We had an evening meal here and it was nice that we could bring our dog in with us. 2 out of 3 meals were very nice. Fish and chips were lovely, lamb burger was nice but one of us had a chicken burger which was just dry pieces of chicken in a dry bun with nothing else in it so struggled to eat it.

Had a meal here Good Friday as we were staying in a B & B locally. Pleasant staff, and the girl behind the bar never stopped- she was barmaid and waitress! We ordered coq au vin and lasagne. Both were ok, the lasagne was served in a bowl with 2 pieces of garlic bread, would have been better with a bit of salad too. Quite expensive at £12. We both had puddings which were lovely. Nice atmosphere in the pub which was quite busy.

We arrived early evening before the kitchen had opened, so knew we had to wait a while. There was no draft beer available (perhaps due to delievery probs? Who knows, were not informed). We were told where the special's board was and ordered our food from it. A while later was informed that specials were off! So we ordered from the main menu. The food was okay, nothing special, and quite expensive we thought ie £13 for fish and chips. Asked for the dessert menu and waited and waited for someone to return to take our order. In the end we got up and went to the bar to pay for our meal.

Just decided at a last minute to come away with my friend for my birthday. Arrived at about 4 and got a lovely friendly welcome off Lilly.. We were shown to our room which was lovely. After our hot journey we sat out side in the beer garden. Just perfect. Now sitting inside for our evening meal. Can't wait after the lovely reviews.

After a long day cruising around Lake Windermere, we were heading back to Coniston and spotted a sign for the Royal Oak in Spark Bridge. A lovely couple of pints of Lakeland Brewhouse Blonde, brewed just down the road in Ulverston. My wife opted for the steak and ale pie. Now, in my book a pie needs to have a bottom and a top. This one didn't. It had a lid made of sourdough. But my wife swears it is the best pie she's ever tasted. I went for the venison burger. Housed in a sourdough roll, it had lovely dense rich tasting meat and plenty of it, with a rich red-currant sauce . We couldn't believe we'd been able to walk in and get such a good quality meal. Staff were very welcoming and helpful and, unlike some places we've been there were enough of them. They even had a decent choice of music playing in the background. Definitely worth a small detour from the main road.

What a truly lovely place to visit, a warm welcome from all the team, it was clear they were united in providing a wonderful experience for their customers. On the evening we visited the new manager ‘ Mark’ had to step into the shoes of becoming chef and did a great job. The food was lovey however for me above all it was heartwarming to see such a team spirt, creating a warm atmosphere. Thank you team Royal Oak continue to shine ⭐️.

We had a lovely meal with friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere. The beers are good. Ciders are acceptable but not a great choice. The menu for anyone who eats meat is excellent with a wide range of choices. Unfortunately there is only one vegetarian choice: Halloumi burger. It was nicely done but is no good for vegans, lactose intolerant or just vegetarians who like a choice. It’s a shame, as better choice ought to be easy to include in the menu or with specials. I’d have given a 5 star review if the right choices had been available.

A member of staff was eating greasy onion rings then wiping his mouth with his hand behind the bar!!! Licking his fingers. Literally putting his fingers in his mouth. Then wiping them on his outfit and going back to serving customers. In a pandemic!!! On a busy Saturday night. It literally turned my stomach. Clearly the kitchen staff were in on it too because why had he even got food behind the bar? That must be the culture there. Also, warm corona from the fridge and not the nicest choice of ales in an area famous for excellent ale. Soooo. Not the best. It would be a nice place with a little effort, some better ale, discipline and hygiene. Felt more like a generic chain pub rather than a traditional country pub, which was a shame. But honestly, after the onion ring incident I’m unlikely to return unless I hear that hygiene has been enormously improved.

On arrival we were asked what time we would like breakfast? Then we were immediately told its between 830 and 930 by the unfriendly women leaning over the bar. In the morning we got a knock on the door around 10.15am asking when we were leaving as checkout is 10am? so we had a mad panic getting showered and dressed so we could vacate the room. We had thought it was 11 the check out when we booked and decided to look just before we left and it does actually say 11. When we asked the landlady she got funny and said no its 10am and they need to update there website. Also the mattress was filthy, there is bare electrics, the window was black and moldy. I would not have this women working in any of my businesses as she doesn't give a rats bum about customers and you get the Impression customers are an inconvenience for her. We gave it 2 stars as the room is nice on first impressions and it was only 50 quid. Dont bother going until its changed hands as its up for let

They don't serve food as they no longer have a chef. The room are comfortable if a little shabby, worn carpets and the feel of the end of the line. It is sad to see what was once a thriving pub on its knees. I doubt that it will be open for very much longer.

No atmosphere, pity, as it’s a nice building. Lady serving warmed up after a while, but quite unwelcoming initially. A lot of the menu wasn’t available, that said, the food was edible, and decent enough, as far as very basic pub fare goes, nothing special. Pool table was thick with dust around the edges, that’s just lack of interest in your business. Needs a manager with some enthusiasm to market and promote a new menu and inject some passion into the business, especially as the nearest pub has just closed. Zero allergy advice for example, not acceptable these days.

As soon as you walk in it’s a ghost town. Not even a local so not a good sign. Fosters tasted like the lines have never been cleaned! Steak was shocking, without a doubt been sat for at least a week, mushrooms that came with it were inedible. The battered fish tasted old and was just very sad. No atmosphere at all and customer service was shocking too. No one came to see how the food was etc too busy sat talking and on their phones. For a place like that you need the good atmosphere and definitely having a good variety of fresh food. Management obviously have no enthusiasm to make a good impression with the locals or getting people in. Will close soon.

This pub has had a rough time recently. It was closed for a while then reopened about 4 years ago with very enthusiastic owners, great food, good atmosphere, place was always full. Then about a year ago the owners left and I am not quite sure who has taken it over. There seems to be a different group each night but invariably from Manchester it seems. We have tried it a couple of times for old times sake but the place is like a ghost town, food is ready made reheated frozen affair and to cap it all off, they don't seem to have crisps or nuts (delivery not arrived it seems). Judging by the other reviews it looks like this place is doomed as the current owners seem to have no idea at all. This coupled with the recent closure of the next door Farmers Arms is a disaster for the beer drinkers of the area. At least Steve in the Red Lion in Lowick Bridge is still going. Please, someone with a bit of knowledge about how to run a pub, take over the Royal Oak! It can be a great pub in a lovely location and deserves to be saved from the current tenants.

¡NO!

Me dijeron "No", ella no tenía nada. !

Not too sure what is going on with the management of the Royal Oak as it appears that there have been several different people in over the last few months. I scoured the website and Facebook to see what their plans were for New Year's Eve, no mention of anything but we went anyway. It was very quiet indeed, no food on and really not much of an atmosphere with no fires lit. The staff were reasonably friendly and kindly offered some bubbly to the few who were still in at midnight. I would not recommend this pub until a more settled team take over- it wouldn't take too much to get it back to the great place it once was but there's sadly not much sign of it at the moment.

After a day decided to,eat out and so called into The Royal Oak at 7.45pm. Although the restaurant was nowhere near full we were told that the kitchen was unwilling to take anymore covers that evening. We can only assume the staff feel the pub is doing so well they can afford to turn away business on an off season Thursday. Thank goodness the nearby Farmers Arms was much more accommodating. Will not bother the Royal Oak staff again, there being plenty of other pubs serving good food in the area, with its neighbour the Farmers Arms being one.

We went today for Sunday July 22nd for lunch as a family of 7. A celebration for dad's 91st birthday. As soon as we stepped through the door we were made very welcome, drinks order taken immediately, including a 'guided tour' of the different gins :). Above our table was a Happy Birthday banner, a lovely touch from the staff. The food was well cooked and tasted delicious, portions were a good size, excellent service. After our meal Ashley (front of house manager) came to our table with a chocolate birthday cake for dad. Then Scott (chef and co manager with Ashley) came over with a bottle of 'Fizz'. Finn who works the bar was brilliant, very professional and good fun too, a rare combination. I recommend the Royal Oak without any hesitation. My partner and myself had rare opportunity to go and have Sunday lunch together, being local and hearing about the food & hospitality we decided to try to see for ourselves. It was better then we imagined, amazing food and portions, welcoming staff, food was serviced quickly from starter to main, homely atmosphere with log fire. Will definalty visit again and try the brie bites

We had a fabulous meal at The Royal Oak a few weeks ago, marred only by the attitude of one female member of staff who we believe to be the landlady. Despite the shaky start (and refusal to offer a side salad instead of potatoes & veg with a main meal, but charging extra), we gave it another try as we live in walking distance and eat and drink in the village regularly with both family and friends.Upon seeing a blackboard outside offering 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £25, we booked a table for 6 people. When we arrived at our table, I noticed a sign on the bar showing the same offer for £30. I approached the bar to check the price, as I had told other members of my party the £25 price. The landlady said the price was £30. When I pointed out that her blackboard said £25, she said, aggressively, that was not the case. I invited her to step outside her front door, as it clearly still said £25! Now anyone can make a mistake, and we would've paid the £30, but for the attitude with which this was said. The landlady then walked past, told us she was "tired", and couldn't be bothered to argue, and we could have the deal for £25. She then proceeded to tell us there were only 2 steaks left anyway. At this point we left. Sounds petty, but it was all in the attitude. What a shame! We really wanted The Royal Oak to be successful. We would've been down there every weekend, to enjoy their fabulous food. Unfortunately, this lady has no concept of customer service. A smile to your customer whilst grimacing inside is what should've happened - as we know after running a successful retail business for over 40 years ! The service industry is certainly no place for this lady. So, great place for food....but only if you like a little abuse as you hand over your hard earned cash! As for us? We'll walk the extra half mile to The Farmers where you're assured of a warm welcome, wander over to the Red Lion (great Landlord!) or drive to The Manor at Oxen Park - all supremely friendly establishments.

Called in here hoping for a friendly pleasant local pub but was disappointed.Staff member quite rude and unhelpful.Ordered drinks and asked for a menu to be told it was on the board... my disabled husband had to struggle through to see it. Why they can’t print it or even have a few chalkboard baffled me.Prices and availability of food was poor and £7 for a pint of lager and a Diet Coke was extortion.Left after our drinks and won’t bother going again.

Visited the Royal Oak while having a break in the lakes, we were all incredibly impressed at a lovely evening out. Great atmosphere, brilliant food and lovely staff. It was one of the families birthdays and we all had a lovely night. There was a good selection of food on the menu and good selection of beers and spirits. Can honestly recommend!

Dropped in for an evening meal while on holiday after reading the web page - there were no local beers at all and the beer on draught was at best mediocre; the available local "spirits" were presumably ghostly as they were absent too. Didn't stay for food but judging by what was coming out of the kitchen we didn't miss much. The staff were not friendly and we were made to feel very uncomfortable. Avoid - there are much better pubs nearby!!!

Was taken here for Sunday lunch. Nice looking place which was the only plus. The staff I found rude and slow. There were only 2 other tables of people. It took them ages to take our food order. We both ordered roast beef. It arrived on very small cold plates. The beef was tough the vegetables were hard and cold, roast potatoes were burnt. As was taken by someone else who paid I didn't feel could complain thou am sure that would have fallen on deaf ears with the staff that where on duty. It was a let down after hearing how nice it was. It is some where that I will not be going back to

The hotel is situated in the small village of Spark Bridge at the end of Windermere on the way out of the lakes. New licencee's have just taken over, they were very friendly by the way, they appear to be sorting things out. The rooms have been redecorated and fresh, and are large with roof beams, but the bathrooms have saniflow toilets which are noisy!! Our telly did not work so we were moved, no problem. We had an evening meal there, good value a sirloin steak for £13.00!! Breakfast was a hot buffet again good quality. Our sleep was disturbed by people flushing the toilet during the night, but otherwise a pleasant stay. There is a steam train which runs to Lake Windermere nearby, where you can take the boat to Bo'ness, highly recommended.

The Royal oak is a fantastic cosy and comfortable inn. We had the family room for two nights, the room was spotless, well equipped, quiet and spacious. Beds very comfortable, drinks etc provided. The breakfast menu was comprehensive and the quality of the food was outstanding. I'm unable to comment on the evening meals as we ate out with family. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We will most definitely be paying the Royal oak another visit and would recommend this inn to anyone.

Enjoyed our overnight stay in the 'cottage'. Nice & clean though some grouting missing in shower & a bit of mould (we have problems with this at home so didn't put us off). Bath & hand towels & toiletries. Shower was easy to control & plenty of powerPlenty of space in separate lounge area with some lovely pieces of furniture, 2 seater settee, plenty of reading materials, games, tv & DVD player with a selection of dvd's. Loads of coffee, variety of teas & milk etc. No biscuits (ah well). Patio doors to decked area - it was not really used cos of the rain but lovely to watch a variety of birds & listen to the river which was quite high.Besides the plug in oil filled radiator there was also a log burner which we took advantage of. I know cleaner would remove ashes etc but a small brush & shovel would have been handyBed in bedroom was very very comfortable & we slept well. Bedroom was also nicely decorated & equipped with an electric wall heater & another oil filled plug- in.Given the weather we were glad we took our dressing gowns with us as we would have been a bit cold even with the heating provided in the rooms. The umbrellas provided in the entrance porch were also very useful. On a negative note my husband thought the cottage smelled damp & although I saw some evidence on patio wall (with some broken guttering) I personally couldn't smell any damp.About the pub:-Quite 'old worldy' with lots of interesting pictures to look at a a couple of log fires. Drinks were reasonably priced (almost £4 cheaper than in a pub/hotel we called in on way up).Our original plan had been to go into Ulverston for our evening meal (as special occasion) but as there had been an accident on the main road & apparently a fire somewhere nearby we decided to eat in the pub.We had already had a snack on arrival & I can say the mushroom soup I had was really gorgeous & hubby gave his tuna mayonnaise sandwich 10/10.For our evening meal hubby opted for the fish & chips which he really enjoyed & I had the lamb cutlets (3 large) in a minted sauce & I also enjoyed my meal. Given the above we both felt the main menu was a bit ordinary & thought if we were staying for a few nights we may have been pushed to select something (also because we don't like some of the choices anyway) different every evening. The breakfast was a breakfast not bad not great but filled a 'hole' & there was a choice of options besides the 'full English'We would return when the weather improves as the staff & locals (the pub was full in the evening) were friendly & helpful.A final comment & nothing to do with pub or accommodation. Why is Spark Bridge not sign posted - neither sat nav or google maps functioned properly - we drove past the turning off the main road twice before taking a chance & luckily getting it right.

We stayed at the pub for one night and were fortunate to have the 'Cottage' which is a self contained unit at the rear of the pub and comprises a large lounge, bedroom, en-suite and a patio area. The lounge has a log burner, TV, DVD and tea making facilities. The en-suite has a large shower, basin and toilet and although we did not know at the time has underfloor heating. Breakfast was great with a range of cooked options as well as toast, cereal, fruit juice and yoghurt available. We also ate in the evening and the meals were hearty particularly the lamb chops. The pub also serves local cask ales on 2-3 handpulls depending on season and a selection of wines and gins. Although not dog owners the pub does allow dogs on leads in both the rooms and dining areas. There is not a lot in Spark Bridge but it is about 5 miles to Ulverston, 10 to Coniston so there are things to do nearby. There is also a small TV area to the side of the bar which shows sports.

Such a cosy pub full of friendly people serving fresh, tasty food and a good variety of ales (and toffee vodka! Delicious!). We took our dog with us to stay and the room was gorgeous - sometimes I feel short changed when I take my dog because you get stuffed into a room that never quite looks as well looked after as the others, but not this time! Loved it!

Booked a night away with my hubby and 6 yr old daughter. It's situated in a lovely little village 5miles from Ulverston. There was just one lady in there on arrival no idea who she was as didn't introduce herself as the owner. On appearance lovely room but the window was covered by perspex which I couldn't get my head around. Made plans to go to the laurel and Hardy museum hubby a big fan, easy to find and car park nearby. Some very nice quaint shops. Decided to eat at the pub.The food was lovely kitchen upstairs which I've never seen before in a pub! This is when it went downhill, sat on our bed and could feel all the springs. Hardly slept and ended up getting in my daughters bed. The toilet system was the noisiest thing I have ever heard which also kept me and my hubby awake. All had a cooked breakfast which we enjoyed. Limited choice in other foods no fruit ect and only given a mug of coffee wasn't offered a top up. The lady didn't ask anything about us or asked if we had slept well as I would of told her about the mattress. Only three rooms not hard to maintain! If it hadn't of been for the good food and setting I would of been really disappointed

Have driven passed here many times but never eaten here so on a trip back from Barrow we decided to make a detour and have lunch here. Lovely country pub, staff very friendly with quick service, had to wait a little while for the meal to arrive but there were a few people who had ordered before us. The meals were hot but there didn't look a lot on the plate (sorry obsessed with size matters) but being honest it was surprisingly filling and I couldn't fault the meal or the place, I do have more favoured places I would choose to eat at but that's just my choice and yes I would eat here again.

We called into the Royal Oak on spec as it had been quite a few years since we last ate here. Well we were very pleasantly surprised on this cooling autumnal evening, greeted with a cosy open fire roaring in the grate, a welcoming bar, nice clean tables and a warm welcome from the staff. We noticed quite a few tables were reserved (it was Saturday night though), but the staff were very helpful and found us a table for four. After ordering drinks at the bar we selected our meals from a quite extensive, but traditional pub menu. There was some interesting specials on the board too. Our food was very good, served at a relaxed pace and was piping hot and very tasty. We enjoyed our drinks and meal in this traditional, warm and welcoming pub. It is what you expect from a Lakeland pub, just remember it is a pub and not a Michelin restaurant and you will be fine. We could of quite happily set into the bar for a great evening session, but regrettably we had to set off home.

Went here for lunch, drove 20 miles to get there after reading some of the reviews about the food. Walked in and there were only four people sitting, studying menus and two people standing at the bar. No welcome or anyhting from behind the bar. I had to go and get some menus off a heap at the end of the bar. I have not been here for years and they do not appear to have spent a penny on the decor or refurbishment in that time. The tables look like they are in a competition for the most mis-matched set ever and were old and stained,The dining chairs stuck to the carpet when you moved them to sit down. The menu was the usual pub fare and the prices were above average for this area. Most pubs in this region offer some sort of lunch-time 2 course menu - not here. You do not pay good money to eat in such poor surroundings. We walked out and went up the hill to the Red Lion where for some unexplained reason they were not doing food. So we drove to the 'Old Farmhouse' in Ulverston (about 10 miles away) where we had a nice lunch in very pleasant and clean surroundings @ £9.50 for a 2 course special lunch and an excellent pint of Cumberland ale.

We had a two night stay at the Royal Oak as we were visiting nearby Holker Hall to attend the BBC's Antiques Roadshow. The pub itself is a cosy, friendly proper country pub set in a very small village in the South Lakes. There is plenty of parking space and a pleasant beer garden at the rear. Our room was lovely and clean with attractive decorations and a very comfortable bed.The ensuite was a little on the small size, but more than adequate providing you are ok with no bath and just a shower. Some of the other rooms have baths so perhaps take that into consideration if it is important to you when booking. The meals were excellent and reasonably priced. Plenty to choose from on the menu and a daily specials board. The breakfast was also plentiful with our full English served up piping hot and full of local produce.Anna and Phil are excellent hosts and you are immediately made to feel comfortable and at home. The wifi access although a bit quirky, was more than adequate considering the pub's location. All in all we had a brilliant short break and will hopefully return to the Royal Oak before too long.

Overall good place the staff are great and very welcoming. The food was good not excellent but good. The rooms were clean and well laid out. The detail around the edges is where it falls away from excellent. We were above the porch where smokers liked to stand so we had the effect of that and an extractor output ended right by the window. Lovely location on the edge of the Lake District made it a nice stop over as we started our route home.

We have eaten and drank here for over four years now and have seen management change hands. The parking is great, as is the location. The pub itself has real character. The new owners have made an effort to modernize the interior but in our humble view; have failed with cheap fixtures and fittings and sub standard food. This is a real shame as the potential here, with some creativity, foresight and investment is huge. However, the pub always seems busy when we attend and clearly the current situation seems suited to many. However, we have decided that we shall not be returning after another sub standard meal.

Nice old place, log fire. Thursday night, with only two other tables occupied, though we took no notice of the tables to the right of the way in, where folk could be away from the bar,( and out of sight from where we sat)Another friend and I used to go there every few months several years ago-always good food, but the then owners retired and the place was empty for a few months. My Argentine Tango partner and I visited after practice in a nearby hall.Neither of us wanted a main meal so we ordered two starters each. This seems to be an unusual event as kitchen sent the waiter back to confirm we did not want a main. Eventually three of the starters arrived. My partner never got her salad plate, but didn't feel like pressing the matter beyond saying I should make sure we weren't charged for it-we weren't.I had a black pudding mixed plate and it was worth eating. Each of us had a spicy stuffed pepper-that too was enjoyable. Nor did we want a sweet courseBoth of us expect to return..

Visited here one lunch time recently. The place was empty when we arrived but after been unable to dine at the previous two places we visited we decided we would dine here. The menu had a vast selection ranging from soups and sandwiches to full meals, great choice and eventually we decided to order a tear and share garlic bread and garlic mushrooms to start. The mushrooms, well there was 3 small mushrooms chopped and served on 1/2 a slice of bread. The sauce was delicious but the portion size was on the small side.As of the garlic bread, we debated whether this was homemade or not in house but came to the conclusion that it probably wasn't. It was lovely but far too much herbs on the underside of the bread... Very little on top, ? Served upside down..Mains considered of fish and chips and steak and Guinness pie.The fish was more of a fish tail rather than a piece of fish, average in taste and served with home-made chips which were too thick and dry.The pie came out very dry and looked as through it had been left under heat lamps/in the oven to dry out for too long. The taste was better than it looked, also served with chips and a side salad in a bowl.Service was below average considering the place was empty and we were never asked if our food was okay hence this view.Would we return? Probably not I'm afraid.

Barmaid wanted £36. I said, "£36 for two puddings and a pint and a half?" She immediately reconsidered. "It's £29.50.". She printed me a receipt and said, "You asked for extra custard. Life isn't free, sir." I had indeed asked for extra custard, for which I had only been charged a pound. But obviously, people who query bar bills in the Lakes are regarded as the lowest form of scroungers.
