Professional and courteous staff, lovely building and location, cracking canal-side beer garden, and the best but of course I have had in an age. The only thing missing was a wafer thin mint so I could go full Mr Creosote.

Nice pub in a nice setting right by the canal. I had the gammon steak which was a decent size and was well cooked (was served up quick too). The chips could have done with being a bit hotter as they were only luke warm but they tasted good anyway. Would go again ! Update: Best place in Tamworth for a Full English breakfast. Food was great but after main meals were served service stopped, We was a table of 11 and after about an hour of waiting we clear our own table and had to ask for pen and paper so I could get everyone’s desert orders, no offer of we will come and take your orders, I even had to go into the main bar to place the orders, he then wanted a table number?? I tried to explain we was the big table of 11 in the corner at the end of the bar but he insisted on a number, I was not happy, I had just done his job and collected the orders surly he should know what table number it was, there is not many corners with a large table of 11 in, Anyway desert was fine, I personally won’t be booking and going there again I think a £300 bill, it was not a relaxing family meal out for me, too much like hard work

MORE AT Google

Really dissapointed today, so been to the red lion at hopwas, this is my home village where I grew up & have been going back to to see mom over 15 years so I know the pub well, Now I know the price of food has hiked globally I travel for work and see the same story everywhere, but generally either pubs keep prices down & reduce the quality of food or increase the price to maintain the quality / portion sizes. It seems to me that the red lion have hiked prices almost 30-40% whilst reducing the portion sizes 50%. My hungry brother (was his birthday) (reason for the meal) had the mixed grill seemed to be freezer bag meat, very small pieces of poor quality tough meat, and for £20 I found that terrible, I had the hunters chicken which came on what I can only describe as a very small plate, I counted the chips there were 12, smallish piece of chicken generally the portion size for just under £14 I was horrfied & actually still hungry, My wife had chicken and leek pie, we used to have this across the road at the tame otter years ago and was a lovely big puff pastry top pie with a pile of chips or veg of your choosing, this pie today was a pretty poor show, quite small and accompanied by again 12ish chips & a few peas, I'll be honest when my hunters chicken came out I thought I'd been hard done by but when I saw my wife's pie I felt lucky. My mom went for the shepards pie, to be honest on a first glance this looked the best one on the table although not much with it it seemed a reasonable size & fairly well presented although once all the food had arrived we started to discuss how the food seemed to have shrunk a lot and got expensive, and my mom said her shepards pie was still OK but she had noticed the last few times she had it it seemed to have more and more veg in and less and less meat, I think it's a bit shame to be honest this was our preferred local for many years, over the tame otter opposite which was always the expensive pub in the village , now not so much the case and to be honest there food is better now. Big shame as the pub looks nice inside, it's been done out in the last few years and looks smart, the staff are friendly the young lad freddy who served us was so friendly and helpful too! Really hope this situation improves in the future, there's much better food in the area for less money & to be honest in my opinion either you hike the price and maintain the same good quality or you leave the price and reduce the quality, seems a poor business decision to reduce quality & hike the price too, people will soon catch on that's what's happened especially your bread and butter locals. 👍👍 hope things improve

Overall this was an enjoyable visit. Positives: - Food - mains were great. The cheesecake dessert was dry however (we had irritable kids with us, so just left rather than say anything) - Canal side setting - Beer selection - female waitress was nice. Negatives: - The male waiter with sleeve tattoo was incredibly rude, and made us feel like we were inconveniencing him by being there. His attitude stunk, he needs to cheer up, or get another job which isn’t public facing. - play area could do with a bit of love (but I appreciate it’s rare to even get one, so won’t moan too much!)

We had a brace of quite splendid nut roasts followed by a couple of tasty desserts. Staff were very welcoming and happy to chat. Cosy lounge area with doors leading to well kept, tiered outdoor area. Toilets would be difficult to navigate for wheelchair users, it's a very narrow thoroughfare from the lounge that takes you the otherside of the serving area, so the barstaff know where you're off to! Toilets are clean and looked after. Pub can get busy, so for evenings and expected busy times (when sports events are on, weekends, bank holidays, etc) maybe worth booking ahead. Staff have always been friendly and approachable (you know how sometimes if you try and grab a member of staffs' attention if they're on floor service and they look at you with daggers for disturbing them?? Well not here!). I've noticed the staff engaging with customers in the bar area, you get a real sense that the staff know their locals, but it doesn't have an intimidating vibe as some local pubs do. Good menu, vegetarian options, never had a bad meal or service here, (sharing platter starter is very filling!). It's also worth mentioning that my first visit here was for a life celebration after a funeral and the catering was amazing.

MORE AT Google

A pleasant independent operation located canalside with extensive gardens and a particularly good place to bring children for outdoor entertainment as the waters edge area is safely fenced off. Internally clean and tidy, a good basic menu exists, some items of which are time-restricted to lunchtime periods. These include a range of very reasonably priced 'Baguette' Options which extend from 'Sausage' to 'Steak & Onion' with many other choices available between. Normally served with a Side Salad and Chips. a 'lighter' option exists whereby, and no extra cost, you can substitute Chips with 'Soup of The Day' if you're watching the calories. I exercised this option on my last visit, only to be presented with the most tasty and delicious meat-filled homemade 'Chicken & Vegetable Soup' that I've ever been served. I'm not sure how much I saved in calories, but enjoyable and 'filling' was an understatement. Portion sizes are good , as is the quality of food served. Overall, it's a very good value for money visit - and a refreshing change to know that most of what you're eating has been freshly prepared - and not shipped frozen from Corporate HQ's Central Distribution Depot somewhere between Lands End and John O' Groats. Staff are friendly and attentive. The only downside to an otherwise perfect venue is parking space availability - or lack of it on a busy day: so if you're planning a Saturday/Sunday lunchtime visit in Summer Season, best to book in advance to ensure you don't have a quarter mile walk to/from your car...
