I’d seen the Poorhouse on Tripadvisor when I was looking for food in the local area. What an absolutely fab place. We were lucky enough to be about Thurs & Fri night and so had one of the pizzas (well in fact, ordered one to take home too). We did half & half on both pizzas and I have to say, they are the nicest tasting we’ve had for a long time. The place is really dog friendly too. Please go if you’re in the area, the staff & food were so lovely I can’t wait to go back.

What a great find this was! We called in for a light lunch on our way down south. We sat outside in their quirky courtyard under their canopy. The lunch menu was simple ( just how I like it) . Two BLT’s were the order of the day, and they were delicious, served with a salad garnish, crisps and homemade slaw. The staff were also delightful and friendly ( that means a lot) Can’t wait to return!

Really nice pizzas, nice staff and atmosphere. Quite small so probably best to book, but also has a good outdoor space for warmer weather. No specific kids menu, but they could share a pizza depending on their age/appetite

We eat pizza here on pizza nights. It is always a treat. The ‘pizza man’ is a master. Friendly staff, good service. We like it to sit on the porch and soak up the atmosphere of English history. Ask for the photo book that shows the history of the building.

After a very disappointing stay in a nearby hotel, feeling a bit low and tired, we had a lovely walk around Great Ayton and stumbled across the Poor House. We sat in the courtyard which had a real buzz about it. The cakes were warm and delicious and we felt so well looked after, it lifted our spirits hugely. Would recommend.

I have been here a couple of times with my Scottie dog in tow & I can say it’s a little gem. The service is impeccable, and the staff are lovely. There is seating inside and out, and there are throws provided if you get a bit chilly. Not a vast menu but that’s what I like about the place, everything is cooked fresh. Definitely worth visiting this historic building.

Unfortunately we were very disappointed with our breakfast here today. Having read the reviews we expected something really good. No tea cakes were available so I opted for a bacon bun which I just could not eat as it tasted awful. The dog enjoyed it though! My husbands breakfast on toast was so small too and really I'd say less than average hence the review. Pomegranate Persian or Velveteen rabbit far better in my opinion even though the staff and place itself inside were lovely the cooked food was a real let down. After £20 spent we ended up coming home and had to make our own brunch. Very disappointing when money is tight.

I came to Great Ayton for just under a week and after visiting the Poor House for a coffee one morning, I returned two more times in the evening! I love it. The atmosphere is lovely and in the evening there is a pizza oven making delicious food; one evening I shared a sweet pizza which was delicious. I sat outside on all three occasions and twice under the lean to, which was so cosy. In colder weather the inside space would have also been gorgeous. I would summarise by saying that the owner has a clear and simple vision of what the cafe is about, and they deliver in bucketfuls. I will definitely be coming back again.

We were wondering through Great Ayton looking for a bit to eat and fortunately came across the Poor House. The staff were immediately very welcoming and we were given a nice spot in the garden. Had a nice cold pint of Estrella from the choice of three draught beers. We chose pizzas and saw them being swiftly wood fired in the outside oven. The results were delicious. My wife described hers as the best gluten free pizza she’s ever had, and she’s tested a few others that prove their own gf dough. Cannot recommend this place highly enough if you are nearby
