The Royal Oak in Wigan

Came for my partners birthday yesterday as we had booked afternoon tea a couple of weeks ago, asked if there were any dietary requirements and I stated no fish. We were booked in for 2pm and didn't receive our food until 2.35pm. What arrived was a complete letdown to what we'd had before. 1 finger sandwich each and half a roll each with Tuna on when I'd specifically said no fish. The bread was stale, the afternoon tea was advertised as having cheesecake but there was none. There was an odd number of mini sausage rolls and then we saw the missing ones on the floor near a table on the floor as we left 🙈🤣 everything was dry/stale. It's £12.50 each with tea/coffee or £16.50 with gin/prosecco. Can honestly say it wasn't even worth £12.50 for 2. The lady who served us was lovely and when asked we did tell her and she took one of the afternoon teas off the bill, we did say it's ok we'll pay as we had ate the most of it (we were starving) but she knocked it off anyway which was really kind of her. Unfortunately for us we won't be returning for food as we felt totally let down as it was a special occasion. The pub, the atmosphere and staff are fab, however I'm not sure what's gone on with the food side but it isn't like it used to be.

Called in here when our original chosen venue wasn't open ? .. talk about all coming good ..guy behind the bar was super helpfull chatty and welcoming had a real ale on which happened to be a porter which made me very happy the food was really good absolutely no complaints top notch the outside area looked nice so hope to get back when the weather is better just out side wigan town centre a five minute walk from primark give it a try you won't be disappointed

Great, fresh food (and excellent vegetarian/vegan options) with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are approachable and helpful too. The beer garden is brilliant, and very spacious. My favourite pub in Wigan!

We always seem to struggle to get a roast on a Sunday, either they've run out or it's a long wait, but when we can get one, it's excellent. The rest of the menu is decent pub grub, with a few vegan options. They always have at least 1 cask ale, and a broad selection of interesting flavoured rums etc. on the back bar. Massive outdoor seating area with heaters, so you'll usually get a table somewhere. Staff always seem to look stern & serious at all times, but they're attentive and very efficient & helpful. The music can be a bit noisy sometimes but if you let them know it's bothering you, they do turn it down!

Barked "that doesn't start till tomorrow" specials menu. Walked out.

Absolutely dreadful.!! Poor Food, overpriced, poor service. Ordered gammon and cheese onion pie. Order came after an hour of waiting, Gammon was either overcooked or warmed up from the day before it was dry as a bone. Chips and mushy peas had been stood too long and the chips were nearly black!!! Cheese and onion pie came swimming in brown gravy which wasn't stipulated on the menu although it was changed with another 15 minutes. Nobody came across to see if the meals were ok. Won't be going there again.!!! Had to give at least one star would not be given any if I could. Not recommended

Not been here for years so was amazed at the transformation. Real good layout and atmosphere. Particularly good in summer when full advantage can be made of the huge beer garden

Called in for a pint at lunchtime, a great selection of beers, bar staff friendly and had a nothing was a problem attitude which I found a refreshing change. Menu looks excellent with a wide range of choices including a tempting breakfast menu which I hope to sample soon

We found this great pub by chance, and we had a warm welcome from the landlords. Really shat you would want a traditional English pub be. We gave now gone back a second time and sitting in the large, well designed beer garden. We are coming back to wigan again next week and will definitely be returning.

We didnt eat here but been told the food is lovely. Recently taken over by Blake - who is very friendly. Venue is nice and lively Friday, Saturday and Sunday, good prices beer wise. Band that was playing outside in the nice sunshine was called Woodstock (live band with no backing tracks)& went down very well with the patrons. Inside was much nicer cleanliness wise than last time I was there. Give the place ago.

Very quiet night on my visit but still waited several minutes to be served with only myself at the bar. Beer was very good. Can't comment on the food as I didn't eat there. The host was very pleasant and efficient

The pub is lovely, the service was not very good at all we waited about three quarters of an hr to eat 😀 & to be fair I was not impressed with my food. I have eaten there before ; it was excellent. So hopefully it was a one off bad day.

Came for festive afternoon tea, staff friendly polite and friendly, food was fantastic and very good portion sizes, atmosphere was nice, fairly busy and people just enjoying themselves.

Absolutely wonderful find near to the flat I was staying in. From the moment my husband and I walked into the Royal Oak, we were treated so warmly and the great service continued throughout our visit. We had food and drinks and both were really good. The food was high standard pub grub, just what's needed on a dark, wet night. There was plenty of it too! Every customer who walked in was greeted in the same kind, friendly manner as we were. Actually the barman knew many of the regulars by name and took time to speak with them. The pub unexpectedly had to close, as there were only my husband and I and another couple of patrons, so not enough people in to justify it staying open. We were so happy with the Royal Oak, that we chose to return the following evening. If we're ever in Wigan again we will definitely head to this pub - good food, good drinks selection, a proper welcome and a relaxed atmosphere; we couldn't want for anything more.

Decent sized pub with a good selection of beers available on tap, they have screens with live sport. They even had a live musician which was a real delight

Went in for a drink after a meal before our taxi arrived, fight broke out, challenged one of the perpetrators for knocking my full drink over me and ended up getting assaulted and thrown against the wall, my husband was punched and had his glasses broken by the perpetrators husband and friends and bar staff were not in the least interested when we asked for help. If it wasn't for a few customers who witnessed what happened and came to our aid, I don't know what the result would have been. Police arrived but would not listen to us as we weren't part of the original cause of the raucous. Suffice to say we won't be returning anytime soon. Comes to something when you can't even enjoy a quiet drink as a couple in town anymore!

I didn't get any food, but I've been the royal Oak a few times now and it's always been a pleasant experience would highly recommend if you just want a quiet one with friends and there beer garden is top notch

Had afternoon tea. We didn't enjoy the cheesecake and the scones are dry but otherwise it was good. Definitely worth the price. Clean toilets and nice atmosphere. Their breakfast is amazing though.

Went for food a few drinks and a catch up. Food here is so good, the salt and pepper chips are amazing and so more-ish, there was also a live singer on who was really good. Definitely worth a visit

Update: On a recent visit on a hot sunny May afternoon the beer garden was packed indicating this is a popular place. We sat outside at the front until the heat of the day drove us inside. Cool and sorry inside, nicely decorated plenty of places to sit Not been in here since it was refurbished inside and out. The refurb is really good especially the outside area. Lots of space outside. Only drawback for me was there was only a couple of hand pumped real ales on. Not a drawback for my friends drinking Guinness and lager.

Pizza was not cooked sent it back .. came back raw again .... If you're advertising that your good at something, and you have a pizza oven to make a good product ..make it ... The pizza came from the kitchen X 2 .. raw .. .. salt and pepper chips were good

Came today 13 April for afternoon tea and it was brilliant, lovely food with a good selection of sweet and savoury food will definitely come again thanks so much to all the staff 😀 😊

Decent pub, with a good multi roomed interior, only 1 ale on at the time of my visit. Local opinion suggests it used to be better.

Love our sunday roast. But would like mash potatoes and softer cooked veg. Also cauliflower cheese would be nice. But the meat melts in ya mouth gravy like home made. Staff amazing nothing too much trouble. Nice nice and friendly. Luv it. X

We had afternoon Tea and it was amazing. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly. The only thing that we didn't like was that you only received one drink with no refills.

Lovely cosy pub. The food was fantastic and the staff so caring. We had the Christmas menu and OMG the arancini were to die for!!!! Not many vegetarian options, but the beetroot salad was divine as well. It was world cup time when we went so it was packed. Absolutely recommend though even on a busy night

MeGan (Megan) was brilliant. We booked for 8 of us with afternoon tea. We were looked after from the moment we walked in. We were celebrating a VERY special occasion and they did NOT disappoint. We had a fab time.
