Super tasty bar lunch, very reasonably priced, friendly staff with clean premises, thankyou Royal will be back

We stayed in the family room and it was spotlessly clean. The rooms have all been refurbished to a very high standard with a modern feel. The staff were very friendly and made sure nothing was too much trouble. We'd definitely recommend this small, convenient hotel.

Wow what else can we say. We have just had 3 lovely nights at this hotel & we would 100% recommend a stay here if you’re in the area. It has recently been refurbished & it is beautiful. The rooms are modern & spacious, the restaurant is bright & modern & as for the food, every meal we had including the Scottish breakfast was first class. We can honestly say that Simon & his team deserve this review nothing was too much trouble for any of them in fact they went above & beyond what you would expect. Excellent food. The Sunday roast is well worth it and their cheese cake never dissapoints. Partner's Scampi was generous.

Another fantastic meal at this local Hotel. Food and service was excellent. BYOB also available with £11 per bottle corkage. Extensive menu and everything cooked fresh.

Visiting the area and decided to pop in for lunch. Great food - freshly prepared and serviced nice and hot. Staff were friendly and helpful too. Would definitely go back if in the area.

Stayed 12 and 13th August 2024. Very friendly staff. Welcoming. Room was immaculate and included tea/ coffee facilities. Excellent sized bathroom with walk in shower. Breakfast included which was personally delivered to the table by the chef and was freshly cooked. Nice pub attached with good drink selection. The room key included an electronic key tag that opened the hotel front door and inner staircase door so it felt very secure. Parking was around the back in a shopping centre private car park and, although sign posted that hotel patrons were not allowed, the hotel staff assured us it was OK. We parked there 3 days without a ticket so maybe we were just lucky. We had a family meal there and really enjoyed the good and service. Very good menu. Will stay there again next time I visit relatives.

We were there on the 1st August and back again on the 3rd August 2024. Both times the service and meals were excellent. The staff are really friendly and look after you well. The food is delicious and piping hot.

My Dad and New Mum had the 1st wedding ceremony to be held in The Royal Hotel including meal and reception package and omg it was absolutely amazing from the night before to the end of the post wedding breakfast. The staff are amazing, attentive and catered for our every need, the Function Room was transformed into a beautiful intimate wedding venue for 22 of our immediate family, with an amazing wedding meal picked by the bride and groom and then onto the evening celebrations with their local singer Cathrine Thomson and resident DJ Byron. The hotel rooms are well kept and maintained to an excellent standard. I would absolutely recommend the hotel for any function from the food to the drinks to the entertainment, thank you so much to all the staff including Ciara, Carrie, Hannah and Chris for the amazing service throughout the day, Ciara who was a life saver with helping to capture the photos, Ina and Dougie for all the pre preparation, the kitchen and chefs for the beautiful food as well Sie and Happy for accommodating us all and helping us to make this special day for the very happy couple xx

Although the place has no particular charm, we were pleasantly surprised with how our dishes came out as well as their quality. Their « snack » section was great! Besides, service was very obliging and helped us non-native English speakers making the right choices.

Having never been to this area before, we couldn’t decide where to go for our evening meal. I am so glad we found this lovely hotel. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by friendly staff in a nice environment. The menu had an excellent variety of meals and the service was quick. The staff are an absolute asset to this hotel. They were all welcoming, polite and efficient. We already can’t wait to visit again in the future!

We stayed here for a night as we had a wedding at the weekend, I couldn’t fault this place! Rooms were immaculate and had everything we needed, staff especially Simon went above and beyond to help and just make our stay comfortable and relaxed! We just felt so at ease during our stay there and would definitely recommend and come back! Also breakfast was 10/10 it felt a home away from home!

First time visiting the Royal since family moved to Penicuik. Stopped by for some food. The portions were very generous and tasted amazing. The Haggis Balls were excellent and the Pulled Pork was too. Friendly service, prompt and a very nice establishment. Worth checking out when in town.

You have to be here, the ambience and service are great. The food is perfect and you feel like you are at home.

I just had a lovely stay at the royal hotel, the staff were friendly outgoing and helpful. My room was ready early and from the moment you open the door, the room is lovely from top to bottom very clean and homely with a kettle, refreshments, TV, en suite bathroom with sliding shower and a place for clothes and electrical appliances. They ensure you know how to use the keys system which is great security and peace of mind. Your order for breakfast is taken in preparation for the next day and time you wish with a lovely table prepared in the morning with friendly staff there to assist all they way and always with a smile. Restaurant and bar available down stairs for great convience. The staff were extraordinary kind and helpful and ready to have a conversation and see how you and your day is going. Overall 5 star service from start to finish and will definitely be staying again. Si the manger was thee most down to earth person you could meet, who ensured my stay went smooth from start to finish, any queries or questions were met with quick and informed answers. Room 6 guest

Great place foe dinner. The staff was amazing and very accommodating for our group of weary travelers. The food was excellent as well, including the seabass, steak and ale pie, soup, and chicken kebab.

Three retired friends jumped on a bus from Loanhead. Had lovely lunch and Guinness. Food was good and service without a fault. We will return.

Went here to meet up with some old friends for a meal and a few drinks. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. If you like a chocolate brownie with ice cream for dessert then I can honestly say this is the best one I have ever had anywhere.

Food not good I had steakpie and chips with veg ,chips burnt ,cauliflower basically raw turip/carrots overcooked Chicken pizza not much topping bit overcooked Portobello mushrooms with chips and side of cauliflower cheese raw barely cooked . Service was slow waited over 3omins for food which was served as above. Service we were going to have dessert and coffee but waited over 30 mins again and no waitress attended to see if we wanted dessert ,too busy chatting to table next to bar or on her phone ,tried to catch her when she was at the table next to us but just ignored us so we got up from table , paid bill and left. Won't be back . Service atrocious

Customer service is absolutely 110 percent fantastic I have been in a lot of hotels and this one is the best they know how to look after there guests and would highly recommend them to anyone food is fantastic bedroom fantastic staff are excellent

Lovely food in the restaurant. Very welcoming, helpful, friendly staff. They phoned ahead to check if we'd like a table or a booth for our booking, which was very kind of them. Prices are quite high, but that is the same as everywhere right now. Good portion sizes. Enjoyed the burgers and the steak pies. On our most recent visit to the restaurant section, there was a group of noisy guys at the booth behind us, basically shouting to each other and swearing a lot. The member of staff politely told them to quieten down and mind their language, without us having to say anything. This turned around the bad atmosphere and made it a lot more pleasant again. Thank you.

Absolutely amazing food. Served hot and quickly. Very nice staff easily identified by their "crew" shirts. We were a table of 20+ and they did a stellar job delivery everything as ordered. I had the Highland Burger, which was amazing. I would have had a sweet, but i was too full. So a nice white coffee filled the small gap i had left. I would definitely go here again. Recommended

Been out for a walk with the dog and we were looking for somewhere for a quick lunch and dog friendly. We were firstly welcomed by Jess (please forgive me if I have the name wrong) the pub spaniel and equally by the Bar Manager. We ordered from the snack menu, toastie with choice of chips and chilli chicken wrap with choice of chips, the chilli chicken and cheese wrap got a muffled nod of approval with a cheesy thumbs up and my toastie was everything you want in a cheese, ham and red onion toastie, including some of the best ham I’ve ever tasted. Thumbs up from me too, thank you the Royal Hotel Bar well done (I was told that the toilets were really clean too 10/10)

Food was excellent, service was excellent, we went to a family bday lunch there. There were other large groups and they had it all under control.

We visited with friends and our two dogs. We received a very warm welcome in the bar and even got water for the dogs. The food and drink was excellent, the chilli burger I had was superb, but all four of us loved what we had. Such a friendly place, really lovely staff and great service. And very reasonable too. The locals were also very welcoming, I really couldn't fault a thing, highly recommended.

What an accommodating, polite and helpful group of staff. It was such a nice place to go for a nice meal. Very nice selection of foods at that too, the normal chunky chips and steak pie especially. Had Sunday roast lamb. Although plenty of lamb it was dry, tough and over cooked. They had no Yorkshire puds and the vegetable portions were miserly. So basically meat and mashed/roast potatoes. And at £20 😮🤔. In the area for a week but won't be visiting again.

We were a group of ten on a long weekend break, booked into the royal for lunch but we arrived a couple of hours early, all the boys to the bar and the girls to the lounge for a few drinks. The atmosphere in the bar was superb everyone was so friendly the two guys behind the bar were comedians that serve beer they were so attentive as soon as your drink was empty there was another there straight away, to lunch. Service was second to none, nothing was too much trouble and the food was fresh and cooked to perfection..steak was excellent. On the whole we spent about 5-6 hours in the place and it was a pleasure and a bit of a retch to leave if we are honest, we can’t rate the place enough.. well done and we will be back..

Excellent service and wonderful food

Ideal for an informal meal with a few friends/family. Friendly staff, great menu, generous portions & very tasty. I recommend the wings, they are delicious. The fish was more like a whale fillet (in size) sitting on a bed of chunky chips (Personally, I'm not a fan of this as the chips & fish start to become soggy)... but did not detract from the overall taste! I would definitely order again !

Die Chili Con Carne und die Fish und Ships waren sehr sehr lecker. Ebenso war die Menge auch genau richtig. Leider wurden wir von den Mitarbeitern eher übersehen. Wir mussten lange warten bis wir bestellen konnten. Die Karte mussten wir uns selber besorgen. Etwas weniger Chlor in der Cola würde mir auch besser gefallen. Da das Essen sehr gut war, würde ich trotzdem wieder kommen.

We stayed in Penicuik for its easy access to Edinburgh and ate in The Royal Hotel for all 3 nights we were there. We were welcomed warmly by all the staff we encountered and the variety of meals we sampled was delicious. No faults at all. One of our party of four needed gluten free and she was not disappointed. A wide variety of the menu was gluten free and it was evident that the whole team take it seriously and are constantly looking for ways to make more of the menu GF. The hand cut chips are a must (not GF as fried with other things)! We all highly recommend The Royal Hotel and hope to be back one day.

Booked a last minute room here due to work although I had stayed in another hotel locally for a few nights. I would definitely stay again, the newly refurbished rooms are done to a high standard and the bar and restaurant are more than adequate. Breakfast was great. The room I stayed in wasn't an ensuite although a private bathroom was just across the hall. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

A great wee find, our daughters dog was in for some treatment at Roslin pet hospital, my husband and I had a few hours to kill before picking him up, we decided to do some shopping and have lunch out! We went into Penicuik and discovered the Royal Hotel, smashing light lunch menu, plenty choice all freshly made, well presented, lovely friendly staff! Really felt so welcome, definitely will be back!

Hotel rooms are lovely, they have had some good money spent on them, breakfast is good, sausage could be better.

J'avais eu de très mauvais échos sur la cuisine écossaise ou britannique... J'ai été agréablement surpris! Le gérant est fort sympathique, le service de qualité. Nous avons commandé un Royal sandwich, un fish and chips et une salade. Les portions sont très importantes mais un doggy bag vous sera aimablement proposé. Le sandwich royal avait, sur la carte, un air de fourre-tout. Le mélange est tout à fait correct! Les cuissons parfaitement maîtrisées et la présentation est parfaitement adaptée au lieu. Je recommande un Irn Bru avec le sandwich Royal afin de parfaitement vous sentir dans un film de Guy Ritchie

A group of us stayed over on Saturday night and it was great. Nice rooms lovely breakfast and brilliant staff who were very friendly and helpful We will be back next year !!

Family meal on Friday night excellent as always. Mongolian Beef was tremendous. Service incredibly good.

Visited The Royal Hotel for the first time yesterday with my wife, not knowing what it was like so decided to have a drink in the bar first, excellent. Good music being played and a friendly dog keeping us entertained. Decided to try the food in the restaurant and we were not disappointed, food was excellent and couple of punters in there at the time, gave everyone staff included a good laugh. Met by mute disheveled person who unsmilingly flicked their head up in some primitive pre-vocal attempt of enquiry. Take note. Next place we tried, the waitress smiled, made a friendly quip about the weather, asked us if it was a table for two and smilingly escorted us to our seats.

Returned to the Royal after a gap of some years for lunch. Extensive menu of choices at reasonable prices. Asked for extra spicy pasta arrabiatta which was excellent followed by chocolate brownie. Service was attentive and will now be returning on a more regular basis.
