Had a meal at the Red Lion lunchtime today and I must say it was very impressive. The staff were very professional and the service was excellent. The menu was amazing plenty of choice considering it was lunchtime. The pub had quite alot of customers and they varied. Couples, children and dogs, so it says alot about the pub. Definitely a pub to try, I don't think people will be disappointed.

The pub food here does not disappoint. Had the steak and ale pie, tender meat deliciousness with a light buttery puff pastry, served with selection of fresh vegetables and mash. My husband had the pork ribs coated in the tastiest sauce, the coleslaw (I think homemade) and salad was so fresh. The quality was excellent 👌

Food always good here 👍 It is proper cooked (not heated up) pub grub, that's big on taste. Decent portions too. The beer could be a a little colder in my opinion. If busy can take a while, but shows that it cooked properly

Visited on a beautiful sunny Sunday for drinks. The pub is very quaint and food is good (from previous experience) but that is where the positivity ends. We were told on ordering our drinks at 3:35 that this was last orders and they closed at 4 despite all online literature saying 5pm. Not too much of an issue in insolation really - these things happen. My husband returned to the bar for crisps to overhear the land lady complaining that she couldn't get closed up to enjoy the sunshine as people kept coming to the bar. We all have a moan now and again about work but maybe this should be done in private rather than in front of the customers who are here to support your business? Then it went downhill. Whilst there I potentially lost an important item but didn't realise until the next day. So on Tuesday when passing I popped in to see if it had been handed in as this was the last time I knew I had it. The pub looked open from the front - all signs out and the beer garden door was unlocked. On opening it was dark inside so I just popped my head round the door and called out 'Hello'. After another 'hello' the landlady stuck her head around a corner and my interaction went as follows: Me: Hi I'm so sorry to interrupt but I was here Sund.... Her: We are closed (very abrupt and rude) Me: Oh I'm sorry the door was unlocked can I just ask if.... Her: NO we are closed you have to leave. I am just a chef here I don't know anything. Leave now. Me: Umm ok I just Her: GO AWAY Me: OK, do you have a number I can call about lost property, its just it is a very important key Her: Find it online now you need to leave. Get off the property!! Me: There is absolutely no need to be so rude, don't worry I will take my business elsewhere I am still pretty shocked at being spoken too with such unprovoked rudeness. I did not just barge into the pub - I popped my head round the door to ask a question. I apologized as I hadn't quite realized they were closed as you can't really see in through the door. Also to barefaced lie and tell me she was just a chef? Having been a few times I very well know she is the land lady. It's ok if you can't help me but just be polite or at the very least civil. Absolutely disgusted and certainly will not be back. So disappointing as the pub used to be so welcoming a few years ago, we used to go a lot. Local businesses need all the support they can get right now so why on earth would you treat people like this?

Visited here at the end of August and had a great experience! I was quite shocked to read some of the recent reviews on here as this was not my experience at all - in fact, the landlady was very friendly and welcoming, pausing to chat with our table and other guests, and made sure to check on us during service. The food was absolutely delicious - I had the Phad Thai which was very authentic and tasty and the portion size was huge. My family had the steak and ale pie and the swordfish niçoise salad which they both said was equally as good. I would definitely recommend The Red Lion to anyone in the Suffolk/ Essex surrounding area and I will also be returning!

Went for dinner with family, against their wishes,as said the Landlady is incredibly rude. They were not wrong.Asked if could have potatoes instead of chips, a quick and sharp "NO"asked why, really gave no answer, just bad attitude. Almost took Mum in her Wheelchair to have a lunchtime drink, she had Whiskey and gingerale, (she also had this when we were there for dinner), went yesterday lunchtime only to be told ,they don't and have never served Gingerale. To which I replied, "we had it twice last week". The Landlady became SO RUDE and SNARKY,told me I was rude,of course I told her she was rude, she then suggested "maybe we should find somewhere else to go".In all my years of traveling globally, never have I encountered such a vile, rude and snarky Landlady..She has no business running a Public Inn!! I'm surprised she has any business. The staff are all very young adults, a older adult would tell her where to go..The food served is good,I can't fault that, but just as good somewhere else without the the foul attitude.. If you want a pleasant experience, do not visit this establishment..I recommend AVOIDING this Pub.

I have visited the pub on several occasions & have enjoyed the experience. Sadly, this time I was not so lucky. As it was a nice day we decided to walk the 25 minutes to the pub. Our family had come to visit so there were 10 of us, 5 adults & 5 children. On arriving at the pub I was informed that the maximum size group they catered for was 8 people. I said we were happy to be treated as 2 separate groups of 5 & that we would not expect both sets of meals to be served at the same time. The server said he would check with the kitchen & let us know. He came back a few minutes later & told us that we would not be able to eat there today. This came from not only the kitchen staff but the owners too. I questioned what the problem was, as if 2 parties of 5 now arrived they would serve them, & as we were happy to be treated that way, what was the problem? I was told that there was nothing he could do. I understand that the kitchen may not be able to cater for 10 people simultaneously, but we were happy to be flexible. We ordered a taxi for 3 of us, picked up our 3 cars, went back to the pub to collect the remaining 2 adults & 5 children, then drove to an establishment that could & would serve us.

Don't do tables for 10 people and won't split it down into two tables. But when asked if they would do 2 different groups of 5 they said yes! Absolute idiots, clearly don't care about having customers more about being too lazy to accommodate! Won't be coming back! 😡

We selected this pub for a night out with friends based on reputation and location. We had a pleasant time having pre-drinks outside prior to our table being ready (booked for 7pm). The landlady came to get us at 7.05 and we were seated in pleasant surroundings. Unfortunately it was less satisfactory from here. One of our party requested an allergen log but was told they did not have one. Of the two starters ordered, one had a hair in it. The dish was removed and a free drink offered. Unfortunately the same member of our party found another different hair in her main course amongst her salad. Whilst this is dissatisfactory, I am still shocked by the landlady’s response now. She approached our table and requested to take the lady who had found the hair aside for a private conversation and essentially went on to imply that it was her hair that had fallen out of her hair and underneath her dinner. She said her chef has a shaved head, that in her XX number of years in the industry she had never had a hair reported in her food. She kept asking my friend to come with her to examine the hair and at no point acknowledged responsibility or apologised. The bill was then presented to us without asking if we wanted further drinks or dessert (basically they wanted us to leave). When they eventually approached us to take payment they said they thought it was best if we find ‘somewhere else to drink’. I am not sure I have ever received such terrible customer service from this type of establishment and I will be very careful to want to all of my local friends not to bother. This was a humiliating experience I would not wish on anyone.

I took my family for my daughter’s birthday lunch, we had mackerel pate & toast & a selection of roast dinners. The toast was burnt & like charcoal, we asked for replacement toast, but the taste of charcoal was hard to get rid of. The burnt toast had been placed burnt side down to hide it. The roast meals had soggy roast potatoes, parsnips & carrots, absolutely disgusting. We waited 30mins to have the plates taken away, we had to ask for the table to be cleared. The waitress came a started to the plates & cutlery away, she dropped a knife twice on to my son in law splashing gravy all over his clothes. So easily could have been five stars across the board as food was very good. However, although the girls serving were very polite, they have to deliver the message from the kitchen regarding not being able to order mash with a pie instead of chips and not allowed to serve extra gravy. We were told they prepare exact portions for each meal choice so cannot give away the mash that is designated to a different meal choice. No extra gravy as they make enough to go in the pies and no more. The pub advertises home cooked food - well peel a few spuds and make some more mash! Chuck some bisto in a jug and make some gravy! Never had this is any other restaurant so it’s disappointing to see a pub that has such good food let down by expecting guests to eat what the pub decides rather than giving the customers what they themselves choose to eat and are paying for - disappointed ☹️

We have been coming here once a month for just over a year as a girls get together catch up. We are aware of the early closing of 10pm. Food was excellent as usual. But the issue we had was being constantly chased by staff, on this occasion, one of our party was a little late for our booked time of 7.30pm. Staff came over and said we needed to order soon as kitchen was closing this was 7.40. At 9.10 staff came and asked us to pay as till was closing. At 9.30pm we were basically told to leave as they were closing. We were outside in the car park at 9.40pm when all the staff left, the doors were locked and the car park lights turned off, leaving us in total darkness. On getting home I checked the opening times and they still stated10pm as closing. We were a little disapointed, as we felt our night out had been tainted by the pressure to hurry up our evening. We would have spent more on further drinks and maybe desserts, had we not been chased out the door.

If you're looking for a restaurant that's runs off rations like world war two! Then sturmer lion is definitely the place for you! I spent just under £200 this evening and my partner ordered a steak which was £26 pounds and asked for a egg which he was quite happy to pay for! They said they couldn't do a egg as all their meals are rationed imagine a person who has a dietary requirement they certainly wouldnt cater for you! I go to order another drink and they said that would be our last drink as we was rude as we asked for another egg and my partner was not rude towards the waitress although a little annoyed an egg was to much hassle and did make a little joke although they where already making a egg for my child's gammon. I will be taking my business elsewhere now! I hope someone new takes over the pub who are people friendly and appreciative of local people spending money! Excellent Sunday lunch - freshly prepared food beautifully presented by attentive and friendly staff. Our three courses and drinks arrived promptly. Large portions, interesting starters and desserts, choice of three different roasts with fresh vegetables, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, lean and tender meat and extra gravy. Relaxing venue with large car park. Highly recommended.

It was my nans 91st birthday and they were absolutely amazing, we were all too full for dessert after the amazing food but they still brought a little scoop of ice cream with a candle for her. Staff were amazing and so friendly - they also had a beautiful garden where I will definitely come back and have a drink! Couldn’t recommend enough :)

What I think was the manager (older dark haired female) was the RUDEST most CONDESCENDING & PATRONISING person I’ve ever met i my life. She spoke to my wife like she was a piece of dirt from her shoe. Just because she couldn’t accommodate a buggy in an empty pub??? I wish I could give less stars. What an incredibly horrible witch. Avoid avoid avoid!!!!!

Fantastic village pub a stone's throw away from town. Great destination for a summer drink or a lunch nibble. Easily accessible from the old railway line allowing you to recharge on a relaxing walk or cycle.

Went for lunch today -burgers and stuffed aubergines were huge! Beautiful location, inside or outside seating. Polite, helpful staff. Great portion sizes. Definitely worth a visit.

LOVE this pub. We call in every now & again for a beer but today we stopped for food too. Their vegetarian options are plentiful & varied, no spinach & ricotta cannelloni in sight! Delicious & freshly cooked, generous portions too. The team is welcoming & warm, efficient & friendly. Even Nora, the pub dog! Visit & make your own mind up. It's a gem with lots of heart & soul

Argument started just as we arrived and told there is board outside with instructions on, instead of being advised politely! Told them our table number but got this mixed up but not told that food was placed outside as we were playing with children in the grounds so got our food cold! I went into speak with manager only to get a tirade of verbal abuse, very worrying especially as I was advised on leaving the pub that she’s like that to everyone who asks for help by another punter. Food was partially inedible under/overcooked supermarket fodder and beer was mediocre and expensive for the area. All in all, an overpriced menu, manager and bar staff rude and unpleasant and bad atmosphere all round. It was much better with old management and not the Faulty Towers that’s in place now…but suffice to say we will not be returning anytime soon!

Went for Sunday lunch and was very impressed. Food was delicious and plenty of it. No wait at all for the dinner to be served and the same for the deserts. Never had such quick service before. Would highly recommend this restaurant. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Lovely place next to the river. Very high quality food and service, not exactly cheap but pretty much what you would expect to pay for food and setting

Good service and menu - recommend the scones/cream tea. My only disappointment was that they now allow dogs in the cafe.

Popped in for a pint whilst in Rayne. Just the one cask ale, but a really well kept 1555. Spotted the menu and decided on food. Food was delicious, clearly homemade and very reasonably priced. Televisions showing sport were unobtrusive and the staff were polite and friendly. A really nice pub.
