Went for a beer and Sunday lunch. Pub looked very nice from outside and service was good. Butcombe Gold was the ale. Ordered two Sunday roasts.. beef (£16 each). The food came out quite quick and looked good but the beef was poor. It was very chewy and extremely fatty. All veg, Yorkies and gravy was good though. Waitress spoke to us after the meal and asked if all was okay. We said yes, except for the beef as you can see, most of it has been left .. it is very chewy and mainly fat. She apologised and that was it. Sorry to say, but will not be returning.

My Tropical fish gets fed better food than they can provide, it was absolutely terrible I would not expect my dog to eat that.

Arranged to meet for lunch with a couple of ex colleagues. Not a particularly busy Tuesday lunchtime. Nice pub with large rear garden. We sat inside as the weather had turned. Nice classic burger with fries and a pint of bitter. Friendly service. Nothing not to like.

Really good food, friendly service and a wonderful garden. The options for vegetarians could be more, but overall it was a pleasant experience. Highly recommended 👍

Lovely friendly pub. Nice food. Good for a few drinks and lunch or Sunday roast. Not a huge menu but good quality and genuine pub feel. Butcombe beer is outstanding. Book on Sunday as it get busy. Thanks to the staff.

Lovely pub and atmosphere. Good range of IPA's available and if you like Buttcombe Brewery, there's plenty of that, too! Only went in for adrink, but the food I saw coming out looked fresh, hot and very appealing - would be keen to return and try it.

We met here yesterday, and totally fell in love with it.... Something a bit different, warm welcome and surroundings good choice of beers and lagers A good choice of food.... I went for the charcuterie board with fresh whit bloomer while my 2 companions chose the pies.... Loved it, hope to be back again.. 😋👌

My daughter found this pub on line as we are not familiar with Malmesbury. We were able to park easily on the High Street, there is no parking at the pub. We had a lovely circular river walk and were then all ready to consume a drink and a roast. We were given a nice big table in the bar, the bar is rustic and welcoming to families and dogs, there is a good choice of family games for customer use. I couldn’t fault the Smoking Dog. The staff were friendly and welcoming, with a great choice of beer, wine etc. The menu is extensive and caters for vegans and vegetarians. Being meat eaters my husband was delighted with his huge pile of gammon! My roast was superb, we asked for a few more roasties, no problem and no charge. A very relaxed atmosphere, we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at The Smoking Dog and highly recommend it.

Fantastic village pub in the Cotswolds. Hearty log fire in the winter making it cosy. Ate dinner here and the food was superb. The cod was amazing - cooked perfectly and super tasty. The staff are friendly and approachable. I highly recommend a visit! Probably best to book in advance if you want to eat as the pub was quite busy when we visited.

Just had the most amazing pork tenderloin in black pudding sauce. Partner had the chicken en croute. Great service by fantastic new owners, food was amazing, prices reasonable. 100% recommend. If you've not eaten here recently, you're missing out.

Visited A Few Months Ago in August. Lovely Pub with a lovely atmospheric beer garden, the food was fantastic and an cut above your average pub food, the parmesan fries were too die for and the staff were delightful

Nice pub, visited Sunday told it closed at 6.00 disappointing as we were on for the long hall.

Good real ale, friendly and efficient service with effective, albeit smokey, log burner.

If you appreciate excellent food, this is the place for you in Malmesbury. The menu is limited, but the advantage is that every dish they prepare is absolutely top-notch quality and totally delicious. The food prices are not cheap, but you have to pay a premium if you want the quality. Having said that, the prices aren't ridiculously high either. A good selection of Butcombe beers (and others) is available. Very friendly staff. The downside is that phone signals aren't great in that area, so occasionally the card payment machine can't connect and you have to pay cash.

They seemed reluctant to sell food. Went somewhere else.

If you are in the area this place is a must even if it is just for a drink but we highly recommend the food too, it's delicious! It was a spontaneous find for us when we wanted shelter from the rain on a visit to the area, but what a find this was and on 2 for 1 burger night as well! (That are hand made by the chef) The warm welcome from the lady behind the bar made our visit even more lovely when she got chatting to us whilst petting our two dogs as we were admiring the immaculately kept historic building this pub was in and we only seen the bar area. Don't hesitate this pub is top notch!

A solid, yet largely unremarkable, pub offering Butcombe-brewed beers and a surprising spacious garden. The food represented decent, honest pub grub (I went for a fish finger sandwich with quite excellent chips) but wasn't overly memorable. All in all a pleasant experience but a venue that doesn't make my Pubs That I Must Visit Again list.

This is a cracking pub. The landlady is very friendly and amenable. The pub has character and the food and ale are good. Recommended.

Good service, lovely location, nice building, gardens and decor. Food generally good but my chicken caesar salad had far too much vinaigrette, so much I'm suffering acid reflux about 6 hours later. A small detail perhaps, but a heads up to the chef on the afternoon on 4/6/22 to take a little more care next time.

Went for Sunday lunch great service, friendly, great lunch. Went back next night, 2 4 1 burgers, totally different. Went to pay bill and they should have been small burgers apparently, not what we had, no lamb, no marinated chicken. Attitude from the owner. But we got the deal. Its a shame. Spoilt a really good first visit.

Had previously booked. It was a busy weekend due to Badminton Horse trials. There was very little choice left on the menu. Had run out of most things!! The waitress was lovely, felt so sorry for her as she was constantly apologising.

Stopped in the Smoking Dog Malmesbury to watch the Calcutta Cup. Enjoyed the ambience. The Prices sadly England lost, well done Scotland. The fish and chips I had were great, however my wife found the tagliatelle with roasted cauliflower, Broccoli and parmasan was not as expected. They deducted the whole cost of the plate from our bill... wonderful service, would return next time in area. Check it out. We'll worth the cost of a pint!

A little pub located in the heart of Malmesbury, it's as picturesque and filled with character as the historic town itself. Walk in and you're greeted by walls of old, exposed gray stone, merry, mismatched wooden tables and chairs and a pretty little bar that has a hefty collection of beers and ciders on tap. Very Ye Olde English Pub without being kitschy or trying too hard. Does a very good Bangers and Mash and Ham, Eggs and Chips. Valeria, the bar manager is friendly and pleasant to chat to, and makes sure you're comfortable. Overall, a nice, cosy place to be in, especially when it's cold and windy outside (as it often is in England :)). Oh, and the loos are sparkling clean. Will be back for sure!

We visited The Smoking Dog in the first weekend of December for our annual Christmas Family Break. All we can say is the burgers are as smokin’ as the name of the pub! We were greeted by a wonderful kind Lady who told us about their infamous burgers and served us immediately! The atmosphere is so quaint and humble, and to be in a pub where the owner is just as happy to chat with you is very hard to come by. Highly recommend to visit especially if you have a family of fussy eaters!!! Xx

The Smoking Dog is a super friendly and cozy pub . The staff are really friendly and accommodating and the food is excellent. The meat and cheese platter was epic. The pub feels like a social hub for Malmesbury, you can really feel the community spirit when you’re here. Great place and will 100% be coming back here again.

After visiting the nearby abbey, we popped into The Smoking Dog...only to have one of our favorite meals during our latest trip to the UK. The couple running the pub are absolutely delightful, and we enjoyed our conversations with them almost as much as the delicious food. If you're looking for the perfect English pub, don't miss this spot.

Really lovely cosy pub, great food and friendly staff. Me and my partner stopped in for lunch when visiting Malmesbury and were served quickly. I had the venison burger and my partner had the pork burger, both were very yummy and I would definitely visit again if in the area! (Also nice to see that they were dog friendly 🐾)

Nice pub with a decent menu and good service

A surprisingly contemporary and spacious pub in an old fashioned town, in fact something of an oasis. Both the wine and beer were good (Butcombe ales) and the food was extremely tasty, the meat being locally sourced. Service was friendly. It was very quiet when we visited, but it was a weekday lunchtime, but I'm sure more people search it out at the lower end of the town in an evening.

Stopped in for lunch on a bike tour and friendly staff let us take our bikes out to a lovely pub garden. Had a nice pint of Butcombe bitter and a great sandwich. Good to see loads of bottles of sauce on the tables, none of those horrible sachets.

Took the family for lunch, lovely atmosphere with a great outdoor dining area. Staff were very attentive and friendly, the food was served quickly and presented well. We all enjoyed our food, would recommend the burgers. We will definitely go back.

Watch out for the "2-4-1 Burgers on a Monday" offer displayed on a chalkboard behind the bar! After ordering a Lamb & Mint burger and Beef burger both identical in price, the staff refused to recognise this was included in the offer. We politely challenged them on this but they wouldn't acknowledge an error on their part and continued to charge us full price.

Food was average/ bad/ tasteless. Service, felt ignored, wasn’t until I got up and wondered to the bar I got asked if there was anything I needed. Wouldn’t come back or recommend.

Called in late afternoon and we were able to secure an early evening booking, on a busy Saturday evening.Service was friendly and efficient, food was good pub standard.Burgers had a made on the premises look and tasteWe loved the amount of effort this place has put into re-opening their business in COVID complaint times, with lots of covered outdoor space, much deserving of support!

Be wary if you have any food allergies. Not good for vegetarians and vegans. No online menu to check beforehand - so hopefully this is useful. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the beer garden is also very nice and dog friendly... however, the menu desperately needs an overhaul, including allergen information. We had a bad experience when we ate here this week where feta was included in a starter, but wasn't listed on the menu. Staff weren't knowledgeable about allergens ("do vegans eat fish??'" = the manager) and so didn't really take this seriously. There was just one (sold out) vegetarian option, and absolutely nothing suitable for vegans - aside from the olives with surprise feta! The really helpful staff did cobble together a chopping board of random veg for us (for the princely sum of £23.90!) but there was nothing non-dairy for dessert and no non-dairy milk, so we couldn't even have a nice coffee. So, a perfect place for beers in the sunshine, but to be avoided if you have dietary requirements and want to eat.

Lovely looking pub . We just Popped in for a drink. We sat inside because outside was full. We signed in and gave our details for track and trace.In the time it took to drink a small lemonade , I watched 16 people just walk in and either didn't sign the book or scan the track and trace code !

I would love to give it 5 * but they never answer their phone. I've been trying to get takeaway for months and they never answer their phone. Now that things are open, tried booking a table, again, never answer their phone. Try doing it myself online, booking service doesn't even list the smoking dog as an option. I have to go a distance to visit there so I'm going to just show up on the off chance it's full so answering the phone would be helpful...

Nice, enclosed garden. Good service and good choice of food, plus a vegan option. A place we would go back to.

OUTSTANDING FOOD, FABULOUS PUB, VERY WELL RAN UNDER THE NEW OWNER, OUTSTANDING GARDEN, BEAUTIFUL

Today, Sunday 2nd May, my family and I visited the Smoking Dog for Lunch, after hearing good reviews for a Sunday Lunch. The pub feels homely, clean, and the Garden is excellent. Food was top class, we had an exceptional meal, with great service. Roast dinner was exceptional, and we had one of the best burgers I've tasted for a long time. Will almost certainly be coming back.

Beautiful outdoor space and socially distanced

Visited the SMOKING DOG yesterday with my Family. Lee the new manager has got the dog back on form with great service, beer and food. Lee's also an excellent chef and the food [Pie of the Day and Veg Burger plus 2 children's meals & desert] was excellent. The garden is very well layed out with both cover and open areas for all weathers. Nice Lighting for night-time too. Thanks, we'll be back soon!

Lovely Dig friendly pub, food was amazing, have some great deals on at the moment looking forward to sampling them all at some point, they have a new Chef and the improvement in the food quality is noticeable, high end food at pub prices! Whats not to like, I highly recommend this place especially the Sunday roast and the to die for desserts!

My partner and I were passing by and we stopped by for lunch. The staff were super friendly and attentive. Even though it wasn’t busy due to the restrictions, the atmosphere was great. We had the corn fed chicken and roasted hake and they were both wonderfully cooked.

I visited again for a birthday dinner with my son. Promptly shown to our table, cosy and warm and a clear menu provided. Given time to ponder, whilst our drinks were arranged and brought to our table. I had salmon fillet with roasted winter vegetables and I have to say it was very tasty, juicy, fresh and perfectly seasoned! A short visit this time but well worth every pound spent!
