The Raj of Hertford in East Hertfordshire

We booked this restaurant for my nans birthday unfortunately really disappointed food came out cold when we complained they start getting angry and the bartender was caught picking Hess nose while opening drinks for customers on numerous occasions avoid this restaurant

Thought it was gonna be a realy nice evening until I seen the chef putting some one else’s leftovers back in to cook thought that was the worst of it until I seen the guy who brought our food to our table kept scratching hese skin and coughing over my food WOULD NOT RECOMMEND tummy ache for days should be closed down 🤢🤢🤢🤢

Don't be fooled by the reviews as it's all from the locals who don't know what a good Indian is due to Limited knowledge and limited taste buds. The meat dishes were good and tasty but the veggie dishes were not good at all. I had the samosas, which was oily and tasteless along with bland paneer in tamarind sauce. I had daal which was not chillie, a basic dish...I had better. Apparently they only cater for the western taste buds, not for the authentic Indians like the restaurants in west London . Also the dishes they do is the same as all the Indian dishes to every other restaurant in broxbourne, hoddesdon, Cheshunt, and Waltham Cross. The sad thing is, the locals don't know what a good Indian is as this is all they know, and its sad, because if these restuarant just opened up the locals taste buds to other dishes like manchurian, Daal Makhani, gujarati style vegetable Samosa and introduce a lot more dishes, that originates from napalease and Punjabi rather than Bangladesh then the restaurant would be looking at a big hit amongst the locals ($$$). Even indo-chinese like hakka land would be mind blowing amongst the locals. To get something close to that would be going to PONSBOURNE in hertford (to expensive) or Amrit in St. Albans (slightly far) or travel the miles to Ealing, Maida Vale, Hounslow, Harrow or Wembley for true authentic kosher Indian food. Even restuarant in Willesden Green does amazing Naplease Indian food. Its only in the boroughs of Hertfordshire & Broxbourne region is where good Indian food is lacked, and the locals don't know any different. They have not created a variety of unique dishes as you will find all the dishes in average curry houses elsewhere in the local area of Hertfordshire - False advertisement. Service was great and the restuarant was dead for a Monday evening, but not to say it must get busy other days by the locals.

Went for a meal with my wife. She had the vegetable thali and I had the meat thali . Both were lovely. Will go back again.

Absolutely delicious take away from here tonight. We ordered for collection and there was a little wait, however, I was offered a drink whilst waiting and had lots of updates. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, lots of veggie options too. Not too greasy and full of flavour. I would prefer smaller onion bhajis just because I like the crispy outside but other than that that, I wouldn’t change a thing. We will definitely be back.

Food was amazing especially as this is the only place that does lamb chom chom which pleases my wife. Service from the staff was absolutely brilliant will definitely be coming back again

Fabulous onion bhaji. Bhindi bhaji as well you can feel freshness of bhindi. Definitely visit again meal end with pistachio kulfi

Absolutely fantastic meal. Great ambience, professional service and the food is so tasty. The lamb is so succulent and melts in your mouth. If you want it spicy ask for madras hot. A great experience and very tasty meal

Poor meal from my local restaurant. Chicken Tikka Massala no more than chicken in tomato soup. Really poor .This was after the 3 pieces of chicken had been removed 😩😩

My grandparents have come here since they opened, we haven't been here for a while but will have to again soon. The food is amazing, friendly staff, Raj is a lovely man and a great chef.

This is and has been a reliable and fantastic restaurant. It is a real gem on the Hertford dining out scene. I can’t recommend it highly enough. The atmosphere is relaxed and calming. The service is second to none. Staff are friendly and also extremely professional. Good is always delicious no matter what dish I have ordered. Please continue doing what you are doing! We will be back!!

Lovely place and lovely staff. I'm not a big fan of curries but the bhajis and tandoori are delicious. Free bottle with takeaway over £40 is a good bonus.

its small and cosy. super friendly staff and very professional especially through covid. most importantly though the food is literally insane. so tasty! I like a tikka masala myself which is usually quite bland but at the raj it actually tatses like a curry :D my partner tends to mix it up a little but every curry he has had we have both loved! 100% the best in Hertford I say.

The food is fresh and consistent every time you go truly the best Indian Restaurant in Hertford if you go late in the week you need to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

We just recently moved to Hertford and The Raj is just around the corner so we thought we'd give it a try. The menu is huge and there is lots of variety which is always pleasing. We ordered a chicken and lamb passanda which wasn't that great, there was too much oil in the dish and the flavour of the curry was that of a watered down coconut sauce, disappointing. The other curry we ordered was a chicken makhani, this on the other hand was very delicious, the coconut flavour was intense but perfect. We also order a couple naan breads and a palak paneer, both of which didn't live up to our expectations and were quite bland. It's a shame our first experience wasn't the best as we'd hoped this would become our new local curry house. We will wait until next year before ordering again with the hope things would have improved. 3/5

As always the best tasting Indian food in town

We had a takeaway tonight and to our surprise, it was awful. I have eaten here in the past and it has been good. But this takeaway was worse than what you get in tesco. The curry was watery and bland, and the rice was sodden like it hadn't been strained. Very disappointed.

Thoroughly good food has had meals here before and it was our number one restaurant when we lived in Hartford, but we now live in Wadesmill/Ware and it is still worth the drive now and again to get a takeaway, but there is no online menu, in this day and age it is one of the easiest things to scan a menu and put it up online, come on Raj get that menu online so we and everybody else can see what to order, go to our local takeaway tonight in ware not bad but not as good as the Raj.

Really in incredible food. The best Indian I have ever had. I can't believe they have been there over 30 years and I'm only just discovering it. Every dish was fresh flavoursome and with a different edge. Brighr and colourful. A real taste experience BRAVO The Raj ..... amazing we'll be back .... soon

I have eaten in The Raj and had their takeaway on many occasions. The menu is very varied and all the food is excellent. The staff are always very pleasant and friendly. Do not be deceived by the unassuming look of the frontage and its on street location - this is a top notch curry house! It can get busy at weekends, but that's because the food is so good. When I hosted a schoolfriends' reunion I once took 7 curry-loving friends (3 of them vegetarian) to dinner there and to a man they were all hugely impressed.

The Raj doesn't look all that from the outside, but the food and service is fantastic. Thoroughly recommend the chicken Jalfrezi and mustard naan!
