The Red Lion in Lichfield

Visited for first time following recommendation from family member and we weren't disappointed. Excellent food and service, great to find truly gluten free options on menu, will be returning and would definitely recommend

Lovely attentive staff, great menu.

We saw the brown sign on the main road, and decided to explore. So glad we did, a smashing pub, the drinks and food were top class.

Went for lunch with my husband. What a shame. I ordered the pumpkin and sage tortellini for my starter, and it was under cooked. For my main meal, I chose the Braised Feather of Beef bourguignon. What a disaster, the beef was shocking it was inedible and so overcooked. However, the manager was on duty, and he was so helpful he took my meal away and came back with the menu stating he had taken that option of the menu, so I chose the steak burger opps another bad choice the burger was so salty it was once again so unpleasant I actually called it a day on my food. The waitress was apologetic,but the frustrating part is why the chiefs who cook the food think it's acceptable to send out such poor quality of food and expect people to pay high-end prices for sub standard pub food. The manager should work closer with his kitchen staff as this should not reach the paying customer. On a positive note, the food was taken of the bill. However, if the food had been to their normal high standard, I would have happily paid the full price.

Haven't been here for a while so we thought we would try it out again, never again waiting over an hour for the food and when it arrived it was cold. £32 stake was salted to death, so we won't be going back again not even to spend the £24 worth of vouchers they gave us without even having to complain as they knew everyone in their had waited to long for their food.

Take no notice of the poor reviews on this pub. 7 of us went & 7 great meals were served by lovely staff on a busy Sunday afternoon. Well done, will be back soon 👏

We just love the food here, always consistently good and a place where the atmosphere is always buzzing. All the fires are always lit and the place is very cosy and warm. Thanks to the Red Lion Team for always making us feel so welcome.

Friendly helpful staff who realised we were celebrating a birthday so they placed a candle in my son's desert and started a chorus of 'Happy Birthday to you'

We often visit The Red Lion for Sunday lunch as excellent food & great value. We decided to go for Christmas dinner as a special treat, £95 each. My partner and I ordered traditional turkey lunch. Very, very disappointed to say the least. Hardly any veg, the 2 pieces of turkey were dry with a piece of fatty pork on top to it. I was shocked. Won’t be visiting again sadly

Lovely welcoming staff who were helpful and friendly. Atmosphere was so Christmassy, warm and beautiful. Food delicious too. We love this place.

I discovered this pub through the FindMeGF app. As a celiac, it can be difficult finding good, and imaginative, food that is safe for me to eat. The Red Lion did not disappoint! Bountiful choices were available on their menu, including battered fish and chips; a turkey, ham and leek pie; and Bakewell tart (the dishes we tried). Sound mundane? No. For example, they paired the warm tart with a crisp apple sorbet and mincemeat! The combination of sweet and tart, warm and cold... Don't hesitate to try this place. The food, service, and ambiance could not be faulted today.

Our new favourite place to spend time with the family for meals. Everything about this place is lovely, food, staff, venue.

Fantastic experience at the red lion. Booked ahead and let them know we were bringing a dog with 6 adults. They sorted us a table in the bar out the way with a dog bed and biscuits!! Incredible service and we will definitely be back again. Food was equally amazing, thank you!

Family meal, a lot of gluten free options including an IPA. The food was really good and a nice find.

End of term drink with colleagues

Visited for a friend's birthday meal. Very pleasant pub, friendly staff and excellent food and beer. I live in Shropshire now used to live in the area years ago so not a local for me now. I will definitely revisit the Red Lion when I'm back in the area again.

First time here lovely food and excellent service. Good choice for people needing Gluten free.

A group of 12 of us dined here this evening. We pre ordered so our food came out promptly. It was busy and most of the staff were friendly and accommodating. The food was very nice but I did feel like it was a small portion for the price. Would go again & try something different.

A very good choice of real ales. I enjoyed the brie starter and the chocolate brownie was probably the best I've ever had apart from those I make myself (not often enough). Unfortunately I found my main course lacking. The cod was a bit over cooked and a fair bit of the samphire was chewy because it hadn't been prepared that well.

Had a fabulous Sunday lunch here today, celebrating my mum's 80th birthday. All of the staff were fantastic, so friendly and thorough. We have a lot of dietary needs in our family and they were so kind, checking everything with the kitchen for us. They cater well for gluten free and vegans, we had choice for every course, including pudding, which is fab! I really enjoyed the nut roast, Mum loved her gluten free fish and chips and the whole family loved everything. The pub itself is a lovely place to sit, great views over the green outside. We just had the perfect time, thanks to the whole team for such an enjoyable experience.

I couldn’t recommend this place more highly. The staff were so nice and helpful in finding us and our dogs a table with some space for them. The food - Sunday roast - was superb. Highly recommended.

A warm welcome, great service and consistently good food - and lots of gluten-free options.

Nothing special here anymore. Two weeks in a row and poor service couples with below average food. Roast potatoes, I've definitely had softer pork scratchings. Beef was as good as shoe leather. We've tried different times of the day too to see its better when it's not busy. Well that's about the only thing they're consistent with. It doesn't matter what time it is, it's poor. After two weeks in a row here, I'm not sure I'll be returned ng again.

This is a popular pub restaurant serving good food, beers and wines. Recently renovated and extended Nick and his staff are always friendly and welcoming. Lots of real ales. Open fires. Village Green setting. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful location. Fabulous food. Friendly and efficient staff. The online menu that can be set to exclude specific allergens or dietary preferences is a huge advantage over the usual appearance of a thick ring binder which takes half an hour to work through.

August 2024... We are not local but are regular visitors here for meals as a family when visiting friends in Lichfield. Quality and variety of meals are excellent and reasonably priced. Portions are generous. Staff are welcoming and service exceptional. Consistently good. I particularly love the steak sandwich, fries and mushrooms and tarragon dressing. Sunday lunch was fabulous yesterday - roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and at least four veg.

Great pub good food staff very attentive

I would have given them 5 stars for everything. But then that says no room ever to improve. It was a fabulous meal and great place that I'm looking forward to going back to. 99 out of 100, thanks for being so good.

Excellent venue for a family member with Coeliac - was really surprised at how seriously this venue takes Gluten Free food. Who knew that you could have "Beer battered Fish" which was Gluten free. Well Done Red Lion, we will certainly be back

Very lovely old pub. Friendly helpful staff. We were in a bug group and they came to the table for food orders, not everybody ate. The meals did look lovely.

This has to be the most petty PATHETIC pub I have ever drank in been coming for nearly two months. It's nice inside and in a nice area however it's the staff that let this place down .Every couple of days on and off I've been coming here,got on with the staff and customers.Only to be told by the manager that I was Barred and as I asked why he said that we have had complaints from the staff AND customers. I then asked by who and what about but he wouldn't give reasons,this is one of them places that if your not local or your face does not fit they will think of any excuse to get rid of you. The only thing I could think of was yesterday when I went in for a drink the assistant manager Beth was talking about tattoos with two of the customers at the bar. She then lifted up her dress/skirt to show a huge tattoo on her right thigh leg,she then walked round skirt up showing off this tattoo, I asked her how much that cost but she then started acting wierd with me. About ten minutes later I asked her for another pint she said yes then walked off into the kitchen I was waiting for a little while then she sent out another girl to serve me. This was very unprofessional !! This place is definitely in the Longdon CLIQUE !! AVOID !! If your not from the area of your face does not fit like mine did then they will just Barr you without giving proper reasons.

First time for Sunday lunch today, will not be returning. Roast beef rubbery, roasted potatoes hard, greens under cooked. Total waste of money. Would not recommend.

The place has a nice atmosphere but we waited nearly an hour for food. Our party had fish and chips, chicken pie, ploughman’s and steak baguette . The ploughman’s was over £19 and not value for money. There was the tiniest piece of cheese on it and we had to ask for more. The steak baguette had very little steak on it and the baguette was so hard I couldn’t bite it. I sent it back and the second one was the same. We were charged full price for it and not even given a dessert as a goodwill gesture. Not impressed. Not a cheap place to eat so they should be top notch but unfortunately they are not. 🙁

It was my first time here I had Sunday roast I had lamb 🐑 it was excellent it fell of the bone 🍖.I will be back.the staff was excellent the inside was very nice and clean.

Really lovely lunchtime meal here. Beautiful quality and well presented food and staff were all super friendly and accommodating. Beautiful setting with a spacious outdoor area with tractor and swings for children to play on. Really enjoyed our trip here! Highly recommend!

Good country pub in a nice setting,,nice pint of neck oil ,and a glass of cold dry rose ,we were well looked after by leah in the bar area , food was good ,pate followed by steak burger for me linz had scallops then lamb pie with mash and veggies all very tasty

Bad atmosphere because of bad management

I ordered a burger and fries. The fries tasted and looked exactly like aldis, but were mega salty. The burger was tasty but the bun was crushed and dry. The sauce it came with looked manufactured (bottle) and tasted like it. All in all a very uninspiring meal. Partner had cheese pie, that was tasty but expensive for what you got, again not much in the way of veg.. Disappointed with both meals really.

We had my Grandmother’s 90th here today I am full of excellent food, the Pork Belly and Lamb pie were exceptional All my relatives loved the various dishes they had, and the menu was extensive The staff were very attentive and did well putting up with our general poor organisation haha Many thanks to the ladies who were serving us, they were very polite, hard working and have a laugh with us.

Food & service here is just superb. The Latchford sausages are massive & delicious! Staff are friendly & very attentive. Atmosphere & decor is just so. Tables are well spread so room is good for all, whether you're a couple looking for a quiet meal or a table of 7, as we were, celebrating a birthday.Enjoy!!

Overall we were left feeling disappointed. Having the cost of a meal (Sunday mixed roast) removed from our bill was fair although I was left feeling that there was something not right about our experience. The other 3 plates arrived with the look of something missing. Just got that feeling. I don't normally wax lyrical in a poor review but this just left us feeling sad. It could be a so much better experience.Prices seem to be top end but the quantity is not and the quality of the food was also mixed. The Sunday roast arrived cold and was sent back. Another meal arrived hot but the roast beef was again spoken about - pink versus uncooked beef is a difficult debate but, as I stated' this was not charged for - roast potatoes were also solid. Smaller puddings and coffee were nice but £8.95 seems a top price. We have just got back from Rome and ate well in the city as tourists - but didn't see prices like these. Perhaps Brexit is having more of an effect than I thought.Service in restaurant was pleasant but a little noisy. We did ask for a quieter table if possible, but perhaps more fool us for going on a Sunday. Nice room , pleasant clean tables, daily menu cards, responsive polite service, good parking - shame about the food, really.

Staff are second to none. We've been going for meals for a few years now, but we visited with our new puppy for the first time tonight and the staff were EXCEPTIONAL. They were so polite asking before giving treats, heard we were trying to confidence train the new puppy so kept popping by for gentle fusses. Supplied treats, a dog bed, dog toy, and there's even a fantastic doggy menu (which we will defo be ordering from in future!). We had some lovely bar snacks/appetisers for ourselves and had an overall lovely Saturday evening :)

Excellent food and service good choice of food god value

Food sunday was beautiful.. But what's going on with th veg...costs nothing....do you want us to pay for veg....bring a bowl of veg that cost nothing...make it a proper sunday roast....no veg lets it down big time...3 out of 5.....you could make it so much better for an average sunday dinner cost of £21 for a bit more veg that costs nothing ...penny pinching tbh

Didn't have any food. Mein Host was polite and efficient serving in turn accurately and with charm. My party sat outside which was easy with many tables.

We loved it here! It's like a fancy country pub/restaurant. The service was really good and the food was delicious! The decor and vibe in there was perfect. It was quite busy and I definitely recommend booking, but it's popularity speaks for how good it is and service wasn't effected at all considering the restaurant was full. Dogs are allowed in the bar area and there is plenty of on-site parking. There is a lovely outside area and beer garden too which I imagine would be lovely when the weather is nice. Strongly recommend coming here, we will definitely be going back.

We booked for a 7 pm sitting on a Sunday but never again! No roast potatoes, no new potatoes and no roast chicken. I appreciate it was a late sitting but someone didn't do their sums right to gauge how much food would be needed for the amount of bookings they had ! Our booking was made 7 days in advance. Totally disappointed considering it was my sisters birthday and we had to go elsewhere .. Will not be recommending !

Booked for my daughters birthday on a Saturday afternoon. This review is very easy, excellent food, excellent service with a lovely atmosphere, our 3.5 hours flew by with no pressure from the staff to leave our table. We only wish we could have stayed all night. Would most definitely book this place again, thank you to the team from the Red Lion.

Great food, great service, great atmosphere

Booked for Sunday lunch as our son was visiting for the day and wanted somewhere relaxed with good food. Having eaten here before it was an easy choice. As always the service was lovely, albeit the younger staff were clearly very nervous and a little unsure of things with it being so busy and some larger tables in as well. I have a food allergy and having eaten here before I was not overly concerned, but having not eaten here since Summer I should perhaps have taken a closer look before booking. I was limited on starters and both options were mushroom based, good job I quite like mushrooms. I picked the Mushroom and Taragon Charlotte which was extremely generous in size but the bread had not been coated in oil, or vegan butter or anything for that matter and it was very dry. The content was pleasant but considering the charlotte was one of bread it needed a sauce. It was ok is the best I can really say, Mains was were I really did struggle and everything had milk in, not much offer of assistance from staff when I asked if there was anything that could be tweaked and they were busy so I did have some sympathy. I ordered the nut roast and left hungry. The nut roast itself was more like mashed butternut squash with nuts, there was no structure to it and it came looking like a lump of mash on my plate, I saw another come out shortly after which held its shape but was still not a structure that a normal nut roast would follow. The gravy was overly sweet but ok.. The roast potatoes were lovely but lack of care left 2 on my plate that were black and rotten and clearly should have been thrown away. Desert was sadly awful and returned to the kitchen, rice pudding which was a slab no moisture in it and when you took a spoonful it was like a slice of rice pudding, if only the nut roast had been this way.. Overall I was bitterly disappointed when I have had such a lovely meal before. The staff were apologetic and gracious but in a busy Sunday lunch service I think the kitchen were challenged beyond capability.
