoroughly recommend the Half duck or Venison Haunch to name just a couple, so many others to suggest. Great service from the staff always friendly and efficient. Such an atmospheric pub in a quiet part of North Devon. If you're in the area try it but be sure to book first.

Visited last weekend- the food and service were both poor. All the meals were served with cheap deep fried cubed potatoes (whether you like it or not) the mains were hit and miss, the poor tenderloin was tough but the pork duo was ok. The reason for the 1 star is the building/environment. The minute you walk in the smell damp hits you. It’s overwhelming and so off putting. Staff are very curt and snappy. Wasn’t a good experience and would not return. I cannot see how the reviews are real for this place, something is off.

I have had this review taken down on trip advisor. So I’ve come to Google: The food was average, every plate came out with cubed frozen potatoes. No veg or garnish, just beige. So for £18 on average per dish, that is pretty hefty. Service wasn’t great, slightly rude. As soon as you walk in, there’s an overwhelming smell of damp/musk. I feel this is a relevant statement to make, as when you’re eating it makes it unenjoyable. I understand it’s an old building, but no other pub of similar age or building type (thatch) has ever been as pungent as The Stags at Filiegh. The toilet was full of air fresheners, so they know they’re “trying” to hide the smell of something... It’s also highly suspicious, to take down a legitimate review from a customer who had that experience. We paid the bill, but this is the feed back we’ve given. What’s the point of having a review platform, if you (the business owner) take down the one you don’t like? Experiences are subjective to each person.

As ever a delicious home-cooked meal with a lovely dessert to follow. I had roast Turkey with all the trimmings (never too early), followed by a home-made Lemon and Ginger cheesecake. My mum settled for a steak and red wine pie, which she said was really nice as well; ate the whole lot (and she she doesn't have the largest of appetites) Friendly, efficient service with a very generously apportioned meal to boot!

Had a lovely meal with my family last night, was a lovely atmosphere, was very busy and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Really loved the food, will definitely be back !!

I met sue and john vary luckily thrue a friend in work as i was sleeping in the car to go to work out of the kindness of there heart looked after me and got me accommodation. But what i did not expect how talented Sue is in the kitchen and john comes for a chat at the end of the evening. And there wonderful staff every single one of them a smile and a chat to make ur evening more pleasant and oh my if you havent yet then try there sunday lunch 😳😳❤️‍🔥 ive never had anything better 11/10 thanks again for everything vary lucky to meet new friends in the stags head inn

Only visited this cute country pub for lunch with the family, food and service was good, cannot rate the rooms as we did not stay.

This place is phenomenal! About a month ago, my boyfriend and I were visiting from California and a friend of mine (who lives locally) took us to this place. I was blown away with absolutely everything. And I LOVED that for a lot of the dishes we could order half portions (so then we got to try more dishes). While everything was seriously amazing, stand outs for me were the venison and the mussels... especially the mussels, wow. I'm actually a little worried I will never have mussels that good ever again, as this place is a little far to go on the regular for me lol. If you live close by or are in the area, I 100% recommend you go here. Sue and her team are amazing. I have no doubt they will make you feel welcome and give you top service and food.

Very friendly owners, for whom nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend a visit, or if available a stay overnight.

My wife and I had two meals here. Saturday evening and Sunday lunch. Saturday I had the Pork combo, melt in the mouth pork and a selection of vegetables. Delicious! My wife had the Mediterranean fish stew. A bowl overflowing with delicious mussels, monkfish prawns. Sunday we had a traditional Sunday Lunch, again a delicious meal. The staff were courteous, friendly and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble. This Pub restaurant is truly a gem. I heartily recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

Arrival was unwelcoming Food was lukewarm. Main meal, everthing including the vegetables were already on the plate, so customer doesn't have a choice of what they want. Gravy very strong which was also on the plate and to much of it. Any queries were dealt with the staff very abruptly to the point of rude, throughout. Definitely would not recommend. Expensive experience

The meal we had was delicious, it really made our Anniversary meal extra special.

You could tell she was in a bad mood the moment we walked in there. She had no customer service skills at all. And she wasn't like that with us, we noticed her being short and snappy with every customer, she topped it off when we paid our bill when she couldn't even be bothered to thank you for our custom. The food was only average which was disappointing as everyone had told us the food was amazing but it looked like the mushrooms had come out the freezer along with the sautee potatoes. Highly disappointed and would definitely not recommend. After paying a £60 bill it would have been nice to get a thank you for our custom …. As per your reply if your staff looked approachable I would have. Tbh you don’t seem to take criticism well as I have read other reviews about your staff being rude and obviously you haven’t tackled the problem. I can only imagine most of the reviews are people you know. We didn’t even get a thank you or asked how the meal was - maybe I would have told you it wa snot great but we couldn’t wait to get out of there

Just had dinner. Not only were the staff attentive and very friendly, but the menu had a large range of options. I had the duck and the Banoffee Pie, both were delicious! The Ale the staff recommended was local and tasty! The place filled up incredibly fast. I'd 5/5 recommend this place! Perfect for date night!

I bought some vouchers to be sent to my parents in Combe Martin, they arrived promptly with no bother even though I'm overseas. They had a great evening, fantastic food and atmosphere ,beautiful venue and property, most of all they were absolutely over the moon with the staff. 'It's the best place they have been to in a long time', was mentioned. Thanks all at The Stags Head for making the process easy and the evening outstanding.

I had the best roast ever! My roast beef meal arrived and it was delicious. You could tell everything was fresh and homemade. Even the gravy was full of flavour. Vegetables were cooked perfectly and the roast potatoes were amazing. Well worth a visit.

Very tasty food. Portions were very good, left with a full stomach and lovely roast flavours. I am not vegetarian, but a more alternative veggie menu would be ideal as some veggies get sick of salmon and nut roast is not for everyone. But otherwise, great.

Lovely Sunday lunch, family of 5 enjoyed the roasts and desserts. Roast lamb and roast pork, excellent, tasted so nice , plenty of food on the plate. For dessert, the bread and butter pudding was so good, served with clotted cream, no awful squirty cream here 👌 can also recommend the cheesecake, the brownie and the crème brulé. Good service, great old pub Definitely worth a visit.

This is a good local pub. The food is nice, the staff are very friendly, polite whilst being professional. Liam was our main server and he was very pleasant and attentive.

We popped into here on the off chance, during a Wednesday lunchtime in February. There's plenty of free parking available on site, and the staff are friendly and welcoming, providing a good service. We had 2 drinks, a prawn baguette, and a smoked salmon starter, which was £25. The food was plentiful and delicious. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on short leads in the bar area only. We hadn't booked a table, but there were a few people eating, so I would imagine that it does get busy. It was a great place to visit.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL PUB VERY QUIET AND STAFF FRIENDLY

Poor service bar staff were in experiebced, fingers around pint glass whilst pouring. Basic food not much taste or imagination, empty glasses were left on our table all evening, and when asked for sauce to accompany dry steak it was completely forgotten untill we asked again. Would not eat here again.

We popped in for lunch. It was a little quiet but it was a Tuesday. We had the lasagne and it was full of meat and it was so rich. Lovely chunky chips, Just beautiful. Clearly homemade as it was all so tasty. We also had puddings and were not disappointed! Staff friendly and attentive. Prompt with clearing plates. We will be back!

Nice thatched country pub with outdoor seating next to a large pond. Set on a few levels with the bar and restaurant joined by steps. The welcome was friendly enough, the prices weren't, £5.10 for a below average local bitter. I don't think we'll be returning 😕

We stumbled across this pub restaurant due to a roadworks diversion, and were so pleased with the quality of the meal we enjoyed on Friday 10th November. The menu was great, the food was lovely and staff were friendly. You seem to have got everything right, even down to the hot plates! We shall be visiting you again when we are down that way from time-to-time.

Excellent venue and food. One of my favourite venues in North Devon. The food is wonderful but as with many restaurants the prices are creeping up. In my original review now updated here, I raised an issue with the gents toilet. Sue Prior (the proprietor) thanked me for raising the issue and assured me that the matter had been addressed. It has. The gents now clean and well presented. I believe this indicates to me the caring that your host has for her clientele. 5 stars for the Stags Head from me, try it and see if you agree.

We visited the Stags Head Inn with a group of friends. The staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. Two of our group ordered Sue’s amazing fish stew and had scallops to start followed by an excellent cheese board. The pork tenderloin in a Stilton sauce and the pork combo were both delicious. We can’t praise this restaurant enough. Sue is a wonderful chef and the Stags Head is a beautiful building in lovely surroundings.

We were visiting with friends who know The Stag Inn so decided to eat here on a busy Saturday evening. The menu offered plenty of choice. Everything freshly cooked to order. I enjoyed the delicious Fish Bake followed by the world’s best meringues that were perfectly soft and chewy in the middle. 10/10. As we were there for a few days, we went back for Sunday roast. Again an excellent meal. Clearly a popular destination for Sunday lunch as the place was very busy again. A very welcoming proper pub offering proper food. I recommend!

We live in South Molton and even though we had not been for some time, booked for an evening meal on Saturday. We were given a time of 7.15...when we arrived all the tables were occupied (pub opened at 7p.m) Between ordering and receiving our meals it was obvious that they were overbooked! Everyone seemed to be waiting for their meals & the young servers were almost running to get food out together with lots of apologies! (They were doing their best) To cut a long story short we were served our meals at 8.45!!! And then to cap it all one of our steaks was tough and not acceptable. We were offered a free sweet or a bottle of wine but were so disappointed we did not except...at least they only charged for 3 meals. Overall a very poor outing indeed. Other customers were mostly local and like ourselves will not be returning....

We decided to stop off here on our journey from North Devon to Wiltshire - we wanted a proper meal rather than a sandwich or service station offering. I looked it out from Tripadvisor maps, whilst in the car, and rang to book en route. It was a wee detour from the main road, but it was worth it. We all really enjoyed our main courses - clean plates all round. Sadly we needed to keep going so couldn't linger over a pudding.

Avoid at all costs. Whilst enjoining a well deserved family stay after months of being extremely unwell we decided to give this place a visit as from th outside it looks warm and cosy but as soon as we stepped in we were welcomed with a frosty atmosphere, the older lady with short blonde hair is so rude she shouldn’t work with the public she made us feel ao uncomfortable. We bought drinks and literally 6 minutes later were told we had to ‘sit outside’ as the pub was shutting, we was not made aware of this, not to mention it was torrential rain outside with no shelter. Im sad as in covid these places where desperate begging the government for support and now there turning away paying customers.

This hidden Gem is the type of pub you would love to discover, just off the main road through Filleigh North Devon. We were welcomed by smiling staff , and chose from a surprisingly long list of home cooked dishes. Three of us chose omelettes which were simply the best ever. We rounded off the meal with the selection of deserts ,puddings and ice creams.. The staff make everyone , including our Dachshund , feel welcome, if you are in the area this is definitely not to be missed.

This is an excellent pub, hidden away the food is excellent and really nicely presented, it was so hard to choose what to have from the lovely menu on our last evening. The pub has a very warm welcoming atmosphere and the staff were all friendly and helpful. We wish we lived nearer as we would be frequent customers. We booked a table before our holiday and it is advisable as it was busy every evening that we went.

Beautiful traditional family owned pub. Very rare these days. Lovely friendly staff. Wonderful with dogs. Good size portions. Go if you get the chance.

A lively evening at the Stags Head. Even though we were a party of 9 there was no requirement to preselect food and all our various starters and later mains arrived at the table within seconds of each other so no waiting around before we tucked in to the delicious food. No long wait between courses either . The staff were excellent all round and we had a really lovely evening. Cannot recommend highly enough

Lovely looking pub so as passing called in for lunch. Person serving behind bar was business like and cold. Standard ham, egg and chips but the ham was very watery, I expect it had been frozen beforehand.

We visited The Stags Head on a Sunday and had a delicious Roast. The Carvery was amazing, with lots of choice. The girl cut huge pieces of meat for us (a little too big for some). The view is outstanding. Certainly recommend.
