Lovely Pub. Outdoors has been recently upgraded and it shows. Food is currently Smash Burgers, which are great. Onion fries served alongside are a bit lacklustre. Good beers and pretty efficient staff. Will certainly go back. Only criticism is the number of young children who seem to have been left to entertain themselves. Not the pubs fault.

Came across this pub while on holiday in saffron Walden. No food available but reasonable selection of ales and plenty outdoor seating for a sunny day. The pub is basic and fills easily. My biggest issue was the very miserable and rude young barmaid who seemed to act like she was in charge. However the manager was an older guy who didn’t set a good example for his staff !

Delighted that this pub was saved and money is being spent on refurbishing it and it’s looking great. I am pleased to see that it has been getting plenty of customers recently. Let down slightly by a very frosty young girl (possibly team leader) on the bar who can come across as rude and unwelcoming. Also, a bad choice of real ale on pump which really don’t taste good at all. Need a decent Wherry, Timmy Taylor’s, Adnams, Black Sheep etc and I’d be won over. Also, they are missing a huge business opportunity in not offering food. We don’t all want to eat fast food from a cardboard tray. Looking for the best pub in town, definitely the Old English Gentleman, great tasting real ales, a friendly welcome and a decent lunch.

Rude bar staff who constantly prioritise their regulars/ mates. Once you could put down to a mistake but this is blatant. Your mats won't always be there to bail you out... remember that! Female manager always has a face like a wet weekend. It's really unwelcoming. If you don't want to be there- don't! Food I can't comment on. Beer choices and quality is excellent.

Nice pub, ruined by rude bar maid who was overworked so decided to take it out me by not serving the drink I had paid for!

A brilliant job has been done to save the Railway Arms from sale and redevelopment and the premises are improving all the time. Very pleasant to sit outside and have a drink or eat from the food trucks that are available each Thursday. Food offering has been limited due to staffing so far it’s said. Good range of beverages as one would expect just wish the service was a bit more convivial and I didn’t feel I was putting them to too much trouble. I think an opportunity to have a no smoking pub has been missed so one has to negotiate the smoking area to access anywhere in the garden or rear of the premises.

Visited on a Thursday evening when the pub hosts a number of food trucks. We decided to sample the food from 3 different trucks amongst us and none of them disappointed - the Azahar Spanish food was particularly good. The pub itself, although being very busy was warm and welcoming and the craft beers from a local brewery (Wilde Sky) were extremely good. We will be back!

Visited the Railway Arms for Sunday lunch after previously visiting the 'Off the Beaten Truck' event held on Thursdays. At £15 for the main course, the roast was excellent value whilst the quality of the real ale was extremely good. This is a community-owned pub and well worth a visit

10 of us went to Sunday lunch here yesterday (12th March), it was the most disgusting roasts any of us have had, it was £15.00 each, the food had so much salt on it, it was horrid, we all commented and the staff just laughed, even when we were asked how our meals were. E-mails later just said others said their meals were good. Seriously spend your money somewhere else, don't bother or risk it, never again !!!!

Food cold when arrived. Vegetarian roast was like dog food, worst food ever to be placed in front of me. They ran out of horse radish sauce for the beef, went to the shop but everyone had finished their food by the time it arrived. Needless to say we didn’t have a pudding.

The Railway has fast become my favourite pub. Run by a community of residents as shareholders, the pub was saved from extinction by pure love and a desire to make it the best place it could be. However, The Railway was not a favoured destination for me and many others until the community takeover a few years ago. It was fusty, less than welcoming, and uninteresting. The Railway Arms is now a welcoming, vibrant, drinking hole which offers food and live music from time to time and the beer is second to none. Ales are well kept and there is a great choice. Lagers likewise. They also support local breweries like Wylde Skye, Buntingford, and Colchester. Staff are attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. The beer garden is expansive with a pretty courtyard area and space for functions which you can hire. Keep up the great work everyone, well done 👏

I booked on line at the railway arms for Monday 7th February lunch at 1.pm for my elderly mum - a special occasion for her. I received confirmation back from the railway arms confirming my lunch booking for 1pm. When we arrived at the Pub we were informed that they don’t serve lunch on Mondays!!!!!!! They had my phone number and email address on my booking request but didn’t bother to contact me to inform me that lunch wasn’t served on Monday - awful customer service as far as I’m concerned - and ruined what should have been a celebratory lunch for my Mum. Wasted journey and our time certainly wouldn’t recommend this venue. “ Sorry about that” was the bar staffs comment - really inadequate response

This is a community owned Pub, it has a friendly atmosphere and helpful staff. It had at the time of my visit five traditional bitters and a number of lagers and ciders available. All the bitters were reasonably priced at £3.90pence. There is no food available at present although it was stated that this is the intention in the future. There is plenty of space in the outside courtyards for al fresco interaction and drinking with friends. The pub is open from 4pm on week days.

The kind of pub that gladdens the heart and reminds you of all the things that a pub should be. The beer here is truly excellent, local (ish) Buntingford's stout and bitter, great beers, well kept, in peak condition and served at the right temperature - the quality of the beer has to be the most fundamental thing about a 'pub' but so many people and pubcos have forgotten this. Get that right and everything else will follow - not least customers. The British Pub is on its knees, it could learn a lot about survival from the Railway Arms.

The pub was very busy when we arrived and extremely noisy. Happily we found a small area towards the back of the restaurant where a lovely gentleman named David was working. Welcoming people and taking orders. Such a gentleman. Calm, efficient, took the time to explain ways of payment. A noisy group of youngsters were spoken to quietly, immediate reduction in volume. Our food arrived surprisingly quickly considering how busy it was. Everything was hot, cooked well, and nicely presented, 2 drinks, fish and chips, ham, mushroom pizza plus side salad, £42, happy with that. And excellent service, thank you David x

Very disappointed!! We had a family meal booked here in November when we managed to get in contact with the pub (they never answer email's or the phone) After hearing the Chef had left. We was told that there was nothing they could do and wasn't anything to do with them! even though that it was a member of staff that took the booking and didn't even think about letting us know that they was no longer doing food!. Thankfully a local from the village has put us in contact with the chef and we have rearranged our family meal with him at a different location. Very poor management and bad experience!!

The bar here is a joke. The staff act like they are at a party for them. It's a bit awkward, really.
