The Picnic Basket in County Durham

Passed by chance. Really nice fresh sandwich- no sogginess prepared right in front of us. The toasted Cypriot was lovely. Husband enjoyed the New York. Good coffee too.

Very big selection but a little limited on vegetarian options. The sandwich was pretty nice but maybe not worth the price. When i got there the staff were talking about not getting paid enough and finished their conversation before seeing me even though i was the only person there lol. also a lil hair in the sandwich

Heads up for people ordering from here. They do gluten free bread and wraps but for people with the above CD, intolerances or allergies. I would not advise food as told by staff they cannot make safe from cross contamination. Surfaces are not wiped down. Staff have a lack of knowledge of allergens. Was asked if I wanted butter spread and it toasted ( asked if it was safe to which she said she could scrape it down) both unsuitable. Sandwich fillings are not safe from contamination. As stated, was told it was not safe from contamination but lack of knowledge of allergens. To make people aware.

We ordered sandwiches for lunch for a group of people getting ready for a wedding. The service was excellent - the sandwiches very fresh with a generous amount of filling. Good variety of fillings to choose from. Would definitely recommend

The servers were friendly and helpful. We popped in to get a take out lunch to eat by the river. Our sandwiches and salad were delicious. One of us is gluten free; they were out of gluten free bread but had gluten free wraps. We left with a favorable impression.

They have a massive range of sandwiches and fillings but I found it to be very expensive and not that filling. My tuna sandwich just tasted very vinegary. Only went once and no longer work in Durham so have no need to return.

My wife and I lived in Durham for three years, and worked for the university. We ate here often, and the service was always friendly and attentive. The Picnic Basket method seems to be to almost randomly insert ingredients into a sandwich and hope everything works out! Sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it's fantastic. And of course you can always choose what you want, instead of choosing their specials -- but then you miss out on the fun...

Returned here after a while away and was impressed as always by the choice and freshness of the sandwiches and salads. Basically you choose your bread and then select whatever variety of fillings you want. Ingredients are fresh and delicious. You can have filled rolls, salads or jacket potatoes. There are a few chairs to inside the shop or most people take away. Great service and excellent value for money. I return here often!

Sandwiches and salads made to order with a great selection of breads and fillings. Everything is fresh and of high quality. Not to mention that it is all very reasonably priced, too.

In my opinion this is an excellent sandwich shop. You choose your bead from the range available, then the filling from a great choice including meats, fish and veggie options. They also serve jacket potatoes with a good choice of fillings. There are a few seats to eat your food in the shop but generally it is regarded as a take-away. The breads are fresh and prices very reasonable. Staff work hard, especially when there is a queue and you never have to wait too long. I have eaten from here on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed.

We had take away sandwiches from here as it was close to our holiday apartment. We were delighted with the large choice and quality of sandwiches. The staff were very friendly and helpful to us. We recommend this sandwich shop to others.

The Picnic Basket, Durham, provided catering for our conference held last Saturday (30th January). We were extremely impressed by the service provided by Tony and colleagues, from our first meeting with them to discuss buffet options, to the event itself. The food provided was of excellent quality, and they went above and beyond to give us a lovely selection of food for our 60 delegates, as well as delivering the buffet to us (much appreciated when trying to organise several other aspects of conference hosting!). We would definitely recommend their catering service to other events such as this.

We use the Picnic Basket for our customer lunches and we are always very pleased with the food and presentation. They are really helpful on quantities to order and choices of dishes and the salads are delicious, not to mention the cakes!

I retired from work on the 31.01.14 and decided I would like to put a buffet on for my work mates, many of whom I had worked with for a long time.I went on line and down loaded the web page for the picnic basket and I chose all my buffet food from there and then I went down to the shop and ordered it. I did this in the week I was retiring.I chose sandwiches (various), cheese board, trays of fresh fruit salad, crisps, dips with crudités, vol-au-vents, plus small pastries. Each platter of sandwiches were marked with what they contained, ie: meat, vegetarian, salad etc, the cheese board was brilliant as was the trays of fresh fruit salad. All my friends were impressed with what you got as was I. I would certainly recommend anyone to use the picnic basket if they were requiring a buffet. Their menu is diverse and the food is excellent.

I have eaten lunch from this place for years and have never been disappointed. It serves a very good range of sandwiches - choose your bread and your filling from the wide choice available, with or without spreads or mayonnaise. Jacket potatoes, soup, pastries, coffee etc are all available. The Picnic Basket is a very friendly take away café with a few seats inside. Overall it is a great place to collect breakfast or lunch. It serves from early morning until after the lunch queues have departed.

excellent sandwiches, great value, very friendly! I have filled my loyalty card up several times. Very large selection of toppings, but warning- go early as they run out of things!
