The Ruby in Braintree

The ordering online experience is very poor. It is possible to scroll down to the bottom of your order and have to delete dishes to see the bottom if you want to increase the quantity altogether. It is not possible to do it in the confirmation or payment pages. Will not be using again all the time they have the current website. I'll do a separate review for the food when it arrives!

I would have given three stars if it wasn't for the obnoxious old man that delivered my food! I had to wait for it to be delivered for about an hour and then he made a big fuss about he couldn't see the numbers to get into the flat. Well, it's not difficult, use a torch and I let him in when he phoned me anyway! I'm paying his wages and he's talking to me like that! Last Tuesday, I got him again and he was even more obnoxious than before! I won't be ordering food from you again!

I would have liked to talk to message the restaurant directly but can't find where! The food was tasty and had a good level of spice. However, the vegetable biryani had quite a few hard inedible green sticks (probably from the green beans) which really spoiled it for us. Probably won't be ordering again from them.

Scam Warning this place is a scam I keep getting messages from them. I can't block them then or opt out. I don't remember ever giving them my number or ordering from them. Also since they have been contacting me I have been getting constant scam messages and phone calls.

We usually get our takeaways from one of the other nearby restaurants, but when ordering online found that the order was over £54 for three of us. I saw that we could get the same order for £43 from The Ruby, and although I was a little concerned incase there was a negative reason for this, we decided to give them a go. Wow, a really nice meal, and everything cooked to perfection!. King Prawn Madras with proper King Prawns, and the perfect heat. Veggie Korma tasty and not too sweet, and the Tandoori mixed grill well presented and delicious pieces of meat. Rice, popadoms and Garlic Naan also really good standard. I usually give an improvement point but for once honestly cannot think of anything! Very good job, and will be going there next time 100%

Our favourite Indian in Braintree. Very tasty food with good vegan dishes available. Staff always help with our dietary restrictions. Usually very quick delivery. Highly recommended.

Food was great and delivered earlier than expected which was very nice. First time ordering here and will definitely be ordering again.

Naan was black and flakey, the onion bhajis were overly dry, the tikka chicken was just normal chicken which was also dry, the madras was very watery also. Such an inconsistent place quite clearly the same person doesn’t cook every day they’re open because one of them seems to be good and the other can’t even give you what you order.

One my first takeaway or visit to a restaurant I always have a prawn madras as that is my favourite. Unfortunately the Prawn Madras was extremely disappointing. Not due to the lack of prawns but to the lack of flavour! It was just prawns in a hot greasy soup. I wonder if they forgot the Madras spices and what gives the sauce some consistency as it was so thin! Fortunately my husbands curry was nice! Sorry we won't be back.

Best India takeaway I had for a long time number one of Essex

Ordered takeaway tonight, usually alternate between the Ruby and Balti Nights. Took about 50 mins, ordered online. Had Kati roll, garlic chicken tikka and Keema starters and the special rice. All really good and tasted fresh, big portions as well - pretty much a full chicken breast in the Tikka! Wife had an aubergine dish that she really rated as well. Sometimes takeaway can be hit and miss even places we have used before but tonight's was really good.

Very average Indian, lamb was lovely and tender and the saag paneer was good but apart from that it was only ok. The butterfly king prawn starter was disgusting and inedible had to call up and let them know as I don't think it's fair to serve that to people, the rice was kind of hard, the cheese naan had hardly any cheese on it and the bombay aloo didnt taste of much. Looking at other reviews this may of just been a one off but our first time trying so a bit disappointed.

Great vegan options, varied and delicious. Had the vegetable jalfrezi and they kindly added tofu for me. Highly recommend for vegans looking for a decent curry.

They are open online tonight so we ordered £40 of food and then called to see how long! The very rude man told us they were shut!!! We said you’re open on your website and on google and you’ve taken our money! He promptly hung the phone up and wouldn’t answer again! What sort of scumbag robs your money and then won’t answer the phone once they know what’s happened!!! Spent hours calling and calling and they wouldn’t answer!!! Absolute scumbags! Thieving scumbags don’t order from this hole of a place they are lying thieves and they will be getting a summons! Terrible people with no morals I honestly can’t believe after all the money we have spent there that they have done this to us!!!! Avoid these people at all costs terrible human beings!!!!!!!

Really nice food and well delivered. After setting expectation of a 50 minute wait on delivery order, on busy Saturday night, actually our food was 20-30 minutes, and piping hot; very friendly delivery staff too; massive menu to choose from but all meals were delicious by the 4 of us, and not really bank breaking either...certainly enough for a couple of lunches the day day as extra. definitely recommend

Haven't ordered from here in so long and it used to be our favourite, unfortunately it wasn't very nice, it was swimming in water, the chicken was chewy also, could fill a glass with the amount of water on the plates.

Be aware of sharing your data with this company… they’ll never delete your data, GDPR is not their strongest area + their database is very vulnerable for attacks

A great meal. My partner had a vegan meal; he hasn't had Indian food in forever because of allergies, it's a real pleasure to watch him enjoy a good indian meal. I had Ruby biryani- yum, a canny use of delicious ingredients, spicy and I didn't feel like I had eaten too much rich food, enough for two people really, I paired it with saag paneer and wow, such a good combination. I thoroughly recommend them and will be using them again in the future.

I generally cook my own Indian dishes from scratch but I occasionally order a meal from the Ruby and have enjoyed every meal they’ve sent. So many Indian restaurants offer dishes that are almost indistinguishable but not here. My particular favourite is their jalfrezi. Easily the best in Braintree and, as a lad from the West Midlands I can honestly say I’ve not had better there either!

Ordered at the weekend for the first time, the food took almost 2 hours to arrive. It was not hot (onion bhajis were cold) and the curry was extremely watery. Almost like it was watered down to go further. This is not the usual quality that we are used to, I will order again but will not be buying at the weekend.

I’ve had issues with this place over the years but I can honestly say the food we had tonight was perfect in every single way! To be honest for the last year, every single thing I’ve ordered from here has been good but tonight I’m not sure I’ve ever had a better Madras or been this full or satisfied with a good order! I cannot recommend this place highly enough!

Usually stick to the same indian but decided to try The Ruby as a 1 off change. Ordered on website at 7:05pm, order went through and was given a time of 7:48pm for delivery, we live under a mile away from The Ruby but was charged £2 delivery (even though we spent just over £50 on our order). By 8:05pm we had still not received our food so I phoned The Ruby to 1 check they had received order and 2 to ask how long it would be. A lady answered seemed very unapologetic explaining that they were a driver down and the driver another driver would be back to collect our order soon and will deliver, so please wait another 5 minutes... 30 mins later our take away was finally delivered so all in all 1hr and 30 mins wait and you guessed it the food was cold so had obviously been sitting in the bag for quite a while from the point it was cooked until delivery. I completely respect that issues can occur at times and there may be delays, that's life but would it not be common sense and manners to actually contact the customers and make them aware of what is going on, if we had been advised of this then we would have been more than understanding. We are not psychic, we are sitting at home waiting for our food that we paid a fair amount of money for. A seriously disappointing experience and £50 wasted.

One of the best restaurants in Braintee, the food is vibrant and tasty with amazing selects and Kati Rolls which are the best. Sadly only take aways are available but thats not an issue with food this good.

Had a takeaway. It arrived promptly and every single dish was delicious. The Dansak was exactly as it should be - hot, sweet and sour. Too many restaurants pander to the “English” way of curry by adding curry heat, but having no taste. These dishes were delicious and had a depth of flavour rarely achieved. Definitely my new Number 1 for Indian food in Braintree.

I’ve previously had mixed experiences here, particularly during covid! Today we ordered a takeaway, it was late on a Wednesday and it arrived within 45 minutes as they said and it was perfect in every way! Huge pieces of chicken, Madras was exactly as flavoursome and hot as you would want and there was a lot of food which was fairly priced! Cannot recommend this place highly enough based on todays experience!

This is the takeaway we usually use, but today's meal wasn't as good as normal ... Huge bits of chicken - some of which were tough and chewy. Neither dish had nearly enough sauce, which isn't normally an issue so the meal in general was too dry. Disappointed.

Order online do not expect discount or the food you order keep trying but never again lost patience with the ruby I am sure there us far better about

The best curry I've ever had. Moved to Essex last year and I invite friends and family over specifically to try it! Very good. Delivers quick and presentation is perfect.

I don't ever leave reviews but the jhaal khofta Kati roll is amazing I got that and chicken tikka/ onion bhajii kata 2 for £10 Mon to Thurs.The chicken one is good but lamb is amazing Also good pub straight opposite so ask for food in an hour instead of 15-20 mins it takes to cook and go get a couple of pints👍

Yuk. Food is just mass produced and microwaved. The chicken has a texture of fake cheese, it's disgusting. Pumped full of water and rubbery and awful. Can;t imagin what kind of life the chicken would have had. All food came in plastic tubs in a plastic bag. Utterly shamful in the day and age. Never going back after this experience. Felt sick eating it.

We have stopped using the Ruby as the last few takeaways we have had lacked in quality. The chicken tikka was dry and tasteless and the quality of the food tastes like its rushed rather than concentrating on the quality of the food which was the very reason we always used to order from the Ruby. I don't know whether its complacency or whether they are trying to get the food as quickly as possible due to the pandemic. Either way the quality isn't what we're used to and no longer order from Ruby

We ordered from here for the first time and I've wavered between leaving a 3 or 4 star review, I have gone for the latter.First of all, they have the biggest selection of vegan and vegetarian options of any Indian I have ordered from in the area. It was wonderful to have such a huge choice. Our food arrived in a timely manner and was nice and hot. The portion sizes were slightly smaller than some other places but perfectly adequate.Our negatives were that the vindaloos were not really that hot and although we had asked for no potato in them, they duly arrived with potato. This was especially upsetting as one member of our household has Potnonomicaphobia. Overall, I would consider ordering from them again as long as I was able to reiterate 'no potato!'

Horrific, second time I’ve had food from this place that was inedible!! The first contained chicken with the texture of wood and this one, well I’m unsure whether they had simply run out of the correct ingredients but my jalfrezi arrived and it was luminous red, I took one bite and not only was my mouth on fire there was an overwhelmingly bitter taste that made me feel sick to my stomach. I called to complain and the most I was offered was a replacement jalfrezi on them next time I call he said he didn’t put any green chillis in he replaced with chilli powder!! That’s right they gave me simply chicken in hot chilli powder to the extent that it was so gut churningly hot and bitter that it was not edible and as I’d tipped over the rest of the food I had, simply offering to replace one dish to make me have to go back there is quite simply not decent. My suggestion is to use Raj Garden not only are the reliably fresh and good but they cover exactly the same area and in all the years I’ve used them they have always been as close to perfect as you can get!

I’ve been using this place off and on for a while but my issue previously is that it is inconsistent almost like they have a good chef and they’ve asked some random dude if he fancies a go at cooking on other occasions.Previously I had chicken that had the texture of wood, it’s was so strange and inedible I googled it and surprisingly it is actually called wood chicken and it can happen to some chicken however they also said it’s easy to detect when cutting the chicken into chunks so I assume to save money they just took the chance on me and took my £38.After this I ordered and it was a decent meal so I ordered again and this time it was a Sunday so they used a generic, tasteless, been reheated again and again sauce and it was not fresh. I took a break and ordered again and it was ok again and then the next time which was last night sums this place up perfectly.I paid £38 again, never asked for the wood chicken refund cuz I was so disgusted I just wanted to forget, this time the chicken tikka jalfrezi I ordered didn’t even fill half the container and it was luminous red!! Unfortunately like a fool I trusted this place would not try and choke me more than once. I had one mouthful of chicken and it was so hot and overwhelmingly disgusting I couldn’t eat it and and I’d tipped over everything!I called the restaurant and the second guy who came to the phone wasn’t keen on replacing the same night as we do live a fair distance from them so he said he would replace just that dish next time we order. I put the phone down and emailed asking for a full refund or a full replacement meal and they simply ignored me sooooooo, my advice is to use Raj Garden in Notley they have been consistent and always use fresh ingredients and cover the exactly the same area as The Ruby with the difference being they wouldn’t ever serve you chicken in purely chilli powder and then refuse to refund you in full. Making me have to go back there after taking my money and nearly choking me to death is pretty low! Plz avoid this place and use Raj Garden.

Was very disappointed, first time for take away , recently moved to the area and myself and partner orderd dinner. Their was no flavour, it was very bland in flavour, temperature was just warm.

We are regular customers, the food is delicious and there's a good choice for vegetarians. I love the paneer dishes (Indian cheese, a bit like halloumi but better!)Ordering on line is easy, delivery quick and safe. My only request is that they should put descriptions of different dishes on the menu leaflets as we as online.

We always use the ruby. The food is delicious, hot and amazing value. Due to the tier 4 & lockdown restrictions we recently order for delivery. The drivers are polite and follow strict COVID no contact delivery rules. I would certainly recommend The Ruby in Braintree.

Ordered last night. Lamb curry. Was soft and with thick chunks of meat and lushes of sauce. Also had mixed started from grill. Exceptional. Also quick delivery.

Prior to lockdown this place was exceptionally good, I had several deliveries and the food was good every time.Unfortunately the time a few weeks back was sparse and disappointing but today was beyond disappointing!I called late on a Sunday and they have blatantly reheated old food because everything was so dry and tasteless it shows me the type of people who run this place.The first piece of chicken I bit into I couldn’t bite the whole way through, it can’t be gristle because it’s chicken it looked cooked but it was inedible! The rest of the chicken was dry and not freshly prepared I dare them to reply and say otherwise because quite blatantly they made our meal with old leftovers! The rest of the chicken was crispy and black around the edge and bone dry in the middle, the rice was bone dry with minimal amounts of chicken and as for the naan, who can’t cook a decent naan bread? I can do a better one in the microwave!!!!How dare they charge me that much money for inedible food I am disgusted that was my meal and won’t be going back. I feel robbed!It wasn’t very flavoursome or spicy as I would expect it was bland with reheated dry meat, still barely any meat in the Biryani, the naan was tasteless and the lamb inside was a dull colour and not even close to either good or fresh and the potatoes in the saag aloo were not cooked through so again it’s because it’s reheated and finally one piece of meat made me physically gag when I tried to chew through it!Messed up just because it’s the end of the day who do they think they are charging me for that rubbish!£35 and not a single thing was freshly prepared and decent I would be embarrassed to serve that food.My advice is to call Raj Garden in Notley which is consistently good and worth the money.

Avoid the Biryani!Previously everything was good but their Biryani had so little meat in it but it was done well so I always let it go.Now they have taken away the big round tray of biryani that every single Indian has and it’s a small tub! What a shame the raj garden in white notley are the only Indian that haven’t tried to reduce their portions and they do so much better because of it!!What a shame!

We were impressed with the variety on the menu and decoder to have the meal deal that is available on Monday to Thursday. The food was delicious and arrived to our house on time and pipping hot. Just a couple of improvements in our opinion 1) Special rice compared to another indian we use doesn't contain as much. The other takeaway we use put lamb tikka, chicken tikka, prawns in it. 2) Naan could be slightly bigger.

The Ruby was recommended by a friend. Having used a different shop for many years, I thought I'd have a change. Ordered several different dishes for a family meal and everybody was suitably impressed. I will be ordering from here again!

After trying pretty much all of the curry houses in Braintree I can confirm that The Ruby does not disappoint. They are so prompt with their delivery times, the food arrives hot and is always really tasty. Our favourite dishes are the Goan Xacuti, Taba and Muurgh Jhaal fry. The meal deal is such good value for money and easily feeds 2 with leftovers for the next day. Thoroughly recommend and will continue to use The Ruby!

We ordered the mega meal deal and was more than impressed! Really good value for money, 2 starters, 2mains, 1 side, 2 rice and a naan bread for £24.95. Website said delivery in 1 hour but they were delivered in 40 mins. Great tasting meal and enough for 2 days. Will definitely be ordering again.

Delicious food as always. We ordered a takeaway for delivery online (really easy) which was on time and the driver was lovely. I will definitely be ordering a takeaway for delivery again. My husband had a dish he hadn’t tried before and thoroughly enjoyed it.
