Just had a lovely two day business trip staying at this lovely venue. The room was beautiful with all mod cons and cosey attire. All staff were very kind, attentive and only too pleased to help. The Car park is a little tight to get to if your driving a larger car but I managed to get through ok. Other facilities I have stayed in Topsham do not have car parks so this was a bonus. I shall be back.

Against the flow. Sorry folks but my experience was not terribly good here. Dirty table that the girl half cleaned when it was pointed out. Had to ask for the fish card. Girl then got the order wrong despite it only being 2 items. 20 minutes later still waiting for a scone and some macaroni cheese. Lunchtime on a Thursday. My advice is avoid. Still haven't got my food yet so can't comment on the quality of that. Actually coming close to walking out it's THAT BAD!!! Food eventually arrived and to be fair. The crab macaroni and cheese was excellent, first class. They got my wife's scone wrong mind you,, fruit instead of plain.

A disappointing visit to the restaurant here. The seafood menu we were promised online and on the phone consisted of only mussels and a gurnard dish, so we took the mussels for a starter and paid the extra for the fillet steak main course. I'm not sure why the menu choice was so small. An explanation when I asked was not forthcoming. The cider/cream 'West Country' sauce with the mussels was too light and lacked depth of taste. I thought a dozen mussels too few for the price paid. We were very disappointed not to be able to have the fish dinner we were looking forward to. The fillet steak, however, was very good. Well cooked and well presented with nice accompaniments. The extra price green beans we thought necessary and should have been included were likewise well cooked. The wine list is large but very expensive for the vintages offered. The dining room is strangely adorned with some inappropriate pictures and uninspiring decor. Best of all was the service from the young waiters and waitresses, very much worth the 12.5% service charge. We've booked The Galley for our next visit to Topsham, hoping for a good fish experience. We won't be returning to The Salutation Inn unless we know the menu in advance.

We are in the glass house. It was busy and there was a good atmosphere. Staff were friendly and welcoming. We opted for the a la carte menu. Service was a bit slow - we waited half an hour for our order to be taken and the amuse bouche of cumin and carrot bonbons arrived before we had ordered! We both had scallops to start which were well cooked and a good portion. I ordered the beef for the main course which was extremely tender. My husband ordered the guinea fowl but when the main arrived it was beef too. We didn't send it back as we didn't want to wait for a new order to be prepared so he ate the beef which he enjoyed but we did mention at the end we had the wrong main. We shared cheese and the 5 cheese selection was of all interesting local cheeses. Reasonable value for money and they remembered it was my birthday and served some macaroons and fudge on a plate piped with happy birthday which was a nice touch.

Our first visit and already planning our next. We had dinner seated in the glass house and from entering to leaving the front of house team were fantastic. Attentive, friendly and welcoming, the team are fist class. Now the FOOD!! The menu isn’t extensive but it doesn’t need to be with the quality and sublime taste of each dish. This is some of the best food we have tasted and we are lucky to have eaten at many renowned restaurants. The amuse bouche was a perfectly balanced treat. Freshly baked bread served with butter, oil and olives was followed by 10g of caviar. Our starters were the scallops and the celeriac, mains were the beef and sea bass dishes and we both had the dark fruit meringue desserts. Each dish was beautifully presented and a triumph of taste. The salutation inn is a jewel in the southwest not to be missed!

Came here for the taster menu as had come some years before and had only had the 3 courses. If I'm truly honest we were disappointed as we didn't feel the taster menu was that at all but merely and extension of what appeared to be on the 3 course menu. A couple of the dishes were imaginative but the rest was well cooked but very mediocre. It's a shame as we were really looking forward to it. With wine and drinks it transpired to be an expensive evening for what can only be described as a mediocre menu. Staff although friendly, were not prepared as we were offered menu's, something NOT required as we had booked the taster menu. I expect more from a restaurant of this alleged calibre. Training and a sense of audience appears to be lacking. A great pity.

We stayed here for a week, so were able to sample most of the menu. The food was interesting and generally well-conceived. The standard was very good, with flashes of brilliance, but also some not so great. A turbot and lobster dish was excellent, but only the second time. The first time, a few days earlier, the turbot had been overcooked, and I also asked that the coriander foam be replaced by a simple sauce. The result, with a beurre noisette sauce, was delicious. A chicken confit terrine was very good – with more chicken flavour on the second tasting, so consistency in the kitchen is somewhat of an issue. A pork tenderloin main was so dry and overcooked that we had to send it back – something I do extremely rarely. On re-cooking, it was fine. A salmon tartare starter was tasty and well-designed, as were a scallops and belly pork starter, an octopus and cuttlefish risotto main and a chocolate tart and cassis sorbet dessert. However, a sirloin dish lacked the flavour I would have expected. The dessert list was short and, with the exception of the chocolate tart dish, pretty conventional. If only the innovative ideas that permeated the starters and mains could feed through to the puds! The wine list was as interesting as the savoury dishes. Although fairly short, it included gruner veltliner and both red and white appassimentos. But for best value, step up to the more expensive “familiars” – Sancerre and Pouilly-Fuissé were both great. Despite the “room for improvements” noted above, we thoroughly enjoyed eating and drinking here. The service was first class – I can find nothing to criticise (that’s also extremely rare for me!).

We took friends here to celebrate both our 50th wedding anniversaries. We chose the Salutation Inn because it had an interesting menu and very good reviews. My wife and I both had the trout gravlax which was tasty but minute measuring about 5cms x 3 cms. We both then had the "Exminster lamb rump, braised shoulder, rosemary gnocchi, ratatouille, burnt aubergine puree, lamb jus". The shoulder was excellent and just fell apart as it was so tender. The lamb rump however was fatty and gristly. I think I had one good slice and none of my wife's pieces were good. This really should not happen in a good restaurant and it let the whole experience down. The place itself is lovely and the service was prompt and attentive -

Well, I guess we were unlucky judging from most of the other TripAdvisor reviews. We had the 6 course tasting menu for £75, one of the "courses" being coffee for heavens' sake. With the exception of the monkfish ceviche, which was quite nice, the other courses were rather tasteless and unmemorable. The Powderham beef fillet was rather chewy too. If you're serving portions this small the flavour needs to be spot on. Surely the crab starter needed white crab meat rather than brown.

Our visit was for me highly anticipated from reading previous reviews, I was not disappointed with the experience. We arrived in plenty of time so as to be able to enjoy a cocktail or two before dining, in a word delicious. The lounge was both comfortable and quiet, a nice relaxed place to wist for our table to be prepared and to partake of those cocktails. The staff were most helpful without being intrusive. We were escorted to the dining room where our table was laid with fresh cloth and the required array of glasses and cutlery to facilitate our foray into fine dining. We had opted for the six courses with wines to match. Each course was brought to us by the knowledgeable waiters who gave us a brief description of the cooking style and ingredients. The presentation of the food was a wonderful visual creation of carefully selected and perfectly cooked ingredients. I really enjoyed the information imparted to us by the sommelier who listened to our taste preferences and advised accordingly, and most enjoyable they were too. We ate here with my son and his girlfriend following his graduation. We wanted a special but relaxed meal and that’s just what we got. There was a choice of tasting menus on offer or I believe you could have a simpler a la Carter menu. We all chose the four course tasting menu which had around three choices for each course. The cost of this was very reasonable given the quantity and standard of the food. Meat eaters, fish lovers and vegetarians could all have eaten very happily from this menu. We had a variety of different dishes, and my husband’s gluten free requirements were thoughtfully provided for, including with home made gluten free bread and a special GF dessert. The restaurant itself is spacious and although it was full when we were there we did not feel that anyone could overhear our conversation. Service was very good, attentive but unobtrusive. Ate here recently mid week when not too busy. The staff reception was good and the food explanations fine. Ordering went well and the food supplied was of exceptional quality. Our wine choice was, perhaps, poor as the selected white was not to our liking but that was just a poor choice. There was, however, just something missing in the service that appeared a little disco-ordinated. I wonder if a supervisor was lacking as each individual member of staff was polite, efficient and as one might expect for a restaurant of this quality and price to match. Overall there were gaps in service, our initial waitress disappeared and we had to request the petit fours with coffee.

Went down for dinner with the same format as before - drinks, with a wide range available, in the lounge with delicious canapés. Decided to have the 'no choice' six course taster rather that the 4 course with choices, as the dishes on offer with the 6 course suited us well. Decided to share a flight of wine between two of us - as we have discovered elsewhere, lady manager a bit hesitant but we persisted and she kindly gave us our rations in a glass each, and we found the quantities very acceptable. and then a superb meal followed - seafood and fish, beef for our main and a really good range of mainly local cheeses followed by an excellent desert. First timer for my wife and I, with 2 couples that recommended the place. They were so right to. Lovely restaurant surroundings, very friendly staff and best of all a 4-course game based menu that was a treat to eat. Oh and the aperitifs in a warm and comfortable lounge to start and an excellent wine list to accompany the meal. All at reasonable prices, certainly cheaper than we were used to in the Home Counties.

Really very good taster menu for special occasion with wide range of requested tweaks and dietary requirements accommodated. Staff superb throughout. Only issue that several courses were way larger than suits taster menu, but you can’t really complain about too much of a good thing.

The Salutation Inn is probably one of the best restaurants we've been to in the SW and in my opinion is not far off from getting a Michelin star or even two. The menu ranges from 4 to 8 courses (not including the chef's appetisers which we could have nibbled on all night) with each course outdoing the next - it is that good. Well done chefs! The staff deserve a special mention for their seemingly effortless attention given to every aspect of the dinning experience. I won't say much more other than book a table early and standby for a great dinning experience.

We chose the 6 course tasting menu which was absolutely delicious. However, my reason for writing a review is due to the stand out service and thoughtfulness of both the front of house and kitchen. We chose the menu perfectly aware of the fact that one of the courses would not be to our taste. Not a big deal, I believe that tasting menus should put you a little out of your comfort zone. Anyway, after trying the dish, we both decided it wasn't for us. The waitress kindly enquired whether everything was ok and we made sure she knew that there was nothing wrong with the food, it just wasn't for us. After taking the dishes back to the kitchen the chef sent a message out to see if we would instead like to try the pigeon or the mackerel (dishes which were on there other menus that night). We accepted and they were quite delicious! To top it off the sommelier brought a wine for us to taste with it.

We really enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. Well presented creative canapes were served before our meal in the lounge. We opted for the 4 course menu, 6 & 8 course taster menus were also available. The quality and presentation of our meals was just exceptional. The restaurant would be a great venue for a large family dinner party. We hope to return

We visited on Monday 20th August for our anniversary and ordered the 6 course tasting menu. Every course was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was excellent and the atmosphere in the restaurant was lovely. We were made to feel very special throughout the evening and Amelia in particular was a lovely host. We would highly recommend this restaurant and would love to visit again next time we're in the area.

My 60th birthday treat. Stayed at the hotel and ate here the first night. The appetiser of mussels was fantastic. Unfortunately my wife is not a lover of seafood. They let me have hers as well and they gave her a goats cheese salad. Scallops lovely and the beef mains brilliant.

We had a family celebration for a 75th birthday and had an excellent meal. We booked it 2 months ago and the organisation by Salutation's Amelia was fantastic. She is very responsive, easy to contact and we had absolute faith that everything would run well. The menu choice was very good, and from the moment we arrived to be greeted by Ben the service was friendly, efficient, and perfect. We had delicious canapes, followed by a 3 course meal in their private restaurant, and coffee with petite fours. My mussels starter was delicious, followed by superb beef, and finally a delightful berry cake. I highly recommend the Salutation Inn, for service, ambience, food and hospitality. My only very slight reservation is that their local beer and cider selection is limited (although I did enjoy a good Exeter ale)

From the booking to paying the bill The Restaurant at the Salutation Inn experience was terrific. In my family's opinion the meals were sublime having consumed sea bream, chicken breast, aranccini, and some divine desserts between us. The staff were on top form explaining the menu and drinks and looked after the birthday girls - thank you so much. There was a lovely, cheerful ambience to the Glass House and I'm so grateful that my daughters had a wonderful time. Looking forward to another visit.

This is fine dining done very well. The space itself feels rather featureless but the food was excellent and the sommelier was a real delight - his wine pairings were superb, particularly a plum-infused sake which he gave us with our coconut rice pudding.

We held a family celebration here having travelled over from FRANCE. The welcome was perfect as was the planning for the menus for all the family. The in-house chef « Tom » has trained under a top chef in Megeve, and clearly he has brought back some wonderfully authentic techniques and ideas for his cuisine. We give the food and service 10/10. Good value compared to its very high quality.

After having a fantastic and delicious meal here approximately 2 years ago, I was looking forward to going back. However, this visit did not quite live up to those high expectations. Although the meal was tasty, it was less so than perviously, and also seemed to be a less exciting or inventive menu.

As ever: delicious, well-presented food and friendly but discreet service in pleasant surroundings. The wine match the sommelier produced for the gazpacho soup was exquisite. We appreciated being asked if we'd like a break between courses three and four. Remains very firmly our favourite restaurant in the area.

I was invited to a birthday party this weekend and found myself at a bar I’d never been to before—and won’t be visiting again. While the private party room was pleasant and we managed to create a good atmosphere, the bar itself left much to be desired. To start, the drink quality and pricing were absolutely outrageous. I ordered a Gin and Tonic, which is my usual choice. They used a bottle labelled Gordon’s, but I am certain it wasn’t genuine Gordon’s gin. The tonic was an unnamed, inferior brand. They served this in a small 200ml plastic glass and charged me an extortionate £7.90. Knowing that my body reacts poorly to cheap alcohol, I decided to switch to a bottle of Prosecco, which cost me £30. Although the Prosecco was mediocre at best, it was a slight improvement over the gin. I can’t help but wonder why so many young people in Exeter end up unwell after nights out, given the poor quality drinks sold at exorbitant prices in some bars. For me, this bar is definitely one to avoid in the future. I haven't tried any food, and I wont even going to try.
