Avoid at all costs we made a booking and the day before we went they cancelled as they had a better offer and we were in the middle of it. Had to find inferior alternative which ruined our holiday. They lied about it

Called in by chance. First two options were off, settled on Brie and bacon sandwich with cranberries. Well presented with a good salad and crisps. The building remains open despite an end of season deep clean and decoration programme. Slightly surreal feel, but food was good value for money.

DO NOT give this place “a try” as we did. If it wasn’t for the fact that it was pouring down and we were unfamiliar with the area then we would have walked straight back out again! As it was we ordered two drinks( young barman was friendly even if somewhat distracted) and asked if we could order food. There were only 3 people in the pub and they were eating so against our better judgment we ordered lasagna and salad and lasagna and chips. I have to say apart from the fact that the lasagna was barely warm and the salad was rocket, half a tomato and a slither of onion the service was just as bad as the food. We left the majority of our meal, finished our drinks and left what was then an empty pub. No one came to check on the 3 diners that had already left or ourselves and that may be because the only staff there were too busy playing snooker in an unused part of the establishment!!! Oh and I forgot to mention the sign at the bar that said “caution wet floor” and that was because there was a hole in the ceiling letting the rain in!

We were a large group looking for a quick bite to eat. We should have read the warning signs...... badly kept terrace out front, poorly maintained, litter everywhere, cigarette ends, broken slabs, long grass etc. Food was just awful, dead fly found in the chilli, stale bread, some items looked days old. Drinks not much better; lemonade was out of a Tesco's value plastic bottle. It wasn't even cheap! Please save your money and go elsewhere. Honestly the worst pub we've been to in the country.

Visited Portland Bill on a bit of going down memory lane decided to call in to the Pulpit for a coffee and something to eat, the good thing was I could take my dog in. Ordered a bacon, Brie and cranberry sandwich and coffee sat down to wait, eventually a young girl came over and asked if I was waiting for something I answered yes and was bought my coffee well a teapot of hot water a sachet of coffee and a jug of milk no teaspoon I had to get that myself, I then saw my sandwich was being bought out I took it to the table myself, it was almost cold even just being bought out, the bread was a cheap white sliced on the menu it says white, brown or bloomer, I didn’t get a choice. Whilst waiting a young lad at the bar was saying how his Mother had messaged him this morning asking him to stop f…..g being sick down the toilet ( hardly what yo want to hear) the language between the staff did leave much to be desired an awful lot of f…..g in their conversations not really what customers want to hear.I really couldn’t recommend this as a stopping point.

Had to put one star as zero not available. Ordered drinks and a soup for me and a chilli baked potato for my husband at the bar. Bar man friendly so I guess he can have the star. We waited half an hour to be delivered very luke warm soup. We were told the potato wasn’t ready so I politely asked to have my soup reheated and served with my husband’s meal. A few minutes later we were told there actually was no chilli. The land lady then came out and shouted at me there was nothing wrong with the soup. My husband disagreed and said he had tasted it. It was cold. I said I didn’t like her customer service. She really started yelling at that point. We got a refund from the barman and left. Don’t go here. It’s a lovely spot but a run down badly managed pub.

Went there today to be served my food with mould on it. Went in to complain and the lease holder ( Debra ) come out angry saying the bread is ordered fresh everyday and told me to like it or lump it and also refused to give a refund. The food never come out at the same time, we had to wait while others in our group was eating. The plain garlic bread come out with cheese on it, no warnings for allergies, no food hygiene certificate to been seen or public liability certificate to been seen. Debra was doing the cooking with no gloves or hair net on and licking her fingers. Kitchen also looked a mess, no clean sides. The bar staff was good the problems are with the lease holder. As a coach driver who goes to Portland a few times a year I will never take my passengers there and will recommend the cafe near the car park.

Well. Just went for lunch at the Pulllpit on Portland and I have to say it was simply the worst experience ever. The staff serving were really good however the leaseholder, Debbie was so rude. We ordered at 2.10 and 50 mins later we recieved part of our order of 2 kids chicken nuggets and chips 1 ham and mustard sandwich. We then waited a further 10 mins b4 going to find put where the other order of chicken nuggets and chips were. Add to that the bread was not fresh. My son in law ordered and paid for his my daughters and kids food immediately after I did and at 3 they also had no food. We both went in to find out where our food was and rest of my order and the leaseholder, Debbie, came out and shouted at us both. She claimed that we had to wait she had 25 orders b4 us, even though the pub was quiet. I asked where the rest of my order was and was told it was there waiting in the serving hatch. I questioned it as we ordered nuggets not strips and was told tough. My son in law was rudly told he had to wait they were busy. He questioned this as he had hungry children and again he was rudly told to wait so he asked for a refund so he could take hid children for lunch. I also asked for refund for the missing part of my order. Debbie told my son i law he was not having a full refund as she had cooked some of it. He said he wanted a refund and was again rudly told no and told her bar man he was night to give a refund and refused to give him the codefor machine to process it and gave staff the sandwi h my son in law ordered to serve to him. He ate part of it and then noticed green stuff on the bread. S vliser look reveiled mould.he took said sandwich back and again Debbie said no to a refund and he was lying as bread was fresh daily. So hetokd her to look at the mouldy bread. She told him she did not care he was not having a refund. The man then tried to give a cash refund out of his own pocket. During this time another couple also ask for a partial refund because of poor food and kitchen service. The bar man again offered a partial refund out of his pocket shocking service.

The most southerly inn in Dorset The Pulpit Inn is situated just a few hundred yards from Portland Bill lighthouse and has excellent views over the channel from both the terrace outside and from the windows in the bar. There is also provision for camping in the grounds and bed and breakfast accommodation is also available. The pub is dog friendly but due to a flight of steps to the entrance and terrace is not really disabled friendly however there is a side entrance past the toilets which allows one step access to the bar. We went there for an early dinner as the inn shuts fairly early in the day and were very pleased with the quantity and quality of the food. It was very reasonably priced and despite it being a very busy day the food arrived quite quickly. The staff are all polite and cheerful and the surroundings in the bar are pleasant.

Overpayed for food as they didn’t have what we ordered but charged us for it anyway. They couldn’t offer us refund because the manager wasn’t there and they couldn’t give us cash from till. Our room has been given to another couple because the manager on duty hasn’t got her phone on her. The manager was only there to clean the rooms and served food. She had nothing to do with the hotel bookings. She did not apologise and gave the impression that she didn’t care, we could like it or lump it. The other guest has gone to a wedding and weren’t contactable. We eventually excepted a twin room. The lock on the bedroom door was for an internal door like a bathroom. Using a 2P coin you could put it in the slot and open the door. The fixings for the bathroom mirror on the wall but there was no mirror. The boards at the bottom of the shower was missing. There are four sets of drawers all have different handles. Inside the drawers had paint spray in them where they had been painted and smelt damp. One of the sets of drawers had the curtain pole fixings and the second had the curtains in. The curtain poles were by the side of the wardrobe. We push the two single beds together and they were different heights. The TV remote had no back on the battery cover. We had 1 teaspoon to share between two of us. We were offered a free meal and drinks to the value of £55 to compensate.

From the start this was a terrible experience. A child behind the bar could not serve us, so she went to get an older child who was able to actually speak to us. We placed an order of two cheese and pickle sandwiches. The first child then came and told us there was no pickle and would bacon and cheese be ok. We declined and cancelled the order. Child 2 was unable to operate the till to give us a refund. There were a number of dissatisfied customers in the place and having read the reviews I can’t understand why the manager hasn’t taken on board the repetitive comments. Her responses are more or less illiterate and extremely rude. Don’t know how this place is still open. The state of the entrance says it all really, broken, shabby, weedy. AVOID

After a lovely long hike along the coast we chanced upon what we thought was a quaint seaside pub boasting fresh seafood (see fig.1). We happened to arrive at the same time as another group - we asked about kitchen opening times, and were met with hostility from the bar tender, arguing that we should have called in advance if we were a group over 8 (we were 7). When corrected, we were (wrongly) accused that we were seen ‘walking up here as a group together’ (again, we weren’t). The menu (see fig 2.- arial black on A4 - to give credit, does use bold italic well!) looked promising: ‘open Portland crab sandwich with chilli and lime (absent..) served on a toasted (stale) focaccia topped with salad and a lime wedge (also absent) and fries (see fig.3). Look, we knew it wasn’t going to be the Ritz, but were hoping for at least the fresh sea food advertised. As a group of 7 (not 8+) we had a total of 2 mouthfuls between us before realising it did not quite live up to the description provided. We realise we sound like Karen’s, however, look at the pictures. This is not edible, let alone worth £14.95 each. We decided this was so far outside our expectations that we would say something. Buckle up dear reader, you’re in for a treat.. When discussed with the bartender, he deflected the blame to ANYONE other than the pulpit inn, replying ‘what do you expect? You read the menu’. Sorry, but your menu doesn’t read ‘tinned crab open stalewhich’. Would heavily advise against ordering this - honestly you could open a new tin of crab with the state of the focaccia. It was shocking. After a brief ecology lesson correcting us that crabs don’t have bones (sorry exoskeletons) we were accused of ‘wasting food’ before (graciously) being offered a refund. Honestly I’d say don’t go, but if you’ve got this far, please just go for the experience (but take your own soap) - plus read the reviews for a good laugh. Just please don’t order the crab sandwich. Heard they do a good drum and bass nite though - and the Co-op in Easton is class!

We arrived and raised an eyebrow having seen the specials board dumped on the ground under the clearly decapitated pub sign. The broken bench outside and clearly not maintained outside area added to the image that was very fitting. We went for lunch but after receiving a A4 printed very limited cafe style menu we decided we'd rather go hungry. The kitchen door was open when I went to the toilet and I wouldn't risk anything from there. Our first visit to the Pulpit Inn. After an hour or so walking around Portland Bill we were hungry. We were welcomed by I guess the land lady. Ordered a couple of pints of Thatchers cider, cod and chips and scampi and chips which were both £9.99 each. The food was perfectly cooked, tasty and very good value for money. We'll be back.

It was a cold and rainy day, stopped in for a coffee & toastie. Toastie was good but coffee not great. Lovely views of the sea. Place was cold but then there were only 4 patrons including myself and a friend 🤔

Do Not Book any Overnight Stays here!! Absolutely diabolical overnight stay at The Pulpit Inn. Had to leave in the middle of the night as sound of the fan from the cellar behind bathroom kept me awake and noone around to ask about it. Also couldnt get back into the building from a night out after none told us how to get back in and there were no lights on outside at all!Felt unsafe staying there. Room Door didnt lock from outside, were told to take any expensive belongings with us if we were out. Was meant to be double room but ended up being twin but that was fine but with everything else wrong it was terrible Smell of damp, broken blind, no working TV as remote was missing in the room. Cupboard door didnt close properly, no hangers in cupboard. No toiletries provided, even basic hand wash. Shocking as Covid is still prevalent. No information regarding breakfast times etc. Awful Customer Service in that regard. They are taking peoples money but providing a shockingly bad stay but basic amenities not being provided. This should not be allowed. Own staff are saying they dont know why the room is being let out as there are things that they keep asking to be fixed but maintenance is not being carried out. Asked for a refund a few times but am being completely ignored.

The worst place that I have ever stayed at. Stay away from this place. Location May be fantastic but then it goes down hill quickly Door Lock to the room didnt work so couldn’t lock the room from the outside. Cupboard door was broken and didn’t close. Blind broken TV didnt work and remote lost No hangers in cupboard No wifi in bedrooms. No toiletries at all A smell of damp in room. I started feeling itchy in bed. Meant to be double but was twin Didnt tell us what time breakfast was Didnt know how to get back in after evening meal out. Didnt feel safe in room. Fan going all night in bathroom. No one around to ask. No customer service at all. Weekend was ruined. Still awaiting a refund??

If I could put a zero rating I would. Shocking food and argumentative staff. The worst of all was the manager. With one of the best locations there is you would have thought the owners would make the experience memorable. Not here !

Nice country Inn style pub with lots of space. Some menu items were unavailable when we visited but the service and drinks were good. Seems like it might close down?

A shame that the Sunday servery advertised outside wasn't available. The menu was limited and some of that they had ran out of. There seems to be doubt as to the long term future of the place ( apparently due to be redeveloped) . The staff did seemed welcoming .

Cakes are all fresh and lovely, Dorset Apple Cake was delicious and a generous portion given. Coffee was good. 2 points to bear in mind….. 1. Don’t forget when ordering your drinks that sugar is not given. I had to go back to the counter and queue for a few minutes only to ask for sugar, they only offered one satchet but I asked for four…….Times must be hard…..lol 2. No cash is allowed, card only. Apart from that it is a nice atmosphere and lovely views outside.

Thanks to Owen for making our bottomless brunch such a fun experience! We had a birthday brunch planned at Slug & Lettuce who unfortunately had to cancel on the morning due to a gas leak. We were really appreciative of Rendezvous being able to get us a booking last minute. Owen was especially helpful as we had some issues with the billing at the end but he was able to sort it out for us. We had a great time and they were even able to offer gluten free options. We would definitely come back for a bottomless brunch again. Thanks Owen!

Lovely setting but that was about it for the positives. The service was patchy and with so few things on the menu, you would have thought that the serving staff would be able to answer simple questions instead of saying. 'I don't know I haven't tried that'! The food was very poor, three of us ate there and not one of us had a satisfying meal. Soggy batter on the fish and chips, overcooked shrimps served only with a small portion of ridiculously spicy rice and no vegetables in sight and the vegan fish and chips was totally tasteless (we didn't end up paying for this meal). The chips were good though but not a meal. Much more thought needed to be given about presenting balanced meals, taking pride in ensuring that each item on a very limited menu was cooked properly and taste tested. It seems as if this restaurant is relying on location rather than serving good food and that really is a shame.
