Spent the afternoon in Shoreham. We ended up in The Samuel Palmer. Been here a few times before but first time eating. It’s a great country pub with a nice courtyard at the back and traditional setting inside. Had burger and chips, it was nice and did what it said on the tin. Burger was a little on the dry side but had great flavour. Drinks reasonably priced for the area and friendly attentive staff. Planning on returning for dinner in the summer.

On Friday night we visited the Samuel Palmer pub & restaurant in Shoreham. We were a group of 5 gents & 4 ladies. We started sitting outside in the beautiful beer garden, it got a little chilly so the manager kindly turned on the outside heater & provided blankets for the ladies to keep us all warm. When we then wished to move inside the manager again could not have been more helpful, happy to push tables together or find a space where we could all sit. The inside of the pub has been completely renovated to an incredible level, the highest possible standards have been put in place across the building. Some of us sat at the bar where 4/5 staff were busy serving all the customers very promptly. I am a self diagnosed "fuss pot" when it comes to drinks, but the selection is wide enough to please any palette. I opted for the new version of Hofmeister Helles, served in branded ice cold glasses from the freezer and beautiful to drink. One of the staff was concentrating on making cocktails, properly I noted, with muddler in hand. The smell of the fresh mint in the Mojito was just to much to resist, so we tried a few of those too, simply exquisite. If there was but one criticism, it was self inflicted, I had eaten before I came out, the food being eaten all around me looked & smelled phenomenal. On my next visit, which will be soon, I am definitely getting some of those Korean chicken wings. Wine list 10/10 Beer selection 10/10 Spirits & Cocktails 10/10 Staff & service 10/10 Building & finish 10/10 Food, I can't wait to find out.

Popped in here for a post walk pint yesterday. It definitely looks lovely now, comfortable and attractive and not as bland as some modern makeovers. Bar staff were lovely also. Being a sunny March day we went into the garden which wasn't so good however. There are too many tables and they are very close together restricting movement and also a massive canopy that blocks out 90% of the sunlight to the space which seems a rather strange idea. Luckily it was quiet so we were able to get a table (partly) in the sun

Firstly I would say this is a very nice place and I would definitely come again and try some more of the food. We came for Sunday lunch and had roast dinners. The meat was lovely, really good quality and tasty and the wine as you would expect was excellent. The service was also good. I was slightly disappointed with the gravy - thin meat juices rather than rich and tasty, and the dessert portion I had saved myself for was tasty but rather small. Overall I think it is expensive for two courses and wine for a roast dinner and dessert (about £50 a head) - the pub in its previous existence did excellent roasts for less, as other pubs still do in the Sevenoaks area. But I would definitely come back again another day and try the a la carte menu which sounds a bit more special.

I had originally sent this review as an email to the business but considering I have not received a response from them, I am submitting this publicly so others learnt from my experience. We were very disappointed with our recent visit to the Samuel Palmer. We understand it gets busy, especially around Christmas, but we had a bit of a rough time which could have easily been solved with better communication. First, we were told there was a hold on food orders. They offered a seat outside to have a drink whilst the kitchen caught up. I asked if we could reserve a table for one hours time. We eventually got seated and waited... and waited... for someone to even take our drink order. I went up to the bar and it turns out the kitchen had completely run out of food because their delivery didn't show up! We would have gone elsewhere if we'd known that upfront. Honestly, it felt like there wasn't much communication between the kitchen and the front of the house. We've enjoyed the pub in the past, so hopefully this was just a one-off.

Plush, very nicely done up pub a short walk from Shoreham train station. A very cosy place to pop in winter, with two fireplaces in the relaxed pub area. Good selection of local ales, including Stay Wild who are based near Shoreham. Beer was in good condition. I also had the sausage roll from the bar menu which was very tasty. They do a full menu in the restaurant area which sounded good. Prices are expensive in the restaurant, I thought the bar menu was good value for the quality of the food. Service was very friendly. Very good pub.

The staff forgot to serve our drinks and we had to chase, the restaurant was rather quiet as well so I did expect more! We specifically asked for no fish sauce in the salad and the waitress forgot this so we had to send it back. Shortly after we left I realised the side portion of chips which should have arrived with our main was never served either.

We live fairly local to the Sam Palmer and visit there for a pint and sometimes a bite at the bar. I think everyone that knows the pub accepts that its expensive, however a very nice pub/restaurant. Popped in there 2 weeks ago on my birthday and decided to treat myself to a large glass of house red. I was offered a choice of Merlot or Malbec (both bottles open). I was then told by the nice girl behind the bar it would be £17.00 for a glass of Malbec!! This can only be described as a total rip off for a local pub...... Its not the Savoy

Visited Samuel palmer to celebrate a birthday. Selected the 2 course option from the menu. Soup followed by Sirloin beef roast. Soup arrived cold and had to be returned to the kitchen. The main roast was extremely disappointing. Three roast potatoes, two small slices of beef and flavourless cabbage and swede. At £39 plus a 12.5% service charge this is overpriced and definitely not to the quality expected for two AA rosette pub. In addition, service was slow despite being an early sitting and only five of us.

Started off with a really nice starter. Pork was lovely. Couldn't have been better. Then unfortunately the main was a massive let down. Went for sirloin roast. The meat was way over cooked and chewy. The potatoes were undercooked. Looked like they had been pre heated. The tenderstem broccoli was wilted and soggy. The carrot and Yorkshire pudding was the only nice bits on the plate. I ordered cauliflower cheese on the side and although I ate it because i eas hungry it was rock hard and way undercooked. Massively disappointing after a great starter. 100 pounds spent. Which is quite expensive. For the money I'd expect a whole lot more. Had nicer roasts in local harvester. That's all

We stayed at the Samuel Palmer pub for two nights as hotel guests. The pub had recently been refurbished and so we were the first guests to stay. We were there for a wedding and so 6 of us had the three rooms and it genuinely was perfect. The rooms were so beautifully made with such good attention to detail, it truly felt quite luxurious and the staff were especially helpful and went the extra mile to make our stay comfortable. The food was also magnificent, definitely not pub grub it was high quality restaurant standard food. I would without hesitation recommend staying here and would come back soon if I can! Thank you so much.

I nice spot for a pub lunch, but frankly the food they served us was dire! My fish and chips in particular was greasy, badly overcooked and plastered in salt. I don't particularly like salt - and assumed they would not pre-salt the food, since there are salt and pepper dispensers at the table anyway. I would normally have sent the whole thing back, but we were short of time. A great shame, because it's otherwise a really nice pub - but I won't risk eating there again !

During our recent visit to the Samuel Palmer pub, my dad, a wheelchair user, had an outstanding experience. The staff demonstrated genuine care and went above and beyond to ensure his comfort. When we spoke to a staff member the day before our visit, they were not only helpful but also knowledgeable about accessible areas. They proactively reserved a parking space at the front, eliminating any mobility challenges. Their willingness to provide essential information, including details about the accessible toilet, made a significant difference. Once inside the pub, the service continued to impress. Everyone was attentive and supportive, especially towards my dad, demonstrating real inclusivity (unfortunately not always the case). My only suggestion would be to include this accessibility information on their website. Having it readily available would benefit other wheelchair users planning their visit. Thank you again!

Here's the thing. We love Shoreham and we loved this place before it was refurbed. Its now a more spacious and comfortable pub, with ok food but it has issues. We stopped by not intending to spend a fortune but the bar menu was uninspiring so we decided to eat in the restaurant. The menu is limited, which is a good thing sometimes, but this is limited in so far as there were three choices for mains: two fish dishes and one veggie. Meat options were sharing platters priced at £75 for pork and £80 for (allegedly) rib-eye steak. What the hell, we thought, we've come this far let's have the steak. We were not asked how we wanted it cooked so I took steps to ensure it was medium. Starters were nice, the steak arrived on a wooden board with "seasonal vegetables" a small dish of broccoli, and chips. What can I say about the steak? It was indeed cooked medium. Was it rib-eye? Not sure. Looked suspiciously like sirloin. It was tender enough but not particularly tasty. The credit wine jus helped but for £40 each I expected something a bit more. Three courses, one drink each and a coffee set us back £173 including a whopping £20 service charge. As I say there was nothing really wrong with the food I just expected it to be more exciting for that sort of money.

We really wanted to like this pub after knowing about it for several years but never having got round to trying it. Unfortunately, we haven’t been missing out. The food was average at best. The roast chicken was undercooked and the cottage pie arrived warm, but not hot. We were sat in the bar area as we had dogs (not a problem for us) but were not made aware that no desserts are served in the bar area. We were allowed to eat the same main courses that were being served in the restaurant, but not the same desserts. Never heard of such a strange thing to be honest and when we asked what the reason was for this, they had no answer. If that’s the case, don’t show your restaurant menu in the bar area. I watched the owner and his staff behind the bar as my father walked away disappointed and sat back down at his seat, and they all just sniggered and laughed. Extremely rude and unprofessional and as a result we won’t be returning.

The pub is pleasant in lovely surrounds - BUT almost £70 for two roast dinners and two drinks meant I was expecting a satisfying portion. Instead two slivers of beef three tiny potatoes half a carrot three stems of broccoli and Yorkshire pudding. The same size as the kid’s portions. All lukewarm and under-seasoned. I know that everywhere is having to cut back due to prices but it doesn’t take a lot to make a roast feel generous. £70 is a week’s food budget for some families and certainly a treat meal for us so was disappointing to feel short changed. Won’t be back.

The pub itself is very nice and the rear outdoor area is lovely but the portion size of the Sunday roast was the smallest I think I’ve ever had in a pub. I wish I had taken a photo but it was literally a slice of a small floret (not even a full floret as they sliced it!!!) of broccoli, half a small carrot, half a shallot, 3/4 of a roast potato and a drop of gravy, the Yorkshire pudding was great and the beef was lovely and tender although under seasoned and spaced out from everything on the plate (it wasn’t even a big plate). I can’t understand why they would skimp on the cheapest part of the meal and we left unsatisfied but weren’t happy to spend anymore money in there which I imagine is the reason for the small portions, to encourage consumers to order 3 courses but unfortunately the value for money just wasn’t there for us.

Have not eaten in the restaurant yet. We do like drinking in the SP, the decor & ambiance is lovely specially winter time, open fire cosy chairs.

Fabulous country pub with a great atmosphere. However, if you order 3 courses from the bar menu they all turn up together . The soup was tasteless, and burger cold . Clearly more effort is needed to deliver a better customer experience.

1st time I've been to this pub since it had a revamp. Ale was great, so we decided to order a 2 X Chicken & Bacon Pies from the bar menu. when it arrived we both were slightly disappointed as the pie was only slightly bigger than a pork pie and cost £32. The food was nice but seemed well over priced for Bar food. We have no plans to return anytime soon!!

Lovely pub to arrive at after a long country walk. We sat in the bar and the menu was limited but delivered on everything we hoped for. Roast beef X 2, my good man! Great service delivered quickly. The beef was delicious, as was everything else on the plate. Will definitely return and may check out the full menu in the restaurant.

A nice buzz to the venue ,maybe to many dogs and barking for me personally but seems to be the norm these days and this is a big walking area. Drinks and opted to share a chibatta £7.50 ,I honestly thought what arrived was my half it was so small but no that was it. It was almost funny but having had before this is no way met our expectations. Sadly didn't think to take a picture and won't be having again.

Left a message to cancel a booking as one of us had a tummy bug and they insisted on collecting £10 per head per T&Cs. Disappointed, we won’t be going back.

Lukewarm food served on cold plates took over an hour to arrive after our starters, yet there were only 6 covers in the restaurant! The indifferent response when I discreetly complained, and no response at all to a later lengthy detailed private email is shody, especially given the lunchtime bill for 3 with one bottle of the cheapest wine came to £200. At the time I chose not spoil what should’ve been an extravagant, but pleasurable special family celebration, but in hindsight I wish I’d sent the food back and ordered bar snacks as we all left feeling very let down. The 2/3 set course price quoted is misleading as the mains needed an additional dish and some dishes on the very limited menu included a surcharge. A huge disappointment. I had previously visited on a Friday in July and loved it, but left this time feeling so put out I’ll never return.

Probably the worst Sunday roast I had - ever. And for almost £20 absolutely will not be coming back.

Really disappointed. Been for lunch a couple of times before and food’s been very good. Went for dinner with friends this time and really disappointed with the limited menu, portion size and overall cost. 3 of us chose the pork cheeks and each was served one little cheek no bigger than a small chipolata! Pretty underwhelming! Interesting to note the number of empty tables on a Friday night. Overall £350+ for 4 including drinks is overpriced for a country pub, serving this type of food. Sorry!

Too expensive. Nice food but very small portions. Went on Thurs night on set menu at £37 for two courses. Limited menu. Added on bottle of wine between 4 and a couple of beers and coffee it was £65 a head. Not much cheaper than Chapter one whose portions are bigger. It is a pub.

I've been wanting to eat here for ages, what a real treat, the food was absolutely delicious! Honestly the best food I've eaten in this area, since we moved here 15 years ago! Service was excellent. We will certainly be repeat customers. Keep up the great work.

I came here for my mums birthday dinner and had an absolutely exceptional time. The food was so delicious and so fresh, and the atmosphere was just perfect. It was a very classy yet fun vibe and left feeling very satisfied. Usually after eating Italian i feel bloated and disgusting, however the food was so well made and clean, i felt amazing after! Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
