We recently had lunch here after a longish walk in poor weather. The pub was ideally suited for our needs and the owners Tim and Heather were extremely obliging and hospitable, and showed great kindness in even offering to assist us back to our holiday accommodation after our meal - something that was very much appreciated.

Just returned from a great weekend in one of the holiday cottages at the Portsmouth Arms. The cottage was clean and comfortable with everything we needed. We ate in the pub. Good pub food and an excellent well cooked brilliant value Sunday lunch . (thick slabs of beef and plate piled high with accompaniments) Apple pie and custard was delicious. (Thanks Zoe.) The hosts Heather and Tim were friendly and very welcoming and the pub regulars were great company making sure we had everything we needed. Plenty of room to park aswell, and all set in a beautiful part of North Devon. I"m sure I will go again.

We booked for Sunday lunch and man what a lunch that was! We both ordered the roast beef, this was accompanied by a awesome selection of the tastiest vegetables and copious amounts of velvety gravy. The beef was tender and flavoursome, in fact the whole meal was awesome. Of course we pigged out and had pudding indulging in the chocolate fudge cake with ice cream was really nice. We took our dog in with us and was all made to feel welcome, the staff and customers were all very pleasant it has the ambience of a typical friendly country pub. The strange thing is it’s like we’ve been there before……………………

We went for dinner on the last day of our holiday, whilst staying nearby. Wished we had found this lovely pub earlier in our stay, as we had a great evening and we would have come back. Really friendly service, with a smile. Good value tasty pub food. 5 star food hygiene. Free pool table. Love the all round Xmas decorations and pretty lights. Cheered us all up on a rainy day. Thank you so much for making us feel so welcome and for the lovely food.

I visit this pub regularly and I have always had pleasant experiences. The food is very good with competitive prices. The landlord and staff are very friendly and welcoming. They always provide a good selection of drinks. More recently, there has been various forms of entertainment, including live music and chase the ace. The facilities are clean and have a food hygiene rating of 5. There is also a free pool table and darts board. I highly recommend this place.

Dropped in on Sunday afternoon while staying in the nearby manor. We were warmly welcomed by the bar man and took two pints of the local Exmoor Ale. My wife was able to sample the ales to choose which she wanted. The darts and pool are free and I lost two games of pool... Only wanting a small lunch we shared a beef roast dinner which was plenty and delicious.

We were looking for somewhere to eat on the way home so phoned The Portsmouth Arms when we realised it was on our route. They were able to fit us in and we were made very welcome in the lovely garden, which had the bonus of being next to the Tarka Line. The menu has a selection of home-cooked dishes at reasonable prices, we enjoyed the sea bass, ginger and lime fish cakes served with salad, peas and chips.

Enjoyed a lovely meal at The Portsmouth Arms, Sunday lunch which we all (2 adults, 2 kids) loved. The meat was lovely and tender and the selection of veg was excellent and very tasty. The welcome from the owners was also very good, especially with the children finding games to keep them entertained. Plus you get to see the trains on the line to Barnstaple pass within a few feet whilst enjoying a pint or your food in the lovely beer garden. Very good value for money too, a great find and would happily recommend to anyone looking for a pub meal in the area.

I would like to be able to say that I ate a lovely meal here. However...My family and I are staying locally to the pub and thought how lovely it would be to walk to the local pub for a meal and so my parents stopped in to have lunch prior to having an evening meal. As they entered the pub, no one was around; no customers or staff. Someone was on the platform seeing a passenger onto a train and so my father sought them out. He spoke to the barman and asked if they were serving food and was told that he would check with the management. Whilst waiting for the barman to return with an answer my father overhead a rather disrespectful and offensive response, “tell them to f*** off”. My parents were thankfully not given this response but were informed that they were catering for a family occasion. What a shame they couldn’t be bothered to write a sign for the door saying “Sorry closed for private function”. Obviously we have now decided that this establishment will not be receiving our custom. I sincerely hope that this was a one-off but we will not be visiting.

I decided to try out one of my local pubs to see what the food was like, and decided upon the Portsmouth Arms. The pub is a real "local" with a couple of real ales on handpump. I chose the Otter, which was very refreshing. There was space available so my son and I decided to eat there. The menu is not extensive, but there was enough to interest us. I had fishcakes, which were fine, and my son had a steak which was cooked exactly to his specification. Portion sizes are good, and the chips in particular are very good.
