Tailend in Dundee City

Waiting over a hour for 3 fish and chips and a kids meal. Kids eat free apart from being charged almost £5 for a kids bowl of ice cream. Gone for a 5⭐experience to a 1⭐ in a couple of years.

One of the best seafood experiences I’ve had in the uk! My family had the haddock, arboath smoky, salmon and monkfish, and ALL of it was so fresh, and simply prepared, delicious, and fairly priced. Our waitress was also super kind and considerate. Would travel out of my way to return!

Tailend was one of my go to places for a quick bite to eat, however it’s quickly been engulfed in lots of delivery orders and they seem to get more of a priority in regards to the customers actually in-store. It took me 12 minutes to get a large portion of chips. The standard typical chippy usually has you in and out the door within minutes but I guess regardless on how much you order you must wait. I thought considering the other people around me was ordering things that had to be cooked anyways, surely it wouldn’t be unfair to get the smaller order out first and then once everything is ready for the customers with the bigger orders then pull that together? That’s just my opinion but I guess it’s your choice to do it that way. Also ti put the nail in the coffin… the chips taste like onion.

I just went to the St Andrews tail end I was appalled by there shocking behaviour me and my friends went to go and get chips as we arrived there was a young girl giving a nasty look and her co workers were looking at my friend and shaking their heads. this made my friend and us feel uncomfortable. and as we turned to leave their eyes were glued to us. Just know they had something to say will not be visiting again

I had takeaway 5 star plus excellent quality of food and service There is a restaurant downstairs with lift access (ask staff)

St andrews taiilend is very different to dundee. Very disappointing

Had lunch there on Saturday (10/2) while in Dundee visiting daughters at university. What a great experience. The basement restaurant is cosy and welcoming, the staff friendly and prompt, and the food delicious; my Arbroath smokie was perfectly cooked. We enjoyed it so much we lingered over a second bottle of wine before heading to The Phoenix for the rugby. Be sure to eat here.

Fish lovely, chips a bit dry. Can't believe they have the sheer cheek to charge 1.70 for this microscopic portion of curry sauce.

The tastiest fish in town. Although I only visit Dundee once a year, I definitely visit Tailend Dundee - the fish is prepared deliciously, the portions are large, and the service is excellent. Thank you

Sorry no picks, I visited here for lunch today with the wife. They do mussel madness on BBC a Sunday, big bowl of lovely mussels, big bowl of chunky chips, crusty bread and butter and a glass of decent wine for a tenner, it was dynamite 🧨 👌🏻

Best fish and chips in Dundee, the food arrived quickly and was presented in a fashion traditional to fish and chips.... The haddock was crispy, chips golden and crunchy, tartare sauce punchy, peas green 🙂. Yes my picture is of an empty plate and yes it was that good! Coffee was also very good.

Very disappointed. Been here many times and it has been great. However tonight was not a pleasant experience. Restaurant was quiet! Ordered 7 starters however only 6 arrived. Waited patiently for last meal. Did not arrive until test were finished. Sadly same happened for main course!!! Six of us received and finished meal. Meal 7 never arrived nor did the second plate of onion rings. Asked and was told it was a mix up. Asked to speak to person in charge to overhear her saying if they want to speak to me they can come and find me!!!! Told server I was not paying for the late meals. Heard young girl allegedly in charge phoning obviously manager of owner. Outcome was that we did not get charged for the late meals nor our drinks which were all soft drinks. Would not recommend and will not be back. It has certainly lost its credibility and confidence with us. Meal was nothing special either

I was incredibly disappointed with my visit, and it genuinely left myself and the other members of my party feeling frustrated due to number of constant issues we endured throughout the time we spent here. At the very beginning, we made a reservation as we were a party of six. Upon arrival, our table was not ready as other patrons had been seated at our table resulting in them having to be moved, and my family and I having to wait awkwardly while this happened. It wouldn't have been too much of an issue for myself but what made it more annoying was the staff having to go back and forth in a tight corridor and me having to move out their way with not even an excuse me. When we were eventually seated, we required a baby seat and one was provided, however, it had not been cleaned from whomever used it last. The waiter apologised for this and wiped the baby seat down for us. We then were asked what drinks we were having. The majority of the party opted for Coke and the waiter went to arrange this. A moment later, the waiter returned to advise they didn't have coke. Our food arrived, and whilst the majority of it looked and tasted great, the two chicken dishes were served and the chicken looked pink. We notified the waiters and both meals were taken away and replaced. This meant that the party could not enjoy their meal at the same time. It's important to note that the staff were apologetic and comped the drinks and the two meals that were replaced, but overall the experience was really disappointing and I could hear the waiters apologising to other tables for other reasons. It might be they were having a bad night, but I don't think I'll be visiting for a while.

Collection order .. food tasted decent but very very bland no salt or vinegar or sauces which I ordered. Still edible but very tastless

Had fish and chips here previously and they were very good. This time had the Red Thai curry with seafood and it was excellent. My colleague had the burger and he was very happy. Service good and friendly staff 👍🏻🍻

Really excellent place. Being the only chippie in Dundee that serves gluten free options makes it a great and inclusive place. Plus the service is great and the waiters are all lovely.

Very tasty and fresh. I chose grilled Haddock with lemon and herb butter. The others had battered haddock and mushy peas. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Large portions as well.

Nettes Lokal mit verschiedenen Fischgerichten und auch Burgern. Die Karte ist nicht groß aber es ist für jeden etwas dabei. Wir hatten Haddock mit Chilli Onion und Taccos mit Haddock, beides reichlich und gut. Das Lokal ist hübsch eingerichtet und urig, befindet sich im Untergeschoss des Take Aways. Der Service war super und hat uns geholfen bei der Auswahl. Reservierung ist sinnvoll und geht einfach über Google.

A group of us visited here for supper. The staff were attentive and helpful. The menu choices were good. The fried halloumi and the fish and chips were very good.

Not a typical chip shop sit-in meal. No bread and butter on offer. Ambiance affected poorly by live music at volume beyond capacity of the venue. Real shame as the fish and chips were good but the experience was not.

The food was very good value for money, we got the fish taco, halloumi, and the mussels, we were in on the day they do mussel madness and got a portion of mussel, chips and a small glass of wine for only £10, which was a bargain as it was absolutely gorgeous. The fish tacos were extremely fresh and tasty, with the halloumi being done in a gorgeous gluten free batter (on request)! Would recommend!

They have great specials every day of the week. The fish is consistently amazing. We tried the toffee pudding and it was ridiculous! So so so good.

This place is a must-visit if you’re here at Dundee. The fish and chips here has exceeded my expectations. Besides, the staff are really friendly and warm, always ready to assist us when we need anything.

Service okay made a little more training chit were not as hote as fish mabey they were waiting fish because fish was very hot not cheap but where is nowadays.

Took our two Granddaughters here, for an early evening, Sunday treat! The young waitresses, each and every one, were a delight and our Haddock (one Breaded and one Grilled), with Chips, along with the Child Menu Main Courses, were just perfect. We are regulars here and overall, it’s delightful, and not to be missed, when Kids eat Free! A big well done, from us!

Served very tasty fresh haddock in a nice batter. Good crispy chips. Mushy peas were disappointing though - too dry and past their best.

Took my parents for a late lunch, and firstly, note that the lift to the basement restaurant is really useful when mobility isn't great. We were greeted by a really friendly waiter, she looked after us throughout our lunch. The food was excellent, great haddock and chips. Great selection of drinks. Will be back.

The waitresses we're very attentive and lovely, we had 3 plates for £15, however the food was very greasy, dripping in fat and hours after the meal I still feel unwell and haven't eaten anything else for the rest of the day. Unsure what oil was used, but the food shouldn't be soaked in the oil it was cooked in. Portions were amazingly huge for the cost, and coffee was delicious.

Best fish and chips I’ve had in Dundee, both for takeaway and to sit in. Don’t complicate it, haddock supper is the way to go! And definitely worth checking out the home made tartar sauce.

A group of 8 of us and a small baby went to Tailend Dundee on a Saturday evening. We know they do decent food and I also needed reassurance for my Coeliac Disease diet that there wouldn't be cross contamination. This was indeed all fine and the food was really good. Once we'd booked we received a call recommending that the coeliac person choose grilled dishes (not battered) as that was best to avoid cross-contamination, I was re-assured that they knew what they could do to cater to my needs. When we got there they had a lift that my wife (currently in crutches) used to get down to the restaurant. Once seated Harii advised us again on what was best and catered to our every need. My two girls, 6 and 9, were very chatty and Harii took it in her stride and provided great banter for them, and was fantastic at referring back to me to approve some of my girls requests. Would highly recommend Harii and the team at Tailend. Excellent food and a really warm welcoming feel, which for a coeliac can be hard to come by sometimes.

Excellent fish & chips. Down here in the south of England they only take the skin off one side of the fish + in Scotland the fish in fish & chips means haddock, the words are practically synonymous, it's far superior to the cod etc. you get in England. And the haddock here was perfect. That put white colour which shows it was fresh. White wine was a reasonable price. I finished with an espresso, not expecting much but it turned out to be one of the best espressos I've had recently, far superior to most I've had from a fancy barista. Service was very good. Highly recommended!

Fresh succulent haddock, skinless, boneless. Crispy batter. Proper chips, onion rings made from fresh real onion. This is fish and chips that does not disappoint. Eating in looked good,there is also a terrace/garden. But as weather was good we opted to sit by the river. Best I’ve had in a long time.

Best chippy on the east coast. Fish is fresh and was cooked to order. Portions are decent. Not overloaded with chips. Prices are good. We had two fish suppers. Light and crispy. Looking forward to trying out the rest of the menu.

A friendly place with lovely staff serving great food

Went late, just as the kitchen was closing. Nevertheless, the kitchen staff made us a wonderful grilled salmon meal. Fantastic.

Stopped by for dinner on a Friday, we enjoyed the "Fish & Fizz" offer and enjoyed two nothing-less-than-excellent and generously sized dishes of grilled haddock, served with a lemon & herb butter, potatoes (herby for me, fries for my wife), peas and a small salad. The whole accompanied by two flutes of Prosecco wine, a truly winning combination. To complete, one delicious and again generous portion of homemade cheesecake with vanilla ice cream. Combine all the above with the courtesy and availability of the personnel and a rapid service, and you will get the picture of a fully appreciated dinner.

Pretty good fish and chips. Variety of a daily deals. Not much of seafood place you could find in Dundee. The menu is hard to read and the service is a bit confuse. Stuff atmosphere since it is in the basement.

With a coeliac child we always need to think a head and check out eating options. Tailend promised much on their website in terms of GF options up to mentioning separate fryers - but failed to deliver. On enquiring about GF menu options we were met with an almost hostile response - which made me wonder whether they were deliberately misunderstanding the questions my non-white wife was asking, as the white friend who was with us then asked exactly the same question and had the answer straightaway... It took quite a while after being seated to have order taken, which is not great when you have 2 young children and then had to chase to pay the bill. Food was OK (its a chippy with tables after all) but dining 'experience' poor and could not recommend for those with toddlers and definitely NOT for coeliacs.

Service was very slow today in taking our order although the food arrived in 15 mins from placing the order. The food (standard breaded haddock & chips, garlic & chilli prawns & chips) was fair. The haddock was fresh & good quality. The prawns were beautifully cooked but there was no chilli hit. Chips lacked flavour. The restaurant is in a basement where the acoustics bounce round hard walls so it can be noisy. The background music of wailing solo artists contributes to a disappointing atmosphere.

Fantastic! Went for lunch with our two children (both under 3) and the whole experience was absolutely fabulous. The food was exceptional, the staff were incredibly friendly and they made the whole experience so enjoyable. Can't recommend highly enough!

Went to the restaurant - great, fresh seafood. The oysters are the best I've had and so cheap at £1 each. I also highly recommend the Arbroath smokie and the Thai red curry

Just got home with a takeaway, ordered here to try the gluten free haddock supper and gluten free haddock goujons. Absolutely awful, masses of greasy batter and can't find the fish!! It's like it's disintegrated in the fryer, just a few flakes here and there. Always keen to try new gluten free takeaways, so disappointing when it turns out like this.

Excellent food with friendly service , wish they had windows ! Absolutely delicious fresh fish prepared nicely, very tasty. We had prawn starters - excellent and grilled monkfish - exceptional and their signature haddock fish and chips . All very good. We would recommend and go back !

I was horrified what was served up! It was supposed to be a fish supper. Was served 3 slithers of breaded scraps ! Absolutely no fish at all. I would not even feed my cat the tail ends of fish we got tonight. The service was good, chefs need some lessons in the kitchen. Management need to do something. No way would that have been served up in the deep sea!! No wonder the place is not busy!!!!

Had good food in the past, tonight's (a Friday) service was terrible, good overcooked, not the usual standard, hopefully just a busy night on the fryers.

Bad experience at Tail End last night. Service was very poor. Waitresses were unfriendly and spent most of the time clattering plates and cutlery very loudly behind the bar. I get it was busy - but even so. I ordered the grilled fish. It was miniscule. A tiny 3 inch by 2 inch piece. It was pathetic. (I didn't say anything as I didn't want to completely spoil the meal and my other half took pity on me and gf age me a piece of his battered bits). When my mushy peas were cold - I did tell the waitress - she proceeded to grab them off the table, say in a rude manner 'I'll change them' and stormed off. I was made to feel it was my fault!! The chips were ok. Bread stodgy. I was left feeling hungry at the end of the meal. Decided to have desert back home. Maybe the experience we had was because we had an itison voucher. Hence small portions etc. I thought the point of these vouchers was to introduce you to a new place so you like it and go again. I won't be going back in a hurry.

Meal was bought as a mother's day present for my partner off her son, very clean and tidy place, a lift to take us, up and down as was below ground, plenty of space and seating available the time we were there, food was good, had cuson fish ,OK, but wish we had the fish much bigger portion, pot of tea included, though there is alcohol sold ,different adventure, worth a visit, ,oww. Thanks Steve stepson for the meal

Visited the place during my day trip to Dundee last week. Awesome ! Thanks to the google review and recommendations , we decided to give it a try from a random pick. The sea-bass and haddock are fresh and chips are yummy! Love the simple deco in the restaurant. We have a joyful lunch there. Will definitely come back again if I visit Dundee.

This is a great place to eat fresh seafood, it is supplied by Spinks of Arbroath so the smokie should be tried. The tiger prawns were fabulous and the batter very good too. The downstairs has the restaurant and ground level has the takeaway. Feels a bit dark going down the stairs but the place is well lit and tables well spaced. Being under the pavement there are alcoves with seating as well as a bar for the drinks and pay station. The service was good and we didn’t have long to wait for our food. It can quickly fill up at tea time.

First time I've been in, never realising it had changed its name from the Deep Sea. Very nice indeed only found out reduced portions were available after we had paid 🙃

The BEST gluten free batter I've ever had (haddock and onion rings). The pan-fried fish (salmon and sea bass) amazing as well. Excellent service. Really a fantastic place!

As a local, I visit this takeaway regularly and it is so up and down and the quality differs every time. The most recent visit 4/3/23 between 8/8:30 pm, I was pleased to see the owner Darren to be the one frying and thought my fish was going to be amazing. Unfortunately it wasn’t, the batter was soggy, oily and just inedible unfortunately. I expected better, if that’s what the owner is happy to give to customers well not much left to be desired. Unlike the St Andrews shop which never fails to deliver the best fish and chips. Take note

Very dissapointed with food... We had chips, curry sauce and battered sausage. Chips were like the frozen ones out a supermarket, not fresh out a chipshop... Curry sauce was horrible, funny dark colour and the taste was bitter, unlike any other curry sauce I've had. No atmosphere and not the cheapest either!! Definitely won't be going back anytime soon

One of the best fish and chip places in Dundee! Been there multiple times already usually on a Saturday for their fish and chips and their special £1 pound/ oyster deal. The batter on the fish is crispy and golden brown, providing a satisfying crunch with each bite. Portion size is generous and fries are fried evenly as well. The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming making it a great spot for a casual meal with friends and family. If you’re a fan of fish and chips, don’t forget to check out this restaurant :)
