Called here for Sunday lunch with friends while walking around Taunton .a wonderful experience pleasant staff and the 2 course meal was more than sufficient for us 4 along with drinks we thoroughly enjoined the experience

These events can be a bit hit and miss but pleased to say this was a very good experience throughout the 3 course lunch. No issue in recommending if you are in the Taunton area. Just outside of main town.

We stay at the hotel a couple of times a year, and always use the restaurant as it’s so convenient. To be honest, it’s not a place that you would go out of your way to visit for dinner, but on this occasion both our choices were really very good and I think that the kitchen has definitely upped its game over the last six months. Service was prompt and friendly, food and wine were both excellent and reasonably priced - all that was missing were more diners to give the attractive surroundings a bit more of a buzz! Do give this restaurant a try.

We did not stay here but ate in the restaurant. Drinks were good. Food was acceptable. It was convenient walking distance from our B&B on a wet and chilly night. I had soup and salad. My husband had vegetable lasagna. They seem to have nightly specials that include a drink.

Popped in for breakfast on the recommendation of a colleague. Lovely food and great friendly service. All at a very reasonable price. We live close by and look forward to a return visit.

I stay here twice a year, and although the restaurant isn’t one I’d go out of my way to visit, it’s nonetheless very satisfactory and convenient for residents. In my last review I mentioned the absence of any green vegetable with my steak and the management noted this - but sadly still hadn’t done anything about it when I ate here on this visit! All the same, I enjoyed my dinner and can recommend the restaurant if you’re staying close by.

We went here because it was close to our hotel. While the food - when it finally arrived - was okay, the service was extremely slow. We'd been elsewhere in Taunton the previous evening and found the service slow, but it was much slower here. the restaurant was very quiet, and in fact we were the only customers for the first half of our evening there. When I paid the bill, the waitress asked if everything had been alright. I replied "The service was very slow, to be honest." She said "Oh, sorry, we had a coach party in." I wonder where they were hiding. I had fish and chips and the chips seemed to me to be very dry, as though reheated in a microwave, There was a tiny bowl of peas which I suspect came from the freezer. Could do much better.

Mediocre food with a high price tag. Service was slow and the resturant was empty. A £27 bottle of Wine was plonked on the table unopened with out wine glasses, twice on seporate occasions. Also I had to re ask for the wine because it had been forgotten. Staff were friendly but somewhat vague and slack. There seemed to be only two. We were not notified of the tokens on the bar to enable us to get out of the car park And had to go back for it. We will not be rushing back to this place, it's a shame because the wine menu was great and the general decor cosy and inviting. However, I do not expect to hear the radio playing in a resturant on a Friday night. It was imposing.

We had a lovely meal for four people. The food was delicious and very filling. The pudding was freshly cooked and hot. We all had the pear, apple and raisin crumble with either custard or cream. The only negative was a long wait for both the main course, at this point the restaurant was busy and the pudding when there was only us and one other table. The waiting staff were attentive and helpful.

We ate here just a few days before Christmas,and it was a little quiet and lacking in atmosphere for a Friday night. I liked the decor though, and I imagine it could be quite a good venue when there’s more going on. My chargrilled rump steak was fine, but I could have done with a green vegetable as an accompaniment. There’s a good choice of wine by the glass too.

I had a big family lunch in their function room. They put on a wonderful buffet spread and were very accommodating. We talked through the menu prior to the day and I was able to make some changes that would better suit our party. The staff were incredibly friendly, efficient and unobtrusive. The price was reasonable and the food superb. Plenty of variety of salads, meat and potatoes. The drinks prices are a little steep but again the range and quality are high. I wouldn't hesitate to have another function here. Incredibly professional and we all had a lovely time. Many thanks.

The Retreat is attached to the Corner House Hotel where I enjoyed a two night stay. I think the majority of diners were from the hotel. The restaurant had a small but varied menu to suit all tastes. The food was prepared and presented to a good standard and represented value for money. The staff were attentive and friendly and all in all created a very pleasant dining experience

We were staying abt the Beaufort Lodge and wanted something for lunch. We had terrific sandwiches which were served with handmade chips. Excellent quality of ingredients and best mayonnaise we've had besides our own homemade. Good value for money and friendly staff.

What a lovely evening at The Retreat. Super ladies on duty with a polite demeanour. Tranquil when we arrived, relaxed with rustic decor...we were early but later other patrons arrived to enjoy the ambience...felt like we were in Spain enjoying the good wine and beer eating warm rolls with dear little wrapped butters! My husband and friend enjoyed chicken breast stuffed with mascarpone and herbs, my hullomi salad was fresh and delicious. Ice cream and Irish coffee devoured for pudding. Perfect thank you! We will be back for curry night plus Sunday roast.... give it to me! Mmmmmm

We have eaten at The Retreat many times. The food is consistently to a very high standard and the service from all the staff is excellent. Chicken Cesar Salad is a particular favourite of mine - I have eaten this in many restaurants all over the world but nothing beats the Retreat Chicken Cesar Salad. Great food and service and not expensive!

We have eaten here a few times and have never had a bad meal.It was our wedding anniversary and we were looking to take out a few of the family for a Sunday lunch.I just happened to be sent an offer from travelzoo for a two course sunday lunch normally at £19.50 but two for the price of one.I will say that at £19.50 it would have been a really nice lunch and decent value. On the offer it was ridiculously good.The service, general ambience and food were all first rate. The only very slight gripe is that although they were not busy it was probably slower than it should have been. We were all sat down about 13.10 and it was nearly 14.00 before we were served. Nearly 15.00 before we left. It was a roast lunch and dessert. That is the only small gripe. I was OK with it but a couple of the more elderly family members were starting to grumble (too be honest, as they tend to).Will happily return,

The food was excellent, as was the setting and the waiting staff (unlike the other hotel staff). The theme night foods were my favourite.

We decided to have Christmas day lunch here. The food was very good with hints of Christmasy spice here and there. The numerous courses, nicely presented also made for a very filling meal. Understandably with such a full house, service was a little lacking with some youngsters wondering around not knowing quite what to do.( like clear the table?). That said head waitress was a super young lady, very professional and in all everything was ok. The atmosphere was town centre pub not restaurant, which is great if you wish to wear old jeans and tee shirt and drink directly from a bottle, but a little disappointing for those who made the effort, as did most of the ladies. I would happily eat here again but definitely not for Christmas day or any other special occasion.

Visited here twice and both times we have been extremely happy with the experience. Sunday lunch a few weeks ago was spot on and Dinner in the bar last night was superb! The restaurant and bar are beautifully decorated which creates a relaxing atmosphere Loved the fire place, really cosy. The staff are friendly and chatty and only too happy to help.My partner and I chose from the evening menu which had a fantastic selection of dishes.We shared a tasty mackerel pate starter along with the garlic bread, both scrumptious! I had the lamb which was melt in the mouth and cooked superbly and he had the turkey Christmas dinner. The meal was delicious with plenty of quality meat and vegetables to go round. We were very happy when we were offered some more of the amazing gravy :)Thank you so much for a lovely culinary experience, we were made to feel very welcome even though the staff were obviously very busy with a big Xmas party on next door.Happy Christmas :)

We decided on this restaurant for our works Christmas party but we wish we hadn’t. The atmosphere was awful, no Christmas touch for our party, no effort put in and we were paying a big bill. The food was ok but nothing special. There was not enough bread for everyone with their starter and when asked for more we were charged extra even though they didn’t bring enough out in the first place. Again there wasn’t enough veg either. The service was extremely disappointing. At times the waitress tutted as we hadn’t finished when she came to collect plates. This didn’t feel like a Christmas party and service was shocking. When guests are spending the money we did I would expect a good service. This was far from it. Very disappointing for our Christmas meal.

Very welcoming and the staff couldn't do enough for you. Food was excellent as were the drinks. My husband who is very fussy over carbonara managed to clean the plate!

Visited Nov 2017 the night before a wedding for a meal between the two families. Table was booked for around 20 people so we were located in the separate Wine Room. Everyone had pre-ordered at the request of the restaurant so once people were seated the starters started coming out. Service was brilliant with nothing ever too much trouble. The food was delicious, served piping hot and quickly considering the group size. Great value for money and would visit again

I used the restaurant as a hotel guest. They do a number of special deals - Monday was Burger night and Tuesday Steak night which you get for a fixed price which includes a drink. Staff are attentive and pleasant and customers come from a variety of locals (some characters) and hotel guests. Would definitely recommend.

We ate in The Retreat twice during a short stay at the hotel and were very impressed. Chose the special of hake on the first night. Reasonably priced, well prepared, freshly cooked food. The wine menu is good. The second time I had duck. Again this was excellently prepared, delicious and accompanied by freshly prepared vegetables. Some great wine and lovely desert - deconstructed cheese cake. Staff were all great. Will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

Staying at hotel so we gave the restaurant a go . Reasonable menu and priced fair . Party of 6 all had different meals and no complaints . Steaks burgers lamb pies fish all very well cooked and presented nicely. Well worth a visit .

We have stayed in Taunton on a number of occasions but had never eaten at The Retreat before. It was so good that we ended up eating there three times and on each occasion, we were not disappointed. Quality of food was excellent and reasonably priced. Would thoroughly recommend the rib eye steak, which was beautifully cooked and portions just right so as not to overwhelm. Well balanced menu for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. An excellent and unexpected find.

I'm staying in the hotel linked to this restaurant. We've eaten here in two nights and really can't find anything to whine about on service and food quality. They hold specials on most evenings but that does not take away from any of the previous. It's located within walking distance of the twin centre. O yes drinks are also goodService with a smile

I am so disappointed with The Retreat, I have wanted to eat here for a while as it always looks a lovely place and the reviews on TripAdvisor were always good so when my husband and I finally found time to visit recently I was really looking forward to it, we went on a Sunday and as soon as we were shown to our seats I had my doubts as there was hardly any one there, we both ordered roasts and and when they arrived it had the look of pre cut chewy meat that you would get from Iceland, the potatoes were rubbery and the selection of veg was a piece of roast carrot and some parsnips (they were OK) about a teaspoon full of cabbage, diced swede ( looked frozen and no taste) and some really under cooked leek and the desert was frozen berry's, shop bought meringue and cream. If i was eating this at a chain pub or something similar I wouldn't be too shocked but I was expecting so much more and for the price we paid it should've of been,Honestly I could of had a nicer meal for half the price at a local pub. I will say the staff were friendly and the place was clean and looked great but obviously everyone else has eaten somewhere very different than I did.

The food was good quality, plenty of it, and a varied menu. Service was good. The restaurant and Bar had a nice ambience.

Hotel restaurants are often best avoided because of dreary atmosphere and unimaginative food. The opposite is true of the Retreat at the Corner House Hotel. Well worth a look.

This well named restaurant, on the day of our visit it was sadly quite, is a definite 'must visit' if you are looking for a really good meal in Taunton.Top quality food but with decent sized servings. Other restaurants in Taunton may have better reputations, but none in my experience serve better food!I can particularly recommend the Feta Strudel, yes, I know strudel is a sweet dish but this version is very much a savoury dish. Wonderful. Try it or you will regret it for the rest of your life.
