I have been here 3 times since it was reopened and the food never ceases to amaze me. A great chef, I must say. As for the staff, they were very friendly and welcoming. A lovely place for a drink and a chat but if you do go please try the food as you will not be disappointed. I have read other reviews and some people have said it's a bit pricey but you get what you pay for.

Great little country pub that has been brought back to life! The food is a little pricey, but I had a superb, and fat!, lemon sole with properly delicious new potatoes, with a pear tart to die for! There was a visiting petting farm so parking was difficult, but a member of staff squeezed us in! Thanks. Well worth a visit.

Before me and my friends booked the PB for lunch I did check the reviews online as there does seem to be some mixed ones but also so many positive ones. I am glad I didn’t take any notice as I would have missed out! Thank you Sally for being lovely and helpful and also it was good to meet Rob the Head Chef as well, a real character and has so much passion for his job. This was the first time I have ever been to the PB and it is stunning as soon as you walk in. Bar staff and servers all well presented and atmosphere was great. We had lunch in the garden which was beautiful and had a great view across the fields, I would recommend seating near where the Tortoise is located in the corner as the views from the table are great! The menu was smaller than most pubs, but this I see as a breath of fresh air because it shows its all local and fresh produce and not just put in a microwave and heated up. Great selection of soft drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Cant fault it! 5* Highly recommend and will see at the Petting Zoo at the weekend!

Visited again after being impressed the first time. This is such an idyllic setting, the garden is fantastic and our kids loved the bouncy castle. We have found the food to be consistently good and always well varied from each visit. Wow! This is the kind of pub I’ve been longing to visit for years. Nestled in the serene countryside, this beautiful old building exudes charm and character. Recently, after a visit to the RSPB reserve with my son, we decided to stop by the Punchbowl on our way home. After hearing so many glowing reviews, we were eager to see if it lived up to the hype. Spoiler: it did not disappoint! From the moment we stepped in, we felt an immediate sense of warmth and welcome. I had the pleasure of meeting Sally, the owner, who runs the pub alongside her husband Robbie. She enthusiastically shared the fascinating history of the building, revealing a treasure trove of stories that delighted my inner history nerd. Then came the food. I was not prepared for the level of quality we encountered. The menu boasts an array of locally sourced produce, expertly prepared by chef Robbie, whom I also had the pleasure of meeting. He was more than happy to discuss the origins of the delightful ingredients. While some reviews mentioned the prices being on the higher side, I found them entirely justified. Having recently dined at the Roslin, I found the prices comparable. The steak, in particular, was a melt-in-your-mouth experience. The Punchbowl also offers an impressive selection of wines and beers, including a notable range of non-alcoholic and low-alcohol options. As I glanced around, it was clear that everyone else was equally enjoying the cozy atmosphere and the tranquility of this quaint setting. I will undoubtedly be returning, especially now that I hear the beer garden and barbecue are up and running. I highly recommend this gem to anyone who appreciates high-quality food served in a friendly pub setting.

The last time I visited the Punch Bowl was thirty five years ago when it was a rather grotty and run-down watering hole but now under new management, it's been beautifully restored and renovated. I popped in for a cheeky half last night to find the bar area clean, tidy and well stocked! The bar staff were welcoming, chatty and helpful in offering samples of the real ales on sale. Sitting down in the bar area, the atmosphere was incredibly friendly and I had a lovely chat with Sally the new owner telling me about the history of the pub and the findings that her and her husband have found during the renovation of the building over the last year (all artefacts are displayed around the bar area - its almost a living museum and really fascinating). I was amazed to see that the original beams from the Grade II listed building status were still there and carefully preserved. The outdoor beer garden with bar area was very impressive with views over the open fields, as was the dining area (32 covers in all) - a lovely traditional setting. I will be looking forward to trying dinner there one evening in the very near future, as the menu looks incredibly appetising!

Going back to the 10th May 24 and my 60th Birthday, the wife book a pub near the Punchbowl for 8, we were shown a table isolated from the rest of the dinners and the atmosphere of the pub. Plan B, I called the Punchbowl and asked if they could seat us, they said they would love to help me out and made it clear the table would be a little snug for 8. The table was great, the food was fantastic 👌 and the service was so good. My 60th birthday will be memorable for all the right reasons all thanks to the staff, atmosphere and food at the Punchbowl. Thank You so much x.

I went to the launch day of the garden bar on Saturday 8th June and it’s the second time I have been to the PB as I previously had a meal there a few months ago, I didn’t leave a review after my first visit so I thought I would do now. Its difficult to put into words the transformation of the PB, the moment you walk in it has the WOW factor, all the old features have been restored beautifully and it has been modernised very tastefully in all the right places. The décor inside is just as impressive with lots of old local pictures and also lots of old pictures and trinket’s of the old PB how it was many years ago. Hats off to the owners, builders and all staff involved with the renovation its incredible! The bar staff and servers are very attentive, friendly and welcoming and I even got to meet Rob & Sally and they clearly love what they are doing and it really shows in all areas of the business. The location is beautiful and in the garden has lots of seating and with great views across fields. The atmosphere is fantastic as soon as you walk in and the garden bar is just around the back and is buzzing. The food is all fresh and local produce which I always prefer and appreciate. There is a great selection of soft drinks for the kids and equally great selection of Beers/Lagers and local Ales. Even the non-Alcoholic drinks selection was good so thank you. I don’t write many reviews in fact maybe 1 or 2 over last few years so I felt I should def leave an honest and constructive review. I did read some of the previous reviews which seemed like nit picking for the sake of it. My advice is ignore some of these negative reviews as I cannot recommend enough. If you don’t like what’s on the menu or if you feel menu is too small or expensive then maybe just walk away. Or beforehand check the prices and also check the menu tickles your fancy. If its not for you then maybe stick to you local Carvery or fast food establishment, its not rocket science - Its 5* for me!

This is such a beautiful pub. We booked a table for 2 in the restaurant with our 3 month old baby and were met with such amazing friendly service by the whole team there. Started with one of each of their oysters, and a glass of fizz. Extensive but reasonably priced wine list, we had the Rioja with our main course, as recommended by Jen, and it was delicious. We followed the oysters with the most creamy perfectly balanced soup. I had an incredible sirloin with fantastic chips and my wife had the purple broccoli pie which she couldn’t stop raving about, accompanied by new potatoes. The chef definitely knows what he is doing here and you won’t have a disappointing meal. The service is really stand-out and they couldn’t have been more accommodating to us on our first restaurant outing with our son. Thanks for being genuinely hospitable, we’ll be back!

Having waited a while to find this pub and to have the occasion to visit and try what I had heard about it… the time finally came. Firstly all of the food is as fresh as fresh can be and all sourced locally. Whilst fully appreciating that the prices are more than others locally, this is definitely fine dining and was expected. I had a problem from the start in choosing what to eat as all the choices on the menu I could have ordered any one of them. That aside we finally made our choices and awaited their arrival. I had the Asparagus and poached egg my daughter the Pumpkin Fritters and Blue Cheese both heavenly. Next was Potato Leek and Onion Panhaggerty Stilton and Parsley just like my mother used to make and my daughters Monkfish with Yellow Dahl and Pickled Cauliflower a creation from heaven. Any room for dessert you bet and the Apple and Rhubarb Crumble with custard plus the Chocolate Tart and pouring Cream were further examples of the creativity that the chef puts into his menu. Expensive it was but the quality and service was second to none. With a place like this locally it saves us going up to London and searching for somewhere similar and with that in mind cost wise I’d rather pay more locally.

Everything was nice except value for money. I came away feeling ripped off. The main course was small and pricey and came without vegetables. I have never been served a main meal which came without some veg, and then had to pay £5 for 5 new potatoes. This philosophy will no doubt see this business fail as few people will make a return visit. A short distance away is The Plough and Sail which does excellent food, is cheaper, and includes vegetables.

I should have listened to my friend who has already had a bad experience here since the re-opening. I made a reservation for 1.30pm for lunch and was really looking forward to it after visiting many years ago however I have to say all 3 of us were bitterly disappointed. Taking our table I could see there were already other diners in the restaurant, a table of 8, a table of 4, a table of 2 and our table for 3. The waitresses were nice and polite, no question there but when they took our order from the small lunch menu, we were told there was not any sandwiches or sausages and mash left. They opened at 12pm and there are 30 covers. After 20 mins, it became apparent that none of the other tables had received their food yet (14 people) so felt like we were going to be in for a wait. An hour later, after ordering another drink (which didn't turn up, so I had to go to bar) the 3 ploughman’s finally turned up with no apology or explanation for the hour wait (for 3 ploughman’s remember). Pleased the food had finally turned up, we were all less than pleased with what we saw and had waited an hour for. A slice of bread and butter, two chunks of cheese, a bowl of onions, a bowl of pickle and what I can only describe as a chunk of fat, presumably supposed to be ham. Oh and a scotch egg which was nice. I felt sorry for the waitresses who could sense there was a strange atmosphere in the whole restaurant, so I chose not to say anything but promptly asked for bill which was £58 for 3 ploughman’s (sort of) and 4 cokes. Should have listened to my friend.

A bit more bread and cheese, with maybe some celery or an apple would have made all the difference. One of my friends had the cheese and pickle sandwich, and it was literally just that no garnish or crisps. Lovely to see this beautiful old pub reopen after it's former owner closed 6 years ago. The new owners offer a small menu of excellent food. The beer was perfect and service friendly. Delighted and will soon be back.

Lovely to see this pub sympathetically restored and open again. A welcoming and cosy environment, whether you're dining or just having a drink at the bar. We dined and enjoyed a delicious meal, making this one of the finest dining experiences in the Rochford area

I ate here last night and was blown away. Beautiful pub with new owners and menu as of Jan. 24. Completely refurbished and just reopened. Locally sourced food, really welcoming atmosphere , beautiful interior and new garden. Did I mention the fantastic range of local and imported beers can't wait to go back. I'm sure the new menu will be posted on here soon.

The Punch Bowl has all the makings of an excellent country pub with its superb decor and beautiful building. The problem i have always found with it is that the wrong people run it. They are not so friendly and overcharged their menu prices when they first took over.

Four of us enjoyed a relaxing evening in the Punchbowl. A good menu with plenty of choice washed down with reasonably priced quality wine. I have been visiting this pub for 30 years and the new owners have made a great effort to preserve the pubs traditional qualities but with a more modern twist, long may it continue. We were easily able to order a taxi back into Rochford, only a few minutes away, so whilst in beautiful rural location it really isn't that far off the beaten track.

Took my mother to revisit her childhood haunts and had hoped to end with a good lunch at The Punchbowl. Helpful person took phone booking for late (2.30pm) lunch: when we arrived, the dining room was very busy, and appeared to be seriously under-staffed (we only saw one waitress). It took an hour from the time of our arrival for our food to arrive -- or even to get the tap water we'd asked for when we placed our order. By that time, the dining room was almost empty and even the table next to us (who'd arrived 20 mins after us) had almost finished their main course. Food was OK (we hadn't ordered anything unusual): my mother enjoyed her cottage pie, and the other dishes were fine, despite an over-dependence on large quantities of melted cheese. But by then it was too late for pudding, and there was no explanation or apology for the delay which suggests either a total lack of awareness of their customers or that they regard that sort of wait as entirely normal -- in either case, I won't be going back! A pity. (I'd have given two-and-a-half stars if such a thing were possible.)

Been here twice for Sunday roast we all loved it. cosy and beautiful surroundings. The food was real home cooked fayre very well presented. The roast potatoes were amazing. Check the blackboard for their daily specials. It's not cheap but it's special. Well worth it. Going back soon. The staff greeted us with a smile as well, top marks.

Even though we had pre booked our table, our early arrival was met with a very friendly welcome. Although the menu was fairly limited, the quality of the home cooked food was excellent. The lasagne, fish pie, gourmet burger and curry special were well cooked and very tasty. In addition, the service was first class and we would recommend a visit.

This restaurant has maintained the feel and atmosphere of a cosy pub, but with food and décor that demonstrate that this is so much more. Excellent menu offering good, unadulterated wholesome staples (lobster, Chateaubriand, Plaice, halibut etc.). Small portions but presented well. Desserts were a little disappointing. The highlight for us for the tour of the substantial wine cellar and the choice of wines with our dinner (too many - we can't remember leaving!). Recommended for a 'special' night out!

Find this pub down winding countryside lanes. Quirky 500 year old pub. All beams and inglenooks. Good choice of ales and wine. Basic pub menu and light bites. Liver and bacon but no mash Hubble had bubble and squeak rounds instead. pie and new potatoes for me. Both dishes came with vegetables. We sat inside as nice to be in a proper old fashioned pub. Seats outside. Parking. Good for lunch.
