If you are an Aunt Bessie fan, then this is spot on! The food was edible but I am certain that everything came straight from the freezer and none (or very little) was home made/cooked.

What a lovely small traditional old pub. (Which sadly are getting fewer and fewer in UK). Four of us met for lunch on a Wednesday and were greeted by a very friendly lady who was attentive to us throughout. We ate ham, egg and chips, tagliatelle, scampi and chips and we all enjoyed our meals - plentiful and tasty. The homemade Bakewell tart and brownies were worth the calories! So tasty. Can definitely recommend and will return next time we are in the area. Thank you!

My husband had chilli beef and salad. He loved the salad which was very tasty and fresh. I had the scampi and it wasn't the usual greasy offering but very good indeed. Sadly we live quite a long way from the Plough but will definitely go back if we are in the area

Turned up for lunch at around 1pm. Not at all busy - just one couple finishing off lunch and a family in the corner. Ordered Thai chicken burger, as they had run out of roast. Took well over an hour to arrive. A large group who arrived after we order got their food and nearly finished before we got ours. The Thai chicken burger was a good size piece of chicken. But served with rosemary chips, which didn’t go. It was just a chicken piece with a splodge of hoisin sauce, red cabbage coleslaw in a bun, with rosemary chips. The coleslaw served on the side was also the same as in the burger, and so wet that it turned the bun to mush and stuck to the plate in a sloppy mat. Had to ask for a napkin as only given 3 for 4 people. Overall, not impressed.

We were travelling to Mersea Island with our pooch in the car and thought we would stop off for a drink and some lunch. We arrived about 15 minutes before the pub opened, but the chef came out and asked if we were going into the pub, which we confirmed we were. He did apologise and say that the bar staff was stuck in traffic but would be here in about 5 minutes. That was fine as it was a nice day. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we ordered our food, which was excellent. My husband had fish and chips and the fish was very white and flaky, so it is fresh fish they serve and not frozen. Brilliant. I have moinks, never had these before but they again, were very tasty meatbealls wrapped in bacon. The bar staff provided drink for our pooch and helped us to look at the Strood Cam to see that we could pass safely. We then sat in the rear garden again a very nice surrounding and spoke with the owner, who didn't try and rush off, even though he was busy. Would totally recommend this pub for anybody who is travelling to Mersea Island or even if just passing - Pop in this is an old welcoming pub. Makes a change these days. Thank you to all.

I wouldn't normally review places but felt like i should on this occasion. We visited early on Saturday afternoon with a couple of friends and sat in the garden with our baby and the 3 dogs. We settled on a table in the corner of the garden which was covered by a gazebo which helped to keep everybody nice and cool. The lady behind the bar was very welcoming and friendly as soon as we arrived and all the time we were there. The food was absolutely delicious. I would go back just for the fries alone. My wife said the chicken burger she had was the best she had ever had. Our friends were also impressed. One of them is Vegan and often struggles to find something she would eat on a menu. Here she was spoilt for choice, and went for the Jack Fruit. She was suitably impressed. We would have loved to have stayed longer, unfortunately our friend was struggling really badly with hayfever so had to get home. Thanks very much for a really nice visit. We will definitely be back to explore the other delicious things on the menu.

Having been one of our all time favourite pubs for both atmosphere and food, we have been sadly disappointed by our latest and possibly our last visit. The menus have been fabulous, often with changes dependant on seasonal produce and one of our favourite features were the incredible sauces or ‘jus’ on several of the dishes. We visited midweek and the pork belly with red cabbage was served with a sauce which can only be described as ‘acidic’ and watery, far different from food which we become accustomed to here, also the side order of mixed vegetables which we were told would comprise of broccoli, carrots & peas arrived mainly consisting of overcooked potatoes and mushy broccoli. Its such a shame when there are staff changes which dramatically affect the standards of food and also atmosphere.

A large table of us booked lunch for Sunday roast. We found this little pub/restaurant wonderful, cute style, very lovely staff, great menu and lovely outside area. We sat inside and was served quickly considering we were a large table and the resturant was quite busy! I ordered the pork belly roast and my partner the sirloin of beef roast. Wow it was absolutely delicious, it came with this devine red cabbage and the pork belly itself was so soft and juicy but with a wonderful crispy crackling on top! Superb! We shared chocolate brownie for desert which was served warm with vanilla ice cream and again this was really really good. I think the food is fairly priced and is pretty delicious. I cannot really fault this resturant, we had a very good experience. This resturant is children friendly and did provide a highchair, children's menus and extra plates to share food.

The fish is in a gluten free batter for all to enjoy and the scotch eggs are divine-again gluten free. Both dishes i've never had in a restaurant or pub before- usually only eaten if I make them myself. Besides the fact they're gluten free they are absolutely delicious and so reasonably priced. I really honestly do not understand how anyone could complain about the food or the service. Well done Jack and Josie.

My parents had talked for weeks about going to the Plough for Sunday lunch, they've tried to book a few times with no luck so we're really looking forward to finally getting a booking at a time that suited all the family getting together. I travelled over 35 miles to join them, only to arrive at the time of our booking to be sat at the smallest table for 4 I've ever seen (the chairs wouldn't even fit under the table, nevermind trying to get near it when you were sat down!), and to then be told there are no Sunday roasts left! At 1.30?? So you advertise Sunday lunch, take bookings so you know how how many covers you're expecting, and then you run out of roast dinner?! Its so rare we ever all get to go out together for dinner, gutted is an understatement. So, so disappointed.

Been meaning to visit for a while and finally dropped in on the way home on a Saturday evening. The bar was small and full of local people but we got a friendly welcome as soon as we walked in. Bit disturbed by the mottled brown dog blending so well into the floor boards! He was very friendly though. We had a drink in the bar and asked for the restaurant menu. The bar menu looked good, lots of the usual offerings which was nice to see. The restaurant menu was interesting so we managed to get the last table in the restaurant that night. We went through to the restaurant area which was well laid out and had slightly raised area with book effect wallpaper. The toilets were accessed via a short corridor, complete with wine box wallpaper, and although not the most modern facilities, they were clean and had lots of nice little touches.Back to the food. We ordered tagliatelle carbonara and pate as starters followed by duck and pork stroganoff.Tagliatelle was delicious and large enough to enjoy but not big enough to spoil your appetite. Pate was homemade and served with a stack of toast fingers. Both were delicious. The duck was cooked in a blackberry sauce and served on a bed of sauté potatoes topped with parsnip crisps, a separate pot of mixed veg was a decent size. Duck was lovely, and at £15.95 it was extremely good value. The pork stroganoff was beautifully cooked and the pork was soft and flavoursome. We weren't going to have dessert as we were quite full! We opted for kiwi pavlova and raspberry creme brûlée. Bit of a let down to be honest, meringue was dry and powdery, I suspect from a packet, not much fruit but the vanilla pod ice cream was nice. The raspberry creme brûlée was not set and a bit runny, having said that it was very tasty.Service was friendly, quick and attentive without being pushy. Overall it was a lovely meal, just under £60 including drinks. We would definitely go back. Had the pavlova lived up to the rest of the meal it would have been a 5 star review.

Four of us walked into an empty but small, cosy restaurant and were met by a friendly member of staff and let us choose our table. Lovely pint of DOOMBAR beer and I ordered fish and chips, absolutely superb as were all our meals. Will certainly return when we are next in the area. Thanks to the two ladies that served us.

Stopped here for a light lunch, friendly staff, average food though,I think its forte is local ale. The only really down side was the trafgic outside, made leaving the car park difficult, perhaps we just chose the wronv time of day

Went here on our way to our holiday. Charlie, the busy waitress and bar person was very attentive and excellent at her jobs. We went for the Pork fillet Stroganoff and the Plaice with caper butter, both were really good, followed by 2 truly delicious deserts.Thank you to all concerned, I am very fussy and must say this was up to my standard. Will definately return.

Good welcome. Since we last visited the bar and restaurant have changed places. There is a small dining area, separate from the bar although there appeared to be some people eating in the bar.The menu was good. My starter of deconstructed prawn cocktail was delicious. The soup was well received too. My steak was slightly over cooked, might have been kept on very hot plate a bit too long. It would have been nice to have had a veg, rather than the usual peas. The vegetarian option of mushroom stroganoff and rice was apparently tasty, but as is often the case with this option the portion was small. My son ate my chips. The pudding menu was good. I was a bit disappointed with my meringue dish as had expected a slice from a large pavlova, not an individual nest.

Just fancying a late pub lunch we popped in again, having had dinner a few months ago.Two menus were on offer and possibly a little too much choice. We mixed and matched without any issues and had a lovely meal.Good range of drinks available including a few niche drinks and only let down by a slightly bored or disinterested bar person.Reasonable value but just remember the mushy peas aren't home made!?

Visited this week and can only say the food was excellent, the lamb was exceptional. Took sometime to serve, over 30 minutes, but well worth the wait. Also homemade cheesecake one of the best I have tasted. Good atmosphere and very pleasant staff.Well worth a second visit.

We popped in the plough for a quick drink and a snack during a bike ride. Lovely back garden very spacious so we plonked ourselves out there in the sun. We ordered a couple of beers of which they have a good selection on draught and in bottles too. We just wanted a snack to keep us going so we ordered a bucket of chips. Unfortunately for us they had been so busy the kitchen had closed but the landlady felt so bad that she asked the kitchen staff kindly if they would mind and they obliged. Excellent service considering they had already closed the kitchen. The venue itself is lovely set in a lovely village. We will certainly be back to sample your main menu next time.

Visited this pub on our holiday. Table of 8 (2 families) The food was great (better menu than your usual pub grub) the service was very attentive and made us feel very welcome. There are not many covers so be sure to book or be disappointed.

Great pub for the locals and a fine restaurant for those of us visiting. Excellent gin and tonic and several first rate ales on tap. Varied menu with wonderful starters and soup, The service was prompt and attentive without being intrusive. Haddock was particularly lovely. Reservations are a good idea, particularly in peak season. Ample off street parking. Makes a nice pairing with "the one down the road".

Managed to snag an outside table with a view of the castle. The chai latte had real depth of flavour and the cappuccino was good. My felafel salad was very good and the felafel were moist instead of dry like in most places. My partners chicken and bacon sandwich was generously filled and all at a very reasonable price. We’d deff go back here when next in Colchester.

Popped in after a visit to the dentists, hoping to grab some breakfast, but I was too late as it was 12pm. However, the lovely staff member did me a strong black coffee (very tasty, strong without being too bitter), offered me some toast and tried to cater to my gluten free diet, and later on returned with a packet of GF crisps as they had finished breakfast time. Very thoughtful service, and the sofas at the front of the shop are extremely comfortable, I did not want to leave.
