Lovely little Pub never overly busy but nice and cosy! The Sunday lunch is nice Roughly £10-12 and tasty! The pub has a small selection of beer but ample. The staff are nice and friendly we’ve eaten here a lot and it’s worth a visit.. on a nice sunny day you can sit out and either sit in the yard or next to the river. Highly recommended.

We booked a table about half an hour before setting off from ponciau. As soon as we came in, we were met with a very confused look from the poor member of staff who had no idea about our reservation. She went into the kitchen I assume to try and call the chef who had gone home. It's the first time we've managed to get out together since we've had our baby. Very disappointed. The girl who spoke to us was lovely, but a reservation shouldn't be confirmed if theirs no chef to make the food.

After we had visited the Church over the road, well, when I say Church, I mean a museum in the church, which was fascinating and filled with local info, including the talking monk. We popped in the Oak for a drink, and had a great welcome from Ben. We asked if we could stay in the car park at the back, in our self-contained motorhome. Absolutely no problem, as we would have some snacks too. I went back in and ordered some chips and some more drinks and met the lovely landlady Olivia. She could not have been more hospitable and friendly. The drinks were great, although never heard of a dimpled handle. A good price and we slept very soundly out the back. Would I return? Absolutely !!!!!

Stopped here for lunch while out for a walk, both of us had the fish and chips, the food was lovely, not the greatest of portions, however neither of us had a desert because we were full after eating the f&c's. I'm sorry to say, the service was very poor. As far as I could see there were only 2 other tables occupied, but it took 1.5 hours for our food to arrive. After passing a little comment to the waiter, I asked how long desert would take and was told "don't worry, I'll make sure it comes straight out to you". My friends desert arrived fairly promptly, but nothing for me. The waiter told the chef and she went to get it. 20 minutes later it arrived. Bread and butter pudding, but it was smothered with the type of red sauce you get on an icecream, Disgusting. I am sorry, but I will not be frequenting The Royal Oak again.

Visited over the August bank holiday weekend (Sunday afternoon) and although it was quiet in town there were a few in here making plenty of noise so we ventured in. We got served quickly and the lady serving was very polite and friendly. We ordered a pint and a glass of wine and were quite shocked when it came to almost £12. More so because it was the third pub we had been in and everywhere else on the high street was between £7-9 for a similar order. We didn't stop for another drink.

Why is it all Joules pubs are so good? This one certainly does not disappoint apart from the understandable 4:00 pm opening on a Thursday afternoon. Only the two cask ales on today but the Blonde ale is such an easy drinker. Well worth a visit if only to read up about the history of the place - a truly impressive building.

Not quite so on the dinner visit for my wife & me. The Royal Oak location is attractive, sitting near the River Dee and its circa 1660 five-arch stone bridge. The car park out back was much larger than I expected, and I'm sure an appreciated feature by customers on busy days & nights. The building practically screams: 'Welsh pub!' outside & indoors, while the interior dining areas are cozy & well lit. The rear patio spaces look very inviting for relaxing after a day of walking or getting wet in the river. And the table service we received was friendly & appropriately attentive, including the waitress thoughtfully advising us of the service charge policy before we received our final bill (which is becoming increasingly common where we live in order to attract & retain service staff). Unfortunately, our dishes did not live up to those clearly positive points, falling short of the equivalent pub/restaurant meals we had during our holiday week in the area. My wife was disappointed with her Homemade Steak & Ale Pie, while my Signature Fish & Chunky Chips with Mushy Peas were just average. Observing the bar traffic and the families gathering outside for beverages & "Small Treats" during our Friday evening visit, I concluded those two aspects of the Royal Oak business are their strong points. Their meals could use some more focused attention to reach an 'unparalleled dining' status.

Lovely food, Sunday lunch now £12.50 which used to be £10. Have visited many times, although lately the meat has been a little tough. Main problem is the service charge which is added onto the bill. I don’t mind leaving a tip, but don’t like it just to be added to the bill. Have heard a lot of diners complaining about this, which is a shame as they won’t return. Lovely setting and really want this place to stay open. So a note to the management get rid of the charge and the diners will return.

Been here a few tomes & lovely spot right by the river. Staff are brilliant, really good service & friendly. Beer is really good, although only one draft on when we visited, which is fine as its a good one 🙂 Can't fault the service. Portion sizes are good & a fair selection of options for Sunday roast, which is a bargain at £10. And the veg & Yorkshire puds were fab - just a lot of gravy - kinda drowned it for me. And I opted for the ham - which was not nice at all. The small amount of meat I had was very fatty & did not taste mice at all. Probably just an u lucky plate as rest of party were happy with theirs. The puddings were huge - I didn't have one but they looked amazing & feedback was positive so think they were a hit! Really sad about the meat - it won't deter me from coming again though - the beer, staff & location are worth the trip!

The minute I walked through the door I knew I had made a mistake. The place was dead! No atmosphere whatsoever mainly because of the miserable staff standing around bored out of their minds. But I thought stick with it. I was there for a meal. This place used to be good. Not so anymore. It was awful. The food was bearly edible. It looked good but it wasn't. The beef was more suitable for shoe soles. I discreetly gave the staff every opportunity to resolve it but they just didn't pick up on my subtle comments. The meal was half eaten and no one asked why. We didn't stay for pudding. The final insult was the discretionary service charge on the bill (why is this 70s thing making a comeback?!). I was so disillusioned I couldn't be bothered to strike it off although I was very tempted. Considering the place was empty the service was far from brilliant. This place needs reviving. I predict it will soon be up for sale like all the other places they own. Dreadful. Dreadful. Dreadful.

We visited tonight as a table of 11 as having a holiday as a group of friends traveling around wales must say the food was excellent and served on time and hot bar service was a bit hectic young man stood behind the bar only seemed to serve the regulars. On paying up and going I advised that my wife would be staying as we all were going to the next village for an hour and would come back to collect her the hound lady behind the bar said no problem that she would be looked after. I received a call to say the bar lady told my wife that they would be closing as the owner had said if less that 5 people are in then close as it was other locals came in and were surprised that the pub was still open. We spent £50.00 on drinks and the party’s bill for food was over £150.00 you think they would be happy for the custom. They won’t stay in business long if that is the owners attitude outside lights turned off at 8.45pm. The chef is good at what he does.

We are from Cardiff. We found The Royal Oak on trip adviser and booked a day in advance after other restaurants were fully booked. We ordered 3 adult roasts as our son is 13. A chicken, beef and sausage. The sausage roast arrived as a child’s vegetarian, the sausage was advertised as a Cambridge sausage with rosemary, we were expecting meat. When we questioned if the meal was correct we received no apology nor an offer of replacement. At the top of the menu it stated all roasts came with a Yorkshire pudding. However only the chicken came with one so we had to order AND pay for extras after the meals arrived. If this is the case the menu should be amended as it is made clear on the menu that the chicken roast only comes with stuffing but not the Yorkshire puddings. There was a long wait for drink top ups to which we had to ask for than be offered. When they finally arrived we’d already asked for the bill so they were sent back. Both young blonde waitresses were stressed, clearly not experienced nor had a friendly manner. I’m not sure why this was as it was lunch time at it was far from busy!Covid- lots of hand sanitiser available and the poster prompting to use the track and trace on arrival. Tables too close together. 3 men sounding Liverpudlian entered and stated they did not have face masks and asked did the pub have spares. The waitress replied they didn’t but did not ask them to leave nor hurry them to be seated, after some time at the bar they decided to be eventually seated inside. I am a nurse who nurses with covid positive patients in FULL ppe for 12 hour shifts. So I found this extremely frustrating.

The food though exceeded all our expectations, it was some of the best pub food we have had for a long time and better than many restaurants we’ve visited in the past. We had the grilled haddock special, sweet potato and mac cheese ( a somewhat unusual option but gorgeous!) and the beetroot and goats cheese salad; all were very tasty, generous portion sizes and extremely good value for money. Called here on the off-chance after discovering our usual haunt was out of action due to a gas problem and the first alternative venue we tried was only serving a Sunday lunch menu - we both fancied steak. We called ahead first and although they had lots of bookings they said to pop in. We were one of the first in for the lunch service and ordered quickly so we were at the front of the line but still was impressed with how quickly our food arrived. Getting drinks was quick too so on the service front, it was great all round.Husband had garlic mushrooms and I had prawn cocktail to start. Both really fresh and full of flavour. We both had rib eye steak for main and both agreed they were the best steaks we've had in a while. Cooked to perfection (medium) and really good quality meat. Chips, mushrooms and tomatoes on the side were also spot on. Nothing too greasy or overcooked. We had a blue cheese sauce which couldn't be faulted.Cost wise, a little bit pricier than your standard pub grub but the quality of what you get reflects this so it's still value for money and I'll definitely be going back to try the other items on the menu. I've given this place 5 stars because it deserves it but if there was one thing I did have to cite as an need for attention it would be the very tiny issue of the sauce for the steak coming out a little later than the main meal. It wasn't to the extent that the meal had been eaten so nothing major at all.

Fancying some homemade pub food my husband and I called in here, pub was pretty empty and lacked atmosphere. Asked for food menjes and enquired about the pie of the day, to be told it was steak and mushroom with short crust pastry, served with chunky chips and seasonal vegetables. I ordered the home made smoked haddock fish cakes promised to be served with home made tartare sauce, the journey begins! The pie dish was was nothing short of rubbish, it came in a small ceramic dish with a slab of shop bought short crust pastry on top and drooped carelessly on the sides, burnt to a crust and inedible on the sides of the dish, now get to the filling (needed glasses to spot a hint of steak) and the hunt for mushrooms still continues, the gravy was thin and runny, we highly suspect it was just cheap tinned meat! Frozen chips and two pieces of frozen cauliflower and broccoli were strewn on the plate! The fishcakes were all potatoes with barely any fish, served with a scanty salad and the cheapest blob of mayonnaise I've ever tasted. The waitress was a pleasant young lady and we did not want to embarrass her by complaining, safe to say we will not be visiting again!

Not our normal place to visit, but running late so called in to give it a try. Nice brightly lit car park and lovely interior was an excellent start to our visit. We were made to feel very welcome Tuesday evening last week.

We visited for dinner with family. As always an excellent meal and superb service. The staff are always friendly and accommodating. We are local to The Royal Oak so are regular visitors and we are never disappointed. I cannot understand the reviewer who chose to say nothing whilst on the premises and then gave a scathing review on Trip Advisor. If the meal was so bad why not give them an opportunity to rectify the situation. Speaking from experience the food and service is always first class and we are lucky to have such an establishment in the village. A lovely location by the river especially in good weather when you can dine Al fresco.

I love this place and it's obvious Stacey knows how to run a good ship, however sort the cash out and get contactless payment options. It's the 21 centuary , plus if I don't have cash on me I will unfortunately avoid the place. The amount of times I have been in and people try pay with card and are shocked. Anyway part from that overall a very nice establishment.

So disappointed by our meal. Chips were frozen and not made from proper potatoes as they used to be. My burger was so dry and tough, if I wasn’t so hungry I would have sent it back. Dread to think of the poor quality of meat that went in to it. I would have given feedback at the time (or my homemade burger recipe!) however no one asked us how our meal was, even when our plates were not empty when cleared. This is a local pub for us and it is so disappointing to see it produce such poor quality food at a price that is far from cheap. It appears to rely on its pretty location for ‘tourist’ custom. Please sort this out- we want to support you but you let yourselves and your locals down.

Very bland and extremely dissatisfied with the level of service by staff. Paid the best part of £75 for a meal with our friends and we all left hungry. Tried to give feedback to staff after paying the bill and we were greeted with shrugged shoulders and being spoken about by the staff who were all just standing around as we walked out. Really wouldn’t recommend if you’re passing by!

Love this place, I've been quite a few times in the past and i think the food is always great, just like home cooked with a great selection of really good quality meats, the staff are really helpful and there are traditional ales behind the bar, (not sure how often they change there guest ales), they have an xmas menu out at the moment so I may be making another visit 😋
