This is a totally charming Hotel. On arrival I was welcomed by a very friendly and efficient receptionist. I was travelling alone so had a nice single room which had everything you could need for an overnight stay and the bed was very comfortable. I had a great evening meal very tasty and good value and breakfast Was filling and appetising. I would recommend staying there if you are in the area. I certainly would if I was in the area again

I like the thought that people have been staying in this fine old building since the18th century, enjoying good food, beer and company. Yes, you’re in the town centre so the rooms at the front are not the quietest when windows are open in the summer but not a problem for us. A big shout out to Jade who was both very efficient and friendly despite being under some pressure! Very well cooked breakfast too

We really enjoyed our meal last night. We sat out in the open air at the back of the Hotel's carriage area. The menu was very varied and had several interesting vegetarian options. We enjoyed the Risotto and the Hasselback beetroot mains and several lovely desserts. It was a real surprise but a good one.

Stayed here on our way to Plymouth, staff were very friendly and helpful. We had dinner there which was excellent I had the beef pie and my wife had the lamb. Would highly recommend, the hotel itself is an old coaching Inn. Rooms were clean and quite big . My only gripe was personally I found the bed a little soft and our room was outside the kitchen extractor fans but good value. However would definitely be back for the food

Revisiting my hometown with my partner after years away! Perfect location in the centre of the market place, easy transport links and all the shops/bars nearby. Rooms are very old and squeaky but clean and tidy, it all adds to the character of this rustic inn. Price for a four poster bed on a Thursday/Friday in June was more than reasonably. Breakfast included but it was the only letdown of the stay, lots of strange tastes. Much better to head in to town to Brogans!

Have an annoying habit of not hearing "small portion" for the fish n chips. So you're given & charged for a large portion. Always put a biscuit in your saucer even though you've stated "I have Coeliac disease and require a gluten free diet" . On sending this back you're then left without a saucer!

This is the second time we have stayed here so that says it all. This is a hotel with a lot of history and character. We recognised many of the staff from our first stay a couple of years ago which again says a lot. The staff there appear very happy to be working there which spills over to the guests. Our room was great, the breakfast was lovely and the hotel location superb. However above all the team, without exception, were extremely pleasant, helpful and friendly. We will definitely go back for a third time.

The roast was cold when it came out and the potatoes tasted reheated as they were very hollow and genuinely difficult to eat. The Yorkshire was also rock solid, parsnips burnt to a crisp and when I pored my gravy a layer slipped off the top before the rest poured out which immediately put me off. I also ordered chicken which was meant to come with stuffing and never did. One girl recognized I didn’t enjoy my meal and took it off the bill which was appreciated but all other staff seemed very miserable and not friendly at all and it took a long time whenever we needed staff ie collect plates, ask for deserts, needing refills, the bill etc. Considering I took my mum and her partner here for Mother’s Day I was so disappointed and probably wouldn’t return

Came for a Christmas party in the ballroom. The tables were very cramped in and heating was broken so the entire room was like and oven! Starters were sat around in the other room from when we entered until when they were served an hour later so who knows how long they sat around! The pate came with ‘toast’ but as it had been sat around, it was cold, rock hard toast that was also somehow chewy and made your jaw click. Would’ve been better just served with bread if they weren’t going to toast it just before you eat. The potted crayfish was congealed and both looked and tasted awful - we gave up eating that for fear of food poisioning. The roast dinner was next and was nearly inedible, the Turkey was dry and the potatoes looked as if they had been cooked a previous day and microwaved. They were soggy and not crispy and cold in the middle. The stuffing balls were raw. The only good part of the main was the vegetables (which were just bland veggies so I filled up on them as you couldn’t eat the rest). Looking around the room when the staff cleared, it looked like most people left the potatoes. The dessert on the other hand was very nice, I think the fact that it didn’t require cooking (or chucking through the microwave) really helped and it was the best part of the meal. The rest of the night was okay - dancing with friends (dj isn’t great but if you put lots of requests in then the choice of music is much better and more cheesy disco tunes). Overall, it’s really not worth paying the money for. Very overpriced for a shockingly bad meal. If I were in a restaurant, it would’ve sent back to the kitchen (although in a restaurant, I’m not a chef would have the audacity to send a meal like that out).

Delightful staff and setting in this cosy hotel, bar and restaurant in the centre of Devizes. We were staying elsewhere in the town but dropped in at The Bear for a n early evening drink. Atmosphere and service were lovely. We decided to stay for an evening meal. The menu was varied and offered both standard “pub” favourites as well as other mains alternatives but more appealing was definitely the value compared to other nearby establishments! Between us we had starters of smoked salmon served with orange, beetroot and apple - delicious and a yummy chicken terrine served with toasted sourdough. Mains of pub favourite pie & mash which came accompanied by a good sized portion of buttered fresh veg. A hopefully less calorific choice of Greek salad with chicken slouvaki came served very generously and thoroughly enjoyed. No room for desserts but including wine, very content with a bill of £62. Staff deserved the above 10% gratuity we added. Swift service, chatty and charming waitresses and polite, helpful bar staff. Highly recommend!

Asked if window could be opened as very stuffy. Window remained shut. On paying at the bar the same staff member was chewing something. Not what I'm used to experiencing from the Bear

Good hearty food off high quality. One of those meals where their didn’t seem too much on the plate but with quality ingredients we were both full and my wife took the rest home in a box for later. I have been to the Bear for many years, used to meet up with my parents there, it’s now looking dated and the staff always look so stressed out. They never look like they want to be there serving, always distracted by another task. The only thing I feel that has kept up with the times is the prices cuz it isn’t cheap at all. I have had many Sunday Lunches and to be honest the last 3 or 4 have been really disappointing, hard roasted potatoes, cold veg and tiny portions. I’m not a greedy eater but sometime you feel the chef has been caught sleeping! One evening we popped in for dinner, all we heard was the chef moaning and swearing. Deff not managed as it should be and for god sake DECORATE! It looks like it hasn’t been roaches since the 1970s Chipped paint and cables everywhere, broken skirting and roughly paint walls. This is NOT a classy place anymore and needs a refurbishment desperately. Sadly we always look forward to go there as we have many good memories there, sadly we always feel disappointed when leaving. Such a shame that it hasn’t been cared for years. It has a 3 star rating in booking dot com but if the restaurant is anything to go by lately I would give it 2stars. I like to give positive feedback but sadly I have none for The Bear.

Your memory can be a harsh mistress. I'd spent the last two Christmas' alone and having sold my business and retired, I decided to invest in a small family Christmas at the Bear. I booked, somewhat excitedly in August. Envisaging quiet chats in comfy sofas - they had been there - plenty of space for us to catch up. Alas no more, it's a food factory, those well-recalled areas are function rooms and with the bar heaving - as it should be - there was nowhere for residents to, just be. Goodness knows what had happened to The Lambton Room, once such a dignified dining room, now institutional in the worst way. On Christmas morning breakfast was served between 7-9 by a solitary waitress, serving a full house, everything about it was sad. Our names had been marked off for the second sitting for Celebratory Christmas Lunch but a table was found and sadly the joke, I had made about them not running out of food, came back to haunt me. I've eaten more generous Christmas Dinners at Sainsbury's Cafe. A couple of very meagre slices of institutional turkey and roast potatoes that were easy to ignore, combined with tight portion control, the food factory was without doubt profitable. We asked to take out coffee in the bar, which was being set up for the staff to watch films. We were intruding, the hotel was effectively non-operational until Boxing Day Breakfast, different waitress but even sadder. The hard-boiled poached eggs just about finished me off. I've been a Wadworths Woman forever - it seems - we drank 6X from the keg at my wedding, possibly that was a sign, as now I'm divorced. Your loves lose you in the end, by serving themselves.

Just to add ........ as we were staying, breakfast this morning was also very very good. Only complaint, there was no breakfast fruit in a bowl. I don't want a banana or an orange.

Went for a beer and Sunday lunch. Pub looked very nice from outside and service was good. Butcombe Gold was the ale. Ordered two Sunday roasts.. beef (£16 each). The food came out quite quick and looked good but the beef was poor. It was very chewy and extremely fatty. All veg, Yorkies and gravy was good though. Waitress spoke to us after the meal and asked if all was okay. We said yes, except for the beef as you can see, most of it has been left .. it is very chewy and mainly fat. She apologised and that was it. Sorry to say, but will not be returning.
