Lovely cosy hotel, we stayed here for a one night stop off, upon arrival Matt (I believe that was his name, maybe Matthew) was extremely welcoming, helpful and polite. He shown us to the room which was cosy, clean and comfy! We had both dinner and breakfast here, both of which were to high standard! Freshly made, tasty and really well priced! Breakfast was included in the booking and we decided on a few drinks and a meal there and glad we did. Perfect start to our holiday!

Stayed in camper-van. Friendly welcome. Reasonable sized car park, which is level where the spaces are allocated. The stay is free if you have a meal in the pub. Good menu at reasonable prices. The meal was well presented and tasty. Breakfast is served from 7am to 11am. Free WiFi. It’s about a 15 minute walk into Barnard Castle. There is also a Lidl, Co Op and Home Bargains within a 10 minute walk.

Wonderful Choice of home made Meals. My husband had steak and ale pie with chips and peas and lots of gravy. I had the hunters chicken with rustic chips (jacket potatoes deep fried wedges) and home made salad and coleslaw. Both meals were lovely and the service from the two girls was very good. We are staying at the caravan club site and will be putting a review in their book to encourage other people to come. Prices are more reasonable than places in the town. We used to visit the pub regularly under the previous management. The service was always very friendly and efficient and the food and drink good quality and good value. We called in last week for lunch and were so disappointed. The food was so dry and overdone as to be barely edible. The service was desperately slow and inefficient - eg. the wrong drinks were brought twice. When we politely pointed out the issue with the food we did not even get a 'I'm sorry to hear", the waitress simply ignored the comment and the manager merely smiled at us as we left. We can only hope that the management changes again soon, in the meantime if you don't know Barnard Castle there are much better pubs in the area and it is worth seeking them out.

Be warned: enforcement of staff following basic Covid rules is extremely lax, so I need to know if the wearing of face covering by staff is mandatory during this pandemic or not? If it is wear them correctly, not around your chin or under your nose. They also allow customers to crowd the bar without masks, customers do not wear face coverings when entering & exiting this inn either.Prepare for another lockdown!I feel very unsafe when visiting this establishment & do not intend on returning any time soon!

Went based on other reviews on google. We were a little disappointed unfortunately! Felt that certain members of staff gave the vibe that really didn’t want to be there and were merely making it through their shift. Using singular words to communicate and fairly blunt. Menu quite limited- fairly standard pub grub which isn’t always bad, however… fish and chips although presented well the fish was in a very soggy batter and kinda slimey. Which was odd when the onion rings were great and crispy! The pie my partner had was about an cm thick and looked like it has just been purchased from the corner shop as came presented in a little foil tray. Puddings were as expected. Hot chocolate fudge cake clearly purchased in and then microwaved as the icing in the middle of the cake had completely melted and was then just two slabs of cake in a puddle. My partners words being ‘they’re always the same I don’t know why I fall for it every time!’ My sticky toffee pudding however was quite tasty and a good size! Overall I wouldn’t bother going back and we were intending on having breakfast here also but didn’t bother after our dinner here.Another plus was that campervans can stay in the car park if they have a drink or meal!

We visited on Sunday afternoon we sat outside the front, it seemed as the tables out the front we were forgotten about hence why the service was extremely slow! It was 25 until our drinks order was taken even tho we went inside to ask twice, then a further 30 mins for our drinks order to arrive to the table,The didn’t seem busy the tables round the side were reserved but only 3 of them were in useWe ordered food which the waitress came back 3 times to double check the order which was frustrating, food took over 45 mins to arrive, once we asked where our order was it came out within 10 mins which I thought was very strange,Food was nice I had steak pie and chips the chips are the best I’ve had for a while and the we had garlic bread to share and that was delicious So overall food was 8/10 but the service was a 5/10 at its bestMaybe they need to invest in a app to help the staff out

Waited outside for 20minutes (at the Wait Here to be Seated sign) - no acknowledgement despite staff serving tables and being able to see us until a staff member past us to start her shift! Made to feel very uncomfortable waiting as the customers seated by the car park couldn’t stop staring at us - felt like they were locals and we were the ‘newbies’ and yes we were as it was out first visit and we weren’t local (though we have had a static nearby for over 15 years so Barney is our second home!)Told only one table left for walk ins as all the others at the front, in the sunshine, were all booked. Fair enough as we were just passing. We sat out the front - the only table in the shade on a glorious day. My partner even joked that we should sit on the wall! 15 mins after being seated no one came to take our order. Partner had to stand in the doorway and askstaff if we could order drinks (he had to do this again when we asked for the bill!) Slow service and we weren’t made to feel welcome or valued. Needless to say we didn’t stay for a second drink or food! When we left there were still plenty of tables available next to the car park, in the sun! We’ll be sticking to the pubs in the centre of town in future.

Dreadful, inattentive and poorly managed experience. Came here in March this year, and still awaiting a voucher promised to me for the awful experience we had, I’ve spoken to the manager on the phone and many times via Facebook messenger but now all messages are being ignored. I’ve held off writing this review since March as I was hopeful we would still receive our voucher and I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt during the covid situation, however they are still trading so I’m not sure why we have been ignored consistently. Without prior booking we thought we would chance it and luckily we were told there would be a 10 minute wait, we arrived at 18.15pm, sat at the bar with our drinks and were finally shown to a free table at 18.45pm, we had had 30 minutes already to study the menu so we felt annoyed after a further 15 minutes our order still wasn't taken. The waitress came over at 7pm just as my husband had gone to the bar to place our food order, i made the waitress aware but this comment was just ignored, maybe she just didn't hear me. Anyway, starters arrived 15 minutes later, they were beautiful and we really enjoyed them, but mains took another 35 minutes to arrive, once again no apology or acknowledgement of this. Yes the pub was busy, but tables who came in after us were served before us. I had pre ordered my dessert and we had finished our mains by 8pm, however, she the waitress busied herself on the phone and continued waiting and clearing other tables besides ours. The lovely chap behind the bar asked us if he could get us anything and I just said we were waiting on my dessert. In the 30 minutes that passed, another waiter was cleaning 2 tables next us, he could see we were waiting for our table to be cleared but chose to ignore this. 8.30pm and we were really fed up and decided to leave. We asked the bar lad to settle our bill and complained to him, he was shocked that we still did not have our desserts and went to find out why. He approached the waitress and asked her what had happened, and she responded in ear shot 'i'm not going to bring out dessert when they still have dirty dishes there', i was fuming hearing this, as if she had been aware of us sitting for so long why had she just ignored us? She passed behind me to then clear our table, and I caught her and explained that she had left us waiting for 30 minutes with empty plates and no dessert, she apologized quickly and tried to scuttle off, i told her how angry i felt as we were gifted these vouchers as a special birthday gift to me and it had been ruined by total lack of service. She said sorry again and shrugged and hurried away. The bar man couldn't have been kinder, he was genuinely sorry and gave her 20% off our bill. I feel like the waitress/supervisor or whoever she was handled this situation poorly, leaving the poor lad behind the bar to deal with this. The food quality is 5*, chef and bar staff are excellent, it's the waitress who needs some lessons in customer service. We didn't leave until 8.45pm, so 2.5hrs for 2 courses and missed out on our dessert. On receiving a telephone call after chasing them, it turns out the waitress in question is actually the manager! She assured me I would receive a voucher via email which did not happen, after further messaging she said it would be sent through the post, again didn’t happen and all future messages have been ignored.

Had the pleasure of eating here whilst at our caravan. We have been residents of the camp site for over ten years and have seen this pub go up and down. But the food, decoration & staff have never been this good. On the other hand i do feel for them as they have opened and closed in such a short period due to this made up pandemic. Yet they still remain, credit to the owners for not giving up. A bit more on the covid thingy hand sanitisers placed everywhere, signage spot on and staff wearing masks. Food amazing value for the price you pay and the variation is good. You can tell its all homemade and nice to see realale available again. Please dont give up you have done a fabulous job & barnard castle needs this level of food. We will be back in the easter look forward to seeing you all again & a massive thankyou for giving us our pub back. Best wishes Mr & Mrs Bainbridge

Went for a family meal and took advantage of the early bird which was good value for money. All of the food was nice apart from their red well burger was over cooked and “melted cheese” was more like burn on hard cheese. The real let down was the lack of service, we were there a total of 2 hours and only ever seen 1 member of staff all night. He was in doing everything, making the drinks, taking orders, bringing meals out, clearing tables etc with about 6-7 different tables needing service. It wasn’t obviously his fault, more to the way the place is managed but due to him being on his own people including us were waiting an exceptionally long time between courses.

They were good enough to box it up to take away, My dog had no complaints about it, The Ale was good & sweets were ok as well, will not be going back as there are many places in the area that can cook meat better. Can I suggest a cheaper cut of meat e.g. Feather Blade cooked for 6 or 7 hours that tastes fantastic & falls apart. The place is very clean but a bit chilly.

First time back here for nearly 5 years & I must say hats off to the new owners it was great. Food selection amazing, drinks actually available not like last time, & the best bit the staff were friendly & professional. Nice varied menu and you can see it’s fresh, can quickly and hot. We were sat in the bar area and the layout is perfectly social distanced and sanitisers everywhere helped. All in all a lovely evening with friends. We will return, get the beef wellington, stunning.

Had lunch here today and thought it was lovely. Great portion sizes and value for money, the coffee was nice as well. A very chilled out pub with a lovely home feel, first visit but definitely wont be the last.

Safety measures re COVID were good, we felt very safe. Service was a little slow but as long as you get a drink and the food is worth it, it really doesn’t matter. The food was worth it, all five of us really enjoyed our three courses. We went for the early bird and it was very good value.

We pre-booked a meal here got our first night on holiday in Barnard Castle having viewed the menu on line, and so glad we did.Firstly, social distancing is well done.Secondly, friendly attentive staff who serve you at your table,Thirdly a full menu not the truncated covid one.The best bit was the food, very good choice, perfectly cooked and fantastic value for money. The heritage lamb is superb, and only £17 the same quality of food in a city center restaurant would set you back at least double.Highly recommended.

Visited with friends last night (Saturday 5th) after hearing rave reviews from colleagues and did not disappoint! Table booked at 8pm, arrived abit early and staff were lovely and had the table ready so we sat down and had a drink before ordering, food was served promptly and was exceptional! Everyone needs to try the sticky toffee pudding! Out of this world! Overall a brilliant night - will be back!

We have not been the this pub since its previous owner, we would never had ordered food from here before the change. The new owner has put a lot of effort into creating a nice atmosphere. The decor is traditional and welcoming, the dining area & plates/cutlery were clean and well presented. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. The early bird menu offered great value. The portions were not smaller or limited to bog standard items. Our party had the ribs, soup, seafood pancake and garlic mushrooms all of which were delicious and perfectly portioned. There was an appropriate waiting time between the starters and mains. We ordered two steaks both of which were cooked as requested, fish & chips and the chicken diane dish. Again, all were excellent and were generous portions. Staff were very helpful and allowed us to use our own birthday cake for dessert, storing it in the kitchen then bringing it out with the candles lit. The staff were wearing some PPE and there was a one way system in place but the rules were not overwhelming nor did they detract from the experience like some places. In terms of the early bird menu I could not recommend this pub highly enough. I worry the a la carte menu may be too expensive for some tastes (including mine!). The food on there looks lovely but with some dishes costing up to £35 I personally will always be dining via the early bird menu which runs until 7.30pm. We will definitely be returning here.

Tried to book a table by email, received no reply, called several times as one of our party is vegan, staff were unhelpful, stating that anything on the menu cohkd be made vegan!!REALLY! ANY THING! Had to cancel the bookings as male staff was extremely rude.Do not think he knew what vegans dnot eat!Same as we know the chef himself is great.

Went on bank holiday Monday (31 August) we arrived an hour early (our fault) staff were friendly and offered us a place to sit so we could have drinks, staff came over bang on 8 to show us to our table, we did have a little wait to put our order in but we didn’t mind since the food was out of this world! After a few bad reviews we didn’t know what to expect but honestly all in all no complaint what’s so ever! Really enjoyed an amazing night

We are staying in the caravan park next to the pub and have never used it as never looked inviting. Went for lunch today as had heard a company had taken it on. Greeted by a friendly gentleman who showed us to our table, food came hot and was plentiful only issue I had was no room for a dessert. Prices good and good selection of drinks on offer, the best bit for me as a meat lover was that beef, can still taste it now. 10/10

We ate here today for sunday lunch after a nice walk around Barnard Castle. We booked a table for 2pm, we arrived on time, habd santizers at the entrance and various places around the pub/resturant area, which was very nice to see. We were seated with Menus and a drinks order was taken at the table. Although th place was very busy, nothibg was too much trouble for staff. We had the full 3 course set lunch at a resonable price of £20 each woth drinks ontop.Everything arrived within sufficiant timings and was delicous. Will deffinatly return. Thankyou.

We are visiting from Kent and this was Quite possibly the worst roast dinner I have ever had, (or not had as it was sent back) small portion of roast lamb blood vessels and gristle, raw leather beef, roasted vegetables swimming in oil and in general a pretty vile dinner. In their defence they didn’t charge us for the 2 meals we sent back but if anyone is thinking of going there for a nice family roast I would advise you give it a swerve and go to Greggs for a pasty.

A huge pat on the back is deserved for all the staff as they were great. Had heard the bridge had taken over and had to give it ago, it was fabulous. The food was perfect even though it was busy, and the staff could not do enough for you. No more travelling out of tow we now have a gem on our door step. Give it a go you wont be disappointed.

So last Sunday I visited the redwell Inn in search of a real Sunday dinner! Barnard castle seems full of boozers and cafes but not many places doing good food! The redwell did not disappoint my roast sirloin beef dinner arrived quickly and piping hot it was served with all the old school trimmings and plenty of meat cooked to perfection. Been from Yorkshire I can say these lot also know how to make a banging Yorkshire! Really enjoyed my whole experience the seating and bar area is cosy warm and relaxing! Just what you want after been drenched doing the castle tour! The staff were also very friendly and keen to help! It's a 5min walk from the town centre but definitely worth it I'll be back again! Well played redwell! (Also look out for the paul Potts lookalike on the bar!)

So after visiting the bridge for the first time had to try here as live closer. Tried to book a table on Monday and couldn't get a table until tonight. Lovely cosy setting and very clean, was very impressed with the covid safety put in place. But the food was on another level, I had the seabass and the sticky toffee pudding and both were very good.Next visit definitely having the chateau as looked amazing on the next table. Well done to you all

Staying in Barnard Castle for a week and thought we would eat here. Sent a email to the contact email during the week before our visit but no reply. called in and was booked in for 8 o'clock on Wednesday night. When we arrived queue was out of the door and looking through windows, all tables were full. We left.I know it is popular because of the government scheme but need to sort out booking. Fortunately managed to get in at the Three Horseshoe. It's a pity as menu looks very good.

Went for a family meal last night. Had starters, mains and puddings. Food was just all lovely! Can see staff are trying their hardest when places are so busy from “eat out to help out”. Lovely evening and staff were very helpful! Had a parmo main and it was lovely, just the right size and the chips were so nice crispy on the outside and fluffy inside! Will definitely go again!

Table booked for 1930 - seated after a short wait. Managed to get our first drink at 2000 hrs - starters at 2030 - far too long, main course at 2100 again far too long of a wait. Had to prompt waitress for drinks and she didn’t know if there was a wine menu or what wines they sold. Starters were lovely (Camembert) mains were ok, but - burger (forgot the fires and onion rings, which arrived as my daughter had finished her burger), steak pie which was good and steak club sandwich which was good. My Wife’s meal (Chicken Parmo) got sent back as it was burnt and hard. Managers response was poor and didn’t seem to bothered. I would not recommend this place even though it has a good reputation. A lot better Gastro pubs more reasonably priced to choose in the local area. First and last visit.

First outing after lockdown & so glad to be back out. Had eaten here a few times previous and was quickly becoming our favourite. Was very impressed on how they have put safety measures in place, plenty of sanitisers around & signs clearly stating where to go. The food was lovely and the staff were great with the kids, they actually sat still. Actually can not move with the amount of food we have eaten. Will be back soon.

Stopped here after a trip to Newcastle on the way back to the midlands. The pub is easy to find, checked in really easy with the lady behind the bar who was really helpful and welcoming. She gave us a menu to take to our room so we could see if we were going to eat there. The room was nice, cozy and clean. Our room was facing the front and the traffic noise was not a problem. The bed was comfortable and we could not hear anything from the pub below. We decided to eat here and whilst not everything was available what we did have was really nice very filling and cooked really well. The staff were really friendly and stopped to have a chat with us whilst we were in the pub. The drinks were poured perfectly and I would say they know how to pour a good Guinness. The girl they had in singing was really good and added to the atmosphere.Would recommend this pub as a place to stay and eat in and we will be back.

We attended for the Halloween spooktacula event, a wonderful atmosphere, brilliant staff. I was served by Shellby and Michaela most of the time we were there, both members of staff were extremely good with my daughter who even won the pumpkin competition while we were there for the event. Mel was brilliant as well, even though she runs the pub she always made time to speak with us and other guests. Our food was great, managing to even be on time despite how busy the place was we were never left waiting long. My daughter is now absolutely obsessed with mac and cheese!
