The Ship Inn & Waterfront Restaurant in Dundee City

Absolutely fabulous. Arrived when the the kitchen was going to close in 5 minute's but the chef still cooked the best ever fish and chips. Huge portion, home cooked chips, lovely fat ones, gorgeous fish and salad.

First time visit to Broughty Ferry and The Ship Inn. Arrived at noon for lunch without a reservation but the lovely waitresses said it wasn't a problem. Just over £50 for a shared starter, two mains, two alcohol drinks followed by two coffees. Too full for dessert as food portions were huge 😊. Will definitely return and highly recommend to other first time visitors 👍

Chicken fajitas, The chicken was like rubber. Macaroni and cheese extremely salted, told the waitress and got no response.

Enjoyed a fantastic meal en-route from Aberdeen to Edinburgh. Sat upstairs with sea views, warm atmosphere, friendly attentive service. Food options were plentiful and exquisitely presented. Highly recommended!

Last minute decision to try here for dinner in the restaurant. Went in at 6:45pm on a wet and windy February night and the restaurant was full but the staff were great and offered us a table around 7:30 so we took a drink in the bar while we waited. A good atmosphere in a ‘proper pub’ and the atmosphere in the restaurant was also good with a busy ‘buzz’. The food was great, as was the service. Great value for money with very generous portions. Mrs D started with black pudding fritters (big enough to pass for a main course in many places) followed by Goats Cheese Nut Roast and I started with Cullen Skink followed by a braised blade of beef from the specials menu. All were delicious, coupled with a very reasonably priced bottle of decent Sauvignon Blanc. Bottom line, well worth a try but pre-book to make sure you don’t miss out.

GRAN DECEPCIÓN. El personal no tenía esperanza. Se nos muestra a la mesa y la camarera se fue. Cuando vino a tomar el menú de bebidas parecía que era un esfuerzo. Hemos estado aquí un par de veces antes cuando nos alojamos en Broughty Ferry, pero no volveremos. Había una luz de té quemada en un plato en nuestra mesa y los de ambos lados. Demasiado esfuerzo para reemplazar y poner. Todo parecía un esfuerzo para ser honesto. La comida estaba bien para ser justos. Todavía esperando a que me pregunten si todo estaba bien. Definitivamente bajaron colina desde el año pasado. No volveré.

Love this place, visit frequently and never let down yet. Go visit!

The food was okay, all dumped on your plate, with extra not asked for. Chips were dry, and fish cakes were okay.

La cocción de la comida aquí realmente se ha vuelto bastante pobre, muchos de nosotros pedimos el pescado que estaba completamente nadando en aceite, se podía ver que la masa se había manchado de amarillo, lo que lo hizo bastante vil para comer. Claramente no se fríe lo suficiente a fuego alto. Dos entrantes nunca vinieron y el hombre que estaba trabajando allí era increíblemente grosero, como si cometieran errores era alguien un problema debido al hecho de que estaban ocupados. Su colega de trabajo también tuvo una experiencia similar recientemente.

Almuerzo familiar el sábado , la bienvenida fue abrumadora , y se hizo sentir como si fuéramos un estorbo . Habíamos preordenado, las porciones eran grandes pero la calidad de la comida no era la esperada, de hecho extremadamente pobre , casi cruda vegetariana, patatas fritas secas calentadas y el vientre de cerdo nadando en grasa. Ni una sola vez preguntó el personal si estábamos disfrutando de nuestra comida. La primera vez aquí y sin duda será la última.

Excellent service. The pint i was poured was off. Without hesitation and no questions asked, it was immediately replaced. The mark of an establishment is when they handle well when something goes wrong, not just smiling when things go right. That's easy. Excellent.

Christmas menu but that was not an excuse for poor quality meals, several of us had the turkey which came with all the trimmings and bowls of veg for the table. I had venison lasagne, a big dish full and came with chips and salad. My pudding was a butterscotch and whisky bombe, I have a mild dairy intolerance and had forgotten to say no cream, as the preorder was a few weeks back. The waitress could not have been lovelier and offered a fresh pud without cream, but I was fine with it just being transferred to another bowl without the generous puddle of cream. Everyone enjoyed the meal and portions were enough to satisfy the hungriest.

Fantastic wee pub with sublime scran, portion sizes were fantastic and definitely a great spot for lunch! The staff were really friendly and will be checking out this spot in the future!

Any time I come back to Broughty Ferry I always make sure I book a table at the Ship Inn. Great food, service and views over the Tay.

as good as was when we lived here 30 years ago…if on Dundee take a trip out well worth it (and there’s the award winning fish tavern next door ! what’s not to like?)

Great setting, lovely view of the Tay, always been one of my favourite pubs. However, they have disgraceful customer service. Don’t mention it on social media though; they block you.

Just popped in for drinks, always great. Update 24th September 2024: Food was poor. The lasagna was basically mince, and pasta and cheese had no sauce tomato or herbs. Cullen Skink had hard potatoes. Fish pie would have been better with less cheese. I was disappointed as it usually was good.

Lovely old fashioned pub at the side of the river Tay with a restaurant upstairs with nice views over the Tay.

Would definitely recommend this place as all the meals we had were amazing. They were hot, plentiful and delicious. The service was great and the food was reasonably priced which makes a change nowadays.

Really good pub worth a beer if in the ferry

Fantastic Food served last night when there with Friends Everyone thoroughly enjoyed there food My Lasagne was the best I have ever tasted So much so that a fellow diner actually fainted. Obviously the restaurant wine 🍷 was just as good as my lasagne. I highly recommend this Restaurant / Bar Will definitely be back Great work guys

May 21, 2024 We had reserved, 5 people, 1 child and 1 dog. The lady at the bar wasn't happy when we showed up. She was impatient, rude and ate the wrong food because she wasn't listening properly. We had cullen skink, fish & chips and fish pie. We really enjoyed everything. We were really happy about that. Kudos to the chef. Thank you very much

Fabulous location on the riverside. The pub scene in Broughty Ferry is very vibrant and The Ship is very much part of it! It was well supported by customers on my Saturday night visit. The Orkney - Corncrake was in top condition. This place is a must if you get the chance to visit, I will if I'm in the area!! Cheers 🍻

Friendly welcoming helpful staff on hand, in lovely surroundings in a great setting to present good quality food. Oh, and they really do get top marks for their bar service. A delight.

Oh, you won't believe how much I adored this place! I couldn't stop myself from visiting it again and again. And why wouldn't I? The "Fresh Scottish Mussels" were an absolute delight and the beautiful Tay in the background made it all the more special. I've also tried other dishes here like crab cakes and Cullen Skink, and let me tell you, they were beyond satisfactory! The service was nothing short of amazing, and Lynn deserves a special mention for being so friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. If you're ravenously hungry, I suggest you go for a starter because the main dish might take a while, but trust me, it's worth the wait. And you know what? You simply can't visit Broughty Ferry without checking out The Ship Inn!!!

A lovely building dating back to 1847 right on the waterfront. Upstairs is a superb restaurant with a very good menu. Our meals were excellent with a bonus being that I was able to have a decent cask ale with my meal. Make sure you book though as the times on their website are not accurate. We went in one time at 8-10pm to be told that the kitchen was closed although the website says 9-30pm! The bar downstairs is comfortable with a choice of ales.

We booked here for Saturday 2nd of March , we arrived and they made out we hadn’t booked it , the man was very rude if we hadn’t booked why would we say we did .

Bitterly disappointed. Love Broughty Ferry and love the Ship. Tried calling to reserve a table three times but nobody picked up Came in tonight to see if any available tables but told they to busy. I asked why I couldn't book over the phone as nobody answering. I yet again was told to busy. I am puzzled how the were full when they only take phone or walk in reservation.... 2nd visit in this wonderful place. Great food, excellent service and amazing view. Portions are really big and the prices more than reasonable. Cullen skink was really amazing, fish pie also delicious (my wife loved it) and fish & chips was very nice. Couldn't ask for something more.

Lovely, traditional pub,with a restaurant upstairs. The restaurant isn't very big, so make sure that you book, but the food is lovely and they had a proper beer on which made my partner very happy. The staff were really pleasant and efficient and it's quite reasonably priced. After we ate, we went downstairs into the pub,which was very traditional and also had a beer on,although it was really quiet. Definitely worth a visit.

Used to come here regularly and it was always something to really look forward to but the our last visit was disappointing, especially after bringing friends for their first experience. We had two servers during our stay, one was very nice and helpful, while the other made us feel like we were an inconvenience to her being there. All starters were good and served in a decent time. The mains weren't very impressive. The seafood pie (Special) was very poor, the fish felt as if it was frozen, there was no variety of fish or prawns but just the overwhelming taste of smoked haddock. The white sauce (Béchamel) was so thin and bland, the mash potato topping was lumpy and very watery like the potatoes hadn't been drained and dried enough, totally bland and unseasoned. In the end I only ate half of it. The tempura battered fish was also very bland and lacked any real seasoning or crunch. Desserts were better and tasty, the only criticism was that two of the desserts were served and we had to wait another 15 mins for the next two to be served. I understand that at the weekend a restaurant is going to be busy, and I understand that the restaurant is quite small but the noise in there was so loud which made talking to your dinner guests very difficult. All in all, it was a disappointing experience from what I remember from a few years ago and I doubt I will be booking again any time soon......What a shame.

Excellent restaurant, with friendly staff and tasty food. I had the Fish pie which was so large it could have fed two people with veg on the side. Worth a visit every time when I am in the area and not to be missed.

Chicken & haggis served in small pasta type dish. Made for difficult eating. Veg barely warm and some hard. Very very noisy. Visited previously but this was extremely disappointing.
