Just wanted to leave 2 big mentions for young Mollie in book shop cafe on Monday, I was there with over 10 people plus big dogs . The service we received to table including navigating the dogs and making sure we all got our right drinks delivered right to table despite being very busy was exceptional, as a regular cafe visitor it’s a delightful way to start the day . Following on I visited today with only 8 friends and were served by equally lovely Jessica, her nature and attitude is very much appreciated and nothing is too much trouble. Keep up the exceptional standards that we have come to appreciate more and more , also dogs are always given same level of love and consideration by all readers staff Mr n wady Liverpool

There was a long queue on a hot day and the service was really slow even though there were 3 staff behind the counter. Two were talking and one of the two was on her phone, which is very unusual to see and surely against food hygiene? Instead of taking hot drink orders down the line to save time, it was happening one order at a time so it was a bit frustrating to queue for a long time while watching the talking and phone use (while drinking her own drink). It didn't seem to make sense!

The Reader Café is located in the impressive mansion house in Calderstones Park. With such a lovely exterior and with such a lovely vista from this café, one would expect this place to be truly wonderful. Regrettably, this place stops short of this expectation. By way of positives, the take-out latté I ordered and the Victoria sponge cake were both very nice indeed, so no complaints there. However, the service was really quite slow. Fair enough if the place was heaving however there were only a couple of customers in front of us. Once I'd ordered my (simple) order, the staff couldn't have been more leisurely preparing people's ordered. Upon ordering the slice of Victoria sponge cake, it took the staff around 5 minutes before they got round to cutting this - a task which would ordinarily take 30 seconds in my personal kitchen. This made me feel like my order had been forgotten by the staff and I was already mentally preparing myself to reaffirm what I had paid for. Also, the prices here are very odd. They charge £1.30 for cups of tea, which in my books in really quite reasonable seeing as Costa charges you at least £2.00. However, a latté was £3 which seemed a bit excessive. Also, cakes are at least £3 which is a bit of a rip off. They served a vegan chocolate cake however they forgot to include a non-vegan version which was a disappointment. There was also limited indoor seating in this place, which is a pity considering the size of Calderstones Park and the number of visitors it attracts. This might be something you wish to bear in mind if you are visiting on a rainy day. Overall, I wouldn't discourage you visiting The Reader Café if you're in Calderstones Park for the day, however it's not a café I would rush to if you're not in the park.

Arrived at 2.30pm with my dog , i was hungry so wanted a hot meal . Usually home made scouse is on menu. , which was delicious. Unfortunately it wasnt . I ordered fish goujons with chunky chips peas and tartare sauce . So dissatisfied. When my food came , It was large battered fish fingers , which you could tell they had been deep fried from frozen , They were horrible you could smell grease and the chips were horrible . £9.95 never again !

Here with a friend following a good walk. I'd been the park countless times, but this my first visit to the café. It was a Monday, mid afternoon, and the place was chokka. Fortunately it was a mild, sunny day, so we took a table outside. Inside, the place was nice, light, airy, and very clean. And the staff very friendly and helpful. I went for their club sandwich, a toasted triple decker, chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce and tomato sandwich, accompanied with fries. The sandwich was delicious and the fries crispy and golden. To drink, a mug of tea, also good. Overall I was impressed, and will definitely be back next time I visit the park. Well worth a visit.

Very disappointed. On entering, the cafe was empty with 2 male and 2 female staff behind the counter. I asked what flavour the muffins were and none of the four staff knew the answer. The two males were standing chatting and drinking their own drinks looking totally disinterested and made no attempts to find out the answer to my query. I ordered a scone and a large coffee. The scone was hard, almost stale. There was no cream. And they forgot about my coffee. I had finished my scone just as one of the female waitresses noticed I was sitting without a drink. All in all very lazy and unattentive performance by staff and poor quality of food. Not my usual experience of The Reader.

The venue in the park is lovely, but because of that I feel they are resting on their laurels a bit. I came with three friends for lunch after a walk. The food was pretty awful. My pizza slice was overpriced and bland. One of our party said her sandwich was so cold it was as if it had just come out of the fridge. And someone who had fish fingers said they were rock hard. I love Calderstones, and the Reader, but I wouldn’t recommend going for lunch. The cakes looked nice, though!

As a treat took our family to the Reader for a Cuthberts afternoon tea, I’d heard great things and we were looking forward to it, unfortunately the comfortable, cosy atmosphere of Cuthberts previous premises does not seem to have followed them to Calderstones. The tea was served in a large sterile hall at long tables much like a corporate event, the tea came but half of us had no cups… we had to ask several times for the children’s lemonade and several times for more milk. Food wise it was nice but nothing like the pictures on the internet… if you don’t like carrot cake say in advance! It wasn’t bad but certainly lacked the spark I expected…. for the price paid I expected more

I was really annoyed the other day for a take out when I had been waiting quite a while in the queue, only for the girl who was serving at the til to ignore me once I got to the front and served the customer behind me instead. This made me really annoyed and exasperated, as it was very insulting to be ignored like that after I queued up for a while, like how could you not notice me, was I invisible all of a sudden?! The customer behind me also was dishonest to take his turn instead of saying I was next, as it seemed like he was possibly sneakily trying to cut infront of me, and he succeeded too. This felt really uncomfortable for me as I have anxiety, social anxiety and ASC so this really left me feeling unsettled to be in this situation all of a sudden, and I did end up getting her attention after he had gone, which wasnt easy for me as I felt so annoyed and angry that I just felt like leaving, and I have social anxiety of course, but I didnt say I'd been ignored, as like I say I have social anxiety so it wasnt easy, but I worry it looked like to her and the customer behind me that I had pushed in, which was so unfair considering I was the one who had been cut in front of. This place is way too disorganized like a lot of people have said, and you need to really be more organized, for example having more staff available to prevent queues and actually paying attention to customers in the queues. I immediately regretted coming here and will never be returning here again, so at least I have lived and learned. Very disappointed and unhappy.

I popped in to get a sandwich etc. I had to ask multiple times and was at first ignored, then told that a colleague from the kitchen was coming out to serve me, despite several staff members doing nothing, one of whom was eating a pack of crisps when she was meant to be on duty serving people. Sods Law: she was the one who finally came over and deigned to attend to me. I told her I would prefer someone to serve me who hadn't just been eating food, whereupon she gave me a sarcastic smirk and said she'd fetch someone. It was at this point that I left.

Having been a few times. I now need to comment on how rough this place is. Firstly always crowded. the disabled access is poor . You need to open up more rooms. Always too busy and queuing a more indifferent set of staff you cant find. A smile is a must in the Hospitality Industry. Service ... basically indifferent, dissinterested . The main girl on the till didnt actually look at me once... when she was taking my order. They then told us to wait in the foyer as it was full. We were completely forgotten about. The hot chocolate not hot. The Paninis, dry, not toasted, ham and cheese had been thrown in with no dressings offered. Sorry to say this but you need to seriously up your game.Joes cafe probably better. They dont take pride in their food presentation or taste. I suggest the managers eat their own food and check its tasty. People go back because of the location and the fact this is a captive audience. But there are far better cafes in South Liverpool.

I have been going to this cafe for many years from when it first opened in the old cafe to when it was in the porta cabin. During this time there was an offer on of filter coffee or nomal tea and two slices of toast for two pounds. Since the new cafe opened it seems that it can't be decided if this offer is still available, if you query it it's available but just not on a key on the till, I've been told this four times since it opened its like russian roulette as to whether you get a staff member who gives you this offer as they have worked there for ages or you have to go through the whole rigmarole of having to explain the offer and then they have to o into the kitchen to ask someone. There were a lot of regular customers to this cafe over the years and can someone just decide it's on/off and if on put it on a key o the till. I like the new cafe and I can see the prices going up slightly but the £2 cost previously would now be £3 which seems a bit of a price hike.

Ordered fish and chips. The service and staff are fantastic, unfortunately they are let-down by the quality of the food. The fish was dripping in oil which oozed out when I cut the fish. The batter was thin, tasteless and overcooked. The chips where overcooked and dry, tasteless, even with lots of salt and vinegar there was no rescue for this meal, hence it was returned and I was offered chips as an alternative, still no better left them. I had the overall impression that the chef was under pressure and rushed the meal out with no thought quality control. The coffee was excellent, so was their normal brew tea.The salt brownie was thick and and heavy, brownies are meant to be, but this stuck to your teeth and the flavour you could not taste at all, only an overwhelming taste of coconut. Sincerely I did not want to try anything else on the menu and would advice caution on the cooked meals side of thing's. I was served really well by the waiting staff and a credit goes to those lady's, hence my two star rating.

Situated in Calderstones Zpark, this is a super little place, where you can grab a coffee and croissant, sandwiches, or a nice lunch. With seating outside, this is a very popular place for all visitors, dog walkers and everyone makes return visits.Small interior with about 8 tables, this can be a very busy place, but on dry days, the outside seating really helpsAgain, great staff and the place is dog friendly, but keep your pooches on a lead

Visited this cafe for breakfast this morning and arrived at around 10am. Decided to have sausage on toast bacon on toast tea and Mocha. Total cost £10.20Enjoyed our purchase even though it was very busy. We also managed to get a table. The good thing about this cafe is that they allow dogs in as long as they are on a lead

Absolutely loved this Cafe when first opened .Very much needed in this beautiful park however service lately dreadfully slow and totally uninterested when gone in to check on food and this was only for toast. Also Cafe toilets are the park toilets and they pass the buck so to speak that's it's the councils problemThey are fowl vile dirty disgusting toilets and should not even be open for public use. It lets the cafe down terribly. Sad and dreadful that they don't care .

I love this café and I don't mind thee dogs being in there but I think people should refrain from feeding the dogs at the table.I go here quite a lot and now dogs have to be on leads in the café which is a good idea but you get the odd person who feeds the dog at the table. There was one woman who had a fairly tall red setter feeding it at the table and the dogs head was all over it, when she left a family with small children sat there and doing what small children do they were putting their hands all over the table then eating toast. I love dogs but there has to be some common sense, one woman went in with three beagles the man sitting behind me couldn't get out of the café with his well behaved labradoodle as he couldn't get past them and he had to go round the back of the tables, I even jokingly offered to pass it out of the window. I know people who won't go in his café because of the dogs I don't mind them if people are sensible

Had a walk around Calderstones Park and we were very pleased to find this café. We went in and the seating area was full. However it was a mild day for the beginning of Feb so we decided to sit outside. Just had a tea each and I had a slice of the avocado and courgette cake (£2.50 for the cake) which was very nice. The teas were only £1 each. They do a deal of tea and a pastry or teacake for £2 - very good value. The staff were very friendly and helpful putting the cake in a plastic container so we could take out.People who use this park frequently are very fortunate to have this facility.

We visited here for breakfast and loved it. The cafe is dog friendly and although we did not have a dog with us, really enjoyed the experience.Food here is good and the staff are very friendly. As this is our favourite Park in Liverpool, the Reader Cafe was already on a winner but by serving delicious food they made sure that we will call again and again.Other reviewers have described here as an oasis in the park and I for one would not disagree with that description....

Vast improvement from the predecessor! Friendly staff, pleasantly decorated making good use of the limited space. I visit at least twice a week. Being a home worker, this is a lovely treat and I often see the same faces (other returning satisfied customers...). My only minor criticism would be the slight imbalance of prices. I would charge a little more for sandwiches and reduce the cost of the salad. Lastly, be daring, have a selection of more 'exotic' sandwiches, I really think the cutting edge visitors of Calderstones would gladly indulge! X

Go to this café about three times a week since it opened, it is so much better than the previous café in the park and is open at 8:30 which is great for any number of dog walkers and cyclists etc. .Very good coffee and croissants £2 for both and a great selection of cakes and sandwiches as well as hot food. The staff are really friendly and helpful. If you spend five pound you get a free second hand book from the shelves in the café dogs can go in café if they behave

Decided to go for a walk in Calderstones Park yesterday after working in the garden and then a quick trip for some retail therapy However our 2st choice was to receive visit the reader cafe but only just made it in time around 4pm Sunday 24th April 2016. The cafe closes at 430 pm on a Sunday so we were luckyWe picked 2 X Mocha extra shots 1 x hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows and a tea. Then 3 x Sausage rolls and 1 x cheese & onion pasty. The pasty and a Mocha for me at around £13Very quick service drinks and our snack was tasty they like the sausage rolls as they said that it was a sausage and not just sausage meatCan not find a fault with this venue and would recommend it to anyone

Decided to go for a walk in Calderstones Park Alert on Liverpool Sunday 14th Feb 16Thought we would go for a snack and hot drink before our walk The Reader Cafe is in a good location near the Manor and is very popular. We were early so we managed to get a table. We ordered 1 x Bacon Sandwich on Brown Bread and 1 x Sausage Sandwich on White Bread a Breakfast Tea and a double MochaEnjoyed our snack which came to £9.65 my Double Mocha was the nicest I have ever tasted. The service was excellent and the good thing was they let people bring their dogs inBy the time we had finished that cafe was packed and people where also sitting outside on the benches eating and or drinking hot coffee or teaWould suggest that you try this venue as I would recommend this cafe to anyone. It also has wheelchair access via a ramp

Daarna heerlijk koffie en home made cake gegeten.

When this place first opened it was a nice improvement on the previous horrible café that had operating from the same site. We often walk our dog at Calderstones and go in regularly for coffee, hot chocolate and a snack. The service recently has been absolute chaos, and also bad tempered. Not sure whether the staff are volunteers but they don't seem to know what they are doing, and the space is too cramped to meet the demand. This place looks to be thriving, the location in the park is great, but they need to invest in better management, facilities and higher quality food before people start to go elsewhere.

Hummus and roast veg sandwich bought as a take-away. Completely inedible - bread was soggy and roast veg contained PICKLED ONIONS! Eh? Never experienced this before and never want to experience this food again. Love the Reader but abhor this cafe. The food and drink is totally sub-standard. Keep giving it another chance as I really want to love it but it disappoints every time. YUCK!

I'm really disappointed having to leave this review as I LOVE the fact that the Reader Association are taking such good care of our beautiful park and the addition of the Reader Cafe has been a very welcome one. However, this is where I feel I need to write an honest review and make (yet another) honest appeal to those responsible for the cafe. It's been open over a year now and the service "system" remains chaotic and today (11am) was no exception. I have twice written to the Reader Org to recommend they introduce a ticket systen whereby people know when an order shouted by the staff is their order. Today like so many other times, people were taking orders for people who were before them in the queue, not getting what they ordered or worst of all having to wait lengthy periods to get anything. Today I wanted a capuccino and a steak pie. It was 20 minutes before I left with my order. Orders for coffee etc usually take this long especially at weekends. This is unacceptable and those who manage the cafe MUST start to consider how they can improve this. However much I like having the cafe, I'm not prepared to wait 20 minutes or more for a hot drink, and regretably that means I will not be frequenting the cafe unless it appears to be empty! Please employ TWO people to deal with the hot drinks. Please adopt a more sensible ordering system (example issue a numbered ticket and then use that number on the order slip for the staff?). I want the cafe to grow and be successful but customer service is paramount and if I am to be completely honest, those running the cafe need to accept that waiting times and chaotic distribution of food need to be fixed - pronto!

Once again today I had to wait almost 20 minutes for a coffee. Absolutely chaotic when only a handful of people in the queue. No system of monitoring who orders what (why not issue a numbered ticket?) means, like again today, people taking other people orders. PLEASE address the system or you will chase people away. Waiting 20 minutes on average for a drink on a Saturday morning is unacceptable. I love the park and the changes introduced by the Reader Org but I will not be visiting again unless I can see there are very few people in the queue! You need TWO people making the drinks.

Firstly I’d like to say that the reviewer who posted last with an awful review, I was sat on number 2 near your table with my partner and baby and heard your witch hunt! You were rude to the bar man by clicking your fingers at him etc. We ordered our meals about the same time, I had steak the same as you, my partner SFC and both were delicious we left nothing on our plates. The pub wasn’t cold I’d even taken my coat off and the bar man was in a black short sleeved shirt! We eat at the Pear Tree often and everything is as it should be.

We stayed at Crowne Plaza for a few days. Due to the crowds for the Queen Anne naming ceremony and a very long day, we decided to stay in to grab a light dinner. I had seen Gochujang wings on the both the bar menu and room service so was disappointed they were not available on the restaurant menu. However, the chef kindly offered to do them for me. Service was excellent. In fact, I'd say it could be scaled back a little as we were approached no fewer than 10 times during our meal and for some folks that could be overload. We enjoyed the warm sourdough, the Gochujang wings and a plaza burger. Good portion sizes and we were stuffed! The food is well-cooked. The burger could have been a little more tasty but no complaints in general.
