The Salt House Kitchen in Sunderland

15 of us went here for Sunday lunch. Easily the best Sunday lunch in a restaurant I've ever had. The food was delicious and the service was great.

Been there a few times will have to go back there service is fantastic and the food is fantastic very friendly 😀 👌

Ordered the chicken Caesar burger and open prawn sandwich from the lunch menu. Both dishes were underwhelming, basic and tasteless. My iced latte was watery and came in a half-pint glass which I found unusual because for what you’re paying I’d expect better presentation. Overpriced for what it is - won’t be going back.

Busy at 9.40 on a wet and windy Sunday. Nice sausage buns. Loads of comfyseats.

Relaxed atmosphere, friendly efficient staff, delicious freshly made scones!

We called in on Saturday lunch time. I was surprised it was pretty quiet. We order the soup & a pot of tea for two. The tea came quite quickly but I did notice that the cute, little milk churn was splashed with milk around the outside. Then came the loooong wait for our soup. They brought condiments...ketchup, vinegar & mayo (useful when having soup!) When our soup finally arrived we found it was cold. I asked for it warming up...again another long wait for it's return. Yes, it was definitely hot!! It tasted as though it had chilli in it (something neither of us like). Couldn't taste the leek or the potato it was supposed to be. We were I informed there was no chilli in the soup but something had made it hot to the taste buds. I must say that it did come with some tasty bread. I will not be returning.

Excellent location over looking Seaburn beach.Staff very friendly. We enjoyed a bo porridge.

Very poor food and service functional. No smiles, no how’s your meal etc and the place was only a third full so no real excuses. 3 out of a group 4 ordered food. Chicken cedar salad was fine. Steak sandwich full of fat and gristle and dispatched with burnt sweet potato fries. Fish and chips was full of grease and served with the sort of chunky chips you get from an Indian Takeaway which tasted like they had been warmed up from the previous day. Big shame as the location and interior is very nice.

Lovely atmosphere, perfect for brekkie & catch up with the girls. Love it here, definitely worth a visit.

We have just had our daughter’s 21st birthday at The Salt House Kitchen and I really can’t compliment the staff enough!! Everything from start to finish was absolutely perfection!! The attention to detail was incredible!! The atmosphere was so beautiful and the staff couldn’t have been more attentive, professional, friendly, helpful and lovely!! The food OMG was outstanding, beautiful and gorgeous….so so delicious!! I can’t thank yous all enough for such an amazing incredible evening!! From all of Chloe’s family and friends THANK YOU!!! Yous have made her 21st birthday the best time and everyone has complemented on the whole experience, the fantastic food and wonderful staff!!! I would recommend you all in a heartbeat!! Absolutely wonderful x

Call here about once a month, good thick cut toast. Coffee good, service and staff Pleasant, gets busy about 10am

Salt House Kitchen is located on the sea front in Seaburn. It is quite smartly decked out inside. There is a good choice of food for a light lunch, including soup, sandwiches, etc. Service was good and prices were reasonable. We hoped to go back for tea later in the day but found that the restaurant was already closed.

Really enjoyed our breakfast this morning. Enjoyed cappuccino sour bread avocado poached eggs very tasty.Great catching up with Friends very relaxing great view over Seaburn beach.

Staying at the Grand hotel who’s breakfast was frankly awful so on recommendation from daughter tried here - coffee was nice in hindsight I would have had a 2 shot americano - full breakfast was delicious and hot- and very tasty - excellent poached eggs

Only had a breakfast sandwich with a pot of tea but it was fantastic. Lovely interior, everything clean, toilets spotless and very polite staff. Menu has a good choice and is reasonably priced.

Very disappointed ! Staff wandering about doing very little. Went to till to order as no-one interested in taking our order.Ordered 2 sandwiches. Small portion, very little salad. Bread tasted stale. With 1 tea and 1 soft drink bill was £30. Won't be going back

We visited for afternoon tea for a special birthday. Disappointed that coffee was not included in the price of the afternoon tea menu, not everyone drinks tea !!! charged £3.50 extra for a coffee. Therefore for a small afternoon tea worked out at £21.50p, definitely not worth the money. Price shown on website menu is not the same price when the bill came, it’s more expensive. Only 2 little finger sandwiches each, scones were very dry and petite cakes , the pastry was rock hard. The little meringues were shop bought. One toilet for men and women. Overall very disappointing, would not be returning or recommend

Has the most gorgeous caramel latte

Considering this place is on a prime spot on the seafront, overall we cannot fault this establishment. The service by the staff, and the food are both exceptional. The cost of all this is very acceptable considering how high many similar places are charging! You are also guaranteed a seat, with minimal waiting times, no matter how busy they are. Well done!

Deceiving, it has a small entrance into a beautiful big, tastefully decorated, welcoming restaurant Faultless, good food, good wine, very obliging staff xx

Stopped here after searching for a gluten-free place in Seaburn, lovely independent café the proprietor or manager was really friendly and helpful. Managed to bag a gluten-free vegan cake to go! How rare and exciting! Also almond milk flat white which was delicious.They also do gluten-free food options I've had a fish finger sandwich. Hassle free heaven!

While visiting family in Sunderland they recommended The Salt House for breakfast, we enjoyed it so much we returned the next morning. I had a full breakfast while my daughter had the vegetarian breakfast, my grandsons had the pancakes, second morning we had eggs florentine with baby spinach,everyone enjoyed all their meals. On both occasions it busy with a lovely atmosphere and friendly staff.

Very nice place to go for breakfast. The English breakfast looked gorgeous, I had pancakes with blueberries and banana and while they were very nice for only £1 less than a full breakfast I felt the pancakes should have at least looked more, maybe big and fluffy ones but they were only thin. Still very much enjoyed thou.

OMG, surly unpleasant waitress, place full of young babies with full nappies and screaming, the food.....well I had to ask if the burnt lumps were chips, had to ask for the table to be cleared and was ignored for fifteen minutes when trying to order a coffee, had to get up and go to the counter for coffee, all I can say is their standards are well far below my expectations.

Super place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Amazing decor clean stylish but very welcoming, friendly staff with great attitude to customers. Food is excellent. Please don't miss this when out for a seafront stroll.

It was a christmas present from our daughter and because of illness just got to use it the place was beautiful food fantastic and the service was great we will definitely visit again

Pleasant walk along seafront and chose the salt house kitchen for mine and the wife’s stop off. Quite pleased we did as well, we found a table outside no problem and our order was taken almost immediately. Our drinks came straight away but our sandwiches were a bit of time which proved to me they were freshly prepared. I had the fish fingers and wife had the steak. Both were top class and we will be back again. Thank you

Visited for a light breakfast. Nice seating area outside which was made better due to it being a lovely summers day. I ordered the bacon pancakes and a drink. It was slightly on the expensive side in my opinion but the food was very tasty and the area is very much up and coming so I did not mind paying. A great mixture of salty bacon and sweet pancakes and syrup. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great location, plenty to do in the area, I would certainly recommend if you are out and about down the beach.

Had a sundays dinner and desert after a friend's recommendation. Simply a fantastic place and can't recommend enough. They offer an expensive menu and the service was really quick and friendly.

The poshest fry up going! It was delicious! Staff were lovely too! Looking forward to my next visit!

Gluten free options and helpful staff. A great open crab sandwich, but seemed rather pricey for what it was. Definitely worth booking as it was busy at lunchtime.

2nd visit for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. Starters were soup, haggis bon bons and vegetarian starter, mains were pork, sharing platter and chicken burger. All the food was piping hot and everyone enjoyed their meals. Lots of veg with the mains, carrots, parsnips, cabbage, mash, roast potatoes. All were lovely. Everyone in our party of 5 and baby enjoyed their meals. Lovely yorkshire puddings too. Service was prompt and really good. Well done lovely meal, we will be back.

Waitress came and took our drinks orders and we asked for some time to decide on our food, less than a minute later another waiter came order to take our order, complete lack of communication. Food came in good timing, but again the service let them down to the point we had to go to the bar to hand them a plate so we had room on our table, even when 3 people had been to the tables either side of us and we were ignored. Small portions of veg and dry meat, the "red wine" jus was basically standard gravy, not once were we asked if anything was OK with the food. Waited over 20mins from finishing our food to see if our table was going to be cleared and if we were even going to be offered a dessert however each of the members of staff walked past our table more than 3 times and each time turned their backs on us. So we got up went to the bar, paid and left. Hugely disappointed after hearing good things.

Very disappointed with the Sunday lunch. It would appear that the roast meats are bought in ready sliced , the beef was like eating cardboard . Won't be back in a hurry !

We had heard about this place being good and checked it out on Tripadvisor. We were in the area few weeks ago and decided to go in on speck. When we opened the door we found the place full, there was good ambience. Unfortunately they could not fit us in. So we booked in advance and went today for our Sunday lunch. We arrived just before 12 and found it almost full, lots of happy chatter and a nice crowd. Drinks served and orders taken we settled down to wait. It took about 20 mins but not surprising as it was full by then and the food would be freshly prepared. My good lady opted for lamb and I had the loin of pork, accompanied by a lovely terrine of roasted and boiled vegetables (5). Both the meats were perfectly cooked, smothered in a wonderful gravy and the vegetables were traditional (cooked not crunchy!). The portion sizes were perfect and I did not leave a morsel on the plate (severely tempted to lick it). The dessert menu was very limited but we opted for ice cream to finish off. The service was very good. We have paid almost double for a similar meal at a medium to high end restaurant, it was excellent value for money. We will certainly visit again.

Ended up here by accident when our original plans for The Stack for my birthday food didn't work out. They were able to accommodate our party of 5 with no booking and the place was pleasantly busy inside. Decor is lovely, felt like somewhere special. Smaller menu on a Sunday but there was plenty to choose from easy for 2 picky eaters who declared their fish and chips the best they'd ever had. They were able to make a roast dinner dairy free with no issues. Huge portions, absolutely fantastic food. Couldn't fault a single thing. 90 for 5 main meals and 5 drinks was good price for the quality of the food. Will definitely visit again.

Potato skins were soggy, undercooked, and under seasoned. The ciabatta with my sandwich was like cardboard. Presentation was excellent but the food was barely edible

A fantastic bistro/restaurant. We made bruch the other day (normally do lunch) and it was fantastic! A great mix from cooked breakfast to tea and toast and everything in-between. Staff lovely. I can see why it's always packed! I'd book if I where you!

Sunday lunch is brilliant, plenty meat lovely veg can't fault it, polite patient staff, only niggle is the treacle pud, its not a sponge as such it's a muffin served with ice cream (you can request custard) it's not remotely treacleish, quite hard (had it been in the microwave ? too long if so) just a warning you won't get granny's treacle sponge so don't expect it you will be sorely disappointed.

Lovely Christmas afternoon tea with my daughter as a Christmas gift. Very enjoyable with a choir singing carols which made the evening perfect.

The atmosphere in this cafe is unmatched. Truly sumptuous seating and decor. Lovely coffees, nice breakfasts, and great service. Really enjoyed our time here and would certainly return.

I had poached eggs,and either the eggs were off or not cooked properly as I was violently sick and had diaherea,For the rest of the day and overnight, I certainly will never be back

Called for breakfast. We've been before. It certainly didn't disappoint.

Went for breakfast with my better half and daughter. Lovely setting, staff were great and food was lovely. I think independent places like this are brilliant for Sunderland and Seaburn. I ordered a full English and this is not a criticism but perhaps some food for thought, it might be improved with an additional egg / fried or scrambled and some more beans. For what little extra this would cost the cafe, a very slight increase in portion size I think would make a difference. This doesn’t affect my rating at all. Looking forward to going back.

Lovely cosy place and food was beautiful with gluten free options for main courses but sadly NO dessert options like cake etc need to reassess why adding wheat to Mars bar cake as its unnecessary imo. Service friendly and quick enough considering how busy it was. Would have rated 5 star but for gf dessert options.

Came to the restaurant on Sunday 15 oct 2023 with my wife and 3 others booked the Sunday lunch 3 of us had the lamb one had chicken and one beef all the meals and veg were delicious and piping hot the service was excellent now I know why you have to book will definitely be back

This is the best place in Sunderland for a full breakfast, their vegetarian breakfast is beautiful as well. Good size coffees and drinks. Very reasonably priced for the quality of ingredients you get. Hands down one of the best restaurants in the north east.

We came here on a friends recommendation, who’s usually spot on! Sadly, I don’t know if we caught them on a bad day or what but I was not impressed. My son ordered a Burger which came with chips & onion rings. The battered onion rings were so greasy I had to squash them on my paper napkins to try and reduce the amount of oil in them and even then they were just about palatable as all you could really taste was the oil . I had just wanted a dessert . The cakes looked good but sadly, the one I chose must have been the very near end/ last remaining slices of that cake, as it was dry and it didn’t taste fresh at all ( and one thing I do know about is cakes )! If someone had asked us during the meal how it was - I would have mentioned this - and I’d sat with only a half eaten cake in front of me for some time ! My son who loves cakes too tried to eat the other half but even he gave up in the end. A waitress came after our meal was obviously finished and asked if it was okay , to which I hesitated , as I didn’t want to spoil the day out with my son and I’m also not one for complaining or causing a problem. The waiter that came to take the card payment was lovely and I felt able to tell him that I was disappointed with the cake, and that it hadn’t tasted fresh at all, as I would hate anyone else to be disappointed with it, especially at £4.65 a slice . He did apologise for this. Two drinks , one burger n chips and one dessert £27.20 .

Food looked fab, but we only had coffee which was lovely, Other diners at nearby tables all seemed to enjoy their food, the service and atmosphere was great- sitting in the sun watching the world go by with good coffee- perfect! We've already planned our next visit to enjoy a beautiful breakfast!

Honestly, was expecting better from the reviews I read but I found it a bit meh! And pricey for what it was. Feel like I've missed something!

Came across this bistro on our way back from North Yorkshire to Northumberland doing the coastal route and decided to stop for lunch (Friday 25th August) We were greeted and seated immediately by a lovely lass, menus were given to us and a drinks order taken. We ordered lamb koftas and a fish finger sandwich. Both were well presented and delicious, a fish finger sandwich doesn’t sound very exciting but this one was fabulous, battered goujons of fish, granary bread served with tartare sauce and mushy peas. The lamb koftas were served on a bed of a Greek salad (load of feta cheese) and tzatziki dressing. The staff were very friendly and efficient (especially the young man who was our main server) Thank you for a very enjoyable lunch.

Was turned away due to dining on my own despite there being 5 available tables inside, and several albeit wet tables outside available.

Only had bacon sandwich and tea but it was a lovely bacon sandwich and tea. Sitting outside in the sun ☀️on the seafront. Very nice 👍

Great food, great service and atmosphere

Previously I've written a good review but today's visit was a let-down. The service was extremely slow and I couldn't believe that a traditional cooked breakfast could be produced that was so tasteless. How can bacon be tasteless? A new culinary depth. Didn't complain - why spoil the rest of our morning. Asked for card machine to pay and waitress decided she had other things to do. Won't be back in a hurry.

My son and went here last week, we got the Sunday dinner which was spot on. I've been there several times with my wife and the food is spot on every time, definitely worth a visit.
