This place was closed until mid July as it is undergoing renovation. Shame they did not update google as we made quite a diversion down single track roads to get there.

The best roast I've ever had in a restaurant. The Stag Inn is a beautifully refurbished dinning room and bar. Be sure to check out the original well still visible through the floor by the bar.

Tasty food but small portions for the price charged. (£15.00 for a small oval dish of cottage pie and a small ramekin of peas). The starter of Mackerel patè for £6.50 was literally just that, 3 quinelles of patè and a smidgen of chopped spring onion and a sprig of pea shoot garnish, nothing else. Our booking had been forgotten which was made 2 weeks earlier but it didn't cause a problem. We were put on the end of a long table though which was a bit disappointing for a meal out as a couple and no candle on our table unlike all the others. We were offered water for the table which sadly never arrived. So all in all, a nice meal, freshly cooked with a friendly waiter, but short on finishing touches, light on quantity and a bit lacking in the personal touch. I would have scored 3.5 if halves were possible but I didn't rate it as a 4

Very good quality food (local Rackenford lamb) and exceptional English puddings on the evening of our visit. Home-made vanilla ice cream, sticky toffee pudding with spiced Cornish rum, lemon posset and Eton Mess. Divine. Generous and charming service. Good value for this quality £134 for 5 main courses and puddings and drinks.

Called in late Saturday afternoon on our way to Bideford from Weston Super Mare. I had left straight from work and desperately needed some food. Although we missed lunchtime the proprietor said they could make something for us. Lovely food. Fabulous atmosphere. This Inn has great character and has been tastefully restored back to its originally features. Well worth a visit. We shall certainly pay another visit. Oh and they had two beautiful and friendly spaniels Freddie and Ben.

Beautifully renovated, very old pub, full of character. The beer was consistently good, as was the house wine, but the star of the show here is the food which is quite simply STUNNING! The Stag lives up to its billing of a gastro-pub and then some! Top end food, course after course, we ate 3 courses on 2 separate occasions and genuinely can not fault any of it. From the home made bread through such beauties as Thai fishcakes and Chicken tarragon to the home made ice cream, every dish was a flavour explosion! I've paid a lot more for a lot worse. The guys are running to an exceptional standard. Get in while you can as I can only see this place getting harder to book!

We love The Stag - beautifully restored 12C pub/restaurant; Steve and Oliver are perfect 'Mine Hosts'; and Scott Lancelles' menus are absolutely delicious - and beautifully presented too! We've eaten there three times now and are very much looking forward to taking some special friends next week. Highlights for us were Scott's Eggs, with runny yolks and black pudding surrounds; the rack of lamb and the Sunday Roasts were wondrous and the puds are all divine - can't wait to try the white chocolate fudge with chocolate soil and coffee on Wednesday. Definitely worth searching it out just off the A 361 - it's a real find!

As a local we are really pleased to see The Stag open again . We went in last night for our second meal in the two weeks that the owners have been serving food . Steve and Oliver have put in so much hard work to get the pub looking stunning .They have found an amazing Chef in Scott . We couldn’t fault the food on both occasions. It was well presented and absolutely delicious. The extra touches of homemade beer bread with your meal and white chocolate fudge with chocolate soil with your coffee are delicious. Well done to you both and we will look forward to many more meals at The Stag.

What a gem of a place ( rather well hidden off the A361). Authentic, honest and stunning renovation of this ancient inn which we are told dates back as far as the 13th century. An old english pub built in the 1100's for the stone masons while they built the village church. Lots of nooks & crannies & no straight wall in the place. Friendly bar staff, reasonable beer garden. Nice menu with well cooked & presented food. I think we were just leaving as the entertainment (regulars) came in. Cobbled entrance tunnel.

What a fantastic, quirky but traditional old coaching Inn. Full of character, ideally situated. Read what's on the packet, if you accept that you will not be disappointed. Be patient, food is excellent but prepared to order so expect a relaxing quality meal which is not to be rushed. A little gem which we are glad we have found.
