Poor selection. My dinner served on a plate with cracked glaze. Unexceptional food. Place has really gone downhill. Pie of the day: Mince! Not very enticing.

We booked a table for an evening meal and arrived on time only to be taken to a table placed awkwardly by the bar. The table had one chair when there was two of us. The waitress did not smile, gave us no information and just abandoned us. She really could not have cared less. We both knew that we would not be comfortable or relaxed at this table and so we opted to sit on a table outside. I tried to ask two waitresses if this was okay but was simply ignored. We decided that we had no option but to find a table ourselves . I went to order drinks and food at the bar as understandably there was no waitress service outside. However, we wanted starters but was told that starters and mains would be served together. I asked why.? I was told that this was their policy! I cancelled the starter and in retrospect I wish that we had left this pub and gone somewhere that appreciated our custom. I have been going to this pub for over 40 years and I find it so sad that what was once a great place to eat has gone down hill so much. The staff really could not care less, are unhelpful and rude. Sadly we will not be returning.

Came to enjoy Sunday roast, which sadly was very average. Ordered 4 roasts and 1 pie, however roasts arrived and NO pie. The waitresse actually advised the pie was delicious and definitely worth having, however forgot to include on our order. We had to enquire about it which was not the service you expect. Only to say sorry which quite frankly wasn’t good enough when the rest of the party were half way through their dinners. Ended up having a small roast which at £17 was over priced and no Yorkshire pudding. The large roast was £22 which cost too much hardly any difference. One of our roasts had garlic skins in the vegetables and beef was full of fat. Real shame as we were excited about our food. The staff appeared not to be interested. We all left rather deflated to a lunch which cost £128 and very dissatisfied. Food at that price you need to up your game!!! Think carefully before going for a roast here.

Well gutted as I write this, not because we had some issues but because no one cared. We have been here a few times and, although an hours drive and a bit pricy, we have always enjoyed it. So today, a rather lacklustre welcome and gesture at a table. Fine, busy in garden. Waited nearly an hour for 2 roast dinners. Not a word from anyone. It wasn't till we checked we got our food. Large roast £22.95. One carrot, one piece of cauliflower, only extra from small was another piece of beef. I had an unidentified object in my dinner that could have been multiple pieces of garlic skin welded together but worst bit was when we went to pay and said maybe keep people informed of delivery progress and about item in my dinner they couldn't give a fig. Really? It's a treat to eat out and that reaction has really got to me. £52 for 1 large 1 small roast 1 glass wine and a coke. Shocking lack of service

Booked for Sunday lunch last weekend, the food and service was excellent, one comment though is that,s its got very expensive, we had nibbles Olives were over £8, bread with oil/balsamic was over £7, small roast £15.95 and large roast at £22.50, two deserts and two drinks total bill £79, that's fine dining prices for a pub meal, yes it was good but that's very pricey.

After reading the mixed reviews, I was apprehensive about booking The Peldon Rose for our annual Boxing Day family get together, but due to the ease of location for all, I went ahead. I shouldn’t have worried…the food and service were outstanding. We had pre booked our meals ahead of time which they had printed off so they knew what everyone was having. Every meal was absolutely delicious, the pies were the best we’d tasted and the small cod and chips were huge! The desserts were just as good. Everyone had empty plates. We have definitely found our venue for many Christmases to come! Thank you and a Happy New Year to you all!

This is the 4th visit over a short space of time we have eaten there, first three times were all good but today was not. Greeted by a lady who when asked if we could eat in the light restaurant / conservatory was told bluntly that there was enough light in the pub to eat,her manner was rude and an air of headmistress to her, have never encountered that service here before. The food we ate was tough meat which was odd as when we had been before it wasn't tough. All in all wont be back again after the experience and maybe the headmistress could be given a class in customer service.

Wonder staff can not fault the staff. The food however was disappointing very average Sunday lunches. Very fatty meat, Veg was okay, potatoes weren't fresh and gravy was very thin (possibly just cheap gravy granules) prices are ridiculous for what is served £22 for fatty beef! Poor pub grub, overpriced small portions.

Went to celebrate a birthday and have Sunday lunch. Venue is lovely and staff attentive. However, food was not that great. I had roast lamb, which was mainly fat and my sister had beef, which again had a lot if fat. Cabbage was under cooked and the potatoes were a variety of cooked properly, nearly cooked, and some that had either been reheated or left warming for a long time. We were disappointed as all other meals we have had there, have been lovely.

Food was really lovely and tasty with a good selection from children’s meals, pub grub and something a bit more fancy too, good portion sizes and at a good price. The staff were all attentive and friendly and very welcoming. The restaurant was a lovely setting, which is in addition to the traditional pub and the grounds outside gave a nice place to sit out and enjoy the evening sun, next to a cute pond. We would definitely recommend this place for anyone in the area and will most definitely be returning.

Chose a 10 oz sirloin steak medium rare. It was cooked medium rare accompanied by chunky chips which were ok,and a tomato and large mushroom. The steak was full of gristle and very straggly in appearance. The non gristle part of the steak about 50% was fine the rest inedible. I took it home for the dog he was delighted! However after a desert of ice cream of good quality I asked for a cup of espresso only to be told that the kitchen was closed. The time 9.17 pm. We paid the bill which even in these times was very expensive for the Quality of the meal. We paid the bill at 9.35 and left the staff were all waiting at the bar to go home. Lovely pub for an early evening drink but I would not eat here again

We were told there would be a 30 minute wait for our food which was about 45 minutes. A good desert choice and they were nice. Overall an acceptable meal but nothing to write home about.

Apart from some old couple constantly ignoring the COVID one-way system, this was a lovely pub, with lots of attentive staff. And the food is ok too. Lovely surroundings...albeit in the middle of two very busy roads...it seems to fight that fact somehow. / We were passing with our two sprogs on the way back to London after a mini break to the seaside. I had Chicken (and Halloumi) salad. As I was a bit fed up of chips with everything. (And when I looked at the kids menu it was chips with everything too. Apart from pasta, of course.) My missus saw a note saying 'ask about our vegan dishes'. She did...and if I remember rightly there weren't any of note. Even could she have the SeaBass but cooked with oil not butter? They said no, sorry. Dunno why. Can't even remember what she had. I don't know if she can to be honest. ;-) The kids meals were p[retty nice. Pasta was well...pasta and chicken nuggets (fried) and chipsm (fried) were what they were. Quite tasty and bad for you. Anyway all good if you want a 8/10 meal.

We ordered bread with vinegar and oil, french fries and olives. Each dish was around £4-£5. We would of liked a couple of sandwiches but the pub didn’t really offer much lunch time picky bits, so we opted for a couple of starters/sides. The olives were cheap from a jar, tiny little pot. Tasteless. The oil and vinegar was already mixed, it was 95% oil and that was tasteless and cheap, doubtful it was olive oil. The french fries came and were actually chips, but surprisingly tasty. I asked for bbq sauce and got some very watery brown mix that tasted nothing like bbq sauce. Other sauces were cheap bookers sachets. All in all very disappointing. Such a lovely pub and great location, both of us couldn’t believe how dreadful the food was. They are completely missing a trick here. It’s in desperate need of new menu and higher quality ingredients. Real shame

Before lockdown we ate quite frequently at The Peldon Rose, the roast was always lovely. Unfortunately today we had a very different experience. Everything was very bland and just disappointing. The mixed vegetables are just boiled together and had no seasoning or flavour. Not very imaginative. I think they may have put the prices up, which is understandable, but £18 for what we were served today is just far too much. I politely & quietly gave honest feedback to the manager who was very understanding and apologetic- she had a word with the landlady who didn’t offer any discount. I spoke to her after I had paid and she simply said there was salt and pepper on the table if the food was bland and not seasoned. Not acceptable at all! We won’t be back, which is a huge shame as it’s a lovely pub.

Four of us went on a Saturday night in December. The real fires burning helped give a cozy atmosphere. We have been a few times and it is currently being remodelled (the conservatory dining area is closed) but did not seem a big problem. We started with the Baked Camembert to share which was fantastic and quite filling. A good sharing plate. The beer battered cod was large and beautifully cooked (recommended) although the chips seemed warm as opposed to hot\ crispy. We also had Steal burger; mushroom and halloumi burger; and seafood linguine. Everyone enjoyed the food and nothing was left!We were too full for any deserts. Service was very efficient although I think if it was totally full then the strain may have been too much for the 3 or 4 people on. I have been using this establishment for 60 years and have seen it develop from an old Village Pub to a Gastro Pub.It is currently undergoing refurbishment to the Conservatory but this should not have dtracted from the quality of service.A party of 9 including two young children where people had travelled from Worcestershire, Brentwood and Colchester for our Annual get together. The food was of a reasonable standard but the service was very poor. To have to wait for 40 minutes for a Main Course because two diners ordered soup, which took 20 minutes to arrive did not help, and then to be served our Coffee before the Desserts arrived just added to the problem. Sorry but will not be returning next year.

My four friends and myself arrived at The Peldon Rose at 11am and had coffee. At 12.30 we went to our table for lunch. The staff were really lovely and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was really lovely and hot and very tasty. We all had dessert which was equally lovely. We will definitely go there again and will recommend it to family and friends.

My partner and I had lunch at the Peldon Rose today and had to wait over half an hour (we noted the time of ordering and arrival of the starter) for the soup which, when it arrived, was just about tepid. We ate it anyway but mentioned it to the waitress. Given that they were very clearly understaffed, it was clear that this had been waiting for a while to be brought to the table which would also explain the long wait. His main course was enjoyed by my partner but I found the ratatouille (sea bass) mushy and unpalatable.

Stopped by the Peldon Rose, appealed by the quaintness of the inn - its charm particularly (so not found in other converted “chain brand”pubs), plenty of parking. Although not busy at our time of visit, felt welcomed and comfortable in its surroundings. Very pleased with quality and quantity of food and found waitress service spot on (not busy to add but staff pleasant and happy to serve). A nice pub garden at the rear if only for a drink. Will definitely visit again. If nr Mersea Island or neighbouring area ...is worth a visit.

Have visited this pub many times in the past. Booked a table for nine people at lunch time.when we arrived no tables laid up, asked us to eat in pub instead of conservatory as not laid up. Why not.....waited nearly hour for fish and chips and scampi. Side salad consisted of lettuce only which I sent back and asked them to re do it. One poor waitress trying to do everything. Lovely girl. This restaurant has gone drastically down hill. It’s tatty and food wasnt all that. Surroundings scruffy and un cared for. Don’t bother with the Peldon rose unless it is completely revamped both bar and restaurant.

For my mums 90th birthday we decided to book the Peldon Rose for 13 family mumbers as she lives in West Mersea. It was an absolutely fabulous day. The food was wonderful, I really do not know how hard the chef must have worked to have all the meals ready at the same time. All the staff were brilliant. I must compliment the new owner for making this a great place to eat! Thank you for making my mothers special birthday so good.

We stopped here after a stay in East Mersea, carpark was very spacious and we could easily pull in and park our car and trailer. The burgers were delicious! We sat in the sunny outdoor garden and the kids explored the garden. I highly recommend a meal here :-)

Last Thursday we arrived at 12.10pm and sat in the conservatory, we were the only ones at the time of ordering our meal. Bearing in mind we have eaten here quite often, always with good service. The restaurant started to fill up, with orders being taken, people were being served with their meals before us, when I questioned this was told that our meal would take a little longer as we had ordered a burger! I noticed that a customer who came in after us had been served with a burger... we were finally served with four food at 1.35pm, the burger was not that special! Were offered another drink or dessert on the house but declined. As far as I am concerned our order had been forgotten, but obviously the waitress would not admit this. Will NOT visit again.

It had been a while since visiting this wonderful 15th century inn. So on passing, on our way back from West Mersea, we decided to pop in for a pint.

I've deleted my previous scathing review of this pub, as a visit today (18 months on) showed us things have really improved. The staff are clearly on the ball again, the beer was excellent and the entire pub was very clean (even after a busy lunchtime). We'll definitely be going back. Glad to see an old favourite is back in it's prime.

We visited The Peldon Rose yesterday - three adults and one three-year-old and had a really good meal. We had to wait a while but we were told this as we ordered our drinks. The fish was beautifully cooked and my son had the spare ribs which he said was the best he’d ever tasted. So much so he complimented the chef and was given some barbecue sauce to take home. The apple strudel was also excellent and it was nice to see the restaurant is busy.

We had a day trip to Mersey Island as it was a nice day. The pub we had intended to go in was too busy so we decided to drive home and see if we found anything on the way. Just after the bridge we spotted the Peldon Rose and called in for lunch. We were seated quickly and husband ordered a beer. I asked for a wine list. The wine list appeared but no beer. I then ordered a glass of wine, which appeared but stil no beer. After chasing the beer up with another waitress it finally arrived. Not exactly slick service but we let it go. We both ordered the steak burger. It looked great on arrival and to be fair the chips and coleslaw it came with were nice. But the burger just tasted odd. Almost sweet. I think it was a mix of meats but I couldn't put my finger on it - I just knew I couldn't eat it. I didn;t eat mine, and husband gave up after about half was eaten. When the young waitress collected the plates she could see clearly that we had left much of the meal but wasn't going to mention it. So I said the burgers weren't great, so she said she'd tell the chef. She came back and said she'd told the chef and he'd asked if it was because they were chargrilled. We said no, they just tasted odd. She came back again and said they were made fresh this morning. We said ok, but they still tasted weird. She came back again and said chef had offered us a free dessert. We declined and said if possible could they remove the burgers from the bill. She came back and said she'd now spoken to her manager, and they could take one off the bill, but not my husbands as he'd eaten more. He said he wasn't prepared to pay - he was happy to pay for the chips and the drinks but not the burger. She came back again and said she'd now spoken to the owner and she said we could pay a small amount for his burger. The actual price equated to roughly what the drinks would be so we said yes we'll pay. I felt sorry for the young waitress as she was doing her best but the manager or the owner should have come over and dealt with the situation. It made me feel as though I was making a habit of going to various pubs and not paying, which is far from the case. We often take a day trip out for a walk with the dog and have had more pub lunches of burger and chips than I care to mention. Such a shame as the pub looks nice from the outside but the service and food were very poor

Went here for a family birthday meal. It was nice and cosy, with a working log burner. The food was really good, and the staff attentive and helpful. Would definitely recommend for lovely pub food.

Visited here many times and always exceptional service and great food. Decided this time to take my newborn and best friend from London to present one of the best building in Colchester in the country. What happened was we were turned away as i have a baby and asked to sit in a conservatory, not the 500 year old pub we came to see. My question to the owner is, what rules allows for people to bring their dogs but not children?

Spa day for Mothers' day. Lucky that the beauty therapists were so good because it saved the day. Pool area looked very good but the aromatherapy room had nothing of aromatherapy about it and the pool itself was icy. The relazing pool was also too cold to sit in but the jacuzzi was warm: unfortunately the bubbles were absolutely violent and because so much chlorine had been used in the water, it was spat in your eyes and we had to get out, eyes streaming. So we went to get our afternoon tea: what a disappointment! When we got to the café area we were left waiting for quite some time with no one to seat us. The room was in a mess: tables covered with detritus. They only managed to clear up by getting a beauty therapist to come and clear the tables! We settled in for tea.5 minutes later we had eaten it! We each had the equivalent of 2 slices of bread cut into 4 little sandwiches. Only 2 fillings: cheese and tomato and egg mayonnaise. Usually if you go out for afternoon tea you have double this amount and are then offered more. At Ballentynes you had a couple of mouthfuls and when we asked for more were told we would have to pay for them! The one scone each was actually very nice but the cake selection was dismal, with a small piece of chocolate cake that we had to cut to share ourselves and another that looked so amateurish that neither of us wished to sample it. Absolutely nothing special about this "special Mothers' Day" event. As is often the case in hospitality the management is trying to increase the profit margin by cutting back on the quality of the offer once payment has been taken and cutting back on staff so that staff, who were, I should add, all very pleasant, are rushing around and unable to provide the expected level of service. The place is definitely not meeting it's potential. We will not be visiting again.

Excellent pub with fine selection of real ale. We received a warm welcome and were served quickly and professionally with our drinks. On a whim we decided to have lunch which was superb: I enjoyed the home made mince and onion pie in suet pastry with beautifully cooked vegetables, and my husband enjoyed the Vegetable and Quorn curry. The pub had a good crowd of regulars which made for a happy and community atmosphere. The pub is old style- just as we like it; spotlessly clean and traditional in all regards. Highly recommend this pub and look forward to visiting again when next in Bures.

***** NO WONDER THIS PLACE IS CLOSING DOWN ***** Paid for a taxi to have breakfast only to find they have no chef and no staff and greeted by an unapologetic receptionist. Can’t find this anywhere on their website, met another gentleman standing in the Carpark after also booking a taxi for breakfast. DO NOT BOTHER WITH BEEFEATER AS A WHOLE COMPANY IF THEY HAVE SUCH LITTLE REGARD FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS.
