First visit here. Lovely ‘proper’ pub with lots of history. Greeted warmly upon arrival and drinks brought to our table. Got the steak and ale pie with veg and mash. Absolutely delicious and home cooked, no microwave meals here. Dessert was ginger pudding which was knockout. Staff were all lovely and we were made welcome. I told them we would be back and we will. It was excellent.

My husband and I called here for a lunch time meal. We have been here several times before. Staff were really helpful, food was excellent with a large choice as well as daily options.

Lovely pub, food really good, service really good, thugs in outside drinking area snorting coke from the table very nice. Not the best thing for my young children to see while eating. Won't be back, horrible people

Came for food with friends. I ordered the chicken Kiev. Omg never ever again would I order that. They must drop it in the fryer with the oil that fish is cooked in. that is all I could taste. The salad soggy, coleslaw big chunk where you could not chew and certainly not give to a child or granny. Staff are more concerned looking on phone that checking on tables when people are eating, not even checking on no one.

Quality of food was first class. I had an excellent mixed grill and her indoors had a burger. Good portions and excellent service. Would definitely recommend. Reasonably priced for the quality. Will return.

Food was lovely, Staff friendly and very helpful, only problem was at the bar regulars crowded around the bar most of them vaping and making it almost impossible to get served for drinks after our lovely meal, one of them blew vape all over my neck whilst I was trying to wade my way to the bar then when i finally got served another blew vape directly over my drinks, I took the drinks to the table and we were unable to drink them because of what happened it was disgusting, we did return a few days later thinking this was one off but again the vaping at the bar was worse on our return visit. Surely its not much to ask for them to go outside ? sadly we will not be returning.

Lovely pub with lovely food, go every week and never had a poor meal. Lovey staff who offer good service, dog friendly pub which is a bonus . Never disappointed with food, drinks or service .

We decided to visit to try the £15 set menu, we booked for 7.30 on Monday. Always a warm welcome. The staff couldn’t be nicer. My partner ate off the set menu, he opted for the garlic mushrooms, seafood linguine & chocolate fudge, unbelievable that it’s only £15, great value. He had no complaints absolutely loved the lot. I went for the Thai fish cakes, I above these, had them a few times & for my main the lasagna, salad & garlic, it was lovely. My only one complaint is that they need some large wine glasses, we went on Sunday & again on Monday night for food & I got my wine in a tumbler glass. Will always return because the food, atmosphere & staff are lovely. So lucky to have this pub local to us

What a lovely friendly pub this is we arrived late for the quiz but we took part in the lovely atmosphere we got 8 out of 10 on the music quiz but what a fun night the 2 barmaids were so helpful and nothing the bother to these 2 proper old school barmaids would deffo come again had a really good night

Great service as always and home cooked tasty food.Table book for 1pm but arrived earlier and was told to go to table In restaurant.Drinks ordered and when they arrived we ordered our food.Mmmmm home cooked chips definitely not frozen like the majority of establishments these days .All food cooked to perfection,couldn’t fault it even piping hot.Well done to all

My family go here most weekends so I was very excited to try out their Sunday lunch! It definitely went above my expectations - staff are friendly, pub itself is lovely, and the food is the best. It's also nice that the kitchen are flexible with switching items in/out and the size of your portion (I will be getting the 1/2 sunday roast from now on!)

Went for Sunday dinner the first dinner was cold then they came back with the same dinner that had been put in the microwave so sent that back again for them to come with another dinner which was hot but found something rock hard I’m my mash potato really disappointed because I really like there dinners

We booked for Sunday dinner really last minute last Sunday. We’ve been to the pub before for the normal menu but never for the Sunday dinner. I had gammon and beef and my partner had pork and gammon, both were beautiful and massive! Will be back

First time here and won't be the last, Sunday lunch was absolutely beautiful , the staff were top drawer, very quick with the food and very pleasant. 10/10 for me on this one .

Was booked in for Mothers day with my daughter however she was unwell and we were unable to attend. Contacted the staff at The Shipwrights who were absolutely fine with our cancelling at short notice. We asked them if they could supply us with a take away Sunday Lunch instead since we were not able to attend. They did so without any hassle at all and we collected our food within the hour. Food was warm and absolutely delicious, I was expecting it to have lost some of its heat and flavour however it didn't. Thoroughly enjoyed our food albeit we lost the joy of going out but it certainly didn't disappoint us.

Been here before was ok however tonight's wasn't good ordered wish and chips what came was over cooked small portion verging on a kis meal complementary burned chip and a black bit from the fryer

Quaint hotel at riverside, had fish n chips from main menu, OH had mince and dumplings. waited around 20 mins for food, quite acceptable for fresh cooked fish n chips - no frozen chips here, great nice fat wedges of chips all home cooked. Batter on the fish was crispy and fish flaky, a perfect match. Mince and dumplings came with mashed potato and fresh veg, great taste and the dumpling was stunning, could have ate this on its own it was so big - cannot recommend this place enough, great little venue with fantastic friendly staff Great value for money, didnt eat anything else all day!

I’ve been here a couple of times for food and it’s good old fashioned hearty pub grub. They do a great Chicken Kiev. Today I had Sunday lunch and it was fantastic. Huge portions and so tasty. If there’s a better pub for Sunday lunch in Sunderland I’d like to hear about it!

While visiting family in the area, and after recommendation from friends, we called to book a table.Not realizing it was steak night, we were told they were busy and could only accommodate us later than we planned. We accepted the booking and were pleasantly surprised to later receive a call to say that our table was ready earlier… A nice touch.We were seated in the bar area, which was spacious, and we felt very Covid safe.Dinners on the next table were having the steak night special, and seeing their food, sold it to us.The starter soup was very tasty and the steak main course was plentiful. Large portion, delicious home made chips, however we asked for medium rare and the steaks were well done. BUT they were so tender than we ate them without a moan.After dinner, we took our drinks outside and finished them chatting to the family who were infact sitting next to us inside. A lovely end to a perfect meal.If we are in the area again, will be sure to visit and try the Sunday roast.

Had black pudding mash for starters wife had king prawns. We swapped as they were chilli fire. Probs the best prawns av tasted. Black pudding mash was unreal with peppercorn sauce. I had lamb shank n mash which litterely came off the bone. Wife had steak which was literally melt in the mouth. . Not just saying this. Was best meal had in a long time. Service fantastic. So friendly. Loved it

The Food here is second to none. The quality of Customer Service, beers and wines are excellent. The Menu and Specials Board is Varied to the point it's easy to think you're in a restaurant and not a pub. Staff are not bad either.

I went to try Sunday lunch, the staff are very helpful, my order was taken speedily and our meal cam within 5 minutes which was very good, unfortunately the meal was disappointing, large plates that had to much on, no room to even cut anything, the potato's were like wallpaper past and not very nice the turnip was cold the carrots some were cooked to death and some were half cooked, the lamb was very good but the Yorkshire pudding was not crispy but soggy soft and nit very appetising, If the plate was not pilled up so much and had better veg it would be an improvement, if you dont mine the quality and would prefer quantity with plate full that I noticed all went beck with food on, hten this is the place for you.

We went for the first time to meet friends as we had to bring Charlie the dog with us. We were greeted by friendly knowledgeable staff who fussed over Charlie. The food was delicious even my eldest daughter who can be fussy at times said she wants to come back. Really nice casual dining and friendly atmosphere.

I have been working in the area and this place was recommended by another bar. I am so glad we came here! The staff and customers are so friendly,you are made to feel welcome as you walk through the door. Vivienne is so helpfull and friendly and the waiting staff are very attentive and polite. Then we have the food. WOW WOW WOW does not cover it!!! I have never had such good,tastey filling food. I might have said the same on other reviews but this place blows them out of the water!!! Been here on several occasions during the week for lunch but first time for Sunday roast dinner. Lamb for me and beef for my wife both meats great portions perfect and tender. The veg are obviously fresh and really tasty. How the chef gets the Yorkshire puddings so huge is beyond me. The staff are very attentive and pleasant. The seating is very comfortable with surroundings from a historic era. Unfortunately I didn’t have my phone to take a photo of the meal maybe next time

Good little pub off the beaten track . Also serves food although we have never ate here . Good range of ales . Worth a visit but a car is needed as it is a bit of a hike unless you are on the doorstep

What a refreshing change. Great Staff, Great Atmosphere and Great Food at a very reasonable price. The beer is kept well and the range of other drinks is very good. Never disappointed and now Winter is here the log fire makes thebar vrry cosy.

Large tasty portions with lots of meat and thick gravy - just what you need on a cold Sunday. Service was great in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Only negative was no sticky toffee pudding but the treacle sponge was a good alternative. 6 dinners, 4 sweets, 5 soft drinks and 3 pints of Caffreys £85. We'll certainly be back.

I went to the shipwrights with my mam on a Saturday night. We shared chicken liver parfait and I had a rump steak. My mam had Italian chicken melt - we couldn't fit in a desert as we were so stuffed! The food was delicious, staff friendly and attentive, amazing value for money. Homemade chips and coleslaw! There is a lot of choice and the setting is cosy and friendly. Just to mention the great toilet facilities - clean, soap, great dryer or tissues. Would highly recommend and will certainly be visiting again when in Sunderland.

I've eaten several times at the Shipwrights and the food and service has always been excellent but on this visit we went for Sunday lunch and were very disappointed, the food was excellent but the small amount of turkey I had on my plate was shocking. I thought the rest of my turkey was under my potatoe and when it wasn't I ask the waitress if that was all the turkey you served on a Sunday lunch, she reply it was but would check with the chef, she return to say that was their standard issue and I would not be getting any more. I had not even eaten half of my meal and had run out of Turkey, so I left the rest and waited for my wife, who had the lamb which was an ample portion, to finish. The food is always excellent but I would not eat Sunday lunch here again.

Visited here at 3pm for Sunday lunch and it was probably the best Sunday lunch Iv had in years! I had the beef and turkey while my husband had the lamb and turkey and both were fantastic, followed by a dime bar cake with cream! Great atmosphere and the best service ever.. First time visit to this lovely old bar. Beautiful original and surprisingly big inside. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming from the moment we arrived. The service was excellent and very quick. The Sunday dinner was plentiful and tasty and very traditional. Wasn’t keen on the music but will definitely be back.

Nice pub that serves food right on the river wear. Service was nice and quick. Good assortment of dishes on the menu. Prices about the same as most pubs. Food was nice, well presented but nothing special. I would visit again.

As a member of a group of men of a certain age, we meet up once a week or so and visit a restaurant or pub for an early evening meal and a chat. Our last visit was to the Shipwrights. A smashing pub old fashioned place with loads of atmosphere. A warm welcome, an extensive menu and great food. The portion size is amazing. Try the fish and chips or the steak pie.

The food is excellent. Really great value for money. Steak night for two with starter only £21.95 and a free glass of wine. Been a few times in the last month or so, same excellent standard. Would highly recommend a visit.

Always get told how lovely the Sunday lunches are, so decided to to go to try it out. We weren't disappointed at all. I had roast beef, roast potatoes, mash, yorkshire pudding, vegetables, and lashings of gravy. I cant believe it has taken me so long to visit here, and I will be going back very soon.

We were struggling to decide what to have and found the shipwrights on Google. (it's not actually far from home but we forgot it was there). I had mince and dumplings and the other half had hunters chicken. Portions were huge and the food was beautiful. We will deffo be back!

This pub / restaurant never fails to please. The food is hot very well cooked tasty and reasonably priced. There is a bar area where dogs are allowed and another area through the back if you prefer no dogs. The John smiths beer is perfect.

Hi. Just like to say that the Ship Wrights restaurant is a fantastic place,Amazing food, nice warm atmosphere,very dog friendly ,the staff are brilliant ,can't do enough to help ,Sunday. Lunches are delicious,best to book as very busy on weekends excellent menu choice,we took our dog and we were made very welcome we sat in the bar and the dog even had his own meal they brought him treats and munchies,that for me was brilliant.price wise very reasonable and the food is is excellent. Have been several times and every time we visit we are greated with a warm welcome .I can highly recommend this place especially for dog lovers.

Popped in after seeing the pub from south of the wear. Dog friendly and the best chips I have had in a long time. Loved the Scampi and Chips and my girlfriend and dog enjoy the burger. Huge portions Highly recommend

Our first visit here for lunch today and it certainly won't be our last! Good variety to choose from on the menu. As ladies of a certain age we chose from the senior citizens menu. Lovely roast dinner with all the trimmings, scampi and chips and fish and chips. Portions just the right size. Only one of use could manage a desert....ginger pudding and custard again just the right size and delicious. One course £5.95.....perfect. Definitely a place to try.

we went to the shipwrights, we rang just before we went to book a table. plenty of parking. we went into the lovely quaint old pub. very nicely decorated. staff were straight over to take drinks orders. I ordered the lamb Sunday lunch which was delicious. lovely slices of tasty lamb. huge Yorkshire pudding and mash and roast potatoes and veg. huge portions. nicely presented. and a reasonable price for food.

Plain and simply the best Sunday Lunch in the Northeast. We travel from Teesside to this pub the food is that good. Book early but trust me you won’t be disappointed.

Went tonight for a family meal, we ordered starters which were fine. When the mains came they were ok, but when the Vegetables came you could smell that they were off. We got 5 bowls of carrots - Broccoli and Turnip. We tasted the carrots they tasted like they had fermented. Did t taste the broccoli. Tasted the turnip it was disgusting. My daughter - in law had already mashed some of the vegetables to gave to our grandson who is only one.
