We popped in on a rainy Sunday lunchtime as I needed a small lunch, we were on the go and leaving shortly after but just needed a little warmth and snack! Both had tea and I had a delicious vegetable soup. Not too busy but a welcoming atmosphere and had a table by the window, service was friendly and quick, would definitely return.

A great find, nestled amongst the terrace houses of Aberystwyth. A lovely atmosphere with a good choice of real ales if that’s your tipple.

Hung out there on a Monday evening and it was very pleasant. Quiet, cosy and a lot of comfy seating that has your back against a wall instead of people.

Visited a couple of times in the afternoon/ early eve, loved it, great historic place, friendly staff, good selection. Went back for a late drink after a meal out and the place was like a bad nightclub, gone midnight and crowds of raucous drunks lying all over pavement, screaming to be heard over the screeching seagulls. Thought it might be a one-off, but tried slightly earlier a few days after and same loud, quite aggressive atmosphere. I get they can’t control people on the street, but you couldn’t hear yourself think inside due to the crowds outside - such a shame.

Let's cut to the chase, the Ship & Castle is the best pub in Aberystwyth, and I can heartily recommend it. It is well appointed, bright, clean & comfortable, with the best array of choice draft beers you will find anywhere. Ian, the host, is so friendly, welcoming and genuinely hospitable. Nothing is any trouble. The atmosphere in the pub is attuned to everyone having a good time, and if you visit once, I can guarantee you'll definitely return. 100% recommendation!

13/4/24 Saturday afternoon quick beers We two middle aged guys from London were in town too hit the charity shops and explore on a cool, windy and rainy day. We had read in the local paper that this came third in the CAMRA county real ale pubs so we thought we'd give it a try. We entered around 3:45 to find a busy pub, with the screens showing rugby. We surveyed the good choice of real ales and chose a half a pint each of Thornbridge Market Porter (4.5%) and a Wye Valley Butty Bach (4.5%) for £4.80 total. We took a table under one of the TVs and enjoyed the beers, the Market Porter was particularly nice, although not Welsh. The TV channel changed to racing from Aintree covering The Grand National, suddenly everyone was watching the TV above us! We had actually finished our delicious halves but could not really leave as the clientele egged their favourites on! After the race (a riderless horse got silver) we left sated to check out the runner up pub.

Called for a couple of beers and was pleasantly surprised.

Recommended in the Good Pub Guide, and rightly so. A choice of 5 excellent, well-kept ales, which I sampled using the five-beer platter. We visited twice whilst on a short break and will come back again. The service was friendly and welcoming. Monday night was especially good, as there was a music jamming session.

We come in this pub when we're visiting our daughter who lives in the same road. Really nice oldy worldy pub, great selection of beers. Friendly staff and service. Not had any food yet so can't comment on that side of it at the moment. Well worth a visit if you're visiting Aber.

Been in a few times now with Grandson and sampled their vast selection of real ales which are very well kept. Always warm and welcoming.

We were recommended by some CAMRA colleagues back in Shropshire, for us to visit The Ship & Castle Pub, and we finally managed to get there after opening time on a Friday afternoon in early March. A warm friendly welcome from the Barman, who we assume was the Landlord?, and he made us feel immediately at home in this hidden gem of a pub. The pub is spacious, well decorated, and well furnished and has everything you would want from a good local pub experience. After regularly visiting nearly every Pub in the Aber and surrounding areas over the past 40+ years, I just can't believe why we haven't found this wonderful pub before, and we have to say The Ship and Castle is now at the top of our own Pub League venues to visit and relax in, every time we visit Aber. We will be back again soon! and we will enthusiastically recommend a visit to The Ship and Castle to all our visiting friends and relatives too.

Nice, clean & comfortable inside with plenty of choice of ale & spirits. Welcoming & helpful staff who were quick to serve. Clientele friendly too. Parking nearby in any side street. Well worth a visit.

Rugby and a few beers in a friendly pub. Ian keeps a great pint in an excellent pub. Always nice and clean and ample seating to watch sport. Sadly the pool table is gone but there is now extra seating and another TV (possibly not so new as I haven't been for 6 months) . Can't wait for next visit! Keep up the good work 🙂

Not a great atmosphere, the girl behind the bar felt like she just wanted to avoid customers altogether, although the guy was better.

I'm sorry to give this place a bad rating because of the rude grumpy owner. It obviously bothered him that I was a foreigner, so he commented on it. If you want to work in a pub with guests, you need to know how to treat guests regardless of their origin.

Weekend trip to Aber, the locals recommend the Ship. Being an Australian on holiday I dutifully marched to the pub, via the castle to ensure I was at peak thirst. We got a great reception from Ian and staff, beer was extra cold, pub was homely and clean with a great vibe. Keep up the great work 👊

Looking for a quiet pub on a Sunday afternoon. Had meant to visit previously. Found the Ship and Castle partly by luck but what a superb establishment. A couple of ciders to suit most tastes and a wonderful selection of Ales. Would recommend for anyone who appreciates a well kept, quality beer.

Top place in Aber. Sadly most of Abers famously numerous pubs are just lager joints. This is an exception, and I always look forward to the challenge of finding it in the maze of little streets!

Nice pub situated up the back streets at the top of town Tucked away but worth seeking out has about 5x beers on hand pump and craft beers from the likes of Beavertown and Tiny Rebel ect Nice traditional interior and good jukebox

The ship and castle encapsulates everything that a local pub should be. Fantastic selection of ales, courteous bar staff and an all round friendly atmosphere. As a student at the Uni this is one pub I enjoy frequenting.

What a great place, atmosphere and beer always excellent. Every time I visit Aber, I visit the Ship. It's my go-to place for watching rugby and have been once or twice per year for 20 years. Atmosphere is brilliant and there's always plenty of fans from multiple nations having great banter together. All beers are kept well, every time I've been & staff always very good. Looking forward to next visit!

Beware the Black Dragon is lethal but the bar staff aren't!

Some really good Beers on the bar, pretty quiet when we visited but I bet it gets busy. Covid restrictions were in place but that's not a bad thing. Excellent place.

Great local old fashioned pub,good beer,friendly staff,atmosphere is fab,toilets etc very clean... Only negative is that the jukebox,whilst having a fab choice is extremely loud,making chatting more or less impossible,our ears were still ringing the following morning,which is a shame as has put us off returning.
