The Real Wan in Glasgow City

Great authentic Chinese food, bursting with flavour and at decent prices, definitely a first for Glasgow. I didn't want to leave 5 stars as we'll never get a table again, but it's that good!

A perfect spot for spicy, soul warming food on a cold autumn night. An excellent meal was had here at the real wan. Take my pricing with a pinch of salt as we had 1 large plate,3 small plates and 2 sets of dumplings (which was probably too much as we couldn't finish it all). The dumplings were some of the best I have had, crispy yet soft with complex flavour and wonderful dipping sauce. Fried potatoes with numbingly tasty Schezuan pepper was a twist on a takeaway away classic. Small sticky ribs reminded me of how good ribs could be. But the star of the show for me was the aubergine dish in the wee plates section. Soft and full of robust flavours but still retaining that meaty quality it can have 10/10. The big plate was good essentially a ream with spicy chicken thigh. Lovely staff and a wonderful atmosphere of a Glasgow cafe, I cannot recommend it enough.

Incredible Chinese food. Fresh and full of flavour. Great, meat, vegan and vegetarian options. I will undoubtedly return to this place. It's up there with the very best in Glasgow.

The food was tasty and home cooked from scratch but it was just really grubby in the dining area. Loads of cobwebs, food splashes stuck on the walls and the table has degenerated so badly it had pockets and holes in it that collected crumbs and sauces. Probably wouldn't go back here.

Love this place! I can't choose my favorite dish. Everything tasted authentic, complex and cooked with heart 🙏🏼 we had a chewy vegan rice cakes, homemade noodles with aubergine, prawn dumplings, special tender tofu (no photo), peanut butter mochi and ginger tea (no photo).

This place feels like the owner brought authentic Chinese cuisine to Glasgow. You can taste the passion of cooking and the joy of sharing their food with others in every bite. The dishes are full of flavour, and I like everything I order here. Although the place looks unassuming from the outside and inside, I would encourage anybody who loves food to stop here and try it!

This place is highly recommended by everyone we know that's been there. Although the interior doesn't impress at first glance, the food is great. Everything we tried was very tasty (and spicy!) and like homemade. Staff very friendly too. Just bear in mind that they don't serve alcohol, but you can bring your own for a small cost.

Simply the best food from China I've eaten in Glasgow. Creative, varied, delicious food which is a long way from the run of the mill takeaway food most places offer. And great value!

The ribs I got were just bones. Took like an hour after the rest of the table was served for them to bring out my food. Awful

Seriously this place is incredible and thankfully a bit of an unknown Gem, the Beef Broth dish with Dumplings is one of the greatest meals in Glasgow!

Friendly wee place service great tasting Chinese food (and it's BYOB). Not your typical Scottish Chinese restaurant, with a fair few gems spread across the menu. Would highly recommend sharing a few things from every section of the menu, and we really enjoyed the dumplings, chilli shells and the fried aubergines. The focus here is more on the food than the decor, but as long as you're happy doing the same you won't go wrong.

The food is absolutely incredible, but there is an unbelievable amount of black mould on the ceiling due to improper extraction and serious condensation. As someone with allergies I felt pretty uncomfortable sitting in the last time I went, and would be quite concerned taking asthmatic friends. I also can't imagine it's great for the people that work there, and probably isn't up to health and safety standards. If they got that properly sorted it would be 6/5 stars, the food is really really special.

Fabulous dog friendly, small cosy seating. Not great for privacy or intimacy. Bring your own beer, wine or spirits no corkarage fee. £5 reserves a place per person which is deducted from the final bill. Most sittings are for two hours, The stand-out is the authentic fresh tasty dishes would recommend the mahpa tofu, peculiar rice. They also do a small selection of desserts. Overall would recommend for the quality of the food and service. Putting aside the ambience and surroundings.

As southside locals we absolutely love this place, food is so delicious, authentic and different to anything else in Glasgow. However as the last reviewer said, the black mould in the restaurant itself is out of control and I think if you were asthmatic it might really bother your chest. We’ll be back for takeout, but I wouldn’t dine in again for this reason.

Really amazing, great food. Closest thing g I’ve had since being in China. Service was also outstanding. Next time will get a takeaway as the black mould everywhere due to lack of proper extraction in the kitchen. Once this is sorted I’ll be back everyday!!

Food was phenomenal! We enjoyed every single dish. The rice cakes with Chinese sausage and salted yolk and mushroom rish in dumpling skins we're a favourite! Service was really good and very reasonably priced! Only negative is they really need to do something about the black mould on cornicing (difficult in these old buildings!)

Absolutely delicious! The food is fantastic, and their owners run it, so it feels very homemade and cosy. The dumplings and pork belly are to die for. On the downside, as they start to get busy and only have one person serving and one cooking, the service slows down. The food is a bit pricey, even if it’s completely worth it! Sadly not many GF options.

This place is brilliant. Really unique in the UK, very authentic southwestern Chinese cuisine.

The restaurant / takeaway was recommended by a friend. Was here with a relative for dinner on a weekday. It's not a big place and felt a little stuffy inside, just 4 tables for dinning-in and two of were table-for-twos. Would strongly recommend booking if you're planning to have your meal there as it's considered a local favourite. The ceiling is high-ish, but in one of the corners of the kitchen there's black mould visible to patrons. Majority of the dishes are spicy but some can be made mild instead which was just right for us. There's a small range of meatfree choices. Food was nice. The dumplings looked premade (strangely resembles a brand that I use myself at home), but I'd recommend the Mmmmmpo Tofu, it's a bit too savoury, otherwise spot on. Service is hit and miss, if you look Chinese one of the female staff may only speak Mandarin with you. The guy who served us though was nice.

I’ve lived in Glasgow for a few years and honestly most of the time I am let down by food, I find lots of places are over rated and never anything special. The Real Wan has changed my perspective on this - offering larger dishes and small dishes too, so we shared a few. Happy to say every dish was delicious, FULL of flavour, hot and so fresh, and authentic. A highlight was the rice cakes and the geda noodle with aubergine. It’s BYOB which is great and there’s a few interesting and pleasant soft drinks on offer. Mochi was also a highlight. Lovely attentive staff in this small, cosy and welcoming restaurant. Can’t wait to be back

Since Chop Chop closed I've been trying to find a good traditional Chinese restaurant and Real Wan finally steps up to the challenge. There's no "sweet and sour chicken" or "beef in black bean sauce" here; this is dumplings, broths and custom recipes passed down through families. We had 7 dishes between the 2 of us -with 2 big dishes and 5 small ones - and all were amazing. Flat noodles and beef in chilli oil, geds with aubergine and steamed buns / dumplings on the side. Absolutely amazing and a very tingly mouth from the chilli afterwards. Book in advance as they only have 4(?) tables

Literally the best food and lovely relaxed vibe, have been so many times now and every time I go I can't stop talking about it for weeks, so tasty and really good for vegan options. Everything is a very reasonable price and the booking fee that they take off at the end makes total sense! The sauté potatoes are my absolute favourite and think about them all the time just so good, but everything is exceptional!

The portions were a little small but if you get a starter or a side you will be sorted! Fantastic taste. The bao buns could use a little more filling though!

Finally managed to visit after wanting to for ages and I was left absolutely besotted! The food is incredible - fresh and authentic, clearly with a lot of thought and love put into it. Highly recommend the grilled pork dumplings, and the chunky Geda noodles with beef ragù might have been one of my favourite dishes I've ever tried. All accompanied by super friendly and attentive staff. Can't wait to be back!

The food was delicious and authentic, but I think the portion could be larger in this price range. The store inside was small, could not accommodate too many people, but the menu options was abundant, if I have chance I would try many of them.

I am usually a great fan of The Real Wan, but my recent visit left me deeply disappointed. Despite the restaurant's reputation, our experience was marred by an unfair reservation policy and the substandard quality of food. We were required to make an online reservation, charged £5 per person in advance. However, upon arrival, the restaurant was hardly crowded, making us question the necessity of the reservation in the first place. One of our friends couldn't make it, and we expected a refund for their reservation fee. To our dismay, we were informed that it could only be deducted from our bill, and even then, only £10 of the £15 was accounted for. We were, therefore, unfairly charged an extra £5. The food, a key aspect of any dining experience, also fell short of expectations. The rice noodles we ordered were served broken into small pieces, negatively affecting our overall experience. The staff seemed unfamiliar with the menu, which did not help either. Following our visit, we communicated our concerns to the management and received responses filled with justifications instead of solutions. Even after several exchanges, our request for a refund of the unfairly charged amount has yet to be addressed appropriately. While I understand the challenges restaurants face, it is crucial to ensure that customers are treated fairly and their complaints are addressed in a satisfying manner. Regrettably, that has not been our experience with The Real Wan this time around. I sincerely hope that they take this feedback into account and work towards improving their customer service and food quality.

One of the best restaurants I've been to, the food was amazing and all the staff were really lovely. I'd 100% recommend.

1st time.didnt like 3 of 5 dishes I ordered.shabby dirty paintwork. Toilet a disgrace .didn't like caramel ribs.cucumber salad was boring.marbled beef dish bland.doubt ill go back.

Exceptional food. Beef ragu with noodles and a veggie bao bun to start were some of the best things I've had in Glasgow in ages.

I lived in China for long time and never found anything that compared to the culinary experience I had there. Highly recommend the number 1 on the menu, with dumplings or noodles, or both!!

Visited recently with a couple of friends, and we all left thoroughly impressed. The lamb dumplings in broth made for a unique dish, a complex balance of subtle umami flavours. The bean curd skins and chunky noodles were also spectacular. Will definitely return.

I am from Guiyang where the real wan's food is from. We were traveling in Scotland and heard about this restaurant. It's absolutely authentic and tastes exactly like my hometown. 100% recommended if you want to taste some real authentic Chinese food.

Some of the best food in Glasgow. Small, casual, and friendly. Relaxed atmosphere and incredible food. Order the geda noodles.

We waited ages to be acknowledged and seated even though we had a reservation, only one member of staff on at the time. Service was slow and incompetent, little things like forgetting our glasses for BYOB so we were unable to have drink waiting on our meal. While being asked very politely to move table, this was unprofessional and handled wrongly. The staff were very sweet and kind but just needed more training. The café was so dirty, there were cobwebs hanging from the lanterns and the walls and flooring around the window were filthy and dusty and all messy boxes were unsightly. It felt so unclean. We are all up for a rustic and authentic dining experience, but this was off putting. The only reason we stayed was because we had heard how good the food was, and this did not disappoint, everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. The options were great too! Loved it. Although nothing came at the one time and we pretty much ate our meals separately. Sadly, we will not be back.

I’m from Guizhou myself and been to Guiyang all the time and I can say the Spicy Chicken rice noodles is super authentic. It literally takes me back home 🤤 just wish we can have zhe‘er gen next time 🤭

The five-star status is thoroughly deserved! Brilliant food, friendly staff, and a really nice atmosphere. Lots of vegan options. The flavours are honestly outstanding - by far best Chinese I've had in the UK. Really small venue, so book in advance, especially if you want a table for 4+.

The most authentic and best Chinese food I've ever had!!! i honestly can't fault this place. Every dish was cooked to perfection and created with passion. Best kept secret in Glasgow. A must visit! They will be sick of the sight of me in no time. Highly highly recommend.

The real Wan is a highly welcomed addition to the Cathcart area. The food is freshly prepared in a home cooking manner. The menu is authentic and a good representation of China's south- west cuisine. Lea and her team has prepared everything from scratch. The wait is definitely worthwhile The place is cosy and staff are all friendly. My favourite dishes is the You Po Ge Da. The texture and taste are combined perfectly I can't wait to come back, would recommend.

Well worth the drive. More like a Cafe than a restaurant. You would be advised to book a table in advance. The food is cooked fresh and excellent. Everything was delicious. Service was good. The pork dumplings was great, the dip was very flavorful. The slow cooked chicken thighs was very tasty. Well worth a second visit soon.

First time take-away, the best, great food

This is absolutely amazing. Very basic little cafe place with limited seating, but who cares. The food is the star, and the food is truly incredible. Probably the best plate of noodles I've ever had, and everything else was just amazing too. Hugley recommend the homemade noodles with beef ragu. Out of this world.

It's a fairly small cafe, so I would advise to book in advance. I don't think they sell alcohol but you can bring your own? There is a shop next door. The food was amazing, highly recommend the pot stickers and wafer thin marbled beef and also the smokey plum or ginger tea 😋👌

Tried as a takeaway for the first time tonight after reading an encouraging local listings review. This place is the REAL DEAL: bold, punchy flavours; wonderfully textured dishes; super produce. The best features of regional Chinese cooking, done with serious panache. The dumplings and pot-stickers were mind-blowing. And the rustic, deep flavours in the lamb dishes showcase parts of the cuisine that don’t get nearly enough exposure in this part of the world. Comes highly recommended!

Delicious traditional South Western Chinese cuisine, a lot of love goes into these flavours we had the peculiar fried rice, crispy potatoes, dumplings and the thin sliced beef ALL STUNNING!
