The weather was lovely and warm and we’d been shopping and thought we’d stop for lunch. We had heard things about the Cullen Skink at the Pickled Orange and so we decided to try it. We’re so glad we did, it was delicious, as good as the best I’d had previously. We’ll certainly be visiting again and I’m fairly sure we’ll be having the Cullen Skink again. They also do good cakes and for the two of us ‘Skink’ and two slices of cake were just a little over £10. Certainly recommended.

We saw this cafe mentioned on Tripadvisor so sought it out. It is up a little alleyway in the main street but not that easy to spot unless you are walking. We went in for lunch one rainy weekday lunchtime, just after 12 noon. We got there just before the rush which was good as it is very small but obviously very popular with locals and visitors alike. My husband had the hot ham and brie ploughmans which was amazing with half a baked apple, chutney and baguette to accompany it. I had the small soup and pate which was lovely - homemade chicken and mushroom soup and tasty chicken liver pate with toasted baguette. We both had a latte which was hot and delicious too and I managed to force a piece of teabread in as well which was really good. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was beautifully presented and came quickly to the table. We will definitely revisit soon.

We heard great things about this place and my husband couldn't wait to get me down there for one of their famous breakfasts.Walking in we thought it looked cosy and our kind of place. Our first hurdle was being left standing for almost 10minutes even though we had been seen but not acknowledged. My husband wanted a Scottish Breakfast and I, a regular full breakfast. Not being a lover of potato pancakes and really not liking haggis, I queried if I could change two ingredients for mushrooms, which were not included on my breakfast but were on the Scottish breakfast, I was told no, it's all costed in and they can't swap things about, not even if pay an extra charge we asked, sorry no, but you do get tea or coffee included, we were told. So we sat and waited, for 15-20 mins which we didn't mind too much, for our breakfast to be delivered. My husband was relieved I was handing over the Haggis and potato pancake for the portions were meagre at best! The mushrooms included on his breakfast were almost missed, so slight was the serving. We were amused we got 1.5 slices of toast. My husband, who is usually satisfied with a cooked breakfast from such establishments, left feeling less than sated. I left feeling it was really a bit of an anti climax.Had we had the lunch time menu, our experience may well have been different, but following our actual experience on this visit, we will not be rushing back anytime soon

My lunchtime at work generally equates to a hurried sandwich and a cuppa whilst checking emails and answering telephone calls. I get told off for this by my husband and some of my colleagues but it's often the only way to keep up with things in community health care these days. Anyway, yesterday, I was prised away from my desk by two colleagues for a 'proper' lunch break at The Pickled Orange! Someone spied the all-day Scottish Breakfast with tea and toast on the side for £4.99......decision made and what a treat it was too. Having recently moved to The Borders it has been quite an adventure taking in the scenery and trying out the local eateries. So far the cafes and diners have been OK; that was until I followed the directions of a small High Street 'A' board down a side alley where, at the bottom of which alley, sits the Pickled Orange. It's modest, unprepossessing exterior should not deter the curious visitor because within lies a simple but delicious menu of what I believe is a fusion of Italian and traditional Scottish fare, beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. On our first visit my wife and I each enjoyed the Cullen Skink with its generously sized pieces of fish, worthy of much grander establishments. And latterly, I relished fresh mushroom pasta while my wife waxed rhapsodic over the ham ploughman's lunch, with its warmed cheese and homemade chutney accompaniment. The Pickled Orange is really a remarkably good restaurant cunningly disguised as a retreating cafeteria.Enjoy!

Couldn't believe the food on offer! So different to your normal soup and sandwich in your average coffee shop. I don't think the people that gave this place one star actually ate in the same place as me as I couldn't fault this place. The atmosphere is cosy and extremely friendly and I didn't know what to choose from the menu. Eventually went for green lentil & chorizo soup which tasted delicious and really warming on a cold day. To follow I had buttermilk chicken with sweet chilli potato purée - the chicken melted in the mouth and the chilli potato gave it that little extra boost and flavour. Overall not a thing I could fault as it was also cheaper than your average bar meal. Lovely place - we'll be back :0)

My family and I were looking for somewhere to have a quick lunch in Hawick, we usually go to Turnbulls, but thought we would try somewhere new and spotted an intriguing sign leading down a narrow alley to a cafe called The Pickled Orange. We were quite disappointed from the outset ... the decor was unremarkable bordering on dismal but we soldiered on in the belief that sometimes the best food can be found in the most uninviting of places. We needed help with the menu on a chalk board which had writing more suited to a doctor's prescription pad. Nor was it vegetarian-friendly and a menu devoid of fish should have been an indicator. The trouble is we had reached the point of no return and so without causing embarrassment all-round we stayed the course and two of us plumped for the green pea and mint soup while our remaining third opted for an egg mayonnaise baguette. The soup arrived full of promise. It looked inviting and smelled fresh and delightful - sadly appearances can be deceptive. There was more than a pinch of salt in the soup which masked all other tastes. Several minutes after the soup arrived the baguette arrived - it too contained more salt than a glass of seawater and the salad was limp and had given up the will to live rather reflecting our mood. Our hearts sank as the second course of cheese and tomato toasted sandwiches arrived and looked as appealing as a cold bucket of vomit. The rubbery cheese oozed out of the white bread as though it had just escaped from Porton Down laboratories. The desert menu had looked rather inviting but we'd lost our appetite by then and asked for the bill. My old mum once cautioned against wandering down dark alleys at night saying it was inviting trouble - she's right ... except this was daylight.

You would not come across this wonderful small restaurant by chance ~ it's a bit hidden up a lane with only an A-board on the main street to advertise it. But take the trouble to find it ~ it's REALLY excellent! We were recommended it by a young couple and my goodness they were right. As others have said, it's not smart in the plastic-and-chrome sense, but the food there is superb. I suppose they may have a microwave somewhere but it was certainly not evident in the cooking. Everything was freshly prepared (so you will have to wait a few minutes) but it was delicious, and the two staff, I think mother and daughter owners, could not have been more helpful. We had Cullen Skink [for non-Scots this is a wonderful soup with smoked haddock and potato - try it!] and a pudding for a light lunch on a long journey. Absolutely ideal; not too heavy but filled a tummy-rumble gap perfectly. There is a wide range of other dishes available, some as 'specials' for that day, and all of it "real".And the prices were very reasonable indeed for such quality. As I said in the heading, don't go anywhere else!
