I have known this cosy little pub for about 40 years and over that time it has not changed one little bit, right down to the outdoor gents' toilets. It's a traditional old Brakspear's pub and very much a village local although it is located a little outside the main Frieth village (from Lane End, turn right at the crossroads just before entering the main village). Breakspear's pub company split from its brewery several years ago and sadly, and short-sightedly, the brewery's current owners, Carlsberg-Marston's have decided to close the Oxfordshire brewery and although they will no doubt continue to produce a Brakspear branded product elsewhere, it is unlikely to remain the beer we've known and loved for many years. Back to the pub, it is, first and foremost, a wet led pub, food being very much secondary here. So please don't come with any big food expectations and you won't be disappointed. Simple food is served lunchtimes only with the menu on a blackboard, so it may change a bit, but at the time of our visit the food offering was Fish & chips, Scampi & chips plus a small range of sandwiches. Our food was all perfectly prepared with friendly and efficient service. The main thing about this pub is to come and enjoy the timeless atmosphere with friendly locals dropping in with their dogs, sitting around and chatting around the open fire, an experience which is fast disappearing from today's pub scene.

What a find! A wonderful old pub in a delightful setting. It was like stepping back in time. Just so pleased to find a pub that hasn't been 'done up' and lost all its character. This beautifully kept little pub has a lovely garden that catches the evening sunshine, and the staff and locals are very friendly. It's a great destination at the end of a hike!

Best old fashioned boozer. If you want to remember what pubs were like before they all turned into restaurant and the sole was ripped out of the.

Very friendly and traditional pub. While many pubs for the pretntious gastro look, this pub is as a pub should be. We were afforded a very warm welcome by landlady and regulars, we had a nice chinwag at the bar, set the world to rights, it's exactly as a pub should be. Loved it and will be visiting again.

Ideal no fuss pitstop (known to us of old) for a post lock-down local walk which we revisited after too long a break. Excellently kept beer, landlady is a genuine character. Glad it is surviving. Too few of these left in the age of the gastropub...

Were on our way to West Wycombe Park after lovely church service in Great Missenden. Though we found West Wycombe, friend couldn't see where to park so we drove straight on and on through some weird places like Ibstone. Thought we would never find a pub or a cafe when LO AND BEHOLD there we were in front of the PRINCE ALBERT in Frieth. Were in time for Sunday lunch and what luck there was a table free. Had a lovely roast lunch and a refreshing glass of white wine most enjoyable, lovely atmosphere, after a short walk found our way back to Reading.

Visited Sunday, 28 years since it was my dads( RIP Alan wynee Thomas) favourite real pub for real people!as all the pubs went gastro like 5 horseshoe in maidensgrove where we lived. Prince Albert kept its roots and character. So proud to see still same. Farmers, well kept beer, great nibbles n food, indescribable in many ways, how a chiltern country pub should be , hope it survives, true history

I visit this pub often and already rate it highly for its traditional feel and rambling locals , Sunday’s are no exception . Although the food offerings are limited today was a welcome surprise. A delightful pork roast that had been cooked in white wine with all the trimmings was served and from what I could see no one around left much !!! It changes each week and I’ve enquired for next weeks offerings which I’m informed is to be beef cooked in red wine and orange. Defo worth a try for a traditional no fuss Sunday lunch

Stumbled upon this pub a year ago (Aug 2017) mid bike ride. Sign outside- ‘cyclists welcome’ which indeed we were, very warmly. Ate a nice sandwich each and left with happy memories of a little quaint and charming pub. Plenty of customers over lunchtime and a friendly atmosphere. Sadly our return visit a year later hasn’t lived up to expectations. Different management??? I can only describe the welcome as surly. I am not sure the lady behind the bar wanted to be there. And nearly £6 for two glasses of cokes? Crikey, crack a smile, say thank you, it’s basic stuff which makes a difference. The gentle plodding dog having a mooch outside was bellowed at repeatedly (personal preference, don’t call your dog a cretin). The lady behind the bar then shouted into a phone on a clearly private conversation for all to hear. From the garden. Service with a swear, anyone? No thanks. Drank our drinks in record quick time and left. We’ll give this one a miss next year. Such a shame.

For only the second time ever I am moved to write a review of a pub. My wife and I arrived on a very warm sunny day she found a seat in the garden I went into the bar to get drinks. The person who I assume was the landlord turned his back on me and left the bar area! I assumed he would be back quickly but no he did not reappear so after 3-4 minutes I left and we carried on with our walk. I have used tis pub a number of times over the last 20 years but NEVER again. As a by the way as we were leaving another customer told my wife there was a nice pub up in the village which probably tells you all you need to know.

Charming English Pub in the countryside. Good beer, wines and tasty local food, friendly staff. Generally quiet for a mid week lunch; well worth a visit. Some on site parking, more parking available in road.

We have visited a few times in both summer and winter and it's great all year round. Cosy and warm for those winter visits and sunny in the garden in the summer. Good mix of locals and walkers/cyclists. Highly recommended!!!

Unfortunately we were made to feel unwelcome on the evening we were there. "we farmers stick together" was overheard. Felt a bit like a certain scene from American Werewolf in London. Very disappointed.

Good food lunchtime 7 days a week but evenings only Friday nights as the place is busy at nights with people having a pint and a chat. No music no fruit machine, just a place for a pint of beer and a chat.

Nice cafe situated in the old bank. Staff are always pleasant and nice choice of cakes. Tea nicely served in pots on wooden trays and cakes nicely served on wooden platters. Reasonably priced. Tiffin cake was nice but a bit stodgy. Very dog friendly with free doggy treats. The cleanest toilet ever! Unfortunately there was an overpowering background chemical smell in the cafe. Would definitely visit again.

First time at the Red Lion and if they keep the quality that they had today, it will certainly not be the last. From the lovely touch of having an old book to show my table was reserved, the beautiful artichoke soup, the perfectly cooked lamb, one of the best I have ever eaten, hardly any fat and just the right amount of gravy, the seasoning that was spot on and not the over salty trend that has hit so many good pubs in Oxfordshire. Hold on to your chef and lovely young team please! This was truly a sensational Sunday Roast, served with a smile. Ps cherry on the icing, being greeted by the scent of an open fire on arrival!
