The owner who was the chef too, to come out to defend his burger (Id have been ashamed to defend the burger was awful) and tell me I was wrong left a very bad taste in mouth - not that we ate much anyways !The burger was cold had no juices which tells me had been sitting around for abit. I had a block of cheese not even a slice that wasn’t even melting (if the burger was hot the cheese slightly melts) but to then tell me he’s done checks and I’m wrong. I’ve worked in hospitality and that’s one way to loose customers. Just shocking to have waited almost an hour for a burger like that and then argue about it - it’s shameful. Work on customer service sorry goes a very long way

Considering the current circumstances, I recently visited this pub thinking that their adequate outside space would make a good venue. On arrival, on a week night I was advised by the sign outside to find a table, order my drinks and they be would be served at a separate table for me to collect. Oh not during the week it seems. Customers are 'allowed' to order and collect from the bar. Ok. When waiting for my turn I could smell the stale beer eminating from the bar area. Probably the immense amount of dirty glasses on the bar which is no fault of the bar man, he had no help whatsoever. It made me want to turn around and not bother. Instead I did purchase a drink, needless to say I'm so glad I didn't order food, which turned out to be not on offer anyway even though there is a huge food on offer board outside. The system for crossing paths with other guests while they go to the toilet is laughable. The clientele are far from well mannered and language disgusting when I would consider this a family pub.

Sadly no light lunches served on a Sunday, ie sandwiches/panini's , we chose a burger which was good, but not my favourite, I think in the summer months a lighter option , apart from salads, should be available, no house white, but a good quality Sauvignon blanc at a good price, great atmosphere by the river, very friendly staff. We did notice that a family of five were taking up two tables as they couldn't agree on sun/shade, very unfair on a busy Sunday lunchtime, the staff are mote than happy to supply umbrellas!

I did a review of the Pelican just over a year ago. Since then their standards seem to have slipped somewhat. We were there on a sunny Sunday for lunch. They were busy, but not ridiculously, even so the wait for food was long (they did warn us of this when ordering). When it did come they brought one dish but it took about another 15mins to get the other 4. The food was not as good as I've had there before. The gammon was overcooked and the chilli was pretty disgusting so we didn't eat it. Being a sunny day we sat in the garden by the Wey Navigation. Almost every table had at least one person smoking at it which spoiled the experience, especially given we had kids with us, and the smoke was pretty impossible to get away from (a separate smoking area would be good). Value wasn't great. A round of 2 pints of beer and 3 soft drinks came to over £20.

Came here today with my family for Sunday lunch. Seemed like a safe bet because it was packed and in a lovely location by the river. How could we be so wrong! The staff are extremely unhelpful and rude, the service is abysmal, everything is too much to ask. We waited 25 minutes for our starters and then a further 20 minutes for one roast dinner to arrive. On arrival it was only partly cooked so we sent it away to be reheated. We asked where the other two meals were and the waitress told us it will be a while because it was two separate orders! The cheek! We had paid and ordered in one transaction why would a family do it any differently? Once the roast came back the pork had now become tough. We decided to cancel the other two meals and get a refund. Do not go here!!!

The pub is an oasis in the middle of an industrial estate. It's right on the banks of the River Wey Navigation so tourist boats regularly drift by. We had the added attraction of a heron to watch. The location therefore is lovely but you need to keep an eye on kids as there is no fencing to stop them falling in. The pub has London Pride so the beer got a big tick. The menu is a bit restricted. We went for burgers. It took a while for them to get to us. The burgers were good but the chips looked like the remnants of the end of a bag of oven chips and the coleslaw was warm. The staff were friendly and if your passing it's worth a visit but we wouldn't make it the reason for our visit. We were treated to three lads at a nearby table on their lunch brake from one of the units nearby and their language was choice!

It's an old pub with a modern twist, and caters for all generations with quiz nights, bikers nights and live music at the weekends, there's sky TVs for the sports fans , by the amount of tables outside in the garden I guess that this is a popular place with the locals. We went for a family dinner on a Saturday evening, the atmosphere is that of a "sports bar" with tvs showing football and speakers blaring out the commentary throughout the bar area. The decor is ok and is what you'd expect from an average pub, not that smart but not that tatty. We sat at our table and eventually (after asking) the speaker above us was turned off; that allowed a bit of conversation to take place. The food was good, the beer was kept well and all in all the evening was ok; shame about the atmosphere and the televisions.Maybe on a warm summer's evening and sitting out the back by the canel, well things may have been a little better.

With its new Scandi beach-house interior, this little Pelican has pretensions to be a Swan - but it will never be while it serves up food of the poor quality that I tasted there this afternoon. The beer-battered fish with chips and peas looked impressively large, served on an oval platter with tartare sauce in a little dish. But I found when I removed the batter from the fish that underneath was a mushy, yellowish substance with no flavour. I searched in vain for a fat juicy chip among the pile of what looked at first sight like the leavings at the bottom of a deep-fat fryer. When I looked more closely, I realised that the chips had been cut into quill shapes using some ingenious device, so that they were all thin and not juicy at all. They were also so over-fried that they had probably been fried twice. They were far too salty.Escaping the characterless interior for the much nicer garden, which really is attractively located beside the river, I enjoyed listening to some lively conversation from a group of locals who probably frequented the pub long before its recent transformation. At least they haven't been driven away.

Went to the pelican today after not visiting for a few years. It was quite a wait for food, understandable as it was bank holiday Monday - never seen the place so busy!!! When the food came out it was absolutely delicious!!! Definitely worth the wait!!! The Miss Piggy burger is to die for!! The pulled pork on the burger is fantastic! All home made, and definitely freshly prepared!!! To top it off, the chef even came out to apologize for the wait on food. I would quite happily wait longer for that meal!! Will definitely be back!!!!!!!!!

A lovely pub with a great atmosphere, the bar staff were very friendly. Stopped here on a walk with the dog, has some pulled pork nachos which were amazing, very generous with the topping!

My partner and I were in New Haw visiting family and afterwards wanted to go for some food. We have a dog and so finding a dog friendly pub in an area you don't know can be quite tricky. However after searching for them, The Pelican came up on our search and so we headed there. When we arrived it was beautiful, we thought we were wrong and there was no way we'd be allowed in, but after checking we were!! The staff were so friendly, getting our dog a water bowl straight away and welcoming us in from the rain. The menu has got to be one of the best I've ever seen and we loved the food once we had it. Honestly in the top 3 of best pubs we've ever been to!! Thank you

We visited for a last minute lunch. The range of food available was great. My colleague had the ploughmans which looked fantastic, another tow had chicken salads that were fresh and fully loaded. I had the chilli, which was not as spicy as I'd hoped, but it's personal taste.Although it was busy when we arrived, the food came out quickly. The setting is beautiful and would be ideal for a leisurely, boozy lunch! We'd definitely come back.

My family and I visited this gorgeous pub, in January after we had heard of its recent change in management. We were greeted by Brett, the new owner, and his bar staff, All of whom were exceptionally welcoming. They showed us to a table suitable for us, the pub is now beautifully decorated, with really lovely features such fireplaces and the cleanliness is 110% improvement on what we had previously seen. We all ordered drinks, the wine choices were really great, and the staff were happy for you to taste before you buy. We then ordered burgers, both my husband and my son ordered a meat burger and being a vegetarian I was worried about what would be on the menu but that was quickly diminished when i received a gorgeous brioche bun filled with onion marmalade, mushroom and halloumi, and amazing chips! My husband and son both huge burger fans were really pleased and actually couldn't finished all their chips!!! Brett and his team were really attentive and made time to talk to us without being over bearing, despite the pub being fairly busy! Not your average pub experience! all the staff were polite and the general ambiance of the pub was lovely. I am just about to book to come to the pelican again and really cannot wait to come back!

The Pelican has needed a fresh approach for a long time. The new management have done an excellent job. Staff are friendly and accommodating and for either a quick beer or a meal, it's a great place to meet. Good choice of beers and food. Already the place is busy and this makes such a change in atmosphere. Went down a few weeks ago also for the live music which had the place really buzzing. The summer is only going to make this Pelican more popular and really cannot wait to enjoy the good weather in the garden! Good job guys, look forward to enjoying a great quality local pub!

Arranged a treat for Mothers day, we all opted for the roast beef. Having waited 1 hour and 40 mins for our food and the 3 year old diner in our party's food having been forgotten altogether. Everyone's meal came out at different times and when asked if all was ok? 3 of our meals had only just arrived so we were unable to comment. The food was cold and the vegetables undercooked, the only thing that was edible were the cold roast potatoes and the hot cauliflower cheese which was charged extra. When I complained about the tough beef that was served rare as requested I was offered a steak knife which was ok to cut the beef but it was so chewy I could still not eat mine, nor could my mum, niece or sister. By the time I got the waitress's attention as every time we asked her for condiments or cutlery she said it was extremely busy and raised her eyebrows and shook her head as she walked away from the table. My brother-in-law sent his steak back as it was extremely tough and under-cooked and it was another 30 mins before it came back. We were so hungry we just ate the veg and potatoes and when she came to collect the plates another 1 hr later and asked if all was ok and 4 of us had left all the meat and gristle on the plate. When I told her again we were not happy she again raised her eyebrows so I went to see the manager who refused to reduce our bill despite explaining we were not happy throughout the meal. I paid reluctantly as he refused to reduce the bill and as I walked away from the bar she made a derogatory comment about my complaint to her fellow bar staff and they all laughed. I returned to my table to collect my coat fuming and witnessed the whole table next to us send their meals back as the beef was so tough and requested chicken instead. Will not be going there ever again. We thought we would give it another try as new people had taken over at Christmas and we had hoped it would become a regular meeting place as it is central for all of us. Previously it had been awful too so no improvement with new management.

On 6th Feb I phoned to make a table booking for 2 people for the same evening 7pm, hearing that this pub was now under new management. An enthusiastic member of staff took my call and confirmed my booking, however also advised that a rugby game would be shown on the pub TV late afternoon/early evening. He recommended that we make the booking for half an hour later to better enjoy our eating experience. This immediately impressed me as it showed that each customer's visit is important as the next one.Upon our arrival, the bar and restaurant areas were busy, always a good sign. My friend and I approached the bar to inform of our booking, only to be met by the enthusiastic member of staff who took my call, introduced himself as Brett, the new landlord!! We received a very warm welcome ☺.We were shown to our table situated in the newly decorated and refurbished conservatory. Although it was the evening, just seeing the river behind us, added a more tranquil feel to the place. I look forward to coming here again, this time during the day time in order to enjoy the view from the conservatory and the beer garden! Our waitress was a very polite and courteous young lady who made us feel very welcomed. This again left a positive impression and I had a good feeling that we were in for an enjoyable night. Our order was brought to us by Brett and Rachel the waitress, and it looked delicious. I ordered the 5 ounce steak with a bernaise sauce, it was cooked to perfection, so tender. The chunky chips were light, fluffy and with a mouth watering crisp. I finished off my meal by having a trio of ice cream. My friend had the fish and chips, the batter was light and crisp and she too enjoyed the chunky chips. We had the opportunity in meeting the chef, John, a very pleasant, cheerful young man who is passionate about the food, and we complimented him on our meals. Often only negative comments are fed back, well, not on this occasion!! It is said that a workman is only as good as his tools. Having read some of the recent experiences on here regarding the quality of burgers, it may well be that perhaps a review of the suppliers is in order. It would be a great shame if the quality of the produce is the main reason for the negative comments, thereby counteracting the hard work and effort put in by the chef. The atmosphere in the Pelican was one of life and laughter. The music being played was a mixture of contemporary and classic tracks. This will definitely be a new local. The Pelican is back on the map!!!Definitely worth a try to new and previous customers of old!!

I arrived here with my two friends for a lunch, and how I wish we hadn't bothered. The place has changed hands recently and is not half as good as it used to be. Who decided to put this manager in charge? Someone pointed out the new owner to us, and he seemed exceptionally up himself. Not bothering with the customers, who are obviously there to pay his wages, just throwing his weight around, where it so wasn't wanted. All three meals were awful, the drinks were overpriced and we shall now have to find a new place to lunch. What a shame, we have been going there for the last five years.

My friend & I travelled to The pelican with the intention of having a Thai meal, but were surprised to find out that the pub had changed hands since our last visit (Summer 2015). The Thai meals we had previously eaten at The pelican were of a very high standard, even to the point where my friend mentioned this was the best he had eaten outside of Thailand. Why did the new management dispensed with the Thai food as the menu we were presented with, was at best standard for a pub. The bar staff were very bubbly and stated that the food was very good and the burgers excellent. Well I can cook a burger that has come from a freezer, and I did not enjoy, neither did my friend. Would I recommend? No...A burger is a prime requisite as to the quality of the rest of the menu, can't get that right, I would suggest the chef is taught how to "make" a burger.

Turned up with friends only to find the Pub had changed management. The menu now is a typical pub chain style menu trying to be "up market". All my party were were disappointed but decided to stay and at least give it a try since we had traveled quite a way to what WAS our favourite eatery in that area.We each decided to go with what we thought would a safe choices,Fish & chips, Ploughman's, vegetable Chilly & Lasagna. WRONGThe fish batter was burned to a crust the chips were limp and stale the garden peas were mushy, the fish itself had suffered badly being thoroughly dried out.The ploughman's consisted of a nice piece of Stilton but with no celery or grapes , the other cheese was the kind of plastic cheddar of the low price supermarket variety, 5 cocktail onions (?) 3 slices of brown bread which was tasty but soft, 3 miniscule pieces of bap type bread slices not a crust in sight. one proper pickled onion. The salad was a disgrace as it looked like it had been prepared for my 15 month old grandchild it was cut so fine. The caramelized onion i had to scrape from the bottom of a deep mini pie pot, the final piece to this mess was a shredded gherkin. No apple to off set all the acid bitter pickles. To top this off the price was THE most expensive "ploughman's" i have ever had.The Vegetable chilli as the customer later said was as though chilli powder had been dumped in the vegetable and half heartedly stirred in maybe! Some of it was untouched by the seasoning and some was so strong as to make her eyes run. The lasagna was very average on a level with the ones at a Garden center but considerably less in quantity.Considering that the place was virtually empty the service was very slow. Are we going back there? NOThe new owners need to understand that in the food industry you get ONE chance to get it right and they need to pass that down to their staff !

Obviously new management. Very nicely decorated. Staff extremely welcoming and efficient. The pub has retained its local clientele which gives it a nice atmosphere. We chose to sit in the conservatory overlooking the Wey navigation. The food was good, not Michelin standards but nevertheless enjoyable. We were pleasantly surprised that they actually serve food all day as we did arrive extremely late for lunch. When we got our bill, again this was a pleasant surprise, very reasonable!Although you have to drive through an industrial estate to get to this pub once you are there it is lovely and well worth a visit. I do believe it will however get extremely busy on a sunny summers day but there is plenty of outdoor seating to be had.Definitely somewhere to return to.

We came to this pub to meet family & have a Sunday Lunch. It was easy to find even though just of the main road. The atmosphere was warm & welcoming, there was a lovely big fire going. We had our two grandchildren with us & they gave us a menu with colouring activities on it & crayons to use. This kept them occupied whilst we chatted. The children's menu was brilliant & even included a roast lunch which they chose. We also chose the roast lunch & there was a choice of three meats, between us we had all three meats & I can say all of them were lovely. There were loads of lovely cooked vegetables, just right, and of course Yorkshire Puddings & stuffing balls and as for the roast potatoes, well, they were perfect. We all returned our plates clean. There are two big screen televisions in the bar area which had Sky Sports on, there was a main team football match going on. If like me you are not interested in sport then there is a conservative area as well which looks out over the river /canal (not sure which) On a warm sunny day I can see this would be a good place to stop off for a Sunday lunch before or after a stroll along the waterside. On a cold day, when I visited it was lovely to see the fire burning. The menu was very varied & even if you just wanted a light bite this was catered for as well. The atmosphere was good, not too rowdy despite the sport, I think pitched just right.I will definitely return to sample more of the roast potatoes.
