The Stables in Sunderland

Went here today with my partner and little one. This restaurant will take some beating with the quality of their roast dinner! Literally the best one I’ve had in a restaurant with incredible value for money. Also the staff couldn’t do enough for my little girl and made her day. Can’t come back soon enough!

Just a heads up regarding allergies. On the tapas menu it states to speak to a member of staff if you have any allergies when ordering but this is a waste of time. My partner has a nut allergy and was refused every single item on the menu, he attempted to further understand this but repeatedly told no in a very abrupt manner much to other staff members surprise. A complete wasted journey and we left after our drink to an eatery that would cater to common allergies, would not recommend for any allergies or in general as very poor customer service throughout. We understand many allergies can be hard to cater too but if it is a point blank refusal this would be beneficial to advertise to avoid wasted journeys in future.

Not really a pub nor is it a restaurant, just an old converted farm building serving both, and certainly not the place to go if you just want refreshment. We really only wanted drinks but felt somewhat obliged to eat something so my friend had a Bruschetta and I requested a Cheeseburger thinking I would get a decent size burger with cheese, relish, pickle, etc, y'know just the sort of stuff you would expect in a decent burger - I didn't want chips but was happy to pay the asking price of £9. What I got was a 21/2" burger in a 3" Brioche bun ( who the hell ever thought it was a good idea to start putting meat in a desert bun). I would unfortunately have to agree with other comment regarding the staff who really need to learn the meaning ot the words welcome and friendliness. On the plus side they only charged me £5 for the burger and the Lager prices were very reasonable.

We decided to eat at the Stables on the way Bruce Springsteen concert at the Stadium of light. The meal was absolutely delicious the portions were generous, and the food came piping hot. We would highly recommend eating here as the staff were lovely. Thank you.

Been here for drinks twice prior Meals looked good so visited for lunch today. Didn't regret it We had mushrooms in blue cheese and garlic sauce on ciabatta and prawns with garlic sauce to start, unreal! My Fiancée had fish and chips and I had sausage and cheese mash with red wine onion gravy. Never seen mash with a cheese pull like that before The table next to us ordered a pie which came rustic and uneven, like my gran had made it. For the quality they served they could charge more and I would pay it. Cannot wait to eat here again. Also cheapest pint of Stellar around 5*+

Wonderful pub food, a class above. Staff friendly, helpful and great service. Homely surroundings, Car parking a bit tight when busy. Best to book.

Fantastic pub/restaurant beautifully done out, great atmosphere with dog friendly bar. Stunning inside and pleasant staff. The Stables is very busy and we had to wait a while even though we'd booked. Not a problem as had a drink at the bar. Atmosphere really is lovely and somewhere you dont want to hurry. Couldnt fault our food at all. Between us had salmon risotto, chicken in peppercorn sauce and hunters chicken. Highly recommend the onion rings! Desserts and coffee all very reasonably priced. Only a small car park and parking nearby is possible, though with it being popular, it can be tricky. Be highly suprised if theres anywhere better nearby. 👍

A lovely authentic pub which does lovely food and is fantastic value . There is a welcoming and dog friendly area for those with their furry friends with them. Could not recommend more highly.

Well yet again, never disappointed with the food and the staff. It was rather busy which speaks for itself and the staff managed great. As for the review from Durham 396 how can you review a place without even entering, I’m sure you could have gotten your two seater broom parked somewhere.

Lunch today was amazing. From the starters of prawn cocktail to the Stilton and walnut pate , to the mains of turkey dinners for some, salmon for a couple and a nut roast for me. The service was impeccable ,and the waitress Nicki was absolutely excellent along with help from Rachael. Desserts were beautiful and all in all an excellent afternoon of excellent food and good company. Thankyou . We will be back.

Came here for a Christmas meal with work colleagues and have to say it was well worth it. Food was top notch and staff were great. The place is so cosy and has a lovely feel. Definitely a place I will return to. Thank you for a great evening.

Excellent lunchtime visit. We hadn’t booked but Nikki managed to allocate a table for us. Drinks were served promptly by a young lady who was cheerful and professional. The food was a little slow to arrive but they were busy and we weren’t in any great rush so that was fine. The food was worth waiting for. Hunters Chicken and a grilled Chicken burger. Hot and tasty. When it came to pay the bill, Nikki our host walked how everything had been with our visit and if we were happy with food etc. A short, pleasant conversation as we paid the bill. We were made to feel welcome as valued customers. Many local eateries and pubs would do well to emulate the staff at The Stables. We’ll definitely return. Thank you.

Went with the family and the dog. Quirky pub, nice staff, excellent food by good chefs and certainly a pub i would go back to.

Had an amazing experience today here. The food was tremendous as it was last time we were here, we came back because of the warm greeting we received last time from the waitress with the red hair. We were so happy to see her there again and again we got greeted and seated without prior booking. I ordered the chicken burger and there was a choice between battered or plain and she was great in recommending, I went with the battered and I am so pleased I did. Can’t wait to come back. Just left the stables after some tasty food for lunch. My husband had the steak & ale pie which he loved and being a vegetarian I got the veg & mozzarella ciabatta with delicious chunky chips. All the staff were very friendly and it was very good value for money. The pub inside is lovely and quirky.

Great pub, food was great. Pity about most of the staff. Greeted by a staff member who was rude and abrupt. Stood at the bar to be ignored by 2 staff members then they served 2 people before me knowing I was there first! Like I said great place and lovely food, shame about the staff.

Called here today after work for lunch with my Husband. He had the Salmon and risotto I had the Steak and ale pie with mash and it was absolutely delicious. We had a lovely chilled bottle of wine to go with it and were so happy with the service too. It was really busy when we called so we were pleased they could fit us in as we hadn’t booked. Can’t fault a single thing, Highly recommended.

Overdue this write up, but The Stables is consistently spot on every time we've been. Lunchtime is busy, best to book, and its no surprise. Menu is extremely impressive for such a small place, everything from Thai style curry to a Sunday roast type meal....

AVOID AVOID AVOID. The worst place to eat in the northeast. The staff are absolutely terrible. They're miserable, rude and ignorant. The food is usually cold, the reason why is it is probably reheated. AVOID AVOID AVOID

Nice place with a cosy atmosphere. Food arrived and looked good, decent portions but overall was pretty bland. I ordered the belly pork dinner and got one piece of belly pork and some pretty tough slices of roast pork. Overall was ok but nothing special.

What can I say, if it is very good food you want, this is the place be. Very friendly staff and a lovely lay out inside, the only problem you will have is looking at the meales you have not ordered, although what you have ordered will be very good and tasty, everything you see that other people have ordered looks fantastic and you will be thinking i should have ordered that, but all the food is excellent

Best Sunday lunch around, but great for food any day of the week. Friday Nad Saturday Tapas is exceptionally good value and quality. Not hungry, just sit at the bar and enjoy the atmosphere.

Recently visited for a family birthday on a Saturday afternoon.We pre booked and were shown to our table, which was in the centre of the floor. Being a Saturday lunchtime it was quite noisy so struggled to hear each other. Drinks and main courses were ordered quite promptly and while the drinks arrived straightaway the food took an age.When the food did arrive it was hot, plenty of it and very tasty. The sea food Thai curry is definitely recommended. Once finished the dishes took a while to be cleared. We did not want a desert but ordered coffee, which again took a while to arrive.The food is of excellent quality and decent value for money in nice surroundings but almost 2 hours for one course and coffee is a bit long. Not sure the delay was caused by the serving staff or kitchen, however, as the food arrived piping hot I suspect the latter.A bit disappointing but hopefully it will be better next time.

This was the second visit of mine but first for my family...lovely layout inside. Staff very friendly. Food fab- hubby had the pie that even he couldn't finish...all home cooked so bit of a wait but really worth it. Would definately advise to book as got very busy on our visit. Great value too. Only downside is that the parking could be a problem if arrived late on. Would go again for sure.

We have previously visited the Stables for Christmas Lunch but not in the numbers we did this year. The food was delicious, the service outstanding and we had a most enjoyable time. It is a real gem of a place and always delights!

Visited with two friends. We had pre booked but had to wait an hour before our meal was served. There were only two /three tables occupied when we arrived but apparently all the other tables had pre booked their actual meal. Despite the long wait, the meal was beautiful. My meal was a turkey Christmas dinner and it was perfect. My friends had broth and fish and chips . Both said their meals we lovely. The desserts were equally delicious. The staff were lovely, and despite being tremendously busy, were very friendly and efficient when ordering extra drinks. All in all a lovely experience and well worth the wait.

We went again this week for a Christmas meal. The food was second to none. Friendly staff great ambiance.its definitely worth a visit. We love it.

Visited this place many times and has always been good. I went lon Wednesday 13th November (unlucky for some) with five other people and ordered the panaccilty. It was very poor. The dish arrived covered in a very dark gravy which was far too salty. It was obviously not cooked in the the gravy just poured over afterwards. The potatoes were not cooked properly either. I called the waitress over and she blamed the problem on the corned beef but we make this dish often and that has never been a problem with us. I reordered and plumped for the roast. When this came it was accompanied by the same dark salty gravy and whilst the beef was excellent the veg were tasteless. The service was slow that night too.

First visit to the stables for Sunday lunch and very impressed. Great menu, lots of choice. Beautiful decor and the staff were so attentive......and most importantly the food was delicious. Hot ,tasty ,lots of vegetables. A must if you havent been here. Dont forget to book well in advance as you won't get in otherwise. Will be returning very soon!

My absolute favourite pub to drop into after a walk around Herrington country park. Good food, great staff, and always busy and buzzing with great atmosphere. Booking is advised if you wish to eat.

Wow, just got home from Sunday lunch, it was amazing. The food was superb, mixed table of vegetarian and meat eaters, it was lovely to have a vegetarian option that still let you feel you were having a Sunday lunch. The Yorkshire puddings were incredible and staff were brilliant as always. Lots of people being turned away as they hadn’t booked which is always a good sign

Had visitors to UK and wanted to take them to good old fashioned pub. The Stables didn’t disappoint. They loved it. The food was really good too. We were greeted by a lovely Scottish lady, it’s a shame the other staff were not as welcoming. They weren’t rude, they just didn’t add to the experience, also trying to catch their eye to re order drinks wasn’t easy. Overall though, a lovely night out In a delightful pub.

Having previously visited for evening meals and thoroughly enjoyed thought we would try Sunday Lunch.

Visited twice, both on a Friday night for tapas. Can't fault the food, it was bautiful. However on both occasions terrible service. Staff were unwelcoming and unfriendly on both visits. A mistake that was made by staff was made out to be my own and i was spoken too as if I was stupid for questioning it. The mistake was still not rectifed. It appears a lovely pub for locals but as a visitor we were made to feel unwelcome. For this reason I would not visit again, despite the food being lovely.

Although our local been a while since we’ve visited for Sunday lunch But decided to go this week with my hubby and son. Great menu, lovely food at a good price and a nice relaxed atmosphere.

After a lovely morning down the beach Margo (my pooch) and I popped in for Sunday lunch. Been promising a visit on a Sunday for weeks but today was the day. We were both made to feel welcome as soon as we stepped through the door both from staff and other diners. Sunday lunch is my favourite meal of the week and the Stables didn’t disappoint. Beef

My Wife and I visited the Stables yesterday. It was our third visit and certainly the best yet. As our main dish my wife had the belly pork whilst I had a rib eye steak. The pork was recommended and was exceptionally nice, the supporting vegetables were also perfectly cooked and presented. No complaints from my perspective either, all aspects of the dish were perfect. Our starters were also first rate: haggis and a tomato and basil soup.

Great place, atmosphere, food and prices plus the service excellent. I will be going back soon, my wife and daughter also love it . Marcello

Went to the stables pub yesterday for lunch. We hadn’t booked but we should have the place was packed. Nicola got us a great table. There was 5 of us. We all ordered different from the menu. This is a really popular pub which offers a wide choice of good quality food. It is always very busy. It has a nice outdoor area and is dog friendly. I went as part of a large group and we all enjoyed our food. Good chips!
