The Scafell Restaurant in Allerdale

Probablemente el mejor plato de carne de cerdo que he comido en mis extensos viajes. El maravilloso personal y el servicio hicieron de esta comida una experiencia verdaderamente excepcional. Volveremos en 2020!

I have not stayed at the Scafell myself, and so cannot make a fair judgement on the hotel experience, although I know several people that have and have heard it was disappointing for the price. I have, however, eaten at the hotel twice, a year apart. The meal last year was absolutely wonderful, a slight step up in terms of sophistication from the pub grub next door (which is still absolutely fabulous), but still a good hearty meal at a reasonable price, alongside friendly service. That could not be more different from the experience this year. I just have 1 question for the a la carte menu - why? We were warned when booking the table that the menu had changed to a la carte, which we were interested in trying. We never expected the level of pretention that we were greeted with when handed the menus. Chicken with bread and butter pudding? Chocolate sponge cake with beef? In all fairness, the steak I had was excellent, and accompanied by a fabulous peppercorn sauce, well prepared potatoes, and fresh vegetables The only issue was that I had ordered medium rare, and whilst I enjoy my steak slightly on the pink side, I felt that a good vet could have revived what I was given. It was tasty, but there are people far more willing to kick up a fuss about an error like that. We also rather enjoyed the 'romaine lettuce foam' that was served with a tiny piece of lamb. At £18 for the dish we decided to make the most out of it and decided to bounce it to one another across the table just to make sure we got our money's worth. The taste and texture however, was what I can imagine eating the sponge I use to wash my dishes would be like. We left the restaurant still hungry, late as we had booked the table for 8, arrived with plenty of time, but weren't seated until 9. I just feel sorry for the guests that have dinner included with their room, and have to eat that most nights. They must be hungry. Overall, a disappointing meal that is far-flung from the dinner we had the year before. A few days later we had a meal at the riverside which thoroughly made up for it, absolutely delicious and I didn't feel the need to pick up a pizza from Keswick afterwards! There is a huge range of dining options that come between the laid back eating at the Riverside and the pretentious fine dining of the Scafell, that would also be much better suited to be served at the Scafell, as at the end of the day it's a country hotel is the Lake District, and the tiny expensive meals just don't fit into the setting of Rosthwaite, which attracts walkers looking for a little more food than a small cube of duck and a carrot shaving.

Visité aquí para cenar en una noche en Borrowdale. Realmente lo disfruté y la comida era muy buena en general con un servicio amable en todo. Me encantaron los pequeños amuse bouches antes de la comida y tenía un excelente plato principal de haggis de lentejas con apio y verduras. Eligió un postre que nunca antes había comido de 'soufflé de plátano con un helado de chicle'. La primera parte fue sobresaliente y debería haberse servido solo (debido a que era tan agradable), ya que el chicle de chicle no alcanzó el mismo nivel alto y debería haberse quedado afuera. Un lugar realmente agradable y sin duda lo recomendaría cuando esté en la zona.
