Made very welcome. Great atmosphere. Love the dogs, so friendly. Lovely staff and lovely food. We had the sharing fish platter for 2 with chips. Served so nicely, very tasty and best chips I have had in months. A really nice relaxing pub to eat. Thank you

Whilst checking out new development in the area we called into The Stag for lunch. The welcome was very warm, there was a good selection of beers and the menu was extensive and varied. Our order was taken quickly and our lunches were freshly prepared, well presented and the food was excellent. The pub is in a lovely country setting with front outside seating and ample parking. We would certainly return if in the area and would recommend. The only downside, a 10% added service charge which I haven't seen before in a pub restaurant; I always leave a tip but prefer it to be left to my discretion.

We visited the stag on a rainy Sunday afternoon seeking warmth, comfort food, peace, and a full tummy!!! We got ALL. Thoroughly enjoyed this gem of a pub, nestled in the countryside. The friendliest of landlords was so welcoming, the Sunday Roast was DELICIOUS and piping hot. The homemade rhubarb crumble was to die for . Service excellent. Thank you The Stag , for a wonderful Sunday

Having over many years seen this pub morph, under quite a few different landlords, from a simple but happy and thriving village drinking and card and darts playing local pit-stop into its' present outwardly and inwardly ship-shape condition, we decided to take another trip down memory lane and give it another go to see what was on offer. Initially, it was a great relief to note an alternative to the also on draft Greene Kings' dreaded IPA, otherwise our visit might have been cut prematurely short! The pint of Timothy Taylor's did not disappoint. Reception was very friendly and a nice atmosphere prevailed inside and out of the very smartly refurbed establishment. It is perhaps not fair to over-criticise the limited catering and accompanying service offered at this stage, as one hopes that both will develop over the coming weeks and months. After all, the pub now has very adequate parking and outside seating facilities and it would be a shame not to try to exploit them, especially as there is some very serious competition not much more than a stones' throw away from this very pleasant spot.

We stayed in the campsite at the Stag to meet friends for dinner who live locally. We were made to feel so welcome throughout our stay, by the landlord and regulars. Dinner with our friends was very tasty, especially the home-made desserts. All in all, this is a lovely, friendly pub, and its campsite was a convenient extra for us.

We wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the only pub within walking distance of our accommodation was having a pizza night. Neither of us are great pizza lovers but we gave it a go! What a great pizza it was! Didn’t see a menu. The chef came out and asked what we wanted and prepared each pizza from scratch. I chose a bbq chicken and my husband had a meat feast with exactly the requested level of spice. Pizzas arrived quickly and were piping hot and absolutely delicious! We both agreed that it was the best pizzas we had eaten! At £10 each they were excellent value! Great little pub in this really interesting Essex village. Well worth a visit!

Our family popped in for a Sunday lunch... we were bitterly disappointed. On entering one couldn't help but notice an old peoples home smell... kust awful. The decor is dated. Food...The red cabbage tasted of vinegar, the cauliflower cheese looked and tasted like it had a melted Kraft sandwich slice on it (we asked and were told that it was Red Leicester which we can't prove one way or another but it tasted artificial), the veggie nut roast tasted like a bad frozen option,... the gravy was decent however. The staff seemed pleasant enough. We will not be returning which is a shame as we are so local.

You know how it is, it’s 2:30 in the afternoon, it’s a warm sunny autumn Sunday afternoon and the pubs open. So you pop in for a quick one. The staff are friendly and so are the locals. But there is a problem... the food smells wonderful. You try to put off an impulse purchase by asking if they take cards! They do, “you don’t have space for two more in your restaurant?” They do... and that’s how it starts.. food, service and price all fabulous. Well done - we will be back.

Do NOT miss out on going to The Stag if your in or Around Dunmow. Glen, Carolyn, and Abbi make you feel right at home from the second you walk through the door. If your real nice Abbi might even get up and sing you a song while Glen kills the keyboard. Tasty food, cold beers and cider (we recommend the “snake bite”) My mate and I have had the pleasure of living down the road for the past month and stopped by several times during our stay. Great for all gatherings, bring the family, brings the kids, or just go for casual drink and game of pool with the guys. The stag will forever have a near and dear place in our hearts. Thank you for the all good times.-Breath easy my friends, C&C

We have been to this pub now twice for Sunday Lunch. The first visit was on the off chance they could fit us in at the end of the day - and we were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was - so thought we would definitely return....The second time (yesterday) we booked for an early lunch - Couldn't have been more disappointed. The vegetables were just not enough for 2 people - there wasn't even a whole carrot as it was sliced thinly, same with the parsnip and I would have been embarrassed to give out the cabbage as there couldn't have been 1 leaf between us! Overall, do not think we had a good meal at all.

What a super venue. we needed to find a restaurant that was open on a Monday night and that could accommodate us arriving by helicopter. We rang the Landlord to find he "Glen" was very enthusiastic and informative. We landed some 30 mins later and whilst the kids piled out Glen met us at the helipad and escorted us in. The reception was warm and the wine cold. Whilst the menu was a little limited the food was cooked to perfection and the steak beautifully tender. Chef (Tina) later popped out to check all was well and our waiter (Tom) very attentive. after we were once more escorted back to the Helicopter. All in all we had a very lovely evening. good food, great service and a very warm welcome. we will be returning very soon. well done The Stag !!!

Having never been here before, even though it is close to me what I found was lovely. The food is honest and unassuming and extremely good value as are the drinks. The landlord is great and nothing is to much trouble. The Ham Egg and chips at £8.95 although simple is fantastic. For those dining on a budget it is great a Rib Eye Steak for £14.95. Going back this evening nice mid-week treat. They are doing a lot of improvements in a very tasteful manner. This is not a flash bistro pub just good honest grub. Great for walkers as well.

Very friendly pub. The local beer is very well kept and offers a good selection. The food is standard pub food, so not particularly ambitious, but you know what you're getting, and you wouldn't go there expecting a gourmet lunch anyway. During the Second World War there was an RAF Bomber Command airfield nearby, and the pub retains an impressive amount of associated memorabilia, which would be of interest to WW2/RAF/aeroplane enthusiasts. The landlord is fairly knowledgeable about the artefacts in the pub and is happy to talk to you about them when he's got time. There is lots of parking space and space for caravans and tents in the field at the back of the pub.

We had a good time at the restaurant, nestled away from wedding festivities elsewhere on the grounds. The wait staff were both friendly and attentive. The cream tea was good and we were indulged without the usual reservations requirement which was appreciated. Our sandwiches were fresh with tasty fillings and the scones warm and generously sized. However for the price we felt the trio of desserts was incredibly basic. A real shame since the rest was so enjoyable.

Used this eatery when staying at the Premier Inn Saffron Walton a couple of years ago and there were no complaints then but things have changed. When we went to get our table at 7.30pm we were told that we weren’t being rushed but we need to get our orders in before 7.40pm or we wouldn’t be able to eat anything as the kitchen closes at 8.00pm. Once seated we were then presented with both the menu and a list, equally as long, of items that weren’t available on the menu. By this time we only had 8 minutes on the clock to decide whilst cross-checking the menu! The food itself was pretty average. After the meal we went to have one more drink in the bar. Once sat down with our drinks we were quickly told it was last orders, soon after that, around 5 minutes, all guests had to leave the bar. The England game was switched off half way through, maybe not a bad thing, and the door was practically slammed behind us as we were turfed into the lobby with the remainder of our drinks. I realise this is not the staff’s fault, they are only enforcing the rules but it all felt very rushed and stressful. Other guests were clearly annoyed by this. On the whole I think the opening hours could be handled better and something needs to be done about the lack of options, whatever the reasons, it was embarrassing.
