The Roman Bath Pub is a great city centre pub that always a joy to drop into. This is a really interesting looking pub, interior is superb,an island style serving bar, great decor and furnishings,tv's to enjoy the sport and plenty of seating options, the most distinctive feature of the pub is the great artwork around the walls depicting scenes of Roman life alluding to the Roman museum in the basement ,it's a proper chill out pub. We were here on a Monday evening, pub was busy,we ordered John Smiths Brewery bitter ,served in pristine condition,we just kicked back and took in the great pub we were in. I enjoy a good bitter,a much underrated beer style but when served iced gold as in this pub it's a totally refreshing brew. We both really enjoyed our visit here ,only stayed for one each before we moved on. The Roman Bath Pub is easy to locate on St Sampsons Square. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, open from 11am. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Walked in the door with my husband and a few of our friends in York for the day, to be met with looks of sheer disgust from the bar staff. We were immediately asked to leave. We hadn’t made loads of noise, or even asked for a drink. Completely judged possibly for our geordie accents. Do not visit here. Complete disgrace.

This is a very standard eatery but the service is good and the helpings plenty. It seems to be a popular place for local people and it was quite full. So that is a good sign. I gave it four stars because as a standard pub it was a lot better than most and good value.

Whilst on holiday in October half term, we googled a karaoke in York. What a deceptively good karaoke, on a Wednesday!! The night is obviously very popular with locals and is very lively. There wasn't a gap between songs, though we feel the hosts could add a bit of banter between singers. The bar staff were lovely, as well as the York residents we met. An amazing night out with a fab range of singers and songs and we want to go back! Peter and Emma T.

The Roman Bath Pub is a fine pub located on Sampson's Square, it's a pub I always look forward to visiting on any holiday I take to this most beautiful of city's. The pub interior is awesome, a solid wood serving bar dominates the main room, great decor and furnishings, beautiful wall art depicting scenes of Roman's relaxing in bath houses alluding to the fact their is a museum part of this pub showcasing Roman artifacts and ancient Roman baths ,these remains were uncovered during building work when this pub was built between 1929 - 1931 ,you can visit the basement museum for a small fee and visit the Tepidarium ( warm room ) Caldarium ( steam room ) Frigidarium ( plunge bath ) and view some interesting artifacts, theres also some great tiled work here, well worth checking out. My twin brother Stephen and I were here on an early Thursday evening, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of staff who served us a real ale each,we chose Timothy Taylor's " landlord " these real ales were served in pristine condition and at the right temperature,we just chilled out and took in the great pub we were in. My real ale was outstanding, Timothy Taylor's Brewery brew some great real ales and their " landlord " is a particular favourite of mine. The taste is so good, hints of citrus and caramel ,its a classic pale ale bursting with taste, very easy to drink, a crisp ,hoppy pale ale and at 4.3% a great session real ale. As my twin brother Stephen and I were pub hopping around York we only stayed for the one real ale each before we moved on and as on every other visit to The Roman Bath Pub we had a great time. The Roman Bath Pub is easy to locate on Sampson's Square. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, 11am till 11pm. A wonderful pub,an interesting pub, most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area.

The Roman Bath was a quiet meeting point where I could have a couple of drinks with my daughter. It's an interesting mix of fairly modern fixtures and fittings with Romanesque murals on the walls. It had the same feel as my local Italian. There is a Roman site under, but not part of the pub. I didn't visit on this occasion. It was nice to have a regular beer, Theakstons Best, instead of my typical quest for cask ales.

Situated in Sampsons Square, at first glance the 'Roman Bath' seems to be a fine example of what it would have actually looked like hundreds of years ago. Once inside however, you changes to a semi-modern / open plan area which seems somewhat incongruent with initial expectations.

This is my sort of pub. Real ale, good honest food, reasonably priced, great central location, room for family and fairly quiet. So we were in York for a family Christmas and we were looking for somewhere which would meet our needs (food, seats, beer, childern accomodated, no queue, warm). This fitted the bill. The menu is fairly limited, especially for children, but who cares. They serve what my daughter wants. I had a very good "black and blue" burger, and a pint of Yorkshire beer. I would definitely go there again - in fact i might go back later this week.

The pub is in York city centre. We went in on Friday night mid February for some drinks and to watch a bit of live music. It was quiet when we got in but by the time the band started at 9pm the place was busy with people standing all around. Drink prices were reasonable for York city centre. Downstairs are remains of Roman baths and there are a few old artefacts in the bar area. Worth a visit.

We were recommended this place for live music on a Friday evening. It dint start until gone 9 but we got seats from 7.30 and sat and talked. The pub was fine but the landlord could have been friendlier and don't want to engage in any conversation even when it was quiet. He preferred to be silent and watch every one. He was a bit miserable to be honest. Cheer up matey. The band was loud and good but having seats was a bit wasted as people were standing all around us.

It seems hard these days to find a pub just being a pub, but although the Roman Bath has its remains down below it does interfere with the pub. It's a typical town pub with town locals, it's some where I regularly call if I just want a simple pint of lager and something pub grubby. Food service is always good and always piping hot.You can sometimes struggle to get a seat as it can get busy for food.

My husband and I visited York for 3 nights with our 12 year old son. We had much planned and one of those things was to see a band on the Sunday night at The Roman Baths. We had been here a few years ago and watched a band and had a relatively nice time. My husband is in a band so our son has been brought up around live music and the possibility of a few colourful words that may go with the experience. We walked in at 8.25pm, our son really excited. The pub wasn't massively busy and there were tables and chairs around the edge so we could be out of the way. We literally walked through the door and very rude and abrupt man clicked and shouted "oh you, out!" at our son. "No kids in here after 6". The whole pub turned round and stared. My husband explained that he is used to this sort of situation and has grown up around it all his life and we would make sure he stayed over on a table and it would be like he isn't there. The reply was "no food after 6, so no kids". Our son was mortified and really upset. I know there are rules on children staying times but firstly 6 o'clock is ridiculous. And secondly, there are ways and means in which you treat potential customers. I would advise anyone with children to avoid this place as they are obviously not as "family friendly" as they make out. We walked round the corner to another pub and they were brilliant. They said that as it was a Sunday and quite quiet so it wasn't a problem. We will never go back unless the staff have changed!

Dropped by because we needed a pick-me-up drink on a wet Sunday lunchtime. Had it, and left, feeling rather more dispirited than when we entered. Unsmiling barmaid (you have to spend over a tenner if you want to use your plastic) poor offer of wines and beers, bog-standard "pub food" menu, and a general feeling of being cheerless, and scuffed around the edges. What could be an interesting display of Roman artefacts found on the site is curling and flyblown in a neglected glass case. The wall paintings are good, but fading, and there is no explanation of what they are - if any of the customers were remotely concerned. I can think of a dozen other pubs nearby that are streets ahead of this grim little corner. Only for the very desperate/

Saw they had Coke in bottles behind the bar so I asked for a coke. I was given pepsi. I handed it back and said, sorry, I asked for a Coke and pointed behind the bar. She asked me what's the difference? Then when I tried to explain why I don't like pepsi (because it upsets my stomach and besides I asked for something by name) she interrupts me, asks if I'm chewing gum, hands me a napkin and orders me to spit it out. That peppermint gum and the Coke I ordered was to help settle my very nauseated stomach and keep me from being ill all over. It didn't help that the place smelled like armpits. :( Never going back.

We came in here on a Friday night and weren't particularly impressed. The Doorman were very strict - which was alright as we were a party of ten but certainly not rowdy, one of them was grumpy and quite rude tho - he made us wait while our entire party arrived before letting us in the door as "the last person is always the drunkest", in our case, as we had already explained, the last member of our party has a disability and walks with crutches! We stayed for one drink but didn't find the atmosphere very inviting, there seemed to be a lot of locals who did seem impressed that we were there. We had intended to stay and watch the band that had been advertised but in the end didn't bother hanging around to even see the band start. The only plus point was that the bar staff were friendly!

He also enjoyed hearing his own voice so much we had to cut it short after 30 minutes just to get out. If you are going to go to Bath while in the UK, don't bother with this. The pub itself was a great place - the staff were great, the decor was nice - a bit forced, my problem was the beer -it was rubbish; euro fizz and English brown liquid that is called beer, but isn't worth drinking - even the Guinness was tasteless - come on Yorkshire has some great beers - sell some of them

From the outside looks beautiful, in an ideal location in city centre near shops . Food was awful though. I had a burger and my OH ordered a tuna sandwich . The chips were average, can't be too fussy because it was relatively cheap, but burger tasted awful. It tasted like tinned meat. Toilets were filthy, and the staff didn't do anything about a group of very rowdy party goers behaving very in appropriately around diners. We were nine (yes 9) friends on a day trip to York. We all ordered fresh haddock and chips. Our meals were delicious. All served quickly and piping hot. Fish was great and we had real chips and wedges. Extremely good value for money. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. This won't be our last visit to this pub.

We were enjoying a day trip to York on bank holiday Monday. We popped in here for a meal as it had been recommended and it was absolutely fabulous. We had the lasagne and it has to be the best I have had - not the microwaved rubbish a lot of pubs have but it was freshly made to order and tasted gorgeous. I am writing this whilst waiting for my sticky toffee pudding but I imagine that'll be gorgeous too!

Three of us went for lunch we did not have a lot of time and the Roman Bath was very central. It was not my first visit the last time I came was many years ago. Nice enough pub plenty of room to sit down, it was not very busy despite York being very busy outside. Two of us had Quiche and chips and the other Chicken Pie and chips, the staff were very polite and service was quick which was good as we were hungry. I enjoyed the Quiche, the chips were OK and a small and uninspiring salad. (why doesn't anyone serve real chips anymore) My friends also enjoyed the quiche and Chicken Pie and the meal was good value at less than £20 for the 3 meals. The meal would have been really nice if it had come with real homemade chips and a more imaginative salad.

My wife and I stayed for a night to visit York and found this great B&B pub. Live music most nights and a good atmosphere. Paul, the manager was a star and couldn't do enough to help. The room was clean and comfortable and the noise from the bar was not intrusive. Cooked brekkie only on Sat & Sun but muffins, porridge and cereal bars in room as a continental breakfast was handy. They don't really have much parking and it is difficult to get to in a car but that is only because it is so conveniently located in the centre of York. We would definitely stay again and will make sure we book early to ensure a room.

I lived in york for many years and this pub was great for live music, on returning for a night out, was pleased to see it hadn't changed......great Band! it has still ...for me...retained it's charm...not taken over by some trendy "wine bar" dealership, rough round the edges, great company and great music. If you want some arty farty, trendy plastic pub...you will find plenty in York, All serving the same food, so was really nice to find one that hadn't changed and felt great to be back.As to the roman baths, they used to have a glass floor you could see on to the ruins, but why should all the tourists see it for nothing.....so now you have to pay...hey ho.lolFood basic, but ok, beer good choice, friendly bar staff...

Called in here for some lunch. The menu displayed outside looked basic, which is what we were looking for. We had homemade cheese and tomato quiche served with chips and salad for a very reasonable price of £4.95. Portion sizes were good and the food was tasty. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and the service was speedy. Hard to fault if you want a good value lunch in York City Centre.

The beer is fine and not over priced. The bands are often good, not always. You can usually get a seat. The staff are efficient too. It is generally for the 40+ spectator however! haven't had occasion to try food there. Make sure you include it in every York pub crawl.

Very average pub, uninspired range of real ales, basic and tired decor. Wouldn't bother with the food. The only benefits of this pub are that it hosts a lot of local live music and has an underground Roman bath that can be visited (charged)..In a city like York that has loads of delightful pubs that serve great food in pleasant surroundings there is no need to bother with any that don't make the grade.

Visited a few days ago and listened to the live R&B. Very pleasant drink of cask, not very busy - the band didn't quite outnumber the audience but it was close

We ordered two meals and I specified no gravy to be poured onto my meal but requested gravy separate. My meal arrived with separate gravy but gravy poured over the yorkshire puddings which was exactly what I was trying to avoid. The very thin slices of beef tasted so fatty and greasy I could not eat it.The gravy was lumpy.Even my friend who is not as fussy was disappointed.I was offered a refund but my friend had managed to eat some of mine so I declined the offer. The pub is tired looking and does not have a welcoming feel.We shall not be going back, ever.

Came to the DofY whilst waiting for our train. The staff were lovely and the restaurant was clean with space and a good range of food and drinks.

Thought I’d go here for a quick drink whilst I waited for the ghost walk to start outside. I was on my own and was immediately met with hostility, with the bar staff not very subtly pointing at me and talking amongst themselves. I asked if I could have a cola and was met with an incredibly patronising ‘you can love but can we see some ID first’. They suddenly stopped talking to me like a child when they realised I’m nearly 30. Then I sat down and put my phone on the table as I don’t like to keep it in my pocket and was told I wasn’t allowed to use my phone (I wasn’t actually using it) and a sign about it being a ‘digital detox’ pub held in front of my face. I realised I’d made a mistake at that point and it was almost impossible to exist in there as a solo customer. I felt very awkward and the atmosphere was terrible. Also out of the 3 women’s toilets, only one locks AND you have to deal with the toilet seat coming off when you sit down - grim All in all terrible experience - didn’t finish my drink and am writing this from a cosy, friendly pub round the corner

Decided to pop in as passing and saw the sign about children and dogs on the way in, having just visited Whitby the dog rule was welcome lol. Lovely looking pub, with booths, the staff served us quickly and were friendly. We saw the rest of the rules on the beer mats when we sat down, fine pubs are allowed to enforce whatever rules they want and it was nice not having to listen to other people's phone calls, or football matches. Would of liked a bit of background music but it didn't spoil our evening.

Great for a quick snack on the go when in the city or shopping. Staff were friendly with customers and shop appeared to be clean. Buns and pizza slice were all tasty. Great value
