If you think you’d enjoy somewhere with excellent food, service and atmosphere and you haven’t been here, get a table booked. The long waiting list for a table (4-5 months at the moment) says a lot. The food really was superb and the info/stories from Lewis on how the dishes were designed before each course helped make for a great evening out. I’ll definitely be going back!

By far the best meal I have ever had. Both the food and the atmosphere were brilliant and the wine was expertly selected. There was never a minute where I felt like I was waiting as the engaging story about each dish flowed naturally to the next dish. I will definitely be booking again.

We visited as two couples - friends - to celebrate and mark the Christmas season. Two of us did the offered menu, two a vegetarian version. Both menus were equally imaginative and original. Upon welcome you have to give the password to gain entry, a welcome drink is given and you are invited down into the seating area. You are able to view the kitchen and also get it visit it later. The 8 course tasting menu and matched wines were all beyond fantastic. Chef patron Lewis comes out to introduce each course and wine and entertains with many stories throughout. An experience that will live long in the memory and one we will look to repeat soon. Also keen to sign up for the coming academy upstairs - a sister venture. #mashboy

The food was exceptional and had lots of taste and flair - well presented and if you like wine pairing there was certainly a lot of variation and choice to complement. There had been a lot of thought that went into the menu. I have given it 4 stars only because of 2 things. It was slightly disappointing when arriving for the only non alcoholic welcome drink to have been cheap orange juice compared to the sparking wine on offer for alcohol drinkers. Also there is a lot of emphasis on the chef doing “story telling” - which each introduction to the next course going on for about 7 minutes throughout the evening with a very annoying chinking of his glass when he wants the customers attention. By the 3rd course (of which there were 8) it got a little bit wearing. However that is the vibe and as long as you know that’s the format of the evening then I guess that’s ok.

We visited the Secret Supper Club at The Howff in Dundee after a recommendation from a friend. What an incredible experience it turned out to be, an 8 course tasting dinner for only 20 people held in a 'secret' location, on selected dates through the year. Not only was every dish absolutely delicious but the experience was made all the greater by the team that create it, all second to none in their friendly, charming, professionalism. Lewis and John have created a wonderful restaurant which feels very special and exclusive without being pretentious, absolutely worth every penny. Be prepared to book well ahead as they are booked out for several months in advance.

I had wanted to try The Howff for a long time so when we recieved a voucher as a wedding gift was so chuffed. What a unique experience it was! We've been to restaurants all over the world and never experienced a night like this. It was phenomenal. Every part is well thought out from the secret password, to being greeted with drinks , down to the chef talking between courses which we found very different and entertaining. The food was incredible and the service was too. All of the staff were wonderful. I was worried with it being fine dining we might have left hungry as some places you do experience that but we left feeling very satisfied. I loved the wine flight too. We enjoyed the fact each course was spaced out by the chef talking which made the evening that bit longer and meant you weren't rushing your meal. 10/10. Can't wait to return!

Wonderful experience, great to get so close to the Chefs and their thoughts on the food and wine on offer. The menu had some interesting combinations, that tasted amazing. Wine flight really enhanced the food. To have scored a 5 from us I suggest that the dining room could have done with being a bit warmer, there was a fireplace with logs but it was unlit. I think that would have added to the atmosphere. Also some of the dishes could have benefited from being served on warm plates. However we’ve booked again for summertime.

Went for the first time January 2021 and me and my partner absolutely loved it. Although we moved down to England when we were thinking about what to do to celebrate our 5 year anniversary it was a no brainier and we booked our table. Travelled up just for the occasion and it was so worth it, amazing food and such a great experience to be taken through the thought process and stories behind the dishes, the name and wine pairings. Attached a picture of my favourite dish of the night, a hard pick out of so many delicious courses though! Thanks again for such a lovely anniversary dinner, can’t wait to go back again!

If you are reading this and you've not booked - GO! If you've been, you already know this is one of the best restaurants in Dundee, in fact, one of the best in Scotland. Been a couple of times to this amazing eatery which has been fully booked since it was opened a couple of years back. Situated in Dundee centre, hidden beneath a cooking academy, we duly uttered the pre-arrange password and were sent downstairs to the most lovely intimate dining area. As you arrive you pass by the gleaming kitchen and are welcomed with a glass of fizz. Shown to our table once our jackets had been hung up, we perused the menu - a tasting menu of some 8 courses using all locally sourced produce and a fair bit of local foraging. Without going into the minutia of each dish, just to say that each one was fabulous. The creativity and flavour sensations from each dish are sublime, that they discovered birch branches when smoked gives a pink grapefruit flavour tells you that these guys know their onions from their shallots! Chef / Owner Lewis comes out before each dish to describe what it is you are eating, accompanied by anecdotes some of which are personal and some of which are restaurant / food related, but they all add something to the night and it is far more interactive than any other restaurant I've been to, but not in a tacky / forced way, just engaging with fellow diners all enjoying a wonderful shared experience. A mention too for their wine supplier who pairs each dish to a particular wine, some rosé, some orange, some white, some red - from regions far and wide and with great thought put into how each wine will compliment the food. The creativity is not purely on the food. Lastly, without thinking I am Scotland's top food critic, I've gone to the trouble of eating in each of the Michelin starred restaurants in our fine nation, all of which offer wonderful food and wine pairings. I would rate The Howff, on their food, on their wine and on the entire experience as easily on a par with most of the other award winning restaurants, and in many cases far ahead. No dress code, no overly fussy service, no white linen table cloths needed for this establishment, just creative, beautiful and delicious food served in a very Scottish convivial (and secret) setting. Can't wait to go back, although will have to as they are sold out for the next 2 months !

What was supposed to be a birthday “fine dining” experience turned out to be a 4-hour marathon of microscopic tiny snacks that dragged all night sat on the most uncomfortable wooden cafe-style chairs, most certainly not 4-5 hour friendly. Prepare yourself to have dinner before you arrive there and to pay £50 for an £8.52 bottle of screw-top Chilean wine (I googled it) and that was the cheapest available! I had high hopes for this place, but by the time (finally!) the 6th and last savoury course arrived, thinking it was going to be the ultimate in taste and portion, all my high hopes deflated into thin air. It was a tiny, thin slice of beef with a foam on top! I was desperate at that point to chew something. If you placed all 6 courses onto one plate they would barely make up a main course. Add to that, when I asked for a coffee or tea with my dessert I was told they didn’t have them as “nobody ever asks for them”! I find that very hard to believe, but may be because alcohol is pushed at diners so strongly. The ‘wine flight’ was pushed upon us as we entered at £55 per head. Not wanting to mix reds and whites we declined but the pressure was real. I was warned that a bottle of wine wouldn’t be much less in a final attempt to make us purchase it. I wondered at that point what amazing kinds of wine they must be providing, so the reality only added to my disappointment. Sorry but that was my experience. Definitely not worth £160.00 excluding drinks. A lovely meal at any of Dundee’s best restaurants with a bottle of champagne would cost less than we paid here. I had cheese on toast when I got home.

Update: second visit and they had an Austin Powers themed menu. All staff dressed up, we also got dressed up as well. Again, the experience was great, lovely staff. Food was good, but again not Michelin level. They are booked out months in advance, so they are clearly doing something right. If you get the chance, go, you'll not regret it. He says: Small intimate venue, always booked out well in advance. Show up on time and get your choice of seat! The secret password is a bit meh, they have your name after all and you pay 8n advance, but the staff are incredible. It's a tasting menu, so you get what's on the menu, no choices ! Each dish is introduced by the chef with a break during the tasting menu to visit the kitchen and chat to the staff there. Overall, the experience was great. Food was great, but not outstanding. I've had better, but only at Michelin star restaurants! I'd definitely go again. She says: I loved this whole experience, including the secret password!! Staff were engaging, funny and dedicated. I loved all of the savoury courses, desert looked great but not sure it lived up to the rest. I feel like we are being picky though in critiquing the food as I would hands down go here again and again for a wonderful evening.

We have just had our first experience at the Secret Supper Club and it is by far the best meal we have had. Service was excellent, we were entertained and informed about each course, and learned a lot! Knock out plate after knock out plate of an 8 course menu with paired wine (for me). Our bites kept getting smaller as we didn’t want each course to end. I’m fairly sure they didn’t need to wash my plates as they were licked clean. (I expect they washed them anyway ;0). We’re not food snobs by any stretch but have been lucky enough to experience Michelin star(s) tasting menus a few times and they have all been fabulous. This gang topped the lot.

We went to The Howff last night - not sure exactly what to expect, but we’re blown away. The food was amazing. The whole evening was perfect from start to finish, the description of each course before it was served was interesting and entertaining, wine pairings were great and service was fabulous. A bit of a trek from Edinburgh, but well worth it. We will be back! Keep up the good work

What a place! These guys only open 16 months and already voted best fine dining in Dundee, and it's easy to see how - from stunning food, and every dish has a back story, served in a secret club where you need a password to get in, we loved every minute of the evening. Our only observation was that for us the wine list perhaps didn't have a great selection (although it was good to try something different in the wine flight), but that is just personal choice and may develop over time - the meal itself was stunning. We ate at Tommy Banks in York the weekend after, and the meal we had at Howff blew that meal out of the water - keep doing what you're doing, it's brilliant. The Howff team served us great tasting food with flair, theatre and fun - and we were there for over 4.5 hours!! Good portion sizes, and food you want to eat. These lads and lasses deserve every bit of support and accolade - go visit, you won't be disappointed - we will definitely be back :)

By far the best dining experience in Dundee by a country mile. Last night was my (I think 4th) time in 7 months and the aim is to do every menu, as the food, experience, wine, hosting and team at The Howff hit every mark possible. The Harry Potter experience last night was absolutely fantastic and I would recommend everyone give The Howff a go. Simply love it here, thank you so much team, you really have something incredible going on and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to everyone and bring all my family and friends😄

I don't know where to start. This was an experience that went beyond eating and drinking. The ambiance and atmosphere were perfect, as was the welcome. The three chefs were fully engaged in facing the diners and participated in the table service. Each course was introduced and described clearly and interestingly. The banter was entertaining too. The wine was obviously carefully chosen and paired with each of the many courses. Inviting all the diners into the kitchen to look around and meet all the staff was brilliant and added to an already enjoyable evening. This gave us an opportunity to talk to the chefs and the support staff in a natural and relaxed environment. Whilst this is not cheap dining, it is definitely good value for money.

Really expensive for what it was. Food was good, but not great. Nothing special, and for nearly £150 between two people, it was certainly overpriced. Food was very similar to any pub I’ve ever been to, but 4x the price. Presentation was lackluster at best. Overall not bad, but not worth the price!

Like stepping into the past unfortunately. Wanted a nice coffee but it was (genuinely) instant coffee that was used. Pretty run down toilets, and they don't accept card. Such a shame when you'd rather support a small local cafe, but they give you nescafe granules 🙈
