A proper country public house. Dog friendly, good beer selection. We had the Sunday Roast and beef burger, I have included the menu for good measure. Service was quick and efficient with friendly professional staff. The beef could have been a bit warmer but generally no complaints. Good parking facilities. Good size garden with seating area. Nice to see the Landlord and team doing well in these hard times.

Went for Sunday lunch, what a mistake. Roast potatoes had been sitting around for how knows long; cold, hard on outside, empty in the middle practically unedible; parsnips rock hard under cooked; some other over cooked vegetables, and roast beef that needed a steak knife and a good chew. Definitely wont be going again.

We went to the Alma for a beer and not to eat although the Sunday roast looked very good. We sat outside as quite mild and they had infrared heaters. The beer, IPA, was very good. It was busy but plenty of staff to serve at the bar. Lots of outside space, tables and chairs. Another visit to eat this time, the food was excellent and the service very good. This time I had and enjoyed the Speckled Hen beer on tap.

We have been here over the years and always had a lovely Sunday lunch. Unfortunately, today, we had a very disapointing experience. Flaccid, anaemic, chewy beef with lots of gristle and barely cooked roast potatoes. My husband had a roast chicken dinner, a scrawny chicken quarter which again had flaccid, pale skin. I did ask if the chef had changed recently and was told that there had been a change. Such a shame as we really liked going to the Alma for a treat. The waiting service was very good though.

I have been to this pub several times this summer and every time the food was delicious. However they have now changed the menu and the chef. The new menu is awful; there was nothing on it that sounded remotely tempting. Their old menu had lots of lovely dishes to choose from, you really were spoilt for choice. I ended up going for the smoked chicken Caesars salad. The chicken was not smoked and it looked like it came out of a packet. There was also not that much of it. Caesars salad does not have tomatoes and cucumber in, but this one did. It does however usually have croutons which this didn’t. It also had a very small amount of dressing. I had to put mayonnaise and salt on it to make it edible as it was so bland. It was overpriced for what was essentially a salad that looked like it belonged in the 70’s and chicken from a packet. I will not be going back.

However we returned at the weekend and I was very disappointed to find that the roast dinner was lacking in all area’s i.e taste, presentation and effort. The waitress said no, she would take the order. She seated us then gave us a menu. Turned started wiping down the table even though we were ready to order drinks. When she came back she took our food and drinks order. When our food arrived we were asked if we wanted any sauces, to which we replied ketchup and mayo, we also asked for some more drinks. The sauces never arrived. As we had finished eating I stood up to pay just as the other waitress brought our drinks over which we said we no longer needed as we had finished. Four of us visited for lunch. Good Covid measures in place. We ordered our drinks and food, drinks arrived promptly and then a 45 minute wait for our food followed. 2 had the burger, 1 had the veg curry all of which were good. Unfortunately one was served the chicken which was pink and bloody in the middle. The homemade coleslaw served with the burgers was grey in colour and tasted off. At the end of the meal we mentioned these issues to the waitress, we were fobbed off with being told the chef would just say it is the dark meat in the chicken (when clearly not cooked properly). Regarding the coleslaw we were informed that other people had complained about it, but it wasn't off chef just puts something 'funny' in it!! Certainly won't be back any time soon.

Lived in the area for 25 years and visited the Alma after 5 years recently. Will not be going back!!Be very careful of the bottled beer prices, as no size is printed on the drinks menu and they are 100% more expensive than the supermarket. Perhaps that’s the reason why size not shown. That’s some profit margin!!I asked what size of bottle of Punk IPA I would receive for £3.60.Despite assurances to the contrary that it would be a big bottle, I was served with the 330ml size.So that’s £7.20 for a pint whereas it’s £5 (on tap) at The Cricketers in Eight Ash Green. So that’s where I will be going.

No complaints about the food or choice of ales. In fact the food was of a very high standard for a pub (we had the smoked haddock pie and the burger). Despite this we did not enjoy our experience. This seems to be very much a pub for the locals and if you're not a local, everyone seems to look at you as if you shouldn't be there. We felt decidedly unwelcome, ate our meal quickly and left. Went for lunch and had a roast. The food was nice. The service is good and friendly. The pub has had a refurb and looks much better.

Quaint barren pub with no atmosphere - party of 6 of us chose to eat outside as when eaten inside previously the smell of the toilets was very strong. Bar staff (all of one) was lovely she could’ve done with some help as serving bar and waiting on tables meant slow service. Being a vegetarian the choice was very very limited I can go anywhere and eat fish n chips or a curry. Fish wasn’t all that , batter rather doughy but not greasy. Gammon was very tough.

Enjoyed my time in this traditional neighbourhood pub. The ambiance and the friendliness of the staff were all wonderful. I’m glad I was there!

We’ve been coming to the Alma for quite a while and today I’ve tried their burger. Well... I had to see their chef and shake his hand! It was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. If you’re serious about burgers, it’s a must !!

Managed to snag an outside table with a view of the castle. The chai latte had real depth of flavour and the cappuccino was good. My felafel salad was very good and the felafel were moist instead of dry like in most places. My partners chicken and bacon sandwich was generously filled and all at a very reasonable price. We’d deff go back here when next in Colchester.

Had lunch here and then came back for the evening BBQ summer event. The lunch and BBQ were very well done. The service at both were good. Having lunch by the river was nice.
