Have had several average meals from the Spice Tree but tonight’s hit a new low. Tasteless Sag aloo, greasy slimy Keema mushrooms, horrid sweaty nan bread in a bag. But worst of all, both “chicken” orders contained something that was hard, stringy and tasted surprisingly like turkey… week old, tough turkey. Will NOT be ordering from here again 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 I’ve given a 4 for service as the delivery driver was nice, but everything else was awful

I don't often write bad reviews, but having reflected for 24 hours, need to alert people to how bland the food is from here. Chicken pakoras that had no spice or flavour, a tasteless prawn puri, and a range of curries that mainly just tasted of watery tomato puree. All perfectly edible, but completely tasteless and not BIR curries. Just use some spices and aromatics! Really .. if you like BIR .. do not order from here .. £80 takeaway for 6 .. we were mugged!

Driver did offer to take it back but what's the difference in them putting it in a microwave than me. I had to reheat the meal due to the fact it way early. Ever tried warming up chips? They are really no good. If they don't read the notes that if someone had a food allergy??? Would they bother reading it?

Ordered food last night costing £37.50 and we were starving as we arrived at our hotel late. Excited on arrival of the take away...... it all went down from there. This is NOT indian food! Visit the west midlands UK for good indian food Five Rivers is one of them. The bindi curry was slop, the lamb was hard and chewy in slop, the chicken was okay but again served in dish water slop! The Garlic naan tasted of nothing. We didnt attempt the rest. Even the raita was sloppy and watery. DONT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE. There is no flavour or spice about it and how dare you call this curry!!! Its a disgrace and waste of money! In the end we had to travel to a mcdonalds 7 miles out of Nelson!!! No thanks to this place!!!

We considered ourselves regular customere until tonight! We ordered an indian NYE. After receiving our order nearly an hour late. We discovered we were missing our chutney tray and poppdoms plus our onion bajhees and meal was freezing! We phoned back to the Indian to complain but were told our food was cold due to it being a cold night and nothing to do with it being an hr late! We've had plenty of Indians in the winter and never caused a problem before! Anyway.... they offered to send us a replacement meal but would take atleast another 30mins. By this point we were starving so we warmed our meal up In the microwave. We then agreed with the lady on the phone that on our next order we would receive the chutney tray and poppdoms which we never recieved and also complimentary onion bajhees becuase we couldn't eat the ones we received as they were freezing and tasted bland with the chutney tray and poppdoms. Which brings me to tonight....my hubby phoned to place our order. Explained what happened on NYE. Firstly he spoke to a lady who advised they only had a chutney tray written down, no poppdoms or onion bajhees.. Hubby asked to speak to the manager. The manager bluntly said you should expect your meal to be early, on time or late. (No-one would expect thier meal and hour late!) He said he would only give us the chutney tray. His attitude was disgusting. My hubby told he was disappointed and would go somehwre else instead, the managers reply was "I won't be blackmailed" and then hung up the phone. The customer service has been absolutely disgusting and will never return! The meal wasn't great on NYE anyway but thought we'd give them a second chance!

I have been a very happy customer of the Spice Tree since it opened some 5 or more years ago. It was my Indian takeaway of choice where I would regularly buy takeaways. I bought one last Saturday and sadly it will be my last. The attention to detail in the ingredients used have definitely deteriorated. The meat is not great. Most disappointing was the cheese keema nan. Very little meat, and they used a cheap processed orange cheese slice. It looked totally disgusting, a lovely nan bread covered in the horrible orange sticky goo. Whilst only worth a couple of quid, it literally spoilt my whole experience that night and forever more as I was thinking what other cheap ingredients do they use. Surely they could have used real proper cheese, they are not being sold for less. I am still unhappy and will not be eating there again. ;-(

Before hand I was a bit sceptical as the last meal we had from there was very ordinary. We booked a table thinking on a Friday night it would have been busy, disappointingly, we were the only ones in the restaurant. We were met at the door and shown to our table, drinks were served and meal was ordered. Within minutes the popadoms were on the table (the lime pickle I'm sure was vindaloo strength). We polished them off and the mains were on the table, served by a very friendly and chatty waiter. The food was of a very high standard ( I had the chicken Rezalla). And its not very often you clear your plates, but I assure you, they were cleared. Will definitely be returning. we also had a vegetarian dish, which again was one of the best dishes I've tasted.

A delightful night out with my wonderful cousins. They picked the restaurant. The menu is extensive, but we were swayed by the cheap 4 course meal offer, which also had a lot of alternatives. Poppadoms arrived swiftly. I wasn't enamoured of the pickles and chutneys, all a bit unnatural. Why don't they try making their own. I'm spoilt from 12 years of Manchester's Curry Mile and the wonderful coriander and coconut chutneys. Anyway, very generous with 8 huge poppadoms for 4 people.

Called to The Spice Tree last evening for a meal and we chose the four course special £14.95. What a disappointment!!! the mint dip and mango chutney to start were only what I could describe as 'strange' -the mint dip had little or no mint in it and was like thickened milk, the mango chutney a very strange colour and frankly tasteless. The second course chicken chat in my case appeared to be a sauce from a jar with bits of chicken in and a tiny sprinkle of coriander to make it seem authentic! Mains were no better again in my opinion a bought in sauce with a little cream drizzled on top, the chicken appeared to me like pre-sliced chicken tikka you would get in a packet which had been put in the sauce. The surroundings were ok nothing more and the ladies toilet was grubby. Had I visited there initially I would have left.

Very disorganised and I don't think anyone knew what their role was . Fp if you are lucky to be busy and there is a wait to be seated we as the customers are happy with that but after you have been seated you wait 20 minutes for a drink and another 30 mins for food order . Think they concentrate too much on their deliveries so restaurant customers are left watching the staff in chaos mode. We actually cancelled our food order and left after our starters cause by then the hunger ad disappeared and we were worried that we would be late for our planned night out . We returned after drinks were tipped over us on a previous visit but after the attitude of the old man last night we won't be rushing back !!!

Strangely enough they all looked the same and tasted similar which was very strange. The chips were very weird too . Best thing was the garlic naan which was very nice. Felt uncomfortable with other guests calling waiters guptar n ghandi . Our waiter (malibu man) was friendly but didnt really have a clue as he didnt even know what we were having. We live locally and had been given the best type of recommendation - word of mouth - so decided to give it a try and were not disappointed. From Sunday to Thursday they do a set price, 4 course menu, for £12.50 per person and there was not the usual limited 3 - 4 choices but there are about 6 - 7 starters, approx 15 main courses, 6 - 7 choices of sundries and around 5 desserts to choose from and this price also includes poppadoms and chutneys. When placing the order, the lady was knowledgeable about the food and different flavours and as my mother doesn't really enjoy anything too spicy, even offered to make any of the curry's to a milder flavour. When the food arrived, it was piping hot and even though we all ordered from the special set menu, the portion size was excellent. They also offer a take away menu here and the phone was busy all the time we were in the restaurant so its obviously a popular place with the locals. Well done to The Spice Tree, we will be returning.

Very strange to say the least. Starters were ok, onion bhajees not the best ,bit tasteless, nan bread quite tough and leathery. Drinks fairly priced. There were 2 waiters that served us, the older one seemed stressed, had a rather unhappy face and looked as though everything was too much trouble, however he seemed content to keep returning to talk to a couple on another table he obviously knew, rather than serve our table. The Spice Tree was so dark inside, despite it being a bright summer evening, that a torch would have been handy to read the menu or see what it was that we were eating. The menu was quite extensive but what I fancied most was some old favourites so I opted for a classic starter and a vegetable balti for mains with naan bread. We also ordered some pappadums which came with a chutney tray. The pappadums were fine, but I wasn't very enamoured with my starter or main, or even the naan bread, and I'm usually very easy to please. Its a first for me to have any kind of vegetable main course at an Indian restaurant where, apart from the white button mushrooms, I had no idea what I was eating. It was like a bowl of thick curry sauce with a minimum of texture. On a positive note the drinks were great, the staff were friendly and the company was top notch! I wish I had left without visiting the loos, but I did visit the loos. There's no excuse for black grime around the taps, black mould in the toilet bowl and a general air of uncleanliness. When a restaurant is happy to display its lack of hygiene in its public spaces it makes you wonder what are they like behind the scenes. The Spice Tree doesn't have a great appearance from the outside but the look improves a bit on entry (if you can actually see) and the staff are lovely which makes it all the harder to write what for me is a rare negative review. The Spice Tree was awarded a Food Hygiene Rating of 3 (Generally Satisfactory) 18 months ago. The report indicated "confidence in the management - some". It wouldn't surprise me if that was the last time the toilet facilities had a good clean.Photo to follow - taken with a flash. See if you can recognise what I'm eating beyond the wee white button mushroom lol.

I used to go here all the time as the restaurant is nice and the meal deals they do are excellent value. Went here with friends recently though, and unfortunately the food was quite bland in most the meals we tried. The meal deals are still on and again, these can't be beaten on value, but we did find that the customer service has gone down hill. Surly waiter, and even the guy I thought was the manager seemed to be in a mood. I've been here lots of times in the past and things were much better. I can only think that maybe the waiters are getting fed up of customers ordering off the cheaper menus, but that's not the customer's fault if the offers are on? Come on Spice Tree, please don't go down hill, you've been consistently good before, just need to work on improving the flavour a little and being a bit friendlier to the customers.

Well after a few recommendations to try the food at The Spice Tree we thought we would give it a go. We arrived at a nice quiet time of 1800 on a Sunday evening. We was greeted by a lovely older gent who worked there. He took us to our seat and brought our drinks. The food arrived timely and fast. My 2nd course of the 4 courses was stunning, yet a curly pube like hair lingered on the top like garnish. Flicked it off and thought nothing of it. The mains were delivered and the sizes were brilliant especially for £9.95 a set. My issue was with the younger gent who cleared and delivered the plates. I couldn't finish my meal so asked if I could take it home, never had a problem before and I thought it's quite the compliment to the food. Well the spare naan bread was added to the waste so I thought what's the point. I then said no don't worry I don't need it now. He did not like this and from that point became rude. I wanted to complain but withheld. Good food overall but quite rude staff, well 1 in particular. Change his attitude and I may return if not it's the Viceroy in Ystrad. Regards Stuart.

I have never had food taste so good, I was shocked by how nice every course of the 4 course tasted, This was my first time to eat there and we took a family member for their birthday, so glad we did, everyone including the kids truly enjoyed every mouthful, only disappointment was with myself for not taking cash to leave a big tip as i paid by card, Thanks yo to all staff for making it a wonderful night.

My title pretty much says it all. We were at The Spice Tree with good friends from Gelli Gaer. Earlier this year we went to "The Flavour of India" in Ystrad Mynach. To be frank, that place is rather bizarre, but you can't say that about this place. So the deco there is modern and clean, but they do have that annoying laminate flooring so when you take your seat it's like dancing on ice. But that's a minor personal thing. We all went of the deal they do on the 4 course meal which costs £11.95. The price is good, however some if the food is a bit bland and some was ok. All in all it was a bit average, but the company was great as was the service. Also the staff there are all very pleasant as is the ambience. So would we go back ...... well that's a yes from me. Just work on getting a bit more of the Flavour of India in to your food guys!

Popped in for tea, been a few times over the past few months, I'm local so it's nice not to have to drive, plus they serve cobra so that's never gonna happen, food is fresh, beautifully cooked and presented, customer service is great, made to feel welcome every visit, was a busy night and we never felt like we were waiting, drinks flowing, food served regular course after course, left feeling full and completely satisfied, menu is so reasonably priced it's unreal. Wish I could eat there every night.

This is a lovely restaurant, the service was excellent and the food delicious. The portions are plentiful, freshly prepared and appetising. We were very pleased overall and intend to return in a month or so. They also cater for the Take Away market and also deliver ..well worth thinking about if you live locally and don't feel like dining out.

I've tried curry houses all over the UK, in my opinion The Spice Tree is definitely the best in South Wales. It's EXCEPTIONAL value for money with the meal deals (mid week about £8 for popadums, starter, main, rice or nan, Friday/Saturdays about £11 for 5 courses). The chicken dansak is one of the best I've ever tasted, and presentation and waiter service is fabulous. Even if you go for a meal deal, the portion sizes and presentation is the same, it's lovely. I would always go back here and have recommended to friends who once they've tried it have said the same! I also love the whole look of the place, it's really chilled out with the different coloured lighting and is spotlessly clean.

We 4 of us called in Thursday, lovely welcome, not may in there but felt comfortable.Food came on cold plates but the food was ok/average, not as good as the last time we called, got the impression it was the main chefs night off. We will call back but looking for a far better quality meal with a fair amount of meat as opposed to mostly vegetables. But we did enjoy ourselves!

Food is always lovely and the staff are fantasic! Always go above and beyond expectations. My hubby loves the fact that he can take home a 'doggy bag' if he cant eat it all.....it really is too good to waste!

Food was a bit bland, the garlic bread was undercooked and the food wasn't served piping hot. The set menu is excellent value for money and the service was excellent. The restaurant is nicely decorated but the toilets weren't that clean.

Having eaten here a number of times both sit down and take away I find the review above very hard to believe. The staff are amazing nothing is too much trouble for them and they are always happy to have a chat and make sure you are ok. Food is amazing and great value I always eat from the set menu 4 courses for £9.95 and have yet to reach the dessert as portions are more than enough but they will happily pack up dessert for you to take with you. Tables cleaned with anti bac spray I have seen then do this !!! Will say this is not your traditional Indian restaurant staff very pleasant and it's such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere I highly recommend you try this restaurant.

I have had lots of takeaways from here when I am home visiting my parents, We always have a delivery which normally takes around 45 minutes, The food is always of good standard, I always order the Vegetable Thali but alternate the curry dishes on offer, The price is around £ 9.00 for the meal which is excellent value, You have Onion bhaji, poppadum's, chutneys and pickles, Main curry, Bombay potato, mushroom bhaji, rice and nan bread.... all this for £ 9.00. I have not eaten at the restaurant so can't comment but the take away and delivery services are great. Fab Indian for miles around, well done.

First time here, first appearances were of a quite busy restaurant, decorated in modern style, with pop music playing on speakers. Hadn't booked and we were asked to have a drink while they prepared a table, which only took 5 minutes or so. A lot of staff on duty so not surprised at speedy response.Note that number of staff smoking outside entrance, not a good sight especially for non smokers like my wife and especially when they immediately return to their duties without appearing to wash their hands, also one of our waiters had a streaming cold, was using an obviously we'll used tissue and then handing plates with food on them, hygiene training wasn't much in evidence. Quite a number of tables had been used and dirty dishes left where they were, if someone came in one of those tables were then cleared, but no sign of any spray cleaner being used, even though they were stored on a serving trolley which was butted up to our table! As an example when a waiter tried to remove one of the metal Korai serving dishes from our table so that some space could be made, it was stuck to the table, the waiter had to put down things in order to use both hands to free the dish from the surface of the table. As someone who's eaten many meals in Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant's typically staff are attentive and serve in a professional manner, not so at The Spice Tree, got the impression they were expecting a busy night (there was a party of 20 or so in one area), but it wasn't over busy a number of tables were empty, some of the staff(local people it seemed) were clueless. Food dropped on the floor was left there no attempt to pick it up, not much attention to the normal basics of running a restaurant.Won't be returning read their comments book and was astonished at how many positive and complimentary comments were in it, did these people eat at the same place we did?

Fantastic food and never had a bad experience. Quality food and host is always pleasant when picking up the order. Kids are always fussy eaters but they love this place. Honey chicken is a winner with the kids!

Ordered from Uber Eats apparently they just delivered to another house. Didnt even resemble my address. They do their own deliveries after contacting uber eats. I would avoid if you want a guaranted delivery on a weekend . Sorry I cant comment on the food only the service, but they both go hand in hand. A very dissapointed family on a Friday night. Please dont make teh same mistake we did. I wont ever be ordering from them again.
